Fatal Stabbing in Indian Country
Leads to Five-Year Prison Sentence
Sage Atheakee Gomez, 23, a member of
the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, has been sentenced to five years in prison for involuntary
manslaughter, announced U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Downing.
According to court documents, on September 15, 2018, Gomez stabbed B.L.W., a
member of the Tonkawa Tribe, at a rural residence on Indian land near Ponca City. The
victim died of his wounds on October 2. Gomez has been in federal custody since his arrest in late September 2018.
On October 16, 2018, a federal grand jury
charged Gomez with three federal crimes:
voluntary manslaughter “upon sudden quarrel and heat of passion” in Indian Country, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon in Indian Country, and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in Indian
Country. On March 8, 2019, Gomez pleaded guilty to a superseding information that charged him with involuntary manslaughter. In particular, the new
charge alleged that when he stabbed the victim during an altercation, Gomez
committed a reckless act “without due caution and circumspection, which
might produce death.”
After a lengthy hearing, U.S. District Judge Charles B. Goodwin sentenced
Gomez to five years in the custody of the Bureau of Prisons, to be followed by
three years of supervised release. This prison sentence is above the advisory
imprisonment range under the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. The court also
ordered Gomez to pay $6,890.27 in restitution to cover funeral expenses. Of
that amount, $5,500 will go to the Tonkawa Tribe and $1,390.27 will go to the
Oklahoma Crime Victims Fund.

Wynona Man Admits to Dismantling
and Stealing Oil Field Equipment
A Wynona man pleaded guilty on October 16 in U.S. District Court for dismantling
and stealing oil pumping rig equipment from
pump jacks in Osage County, announced
U.S. Attorney Trent Shores.
Lee Charles Smith, 32, pleaded guilty to
Destruction of an Energy Facility. In his plea
agreement, Smith admitted to dismantling
and stealing the oil pumping rig equipment
from Sept. 14 through Sept. 17, 2018.
“The oil and gas industry is the life blood of
the Oklahoma economy. Lee Charles Smith
dismantled pump jack rig motors in Osage
County to sell for parts. His thievery was an
attack on the livelihood of all Oklahomans,”
said U.S. Attorney Trent Shores. “I’m proud of the investigative team for bringing Smith to justice. He caused in excess of $30,000 in damages and disrupted valuable production time. This United States Attorney’s Office will work
with our law enforcement partners to prosecute the destruction and theft of
pumping equipment.”
U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell accepted Smith’s plea and set sentencing for Jan. 16, 2020.
The Osage County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation
and FBI conducted the investigation.

pawn shop cowboy
A Pawnee man was taken into custody after he went on a multi-county crime spree in
Payne and Osage counties that left several
horses and their owners without their saddles
and gear.
Augustus Sioux May, 20, of Pawnee, was
charged October 10 with knowingly concealing
stolen property, in Osage County District Court.
He also faces other felony charges of assault
and battery with a dangerous weapon and malicious injury to property.
According to the Texas and Southwestern
Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA), the investigation began Sept. 10, 2019, when a victim contacted the Payne County
Sheriff’s Office to report the burglary of his barn in rural Payne County.
Numerous items were stolen, including three trophy saddles, headstalls,
tie-downs, saddle pads, custom bits, custom spurs and boots. The stolen
property was worth more than $15,000.
Deputy David Sloan initiated the investigation, and TSCRA special ranger John Cummings, who was also contacted by the victim, joined the
investigation shortly after.
On September 12, Cummings received information that two of the saddles were pawned at a Perkins pawn shop. They also learned that the
suspect unsuccessfully attempted to sell the third saddle at a pawn shop
in Cushing. Surveillance footage from the two pawn shops led investigators to a vehicle of interest, which in turn led them to May.
TSCRA special ranger Bart Perrier and investigator Steve Talburt of the
Osage County Sheriff’s Office located May at an Osage residence and set
up surveillance. When Sloan and other investigators got to the scene with
an arrest warrant, May was taken into custody without incident.
In an interview with investigators, May admitted to burglarizing the barn
and pawning the three custom saddles — he eventually sold the third
saddle at a pawn shop in Pawhuska. He also led authorities to a remote
cabin where he turned over the stolen custom spurs. Those items were
later returned to the victim.
Investigators did not recover the other stolen items. According to May,
they were thrown away or otherwise discarded.
“This case is a great example of multiple state and local law enforcement
agencies working together to solve a crime, recover stolen property and
bring the person responsible to justice,” said Cummings. “We were able to
resolve the case quickly due to the outstanding cooperation and diligent
work of all involved.”

