CRIME AND PUNSIHMENT
A Tahlequah felony will be spending the next three
years in a federal prison after he was caught with a
firearm during a traffic stop last year.
Richard Dale Lea, 43, was sentenced to 37 months
for illegally possessing a firearm.
The charges arose from an investigation by the
Tahlequah Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
On February 14, 2024, Lea pleaded guilty to one
count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm. According to investigators, on April 9, 2023, Lea was found in possession of two loaded
semi-automatic pistols during the search of a vehicle by Tahlequah Police. At the
time of the investigation, Lea had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by
imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.

AROUND THE NATION
Foiled again
During the early morning hours of November 7, A
Brevard County (Florida) sheriff’s deputy was out on a
leisurely patrol in a wooded area when he came upon
Matthew Korecky who quickly grabbed a piece of aluminum foil, along with a bag containing a green powdery substance that he retrieved from a yellow box near
his feet.
As soon as the confronted Korecky, he tried to hide
the items under his body, hoping the deputy hadn’t seen his actions. Unfortunately for
him, he wasn’t quick enough and the deputy detained Korecky and collected the unknown items. As things progressed, it didn’t take long before the deputy located not only
the drugs he was trying to hide, but more drugs and a firearm that had been reported
stolen out of a nearby police station’s jurisdiction.
In total, Korecky had 17.4g of methamphetamine, 4 pills identified as muscle relaxers,
and approximately 8.3 grams of Fentanyl, which if put into a lethal dose would be enough
to kill just over 4,000 people.
To top it all off, Korecky is a convicted felon and is unable to legally possess firearms,
but clearly he doesn’t obey the law.
The good news is that Korecky is now residing in the big house on no bond, as he was
arrested for Trafficking in Fentanyl, Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession
of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Use/
Display Firearm or Carry Conceal Firearm
During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and

SEARCH AND RESCUE
A Broken Arrow man is being held in the Wagoner County
jail on a $150,000 bond after he allegedly kidnapped a woman
and took her to a wooded area.
In a press release from the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office, on October 23, at 6:30 p.m., Wagoner County Deputy
M. Burnside responded to 5700 Block of South 258th East
Avenue in Broken Arrow for a welfare check. A citizen had
notified the Sheriff’s Office and advised they were concerned
about a friend’s well-being.
While trying to locate the address, the deputy made contact
with a white male subject who identified himself as Alex Johnson. He advised the deputy that the victim lived up the road
and walked away.
The deputy later discovered the man was actually the person they were looking for, Tony W. Ward.
After the deputy left, Ward forced the victim into the car and left the area to avoid law enforcement.
While in the car, she secretly texted a friend to tell them where Ward had taken her. He then took her
to the Lock and Dam 18 area and forced her out of the vehicle. Ward then directed the victim to
“go to the water with him”. The woman was able to break free from Ward and send a message to a
friend stating that she was in fear for her life.
Upon the victim’s friend receiving the troubling message, they notified the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office and provided an update. The friend advised that they were continuing to receive text
messages from the victim stating the suspect was hiding the victim in the Bluff Landing area.
Deputies all proceeded to the area to assist in locating the victim. Upon arriving in the area,
they discovered the victim’s abandoned vehicle at the dead end of 71st Street and 385th. Deputies
began searching the heavily wooded area and located the suspect, identified as Ward. Deputies
gave the suspect commands to surrender, and he did so without incident. Upon placing Ward into
custody, deputies recovered a loaded 9mm pistol and a large machete on the ground next to him.
When asked about the woman’s location, the suspect initially denied knowing her. Ward then stated
he was with the woman earlier that morning, before admitting that she was still in the woods.
Deputies heard the woman screaming and continued searching the wooded area until they located her stuck in a thorn thicket. The deputies assisted the victim out of the thorns and contacted
Broken Arrow EMS to assess any injuries.
Upon being placed into custody, Ward was transported to the Wagoner County Detention Center and booked into same. He was charged with the following: Domestic Assault and Battery by
Strangulation, Forcible Sodomy, Kidnapping, possession of Firearm during commission of a Felony,
and Possession of CDS.
If you suspect someone is a victim of domestic violence, you are encouraged to contact the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office to report the information at 918-485-3124. You may remain anonymous
when reporting any crime.
You may reach out to Help-in-Crisis, located at 901 Southeast 10th Street in Wagoner, OK. You
can speak with a Domestic Violence advocate by calling 918-485-7003 or 1-800-300-5321. The
Help-in-Crisis Hotline is an integral program starting as an entry point for any victims or survivors of
domestic violence who are seeking help. A Help-in-Crisis advocate can assist you with many issues
involving domestic violence or sexual assault, ensuring you do not have to do it alone.
The Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office and Help-in-Crisis will continue to partner in Wagoner County
to provide resources to victims of domestic violence. CRYSTAL

