from the sheriff
Dear Friends, Supporters and Citizens of
Garvin County,
As you may know, I am retiring from the
Office of Sheriff effective July 14, 2019. This
decision is not an easy one and comes earlier than I planned. An opportunity presents
itself that will not be available at the end of
this term.
Since 2010, I have appreciated your friendship and support. I sincerely appreciate your
confidence in me. There are too many people
to thank who have worked so hard to elect
me as sheriff. You know who you are. Not
always have I been able to meet everyone’s
wants and wishes, but with fairness and justice in mind, I have done what I thought was
right for everyone’s safety. An elected sheriff
has the ability to help more people than any other law enforcement official. I
hope I have helped at least a few.
I humbly apologize to those who may feel I have let them down by my retirement. That is not my intent. I am doing what is best for my family and me.
I have had such a strong and supportive family over my career serving the
public, it is important now that I put my family first with this decision.
Sadly, I knew this day would come. Serving as Garvin County Sheriff is the
highest honor and privilege I have had in my 31 years in law enforcement. The
role of sheriff comes with many responsibilities and challenges. If done correctly and ethically, it is the most difficult job in law enforcement.
Thank you to employees of the Garvin County Sheriff’s Office. The office
is blessed to have employees who serve with dedication around the clock.
Because of their hard work, the office has transformed to a highly professional
full-service sheriff’s office serving all in Garvin County.
Sincerely
Larry Rhodes, Sheriff

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty GARVIN COUNTY 5 | JULY 2019
A South Carolina man was caught rubbing buttered toast all over his neighbor’s SUV
window. Seems like a foolproof plan, how did he get caught? According to MSN, He
just dropped the toast a few feet away from the car and made his departure, causing
a nearby woman to notice and call the police. The police charged the now hungry man
with “malicious damage to property” and estimated the cost of damage to be about $1.
What’s the hottest you’ve ever been? Temperature-wise of course, because if it was
in physical terms, we all know we were the hottest at our 5th grade, bowl-cut, chubs
stage. But really, to what extent would you go to cool off?
Hopefully not so far you’d get arrested, but this is exactly what a group of four young
men in Germany did. On a hot day, they decided to make their own pool in a car.
In a BMW no less. A policeman noticed a very strange convertible driving down the
road. Upon closer viewing, it appeared that the bathing-suit clad men were splashing
around in the water-filled car, clearly intoxicated. Though there was no law against driving around with a pool in someone’s car, they were probably charged for driving without
a permit. Talk about hot water.
What do you guys think about sausage? I suppose it’s better than a hot dog, which
in turn is better than bologna (which is basically giant hot dog slices?). And no matter
what, it has to be better than Lunchables *shudder*.
No matter your opinion, sausage was a huge disappointment for this Phoenix man.
He attempted to rob two large businesses, first an Ace Hardware and then a Safeway.
He put his hand under his shirt to look like a gun, but the cashier was not fooled and
calmly said “no” to his request for money. Equally unsuccessful was his attempt to rob
a Safeway, which resulted in him being escorted out of the building. He waited a few
minutes before returning into the store to snag a small breakfast sausage and was
therefore charged with shoplifting. I guess all that failing worked up an appetite.
Sometimes people don’t want their babies. Throughout history, these people have
found convenient ways to get rid of them. In the middle ages, a popular solution was
to leave a swaddled infant on the doorstep of a misfortunate new parent. Worse for the
child, another option was an orphanage. In later times, parents could even put their kid
in the circus for life. The last one, I’m actually jealous of.
It might not have been this Florida woman’s goal to give away her child, but that’s
sure what it looked like. She had gone shopping at Dillard’s, and tried to shoplift $260
worth of clothing using her baby stroller. When a police officer followed her out to her
car, she flipped out and eventually threw her baby in its little carseat at him. The baby
was not injured. The shoplifter received three charges, including “resisting a police officer without violence”. Um. What would be violent, throwing her entire family?