Someone in Washington State Donated A
Weed-Filled Cooler Worth $24K To Goodwill
If you have junk you
need to get rid of; Goodwill is the place to go. But
of course, one man’s trash
is another man’s treasure.
A Goodwill in Monroe,
Washington State, received a not-so-ordinary
donation. While sorting
through donations, employees scored a cooler full of weed. Not just a couple
grams, but five whole bags full. Talk about a surprise.
Employees discovered the weed while sorting through donations that day.
So, they decided to call the cops.
Police attempted to track down the cooler’s owner, but the mission was
unsuccessful since they didn’t know if it was donated at this location or at a
Goodwill trailer that sits in another town.
Meanwhile, a lot of people on social media are claiming the cooler is theirs.
According to Debbie Willis of the Monroe Police Department, no one has yet
to fetch it, though.
Believe it or not, pot isn’t the strangest contribution to come through Goodwill’s doors. In fact, people commonly leave the most random of things behind
with their donated goods.
According to Katherine Boury, a spokesperson for Goodwill, employees
once came across three human skulls.
“In 2014, three human skulls were found. We worked with authorities to
track down the origin of the Native American skull for proper burial.”
Two of the skulls had been used for medical research, while the other one
was a Native American skull that was more than 100 years old.
So, what’s the pending date of the donated cannabis? According to Willis,
it’s only a moment of time before it goes to waste.
“It’s sitting in our evidence, waiting yearly burn of that type of evidence.”
At the present time, it’s legal in Washington to possess once ounce of cannabis if you’re 21 and over. The donated stash was 60 times over that limit.

KICK HIM WHEN HE’S DOWN
Three members of the Haga family, all from
Pawnee, are facing multiple charges after they allegedly stole from a man’s home while he was in
jail.
According to the affidavit, the victim reported
that his home had been burglarized on July 23.
He told a Pawnee County deputy that several
items had been stolen from his house while he
was incarcerated. He said Janet Gwen Haga, 62,
had his wallet, but she gave it back to him when
he was released from jail. The man said his social
security card had also been used for a total of
$450. He told the deputy he had texts from Janet
admitting she took his stuff. The victim showed
the deputy those texts on September 24.
On October 1, deputies went to Janet’s residence, but she wasn’t home. They spoke with
43-year-old Joshua Allen Haga and another man,
who said Janet and Isaac Lowell Haga, 34, had
stolen stuff from the victim’s residence. They said
the victim had retrieved his property.
One of the deputies asked Joshua about the
air conditioning units in his camper. He admitted
they belonged to the victim.
The men told the deputies some stolen tools
had been sold. The deputies spoke to the buyer
and retrieved the stolen items.
On October 2, deputies spoke to Janet, who
admitted to stealing stuff with Isaac. She said
both she and Isaac used the victim’s debit card.
On October 4, Janet and Joshua met with deputies and turned over some
tools, fishing supplies and other items they admitting to taking from the victim’s
residence.
On October 8, deputies interviewed Isaac. The man also admitted to stealing stuff with Janet, using the victim’s debit card, and selling the man’s tools.
Janet Haga is being charged with burglary in the second degree, knowingly
concealing stolen property, taking/receiving stolen credit or debit card, and
receiving money/good/service through forged/revoked credit card. Her bond
was set at $10,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on November
26, 2019.
Isaac Haga is being charged with burglary in the second degree, knowingly
concealing stolen property and receiving goods through forged credit card.
A warrant was issued for his arrest on October 17, 2019, in the amount of
$10,000.
Joshua Haga is being charged with burglary in the second degree and
knowingly concealing stolen property. His bond was set at $5,000, and he is
scheduled to appear in court on November 26, 2019.

An altercation over a possibly stolen jacket sent one
man to the hospital and one man to jail.
Dewey man Gregory Kent Mundine, 57, was the one
who went to jail - he appeared in court at the Washington County Courthouse on October 9 to face charges of
assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
Reports state Mundine allegedly cut a man with a
box knife. The two men started arguing about a jacket
that had possibly been stolen. The argument turned
physical, and the men started wrestling on the ground.
When the victim stood up, he noticed that Mundine had
cut him in the head with a box knife.
A witness at the scene started driving the victim to
the hospital.
On the way there, they were stopped because the
vehicle they were driving in had a defective brake light. The driver and victim told
the officer who stopped them what had happened.
An ambulance was dispatched to the scene to attend to the victim’s approximate 8-inch gash on his forehead.
Mundine is being charged with assault, battery, or assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after former conviction of a felony. His bond was set at $50,000,
and he is scheduled to appear in court on November 1, 2019.

More than 100,000 children and
youth in the U.S. foster care system are awaiting permanent families. National Adoption Month is a
time to raise awareness about the
adoption of children and youth
from foster care.
The Children’s Bureau in partnership with AdoptUSKids and
Child Welfare Information Gateway sponsors the initiative each November as a way to focus public attention on the urgent need for adoptive families for children and youth waiting
in foster care for a permanent family. This year’s focus, “Partnering for
Permanency,” builds on the social media theme from last year. A special
web page on Information Gateway’s website helps child welfare professionals, prospective adoptive parents, and youth partner for permanency.
The website contains resources, stories, and videos on topics such as getting started with social media, how to build a recruitment campaign, and
how social media impacts child welfare and adoption. The website can be
found at http://www.childwelfare.gov/adoption/nam/.
