Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty WAGONER COUNTY 9 | FEBRUARY 2018
It doesn’t give you wings after all!
Wagoner man Kevin Todd McCormick Jr.,
24, was arrested after he allegedly attempted
to rob a convenience store with a knife on
January 26. He didn’t get any money from
the register, but he did get away from the
scene with a stolen Red Bull.
According to the affidavit, Wagoner officers
were dispatched to the store in the 400 block
of W. Cherokee. On the way to the scene,
they were advised that the suspect was
headed eastbound on Cherokee Street. He
was armed with a knife and carrying a Red
Bull.
Officers located the suspect, later identified
as McCormick, walking near the intersection of Railroad Boulevard and Cherokee Street. They approached him and
ordered him to get on the ground. After placing him in handcuffs, officers
searched him and found a knife in his back right pocket.
A store employee said McCormick entered the store at approximately 2:40
p.m. and grabbed a Red Bull. He then walked to the front counter and pulled
a knife from his pocket. The employee said McCormick tried to rob the store,
but the employee refused to give him any money. When he realized that he
wasn’t getting his hands on store cash, McCormick left the store with the
energy drink in his hand.
A witness who was in the store at the time of the incident told police the
same account of events.
McCormick is being charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous
weapon. His bond was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in
court on February 8, 2018.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

FEBRUARY IS Teen Dati ng Violence
Awareness Month
Learn About Teen Dating Violence
Every year, approximately 1.5 million high
school students nationwide experience physical
abuse from a dating partner. It is also known that
3 in 4 parents have never talked to their children
about domestic violence. In light of these alarming facts, every year during the month of February advocates join efforts to
raise awareness about dating violence, highlight promising practices, and encourage communities to get involved.
There are many resources available to provide information and support to
victims and assist service providers and communities to decrease the prevalence of dating violence among young people. Anyone can make this happen
by raising awareness about the issue, saying something about abuse when
you see it and organizing your community to make a difference. Take Action!
Teen dating violence (TDV) is defined as a pattern of abuse or threat of
abuse against teenaged dating partners, occuring in different forms, including verbal, emotional, physical, sexual and digital. TDV occurs across diverse
groups and cultures.
Although the dynamics of TDV are similar to adult domestic violence, the
forms and experience of TDV, as well as the challenges in seeking and providing services, make the problem of TDV unique.
The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence and VAWnet have
developed an Online Special Collection: Preventing and Responding to Teen
Dating Violence. Recently updated, this Special Collection emphasizes collaborative and multilevel approaches to the prevention of and response to teen
dating violence. This year’s updates include additional resources for teachers
and school-based professionals and a new section to support the efforts of
pregnancy prevention advocates and adolescent sexual health practitioners
in addressing adolescent relationship abuse.

not good behavior
Spiro woman Julie Michelle Goodwin, 46,
was already locked up in jail, but she’s now
in even more trouble after she allegedly assaulted an officer on January 12.
According to the police report, a nurse was
administering medication to female inmates
at the Sequoyah County Jail under the observation of a detention officer. The nurse was
making her rounds, when she suddenly yelled
to the officer for assistance. She saw an inmate, identified as Goodwin, trying to jump
from the top tier of the cell block.
The detention officer ran to the nurse’s aid
and saw Goodwin, standing on the top tier.
Goodwin told the officer she was going to
jump. The officer ran up the stairs toward the woman, and the nurse attempted to stop Goodwin by jumping over the rail. The officer reached for
the inmate and tried to grab her shoulder, but he instead grabbed a handful
of her hair.
Goodwin punched the officer on his left cheek with her right fist. The officer
attempted to restrain the woman, but Goodwin resisted and fought back. She
scratched the top of the officer’s right hand, causing him to bleed.
Another officer arrived at the location to assist, and they were eventually
able to put the woman in handcuffs. They then placed her in an isolation cell
until she could calm down.
Goodwin is being charged with battery/assault and battery on police officer. Her bond was set at $8,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on
February 28, 2018.

