Investigators need
help with cold case
Judith Elwell, 5, vanished from her parents’ northwest Oklahoma City home sometime before 9 p.m. July
6, 1967. One of her shoes was found the next day beside
an abandoned house half a block from the Elwell home,
leading police to theorize she lost the shoe while struggling with her kidnapper. No other trace of her turned up.
In the hours and days after her disappearance, hundreds of searchers swept across the area. Individual volunteers mingled with police, firefighters and Civil Air
Patrol workers, and a command post grew outside the
Elwell’s house. After three days the hunt was called off. At
some point over the past four decades, the police case file
was misplaced or destroyed.
Another little girl named Brenda White, 6, from Midwest City, went missing a month after Judith. Unfortunately, hunters found Brenda’s body in November 1967
about 11 miles east of her home in a shallow grave. Judith has never been found. Police believe
on person could be responsible for both disappearances, as they happened so close together.
If you have any information on this case, please call your local police department or contact
Thiessen Detective Agency at 580-284-1616 or [email protected].

A Crawford County, Arkansas, Sheriff’s
reserve deputy was taken into custody after an all-points-bulletin was broadcast
in Oklahoma for his arrest.
Tom Nelson, 45, was taken into custody by Canadian County Sheriff’s Deputies
on I-40 Oct. 21 after he was stopped.
Nelson was wanted for the rape of a
14-year-old child.
According to reports, authorities in
Van Buren sent out a call around 10 a.m.
that day for Nelson, who was suspected
to be armed and possibly traveling west
on I-40.
At around 11:10 a.m. that day, Deputies from the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office’s K9 Criminal Interdiction Unit stopped Nelson’s
black Chevrolet Impala at mile marker 108 and taken out at gunpoint.
Nelson was indeed armed with a hand gun and an assault rifle with
many rounds of ammunition.
Sheriff’s Deputies transported Nelson to the Canadian County Jail
where he was held until he was expedited back to Arkansas.

A Drumright man was taken into custody after he robbed
an adult store in Stillwater and took off with two magazines,
$150, and a new rubber girlfriend.
Jesse Allen Smith, 27, was charged Oct. 15 with robbery with
a dangerous weapon and attempting to elude police in Payne
County District Court.
According to information in the case, Smith went into the
Christy’s Toy Box on N. Perkins Rd. late Oct. 11 and threatened
the clerk with a knife. He then took the blow-up doll, the
magazines and the cash and fled.
Authorities caught up with Smith in his 1999 Ford truck at
the corner of 3rd and Perkins Rd. Smith refused to pull over
and a high-speed chase ensued. At the intersection of Jardot
and Sixth, he blew through the signal light and narrowly missed a patrol car. The chase
ended when Smith crashed his truck into a telephone pole at the end of a dead-end
street and had to be tased into submission.
A knife was recovered from the truck.
Smith was transported to the Payne County Jail and booked in. Bail was set at
$100,000.

CAUSE MINOR TO BE DEPRIVED/
IN NEED OF SUPERVISION
A 37-year-old Mustang man was arrested after he tried to
torch his wife’s house with gasoline.
Brady Garvin Whisenhunt was charged Nov. 6 with
fourth-degree arson, breaking and entering a dwelling without permission, malicious injury to property, and obstructing an officer in Canadian County District Court.
According to court records, Whisenhunt was at the home
in the 600 block of S. Brookview Lane in Mustang, and
poured gasoline throughout a portion of the residence with
every intention of burning it down. Police arrived on scene
before he could finish the job.
Seems Whisenhunt also broke into a neighbor’s home and
did significant damage to her fence, prompting the breaking
and entering and malicious injury to property charges.
Whisenhunt ran from the police, but he was apprehended
a short time later.
If convicted of the arson charge, Whisenhunt could face up to a $5000 fine and up to 10
years in jail, or both; he could get up to one year in prion and up to a $1000 fine, or both, for
the breaking and entering charge; one year in jail and/or a $500 fine, or both for the malicious injury and obstruction charges.