Man allegedly hiding drugs in butt accidentally shoots himself in testicles
A bungling felon from Washington state
made a series of blunders when he shot
himself in the testicles and tried to hide the
weapon — all while storing drugs in his anus,
according to a report.
Cameron Jeffrey Wilson, 27, was carrying a pistol in his front pocket while in his
Cashmere, Wash., apartment on April 5
when the firearm accidentally discharged and
pierced his groin and thigh, according to the
Wenatchee World News.
Wilson, who is a 13-time convicted felon,
told his girlfriend to dispose of the weapon
before heading to the hospital, the paper said.
When the ex-con finally went to the hospital, a balloon of marijuana slipped out of his anus while a doctor was operating on the gunshot wound, court records show.
Cops also arrived at the hospital when alerted of the gunshot wound and
searched Wilson’s car where they discovered a bag of meth in the bloodstained jeans he was wearing when he shot himself.
The officers issued an arrest warrant for Wilson and he turned himself in to
police on April 18.
As he was being processed at the Chelan County Regional Justice Center,
Wilson was strip-searched and another balloon of marijuana slipped from his
anus, the paper said.
While in jail, Wilson made a number of calls to his girlfriend and asked her
not to cooperate with investigators working on his case. Authorities were listening in on the calls.
The convicted felon was charged with possession of a firearm, unlawful
possession of meth, possession of a controlled substance in a correctional
facility, and four counts of tampering with a witness.
Wilson was being held on $110,000 bail and is due in court on June 18.

An intoxicated man is being accused of trying
to score some medical marijuana after security
cameras caught him trying to break into a Marietta dispensary on June 1.
According to reports, 28-year-old Bryan Charles
Nash had had quite the day. He was first kicked
out of a local festival for trying to steal a hat from a
vendor. Then, the Marietta man seemed to decide
he needed a little herb to accompany his alcohol.
Around 1 a.m., a burglary alarm alerted police
that someone was attempting to break into a dispensary located at Junction 420. When officers
arrived, they found Nash. He had apparently removed the screen off of a window and used a rock
to break the glass.
The man was placed under arrest and transported to jail.
Nash is being charged with attempted burglary in the second degree
and public intoxication. His bond was set at $1,500, and he is scheduled
to appear in court on July 10, 2019.

ARRESTS MADE IN CONNECTION WITH MURDER OF CREEK COUNTY MAN
Two men are in custody after an investigation by
the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI)
and the Creek County Sheriff’s Office connected
them to the murder of 37-year-old Sean Michael
Henderson of Creek County.
Henderson’s body was found floating in floodwater outside of Mannford, Okla., on May 30. The
Creek County Sheriff’s Office requested that the
OSBI assist with the investigation after deputies
discovered evidence that Henderson’s death was a
result of foul play.
An anonymous tip called into CrimeStoppers on
June 2 led investigators to a residence in the 4600
block of 65th West Avenue in Tulsa. Agents say
Henderson went to the residence where 63-yearold Paul Edward Carrier was living and got into an
argument with him. Carrier then shot Henderson in
the backyard of the residence, killing him. Carrier
and 45-year-old David W. Davidson then disposed
of Henderson’s body in a flooded-area outside of
Mannford.
On June 4, Davidson was arrested at his home
in Tulsa without incident. He was booked into the
Creek County jail and charged with First Degree Murder and Desecration of
a Human Corpse. On June 5, an arrest warrant was issued for Carrier. At approximately 6:30 that evening, Carrier was arrested in Tulsa without incident.
He is also in the Creek County jail facing charges of First Degree Murder and
Desecration of a Human Corpse.
This investigation, and subsequent arrests, was a collaborative effort between the Creek County Sheriff’s Office and the OSBI.