Hammertime!
A woman in Arkansas was taken into custody
after police say she attacked a man with a hammer.
Little Rock television station KATV reports that
55-year-old Rebecca Ann Larch was being held at
the Pulaski County Jail Sunday (Dec. 17) on accusations of aggravated assault and second-degree
domestic battery. Jail records do not indicate if
she is represented by an attorney.
Police say Larch was arrested Friday (Dec. 15)
afternoon after she allegedly chased a man outside her residence and struck him twice with a hammer. Investigators say
the circumstances of the attack remain unclear, but Larch was reportedly
intoxicated when she was arrested.
Larch has a listed address in Mabelvale but police say she and the man
she attacked were roommates. The man’s name and the extent of his injuries were not immediately available.

How can people find a treatment
center they can afford?
If they have health insurance, it may
cover substance abuse treatment services. Many insurance plans cover inpatient
stays. When setting up appointments
with treatment centers, you can ask about
payment options and what insurance
plans they take. They can also advise you
on potential low-cost options.
To find treatment—and to learn about payment options—try the Behavioral
Health Treatment Services Locator provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration. This free tool offers payment information for each
of the treatment services listed, including information on sliding fee scales and
payment assistance. Its “Frequently Asked Questions” section addresses cost of
treatment.
You can also call the treatment helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (1-800-662-4357)
or 1-800-487-4889 (TTY) to ask about treatment centers that offer low- or nocost treatment. You can also contact your state substance abuse agency—many
states will help pay for substance abuse treatment.
Note that the new Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act ensures that
co-pays, deductibles, and visit limits are generally not more restrictive for mental
health and substance abuse disorder benefits than they are for medical and surgical benefits. The Affordable Care Act builds on this law and requires coverage
of mental health and substance use disorder services as one of ten essential
health benefits categories. Under the essential health benefits rule, individual and
small group health plans are required to comply with these parity regulations. For
more information on the Affordable Care Act you can call 1-800-318-2596 or go
to https://www.healthcare.gov/ .
When you research payment options, be sure you are speaking to people familiar with the new rules (old websites and pamphlets will not necessarily be accurate).
A note on health insurance for veterans: If the person needing treatment is a
veteran or is covered by health benefits for veterans, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) can help you find VA services near you. Visit the VA Substance
Use Disorder Program Locator to do your search.

Live life with passion
By Christian Ryan
Life is a never-ending battle. We win
some – we lose some. What defines
“winning”, or as we call it, “success”,
may change from person to person.
I define success by living with passion. In my life, passion has helped me
drive past conflicted times that should
have held me back and hindered my
success. Coming from a broken home
with no father and eventually no mother
(for a period of time), I could have fallen
to drugs or crime, but I had a burning
passion to make something positive of
my life.
My first actions towards my passion started with fitness. I started
lifting weights the summer before going into the 7th grade. Then,
Coach [Jay] Moore convinced me to give football a chance. That
was the start of my career as an athlete.
Since then I’ve been successful in football and powerlifting. I ran
track but more for team support. It’s not exactly one of my strongest
talents.
In powerlifting I achieved junior state placer and state champion
for 8th and 9th grade. Now, I’m a varsity state placer and state
champion. I’m going into the second semester of my senior year
and I’m planning to become two-time state champion, if it’s in
God’s plan for me.
I live my life passionately. I choose not to be normal. It is a choice
that requires strong self-discipline. I want to change the world for
the better. I don’t want just breathe, work, and die. I want to see the
world and change people’s lives.
This keeps me motivated to get through the hard times because
I know that seasons change and there is a light at the end of every
tunnel. I believe passion is essential for a happy human life.
Without God I would be nothing. Ever since I gave my life to Him
and surrendered, He has used my passion for His will. I want to start
a youth ministry and help teens that are in my shoes - going through
High School confused and afraid and show them there is so much
more to life than what appears to be in front of them.
Passion can be positive or negative. Without the right direction
passion can take you down the wrong path. Healthy passion is
something that helps us grow and can help shape us into great
leaders. Hitler was a passionate man, but he was passionate for the
wrong reasons and murdered almost the entire Jewish population.
Obviously, this is an example of misdirected passion.
Be careful that your passions are productive and positive. As you
pursue your dreams make sure what you are doing will change others lives and maybe even the world for the better.
About the author:
Christian Ryan is a senior at Cushing High School. He moved to Cushing from North Carolina when he was seven years old. Shortly thereafter,
his mother was diagnosed with cancer and became involved in drugs and
later spent time in jail. He then went to live with relatives. To escape his
problems, Christian threw himself into weight-lifting and other sports, but
lifting was his passion. He contributes his success to Coach Jay Moore
and several family members and friends. Christian placed third in the state
power-lifting competition when he was in 8th grade. In 9th grade, he won
junior state champion. In 10th grade varsity, he placed third in the state;
the first and second place winners were seniors. In 2016, his junior year,
he won the state power-lifting championship. During that time, he dabbled
in drugs to drown out his problems, but quickly realized that was not the
way he wanted to live his life. In 2017, he turned his life over to God after
contemplating suicide. From that moment on, he wanted to make a difference. After high school, Christian plans to possibly attend ORU in the fall
semester. He wants to become a youth pastor to help kids like himself that
have gone through troubled times.