A 23-year-old man was arrested at a Walmart
Nov. 5 after flashing his breast implants at fellow
shoppers before spitting blood at police.
Jeremy Owens, from Pennsylvania, was arrested
for his alleged bizarre behavior at the Lackawanna
County store.
Police found him on a local bus which he then
refused to get off.
After he was arrested and put into a police car,
Owens, who calls himself ‘Jamie’ banged his head
against the window and cut himself, which allowed
him to spit blood at officers.
The 23-year-old was jailed for aggravated
assault, drug possession, and making terrorist threats.
He was not charged for indecent exposure.
Owens was arrested two weeks ago for lying to police about the abduction of a friend
and previously in March following a disturbance at a doughnut shop when he allegedly
spat on two female customers.

Proverbs 22:6 says “Train
up a child in the way he
should go: and when he is
old, he will not depart from
it.”
Children have a wonderful
capacity for trust. The faith
they put in adults is unqualified, and that should humble us; we
often don’t deserve it.
Sometimes kids suffer from intentional betrayal by a trusted
adult, like former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky, recently
convicted of sexually abusing underprivileged young boys. Other
times, they are neglected by society at large, as are the 1.7 million
children with a parent behind bars. Many of these kids face enormous
obstacles, but get little notice.
The Bible affirms that children are a central focus of God.
Our national problem is not that we somehow undervalue children;
it’s that we don’t always know where to look to find the children most
in need of our help. Inmates’ children in particular get placed on
the back burner. They grow up in single-parent homes, or they get
shuffled into foster care. They are five times more likely than their
peers to live in poverty. They often endure confusion, loneliness,
depression, abandonment, social ostracism, and profound anger.
Should we be surprised if they often follow their parents to prison?
It doesn’t take much to ease the burden of an inmate’s family.
Churches—and other people of good will—can incorporate prisoners’
children into their existing programs, like VBS, youth mentoring
programs, or summer camps. They can make sure kids have the
supplies they need to succeed in school, or gifts to celebrate the
holidays; the opportunities are boundless.
If we take seriously the notion that every child has inherent worth
and deserves our society’s nurture and protection, we cannot afford
to ignore children with an incarcerated parent. Like Jesus, we must
reach out to them, and their trust will for once not be betrayed. In
turn we will discover that the blessing goes both ways: They will
teach us what it means to have faith that pleases God, faith that
presses in close, believing everything will be okay.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol
Fall is finally here, and with the
arrival of cooler temperatures and
the turning of the leaves, a lot of
people in Oklahoma head to the
woods to enjoy the fall hunting seasons. Every year, thousands of
people enjoy a safe and enjoyable hunting season, and proper safe
firearms handling is a big reason why. I’m going to touch on some of
these safe firearms handling tips, and hopefully, this will help insure
that we all have a safe hunting
season.
First, lets cover the four basic safety rules for firearms handling.
1: Always treat a firearm as if it were loaded! Never make the
assumption that a gun is unloaded, even if you just saw someone
unload it. Many unintentional discharges of firearms are usually
followed by someone saying, “I didn’t think it was loaded”. 2: Never
point a firearm at anyone or anything that you are not willing to kill
or destroy. Good muzzle discipline is a cornerstone of safe firearms
handling. 3: Always keep your finger (primary safety) off the trigger
and outside the trigger guard until you have made a conscious
decision to shoot. It only takes a fraction of a second to get that finger
on the trigger from outside the trigger guard when you have decided
to make a shot, so there is no reason to have your finger on the trigger
until then. 4: Always make positive target identification, be sure of
your backstop and the area around and beyond your target. This
one is pretty is pretty common sense...you shouldn’t be shooting at
anything that you don’t know what it is! Knowing what is around and
behind what you are shooting at is critical, because bullets can travel
a long, long ways, even after hitting your target in some situations. In
addition to these, I would add to keep all mechanical safeties engaged
until ready to shoot, and re-engage them when done.
A common occurrence in the field while hunting is crossing fences.
This can be done safely by handing your weapon to a partner,
crossing the fence, and having him hand both your’s and their’s over
to you before they cross. If alone, simply unload the gun, set it on the
ground, cross the fence, then retrieve the gun...and make sure you
keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction! Speaking of unloading a
gun, it is very important to do so correctly. Once you think you have
all the cartridges out of the weapon, physically and visually check
both the chamber and the magazine to make sure! When loading,
again, make sure your barrel is pointed in a safe direction! Also, if
you are hunting in an elevated stand, don’t climb up or down with a
loaded weapon!
Following these simple steps can be the difference between a
safe, enjoyable hunting experience, or a trip to the hospital or
worse! Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma
Department of Human Services to impact the huge social
problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the
child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts
order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
It’s ALL about the KIDS!
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they have a chance at a
productive life. Children have the right to get support from both parents and do not
lose this right when a parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children, taxpayers often pay the cost
of raising children. When children receive public assistance and their parents pay no
child support, all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