Child porn suspect nabbed after investigation
After two long months of detective work by
several law enforcement agencies, an arrest
has been made in the case of a man accused
of possessing copious amounts of child pornography.
Timothy Edward Barnett, 45, of Ardmore,
was charged May 23 with two counts of felony
possession of child pornography, distributing
obscene material to minor child, and violation
of OK statute via computer, in Carter County
District Court.
According to court information, on May 17,
after obtaining a search warrant, investigators
found thousands upon thousands of child pornographic images on an external hard drive
at his home, located in the 3400 block of N.
Commerce.
Count 1 alleges he had over 45,000 child pornography files, and Count 2 alleged he was in possession of over an additional 6,000 child pornography files.
County 3 alleges he knowingly distributed obscene material or child pornography on or about on April 20, 2019.
County 4 alleges Barnett stored the graphic images in “a computer network[,]
for the purpose of using such access to possess and distribute child pornography”.
Counts 1 and 2 are punishable by imprisonment of not more than life in
prison, if convicted, and will be required to register as a sex offender. Count 3
is punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine up to $10,000, or
both, if convicted, and Count 4 is punishable by imprisonment of not more than
five years or a fine of $5,000, or both, if convicted.
The Ardmore Police Department, with help from the Oklahoma State Bureau
of Investigation and the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, finally found Barnett
two months after “an attempt to find his exact location.”
Barnett was taken to the Carter County jail and booked. Bond was set at
$500,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court July 11 at 9:00 a.m. for his
preliminary conference.

whiskey road
30-year-old Michael Joe Abril was put behind bars on June 7 for allegedly stealing a
bottle of whiskey and leading officers on a
pursuit that spanned three counties.
Reports state the ordeal began when the
Haskell man went into a Kingston liquor store
around 1:30 p.m. and stole a bottle of liquor.
When officers saw the man speed through
some construction on Highway 70 near Dallas Drive, nearly taking out 7 construction
workers, the pursuit was on.
Officers reached speeds in excess of 130
mph while they chased after the whiskeystealing man.
The pursuit went through Marshall County,
Johnston County and Carter County, but it all came to a stop when Dickson officers put out some spike strips on Highway 199, hitting one of Abril’s
tires. The man drove off the road, almost colliding with some trucks that were
parked at a local business.
When officers placed Abril under arrest, they noticed that he smelled
strongly like alcohol – go figure. They also found an additional bottle of liquor
in his car.
Abril is being charged with endangering other while eluding/attempting to
elude police officer, two counts of running a roadblock, driving while impaired,
larceny of merchandise from a retailer, transporting an open container of liquor and driving under suspension. His bond was set at $100,000, and he is
scheduled to appear in court on June 20, 2019.

two jailers, five inmates charged
with beating inmate
A late apology letter involving some smokeless tobacco resulted in the arrest of seven men after they allegedly beat an inmate – two were employed
as jailers at the facility.
According to reports, the victim was allowed to use his smokeless tobacco
as a trustee, but he wasn’t allowed to take it into his cell. Well, he did anyway
and was told to write an apology letter. Apparently, he took too long penning
the apology, so the men attacked him around 6 p.m. on April 21.
Neither one of the jailers reported the incident to their superiors.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate
the assault that included jailers Devin Scott Denton, 26, and 22-year-old Kyle
Alexander Tecumseh, on May 17.
Witnesses to the incident included other inmates and three jail employees.
The inmates charged in the assault are Nicholas Cody Smith, 33, Woodrow
Trey Greenback, 47, Matthew Ian Hicks, 38, John Edward Percell, 25, and
Scotty Ramone Spaulding, Jr., 30.
All seven men are being charged with maiming, conspiracy, and assault and
battery. The five inmates are also being charged with gang-related offense.
Denton’s bond was set at $5,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court
on July 10, 2019.
Tecumseh’s bond was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in
court on July 17.
Smith’s bond was set at $30,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court
on June 26.
Greenback’s bond was set at $30,000, and he was scheduled to appear in
court on June 19, 2019.
Hicks’s bond was set at $30,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court
on June 26, 2019.
Percell’s bond was set at $10,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court
on July 10, 2019.
Spaulding’s bond was set at $30,000, and he is scheduled to appear in
court on June 26, 2019.
