april is child abuse
prevention month
We All Can Play a Part in Keeping
Children Safe and Families Strong
This month and throughout the year,
Jailbirds encourages all individuals and
organizations to play a role in making
Oklahoma a better place for children
and families. By ensuring that parents
have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help prevent child abuse
and neglect by making meaningful connections with children, youth and families in our communities.
Research shows that protective factors are present in healthy families. Promoting these factors is among the most effective ways to reduce the risk of
child abuse and neglect. They are:
• Nurturing and attachment
• Knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development
• Parental resilience
• Social connections
• Concrete supports for parents
• Social and emotional competence of children
April is a time to celebrate the important role that communities play in protecting children and strengthening families. Everyone’s participation is critical.
Focusing on ways to connect with families is the best thing our community
can do to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect.

faith
By Christian Ryan
Life is a series of struggles and pain. The
way we deal with this pain is what defines
us, not the situation- the way that we react
to it.
I know in my personal walk, my life has
been nothing but a struggle. One of the biggest was when my mom was battling cancer.
It was 2009. We had only been in Oklahoma
for two years. We’d moved here from North
Carolina because of financial problems. We
had family In Cushing, OK, so they offered to help my mom get back
on her feet. She was divorced and a single mother struggling to raise
two kids: my sister Chloe and myself.
We got settled into a rent house my uncle owned. He’s agreed to
provide it rent free until my mom got a job. She soon got a job. She
was also going to nursing school. We never had much money, but we
did have enough to get by.
Right when things were beginning to get better, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. I still remember the night she told me. I was so
afraid of losing my mom. After the tears, I decided I would be by her
side and help her through it. Things began to go gradually downhill at
first, but then quickly everything was falling apart.
We had no money so the hot water and electric was being turned
off regularly. On top of that, the only food we had to eat was donations
from the Salvation Army or the church. At this time, I was about 9 years
old and I was faced with a very big obstacle. I had no guidance, my
parents were divorced, and my dad was never in the picture. This left
me with a choice. I could either give up or press on.
I picked myself up and helped my mother through her treatment of
chemo and radiation. I would cook her meals and care for her when
she was sick in bed. My sister, on the other hand, was not involved and
she was living her teenage years being rebellious and irresponsible. It
was just my mom and I left to fend for ourselves.
Through this experience, one thing I held on to was that God was going to heal my sick mother. Through her losing her hair and becoming
bedridden, I had faith and never quit believing. By the grace of God,
the cancer was gone in 2013. She was, and today is still, a survivor.
This is just an example about an obstacle in life. There are many of
stories, just like mine, in the world, but something people don’t understand is these terrible obstacles in life are good because, from them,
we learn and grow as individuals.
I personally believe that God allows us to go through struggles to
keep us humble and to rely on Him because no matter how strong we
are no one can face the battle of life alone. No matter how difficult your
situation is, don’t give up, because for every obstacle in life, there is a
reward. But to receive it, you need to be strong and have faith.

McAhren back in Oklahoma
A child abuser from Lawrence, Kansas,
has been returned to Oklahoma to face several felony charges.
Jefferson Boyd McAhren, 22, was charged
February 14 with two counts of causing,
aiding, and/or abetting minor in drug crime,
abuse of child, and lewd molestation/indecent proposal to a child in Pushmataha District Court.
At the request of the Pushmataha County District Attorney’s Office, OSBI opened a
case of a child molested by his mother’s boyfriend. The investigation revealed McAhren
lived with his girlfriend and her three children
at the Oakmont Estates in Antlers in 2016.
During that time, he allowed one of the three children to sleep with him. While
in the bed, McAhren pulled the girl close to him and kissed her on the mouth
while rubbing her bottom.
OSBI forensically interviewed the three children. They disclosed that
McAhren also allowed them to smoke marijuana.
McAhren and the children’s mother eventually split and McAhren moved to
Kansas.
Earlier this month, a detective with the Lawrence, Kansas, Police Department interviewed McAhren. He admitted kissing the girl and rubbing his hand
on her bottom while sleeping in the same bed. He also admitted to allowing
the children to smoke marijuana.
McAhren was returned to Oklahoma and booked into the Pushmataha
County Jail on March 6. He is scheduled to appear before a judge on March
21 with proof of an attorney. Bond was set at $25,000.