THAT'S METHED UP!
Officers recently found and seized almost $6 million worth of methamphetamine in less than two weeks at the United States-Mexico
border, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced. Officials
said the drug hauls were discovered in two separate incidents, hidden
inside a shipment of celery and wrapped in packaging designed to resemble watermelons.
The first seizure happened on the evening of August 9, when border agents at the Otay Mesa
Commercial Facility, an inspection port just over the southern border in San Diego, found 629
pounds of methamphetamine in a grocery shipping crate filled with celery. Border Patrol said that
agents discovered the narcotics while performing an inspection on a commercial tractor-trailer, driven by a 34-year-old man with a legitimate border crossing card who entered the U.S. from Mexico
with cargo on board his truck. The driver was transporting a shipment that had been declared as
celery, according to the federal authorities.
Agents used a K-9 unit to do the inspection, which revealed 508 packages that testing later
confirmed contained methamphetamine. Border Patrol said the haul had an estimated street value
of $755,000.
“Our officers’ vigilance and expertise once again thwarted an attempt to smuggle narcotics disguised as everyday produce,” said Rosa Hernandez, the port director for Otay Mesa, in a statement.
As San Diego County contends with a well-documented crisis over methamphetamine abuse that
has run rampant for decades and is linked to smuggling, Hernandez noted in that statement the
agency’s “commitment to protecting our communities from the perils of drug trafficking.”
Less than two weeks after the celery seizure, agents at the same inspection facility in Otay Mesa
discovered an even larger haul of methamphetamine. This time, the produce meant to conceal the
drugs was fake.
Another commercial tractor-trailer, driven by a 29-year-old man said to be transporting watermelons from Mexico into the U.S., was found to contain 1,220 packages of methamphetamine,
according to the Border Patrol. The drugs were wrapped inside packaging that might be mistaken
for watermelon from a distance. But closer inspection revealed the packages were actually filled with
4,587 pounds of meth, a haul with a street value exceeding $5 million, according to the agency.
Both of these seizures came as part of Operation Apollo, an ongoing project to combat trafficking
of fentanyl, a synthetic drug that the U.S. government has declared as a leading source of the current
opioid overdose epidemic in this country. It’s focused in California and Arizona.
The discoveries in California bookended a third, similar incident in Georgia, where agents found more than 2,300 pounds
of meth hidden inside a truck carrying celery at a farmer’s market outside of Atlanta. Earlier this year, six tons of meth were
discovered inside a shipment of squash in California, after
3,000 pounds of the narcotic and cocaine were found
last year in bins of jalapeño
paste that were being transported over the border. Traffickers have also stashed
drugs inside shipments of
green beans, sugar, flour and
candy.

NO ESCAPING JUSTICE
A Stilwell woman’s attempt to escape justice
proved futile earlier this month when a federal just
sentenced her over 15 years in prison on drug
distribution charges.
Miranda Morgan Pauley, 32, was sentenced
on November 7 to 188 months in prison for one
count of Possession of Methamphetamine with
Intent to Distribute.
The charges arose from an investigation by the
Adair County Sheriff’s Office, the Oklahoma Drug
Task Force 27, the United States Marshals Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
On October 12, 2023, Pauley pleaded guilty to possessing over 50 grams of
methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it.
According to investigators, on January 11, 2023, law enforcement officers
learned that John Tillison, an individual with active arrest warrants, was located
at Pauley’s residence. Law enforcement attempted to stop a vehicle driven
by Tillison as it left the residence, but Tillison fled. Law enforcement pursued,
ending the chase by deploying tire deflation devices. Tillison ran from the scene
but was later captured, and Pauley, Tillison’s passenger, was taken into custody.
A search of the vehicle located a loaded revolver between the driver’s seat and
console, along with nearly $18,000 in United States Currency and approximately
890 grams of methamphetamine. Law enforcement officers subsequently executed a search warrant on Pauley’s residence where they discovered another
992 grams of methamphetamine and various rounds of ammunition.
Pauley will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending transportation to
a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility to serve a non-paroleable
sentence of incarceration.

14 | DECEMBER 2024 ADAIR COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
DECEMBER IS NATIONAL IMPAIRED
DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH
Two of the most celebrated dates in December –
Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve – are also among
the most dangerous. In 2018, drunk driving crashes
claimed 108 lives in those two days alone, accounting
for nearly half of total traffic deaths.
That is why Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD)
is teaming up with law enforcement agencies across
the country throughout the month of December, which
has been recognized as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month for the 39th consecutive year.
During December 2018, 839 people died in alcohol-related crashes, according to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While drunk driving deaths typically represent around a third of all traffic fatalities, that increased to nearly 50 percent on Dec. 24
and Dec. 31.
On Dec. 25, 2018, 35 people died in drunk driving crashes.
This is staggering.
The pain caused by one person’s choice to drive impaired is often permanent. Every
single death left a permanent empty seat at the table and turned a time of celebration
into tragedy.
And every single death was 100 percent preventable.
We’re asking everyone to take personal responsibility this holiday season by making
a plan for a safe ride home before your celebrations begin. Designate a non-drinking,
unimpaired driver. Take a taxi, a bus, or a train. Use a rideshare app like Uber. If you’re a
host, provide an alternative to your guests, such as festive, non-alcoholic drinks offered
by our partner Mocktail Beverages.
You can also show your commitment to drive sober by displaying one of our Tie One
On for Safety red ribbons or magnetic decals on your vehicle, which are available at our
local MADD offices around the country.
Drunk driving crashes increase throughout the month of December as more people
travel and attend events where alcohol is served. That is why every U.S. President since
Ronald Reagan has proclaimed December National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.
President Donald Trump continued in that tradition this month, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to prevent tragedies by making the decision to drive sober.
The proclamation also remembers victims of impaired driving, offers prayers for grieving families impacted by these tragedies and honors law enforcement who are on the
front lines of the violent, preventable crime of impaired driving. KENT

ANGRY CHAIR
A Stilwell resident has been sentenced to almost

guilty to the crime.
According to investigators, on January 28, 2024, during an assault that lasted over
