online dating disater
An El Reno man bought his long distance
girlfriend a plane ticket to visit him, only to allegedly kidnap and beat her while they were
together.
According to reports, a distraught woman
called 911 on June 12. Through her crying and
pleading, dispatchers determined she was a
passenger in a vehicle she didn’t want to be in.
Canadian County deputies were dispatched
to intercept the vehicle on Highway 66. The
call disconnected east of El Reno, but officers
were able to determine the name of the woman who had called them. They contacted her
family members, who led them to Otterbine.
Believing the woman was most likely with
Otterbine at the time of the call, they headed
to his home. Before they arrived, the victim
contacted police and said she had managed to escape her captor and was at
a local business approximately two miles from Otterbine’s house. When officers
found the woman, she was in shock and covered in bruises.
Officers went to Otterbine’s residence and placed him under arrest.
The victim told officers she met Otterbine online a couple months earlier. The
started dating, and she agreed to travel from her home in Miami, Florida, to
meet him. She said the man paid for her plane ticket.
While she was visiting, Otterbine became increasingly physically violent toward her. During one argument, he duct taped and handcuffed her to a chair.
He also bound her and locked her in a dark basement. The woman said Otterbine threatened to kill her several times and also threatened to kill himself.
Otterbine admitted to doing the things the woman said but he insisted it was
consensual. He said she enjoyed “rough sex.” The man also said his 10-yearold son had been present during one of the couple’s, what he referred to as,
“spats.”
Otterbine is being charged with domestic abuse. His bond was set at $5,000,
and he is scheduled to appear in court on July 27, 2018.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

KANSAS MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO
FEDERAL HATE CRIME CHARGES
Adam W. Purinton, of Olathe, Kan., pleaded
guilty today in federal court to hate crime and firearm charges for shooting Indian nationals Srinivas
Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani and Olathe resident Ian Grillot at Austins Bar & Grill in February
2017.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister, Acting Associate Attorney Purinton previously pleaded guilty to state
charges for murder and attempted murder arising
out of the shooting. He was sentenced earlier in
May to life in state prison.
A few weeks before the shooting, Purinton was
sitting by himself in the bar area at Austins Bar
& Grill when, coincidentally, Kuchibhotla and Madasani happened to be having a drink on the patio. Noticing the two men,
Purinton commented to a regular sitting at the bar, “Did you see the terrorists
on the patio?”
On Feb. 22, 2017, Purinton drove to Austins Bar & Grill and sat by himself
at a table on the enclosed front patio. Sitting at the table to his left were Ian
Grillot and several other patrons. Sitting at the table to his right were Srinivas
Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani.
At approximately 6:40 p.m., Purinton approached Kuchibhotla and Madasani, and demanded to know where they were from and how they entered
the country. Purinton poked Kuchibhotla in the chest, called him a “terrorist”
and an epithet disparaging persons of Middle Eastern descent, and shouted,
“Get out of my country!” Ian Grillot and another patron interceded, told Purinton that he needed to leave, and escorted him out of the bar.
Purinton drove home and retrieved one of his guns: a Taurus PT111 Millennium Pro nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistol with serial number TEW13121.
To disguise his identity, Purinton changed into a different shirt and grabbed a
blue-and-white scarf.
At approximately 7:12 p.m., Purinton returned to Austins Bar & Grill. He
wrapped the scarf around his face to disguise his identity and exited his truck
carrying his semi-automatic pistol. Purinton walked over to the enclosed front
patio, opened the door, aimed his semi-automatic pistol at Kuchibhotla and
Madasani, and fired eight rounds—at least four of which struck Kuchibhotla,
who died from his injuries, and one of which struck Madasani, who was injured, but survived. Hours after the shooting, Purinton stated over the phone
to a friend, and later in person to a bartender, that he had just killed some
Iranians.
Purinton admitted that he shot Kuchibhotla and Madasani, attempting to kill
both men, because of their race, color, religion, and national origin.
After shooting Kuchibhotla and Madasani, Purinton ran out, and Ian Grillot
chased after him. As Grillot caught up to him, Purinton turned around and
shot Grillot, who was injured but survived.
Purinton faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, which is the sentence that the prosecution and defense are
jointly requesting. Sentencing is scheduled for July 2.

There are a lot of situations where slang is a bad idea; and asking for “dough”
at a pizza joint is certainly a good example. Funny enough though, the robbers
who made off with a bagful of dough weren’t even victims of a bad pun, they
were just stupid enough to point to a bag behind the counter without verifying
that the bag held money instead of pizza ingredients. The moral of the story is
that when holding someone up, you’re much better off asking them to hand
over the cash than simply pointing to a random bag in the store.
“That’s not mine” just might be one of the oldest excuses in the book when it
comes to illicit substances. While plenty of suspects have tried to say their drug
stash belonged to their friends, most of them weren’t stupid enough to say it
about crack in their butt crack. Even if it was his friend’s crack, it certainly was
under his “control” at the time of the arrest, and that’s all that really matters.
There’s a reason real drug dealers have such a vicious reputation to uphold.
After all, if someone takes their supply, it’s not like they can just call the police.
Amateur drug cultivators aren’t always hip to these rules, which is why it’s not
entirely surprising that a small-time marijuana grower called the police when
someone stole one of his prized plants. The police responded to the crime
immediately –by confiscating his four remaining plants.
Robbing a store is a big gamble. Aside from the risk of getting caught, there’s
also a risk that there won’t be much money in the register at the time. If you
lose that gamble and end up only getting $586 in the hold up (which is actually
pretty decent for a Wendy’s), you probably shouldn’t call the store to complain.
One man learned this the hard way after police tracked him down when he
called a second time to tell the workers they’d better have more money in the
register the next time he robs them.
Everyone loves to get off work early, but it’s one thing to want a half day and
another to commit an act of arson just to get off work. Michelle Perrino caught
the attention of coworkers when she later talked about how the fire started in a
file cabinet before office workers had been informed of the origin of the blaze.
It may not be illegal to be sexist, but it is definitely against the law to hold
your mother hostage when she refuses to do your ironing for you. When Robert
Edward Tyrrell Jr.’s mother said she wouldn’t do his ironing, he yelled, “ironing is
woman’s work,” pulled out a gun and held her hostage for six hours. When he
let her go, she drove straight to the police station to report him.
The whole point of a getaway car is to make a quick, nonchalant escape
from the scene of the crime. While you don’t want the car to be stolen while
you are out committing the crime, if you can’t keep track of your keys, it might
be better to just leave your car open. That’s what Jane Murray found out when
she returned to her getaway car after a bank robbery. She ended up having to
breakout her car window to get back in.