Q&A: I am worried that my loved one is
driving while using drugs. What do I do?
If you share a vehicle, you should demand that your loved one see a physician before using the car again. This can
be very inconvenient for both of you, but
it is imperative that drug users not drive.
Your loved one’s life, yours, and others’ could be at risk.
In many cases, you may not be able to
control your loved one’s ability to drive.
You must tell him or her that the single most responsible thing to do is not
drive while using drugs (including abusing prescription medications). All drugs
can impair skills necessary for the safe operation of a vehicle, including motor skills, balance and coordination, perception, attention, reaction time, and
judgment. Even small amounts of some drugs can have a measurable effect
on driving ability.
Drugs also affect people’s ability to tell if they are impaired—so you might
have to make some difficult choices. If you believe your loved one is driving
and impaired, you should consider calling law enforcement. This can be a
difficult decision, but sometimes court intervention can actually help force a
loved one to seek help. For more see our DrugFacts on drugged driving.
If you are an employer and suspect an employee is using drugs, you should
immediately suspend any driving privileges while you get it sorted out. You
can contact this government helpline to find out more about workplace drug
testing: Drug-Free Workplace Helpline: 800-967-5752 (800-WORKPLACE) or

12 | APRIL 2018 BRYAN COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
blowin’ in the wind
Two Durant residents were locked up after
officers found drugs and other items in their
possession on March 6.
30-year-old Joshua Micah Jackson and Brenae Klarissa White, 25, were allegedly peddling
drugs out of their home.
According to the affidavit, a Durant officer
was advised that a man driving a black car had
been delivering illegal narcotics in the Durant
area. On March 6, the officer saw the suspect
vehicle parked at a house in the 1000 block of
North Seventh.
A short while later, he saw the vehicle traveling southbound on North First. He noticed the
car travel over the centerline. He stopped the
vehicle and made contact with Jackson, who
said he was having trouble driving due to the
wind.
The car smelled like marijuana.
Another officer walked his K9 around the vehicle. The dog alerted to the presence of drugs.
Officers found 36 hydrocodone pills and a
green leafy substance stowed away in the car.
Jackson was arrested and transported to jail.
Later that day, the officer returned to the residence where he had first spotted the vehicle
parked. When he knocked on the door, he was
greeted by a strong smell of marijuana. No one
came to the door, so he left and obtained a
search warrant. He returned a couple hours later but once again, no one
answered the door when he knocked.
The officer entered the home using a key he had gotten from Jackson
earlier that day. While searching the home, he found White in the kitchen. He placed her in handcuffs, and officers continued to go through the
house. They located several 5-gallon buckets containing a green leafy
substance, a baggy containing meth, digital scales, cocaine and other
paraphernalia. Officers also found a shotgun and two pistols – one of the
pistols had been reported stolen from Calera.
Jackson is being charged with trafficking in illegal drugs within 2,000
feet of a school, possession of firearm during commission of a felony and
unlawful possession of controlled drug with intent to distribute.
White is being charged with trafficking in illegal drugs within 2,000 feet of
a school, possession of firearm during commission of a felony and unlawful possession of controlled drug with intent to distribute within 2,000 feet
of school.
Their bonds were set at $100,000, and they are scheduled to appear in
court on May 9, 2018.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

Rosson, Goodwin arrested after
standoff
A wanted couple and an elderly man are
in trouble after they allegedly engaged in a
6-hour standoff with multiple law enforcement agencies on March 4.
According to reports, deputies with the
Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office, along with
Choctaw Tribal police officers, Hugo police
officers and troopers with Oklahoma Highway
Patrol, went to a home three miles south of
Boswell to arrest 34-year-old Cheynne Lee
Rosson. The man had a warrant for his arrest
for felony child sexual abuse, lewd molestation and obstructing justice.
When they arrived, they were met by Rosson and his Fort Towson girlfriend, Brandy
Goodwin, who was also wanted for drug
charges out of Texas.
The couple didn’t exactly give the officers a
warm welcome, however. They holed up inside the home, along with an elderly man they
had been living with.
All three refused to exit the residence, despite officer commands. The trio kept themselves barricaded inside the house for several
hours, until a SWAT team drove them out of
the dwelling with tear gas.
Rosson and Goodwin were immediately arrested and transported to jail.
The elderly man was transported to the
hospital – reports state he will be arrested at
a later date for harboring a fugitive.