Child mugshots
of the 1800s
During the Victorian era, kids as young as eleven received adult sentences for minor
crimes. Here’s an assortment of children’s mugshots taken in Newcastle, England during
the early 1870s. From the Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.
Mary Catherine Docherty was
sentenced to 7 days hard labor after
being convicted of stealing iron.
At the age of just 16, this young man
had been in and out of prison, but on
this occasion he was sentenced for 2
months for stealing some shirts.

Two people remain in custody after a Bonnie and
Clyde-style heist went wrong Oct. 16.
Elk City police officer Shawn Tuck was dispatched to the Great Plains National Bank at 9:45
p.m. that day after receiving a report of someone
using a hammer to break into the building. Realizing someone was still inside upon their arrival,
Tuck and the other officers on the scene released
a K-9 dog inside the bank. However, the suspect
escaped.
A further search of the immediate crime scene
area turned up two suspects in the RV park south
of the bank. Maricela Garcia, 27, and her husband,
Gustavo Garcia, 26, were arrested and transported
to the Beckham County Jail.
During a police interview, Gustavo admitted the
pair broke into the bank as well as the First National Bank, adding there was a cleaning woman in one
of the banks when they committed the burglary.
Officers in the area reported Gustavo was wearing a black long-sleeve hooded jacket, with a dark
cloth covering everything on his face but his eyes. The suspect also had a
gun, said detective Sarah Frye in her search warrant request. Frye found
their getaway vehicle and saw a crow bar in the center of the front as well as
a hammer on the passenger side floorboard.
The pair was “just sleeping” in the car when officers arrived, Maricela
said. However, a look inside the Great Plains bank showed two cabinets
were pried open with a crowbar. Also, Frye saw a green container full of
coins nearby. Video footage showed Gustavo dragged the container out of
the bank after breaking into a vault.
Gustavo, who has three other pending burglary charges, was charged
with first and second-degree burglary. His accomplice faces charges of second-degree burglary and concealing stolen property.
Both will appear in court at 9 a.m. Nov. 29.

The key to your freedom
A man accused of a home invasion was taken into custody after
he fell off the top of a round hay bale while trying to get away from
officers.
Horace Bigmedicine, 36, of Watonga, was charged Oct. 24 with
first-degree burglary in Blaine County District Court. His preliminary hearing was set for Jan. 25.
According to the police affidavit, deputies were called to a rural
home northwest of Watonga in reference to a home invasion. A
17-year-old male was at home at the time, along with his 18-monthold nephew. The young man said a man, later identified as Bigmedicine, threw a large rock through a front window, allowing him
to get inside the house. As Bigmedicine was climbing through the
window, the young man yelled at him, but Bigmedicine didn’t stop. The young man then
grabbed his nephew and ran out of the back of the house and called authorities.
When officers arrived, Bigmedicine had already fled, dropping two lap top computers
onto the ground and sidewalk just outside the home.
Bigmedicine was soon spotted hiding just south of the house around some large round
bales of hay. When officers attempted to catch him, Bigmedicine started to run away, dropping a red and white colored purse. It was later discovered the purse was actually a toy.
Bigmedicine, who appeared to be very intoxicated, was quickly apprehended after falling off the hay bale. He was then taken to the Blaine County Jail and booked on the burglary complaint.