Thank you and God Bless

field of dreams
A wanted Cordell man led several law enforcement agencies on a chase through a field
in Washita County via a stolen ATV on June
22.
The police report states that a man contacted the Washita County Sheriff’s Office at 6:53
a.m. and advised he had chased a red ATV off
his property that morning. He said he saw a
gun case strapped to the vehicle.
The previous evening, a woman had also
contacted the sheriff’s office regarding the
man on the ATV. She said the driver, 40-yearold Jerry Don Smith, had left her in a field after
crashing the ATV into a fence. She said the
man was paranoid and thought cops were
chasing him. She told officers Smith fired a
gun at what he thought were law enforcement
officers and threatened “suicide by cop.”
On the morning of the 22nd, a deputy was traveling down E1170 ½ mile
west of Grant Street when he saw a red ATV traveling at a high rate of speed
through a field around 8:20 a.m. Additional units, including state troopers and
Cordell police, sped to the scene to help apprehend the man.
At one point, the ATV became stuck in some railroad tracks north of 14th
and Cook Street. Officers ran to the scene, but Smith was able to get free. He
drove toward some officers, and the officers fired at the man. Smith crashed
into a fence and took off running.
Around 11 a.m., a deputy saw the suspect running back toward the railroad
tracks. A state trooper eventually located Smith and placed him under arrest.
The red ATV he was driving during the ordeal had been reported stolen
out of Custer County. The man also had active felony warrants for his arrest
through Custer County and Washita County.
Smith is being charged with knowingly concealing stolen property and obstructing an officer. His bond was set at $100,000, and he is scheduled to
appear in court on August 28, 2018.

What are synthetic cannabinoids?
Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made mind-altering chemicals that are either sprayed on
dried, shredded plant material so
they can be smoked or sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled
in e-cigarettes and other devices.
These products are also known as
herbal or liquid incense.
These chemicals are called
cannabinoids because they are similar to chemicals found in the
marijuana plant. Because of this similarity, synthetic cannabinoids
are sometimes misleadingly called “synthetic marijuana” (or “fake
weed”), and they are often marketed as safe, legal alternatives to
that drug. In fact, they are not safe and may affect the brain much
more powerfully than marijuana; their actual effects can be unpredictable and, in some cases, more dangerous or even life-threatening.
Synthetic cannabinoids are part of a group of drugs called new
psychoactive substances (NPS). NPS are unregulated mind-altering
substances that have become newly available on the market and
are intended to produce the same effects as illegal drugs. Some
of these substances may have been around for years but have reentered the market in altered chemical forms, or due to renewed
popularity.
Manufacturers sell these products in colorful foil packages and
plastic bottles to attract consumers. They market these products
under a wide variety of specific brand names. Hundreds of brands
now exist, including K2, Spice, Joker, Black Mamba, Kush, and
Kronic.
For several years, synthetic cannabinoid mixtures have been easy
to buy in drug paraphernalia shops, novelty stores, gas stations,
and over the internet. Because the chemicals used in them have
no medical benefit and a high potential for abuse, authorities have
made it illegal to sell, buy, or possess some of these chemicals.
However, manufacturers try to sidestep these laws by changing the
chemical formulas in their mixtures.
Easy access and the belief that synthetic cannabinoid products
are “natural” and therefore harmless, have likely contributed to their
use among young people. Another reason for their continued use is
that standard drug tests cannot easily detect many of the chemicals
used in these products.

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty BLAINE COUNTY 23 | JULY 2018
the law won
Geary man John Darrell Olsen Jr., 34,
is being charged for allegedly stealing a
cellphone from his then-girlfriend’s family
member in April 2016.
According to the affidavit, a woman
contacted an officer on April 6 and said
her niece and her niece’s boyfriend, identified as Olsen, had been at her house the
day before. She said her grandson was
sleeping on the couch and had his cellphone in his possession.
They were outside visiting when Olsen
asked the woman if he could take his
child inside the home since it was cold
outside. She said yes, so Olsen and the
baby went inside. Approximately 30 minutes later, Olsen and his girlfriend left the residence.
When the woman’s grandson woke up the next morning, he couldn’t
find his cellphone. The woman called her niece, and she returned the
phone, but it was missing the SIM card. The niece said she didn’t
know where the SIM card was or if Olsen had it. She said Olsen wasn’t
allowed in her home because of “mistrust arguments.”
Olsen refused to speak to police about the incident.
On June 12, 2018, officers finally caught up with Olsen after a man
reported that Olsen had assaulted him, and after a short foot chase,
he was taken into custody and booked.
Olsen was charged with petit larceny and bail was set at $500.