ag hunter comments on judge balkman’s
trial schedule for state opiod lawsuit
Oklahoma is first state in
nation to have a trial scheduled in opioid litigation
Attorney General Mike Hunter
today commended Cleveland
County District Judge Thad
Balkman for granting the state’s
requested May 2019 trial date for
its lawsuit against opioid manufacturers for their role in creating
the opioid epidemic.
Oklahoma is the first state in the nation to have a trial date set
among the multitude of states across the country suing drug manufacturers.
Attorney General Hunter said the 2019 trial date will allow the
state sufficient time to gather evidence and prove its case.
“We appreciate the urgency Judge Balkman saw in getting the
case to trial,” Attorney General Hunter said. “Rather than dragging
it out longer, which is what the companies had requested, Oklahomans who have suffered immeasurably from the years of fraudulent
marketing campaigns will see this case resolved sooner rather than
later.
“The state’s case is solid and our team is prepared to hold these
companies accountable for their role in the deadliest drug epidemic
the state and nation have ever seen.”
Attorney General Hunter filed the lawsuit against the nation’s leading opioid manufacturers in June 2017, claiming the effects of deceptive marketing campaigns over the last decade have fueled the
state’s opioid epidemic.
Manufacturers responded to the lawsuit with motions to dismiss,
which Judge Balkman ruled against last December, allowing discovery in the case to begin.
In the last three years, nearly 3,000 Oklahomans have died from
overdose deaths and more than 1,300 newborns have tested positive for substance exposure. In 2016 Oklahoma ranked first in the
number of milligrams of opioids distributed per adult, and in the 14
counties surrounding Tulsa, there were enough opioids for every
man, woman and child to have 90 pills.

GOING FOR A RIDE
Three Park Hill men were jailed after they allegedly conspired together to rob a Muskogee
man on the morning of January 15.
According to the police report, the men, identified as Chauncy Joe Rotenberry, 36, Christopher Wayne Rotenberry, 34, and 23-year-old
Hannibal Hayes Rotenberry, agreed to give a
man a ride in exchange for gas money. They
picked the man up from the Arrowhead Mall in
the 500 block of North Main in Muskogee at
approximately 11:45 a.m. The men were supposed to give the victim a ride to Tahlequah if
he gave them money for gas. That didn’t happen - the troublesome trio and their victim never made the roughly 30-minute drive to Tahlequah. They instead just stayed in Muskogee.
Reports state that the men drove the victim
to the 4300 block of Chandler Road, where
they assaulted him and stole his cash. They
allegedly held the victim down and took $630
from him.
The victim said the men then told him to get
out of the vehicle before they sped off and left
the scene.
Warrants were issued for the men’s arrest
on January 19, and they were arrested for the
crime on January 26.
All three Rotenberry men are being charged
with felony counts of conjoint robbery. They are
all being held in the Muskogee County Detention Facility on $100,000 bonds.