Kids are too irresponsible nowadays anyway to be

daughter” hello! people your 16 year old daughter is
having sex...Stop blaming the guys all the time, this
girl is just as guilty.
Tabitha C: We don’t want to send our 16 year old
daughters to school with old perverted men knowing
it’s ok to have sex with them! Can you imagine
every naive, low self esteemed teenage girl dating
a teacher? I want to send them to school knowing
they are safe and there to learn not to get hit on, or
we might as well send them to clubs! Ridiculous! It’s
unprofessional and sick!
Angela D: I agree the age should be raised.
Here in Oregon it is mandated that you become a
sex offender if caught and if you’re over 18 seeing
someone under 18. I think It’s a great law.
Tena S: He KNEW it was illegal for a school
employee to have sex with a student and did it
anyway...PERIOD!
Jessica E: ...its never the child’s fault. They are
young, naive, immature and full of hormones.
Incapable of making an informed decision. The adult
should be held accountable for taking advantage.
Even if the teen is flirting. A teacher should be able
to say no
Brittany B: YAll say to protect ur kids from them
old perverts.... So what about when u send them to
work.. or to the store... Anywhere u go you will have
them certain ppl that go for younger girls/ guys or
older girls/guys... If grades are getting turned better
by him because she is doing them things yes that is
wrong... But if it’s consensual then it’s not really fair
to charge him with rape... She is just as guilty
Amber H: i think he was wrong all the way and it
were my child he wouldnt get away with it nomatter
his excuse thats my opinion
Jennifer V: really?????? outtaline period hes
a grown ass man and she is 16!!!! she might look
grown and maybe she was ok with it but hell no hes
a grown ass man and she is a teenage KID.. i was
mature for my age but still hell no im a 28 year
old woman now and at 16 looking back i had alot
of growing to do and had really no idea about the
world i thought i knew everything about when i was
16 maybe not “rape” but for damn sure a sex crime
and spend time he deserves to have his ass kicked
and thrown in jail. he is 100% a sexual predator. that
just really got under my skin UGH!!
A former high school coach accused of having sex with a
female student fights to have his case dismissed.
The suspect’s attorney said the state’s age of consent law
is unconstitutional.
The controversial legal fight centers on a state law
banning sexual relationships between students and
school employees.
The former educator accused of breaking that law,
Tyrone Nash, allegedly carried on a sexual relationship
with a female student at Western Heights high school.
Nash asked the court to overturn state law.
Under the current law, it would legal for the judge in the case to have consensual
sex with a 16-year-old girl, but Nash, as a former school employee, may not
have the same right.
That’s why the defense said the law should be unconstitutional.
What do you think?

An ex-con faces possible prison time after his arrest on Nov. 4.
Sentinel police chief Rusty Cannon reported receiving a call
about Jason Hanna, 24, harassing a woman at the 800 block of E.
Whitmer. Hanna was accused of making death threats toward the
woman and her family.
When Cannon arrived, he saw Hanna sitting on the ground in
the alley behind the residence. When he tried to speak to Hanna,
he learned Hanna was drunk, as he couldn’t stand on his feet well.
However, that didn’t stop Hanna from running away.
Cannon chased him on foot, but realizing that was ineffective, he
drove to Hanna’s house in anticipation of his arrival. Sure enough,
he saw Hanna running toward his home about five minutes after he
drove there. Cannon ordered Hanna to get on the ground, but he refused to listen.
Cannon tried to put Hanna in handcuffs, but Hanna decided to head-butt the officer with
the back of his head. Cannon then pulled out his taser and stunned Hanna in the middle
of the back. He was then quickly handcuffed. When Cannon tried to help Hanna off the
ground, the suspect began kicking at him, leading the chief to keep him on the ground until
additional officers arrived.
Hanna was charged with assault on a police officer and escaping arrest. He has a previous drug conviction on his record and received a five-year suspended prison sentence.
Hanna remains in the Washita County Jail on a $75,000 bond. He has court set for 9
a.m. Jan. 15.
