A Memphis, Tennessee, magazine-selling man with a complex
about his race was arrested June 23 after he wouldn’t leave the
people of Collinsville alone.
Shortly after 11 a.m., a Rogers County deputy was dispatched to
E. 146th St. N. due to a suspicious subject. The caller said a “black
male” knocked on his door asking for money. When the man left,
the caller said the man was watching his neighbor’s house.
The suspicious man was later identified as 34-year-old Michael
Deshauna Carruthers. When the deputy located Carruthers walking westbound on 146th Street, the man started accusing him of
harassing him because of his skin color. Carruthers eventually told the deputy he was
just in the area selling magazines.
After checking the man’s information, the deputy told him to have a good day.
Shortly after noon, the deputy received a call from a woman who said Carruthers
knocked on her door. When she answered, he told her, “Most times people will show up
with a gun when they see me at the door.”
The deputy was advised that dispatch was receiving lots of calls about Carruthers
harassing people at their homes.
Another man told police Carruthers came to his door at 12:30 p.m. and asked him to
buy some magazine subscriptions. When the man told him he wasn’t interested, Carruthers became irate and called the man a racist. He told the man he wouldn’t buy anything from him because he was black.
The man told Carruthers to leave his property. Carruthers allegedly told the man that
he had friends with him, and they would be back later that night.
Carruthers was arrested and transported to jail. For the disturbances he was causing
-- not because he’s black.
Carruthers is being charged with threaten to perform act of violence, disturbing the
peace and trespassing after being forbidden. His bond was set at $4,000, and he is
scheduled to appear in court on July 8, 2015.

OSBI has positively identified Joshua P. Crittenden, 35
years of age, as the man shot Saturday, June 27, during an
officer-involved shooting with the Tahlequah Police Department.
According to reports, police were called to the 500 block of
South Mission Street after two men were reportedly arguing
near a stolen Dodge pickup. Both men ran away, and Crittenden reportedly hid in a nearby house.
Witnesses stated that during the encounter, Crittenden,
came out and pointed a handgun at an officer. The officer fired
back. Crittenden was struck and was then taken to the hospital
where he died a short time later.
Crittenden was identified through fingerprints taken by the
Latent Evidence Unit of the OSBI.
A handgun was recovered near Crittenden’s body by OSBI agents processing the scene.
Also arrested at the scene was Benjamin P. Brown, 26 years of age, for multiple outstanding felony warrants out of Cherokee County.
OSBI agents will be conducting further interviews in this on-going investigation. A report
will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation.

A Pontotoc County man recently received a
deferred sentence and paid $946.00 for fines
and court costs, in Pontotoc County District
Court, for killing a young male Black bear.
The incident occurred west of Byng, OK, in
the South Canadian River bottom. The bear
was eating cat food on the man's back porch.
The bear attempted to make a getaway, but
was pursued by the man, and eventually shot.
Recently, bears have been migrating from
southeastern Oklahoma, establishing populations in northeast Oklahoma, and will likely
continue to seek out new territory, wherever
they find suitable habitat. If you see a black bear, the best course of action is to leave it alone.
Black bears are shy animals that will avoid human interaction. To avoid contact, secure
uneaten pet food, trash bins, bird and other wildlife feeders, as they can attract bears.
If you should come upon a bear, we recommend the following:
1. Do not be frightened.
2. Do not approach.
3. Do not run from the bear
but back away slowly.
4. Stand tall and upright and
make loud noises.
5. Avoid direct eye contact.
6. Give the bear a direction to
escape.
7. Never feed bears.
Killing or shooting at a black bear (in closed season or area) is a serious offense, with
a minimum fine of $946.00 and thousands in possible restitution. Violators could also be
punished with a loss of hunting and fishing license privileges for up to 10 years and jail time.
There is black bear hunting season in the four southeastern Oklahoma counties (Latimer,
Le Flore, Pushmataha, and McCurtain). Black bears are protected, in the rest of the state,
due to low population numbers.

stupid criminals
The term “outgunned” doesn’t quite do this story justice. Derrick Mosley
strolled into a discount gun store with a baseball bat, smashed a glass display case and tried to steal a firearm. Yes, he tried to rob a gun shop with
a baseball bat. What happened next? The manager pulled out a gun of his
own, pointed it at Derrick and kept him in the crosshairs until the police arrived. Don’t be too hard on yourself Derrick. Guns in a gun store? Nobody
could have anticipated that.
A customer at Applebee’s handed a waitress her own stolen driver’s license in an attempt to order alcohol. The culprit was a 26-year-old woman,
so she didn’t need to use a fake ID to buy her margarita anyway, but we’ll set
that aside. Kudos to the waitress, who remained calm, told the customer she
was off to get her drink and called the police instead.
Getaway cars are just for the movies. Real criminals use getaway donkeys.
A trio of Columbian robbers in the exotic sounding town Juan de Acosta
loaded stolen rum, rice, tuna and sardines onto Xavi, a 10-year-old donkey.
It was all going to plan, but then the donkey starting “heehawing”. Loudly.
The racket alerted police to the robbery and the burglars ran.
A would-be lumberjack was casually strolling down a suburban street
with an axe in hand when he happened across a bike, which was chained
around a tree. The axeman wanted to acquire this bike for himself. So he
started to chop down the tree, blissfully oblivious to the stares of passers-by.
The bemused spectators chased him away several times, but the lumberjack
was determined. After a period of about seven minutes, he managed to fell
the tree. Unfortunately, the thief was chased away again before he could
claim his prize.
Joey Miller and Matthew McNelly concocted an ingenious disguise before
trying to break into an apartment. Well, we use the term “ingenious” very
loosely. Matthew and Joey spurned more traditional disguises like masks
or balaclavas, instead choosing to draw on their own faces with permanent
markers. Here’s the thing about permanent marker. It’s extremely difficult
to erase. So when the pair was pulled over by police after the bungled breakin, they were easily recognizable. The stunt earned Joey and Matthew the
nickname “dumb and dumber”

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money or
favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting
offi cer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

CONTEMPT OF COURT
A Coffeyville, Kansas, woman was arrested in South
Coffeyville during a traffic stop on June 20 for drugs
and paraphernalia. The woman told police that the
drugs in her possession were from a year ago.
A South Coffeyville officer stopped a vehicle at 5:35
p.m. in the 1500 block of Highway 169 because the
front passenger wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. The officer
was able to identify the driver and three passengers.
One of the passengers was 40-year-old Teresa Renee
Rogers.
While the officer was checking their information, another walked his drug detection dog around the vehicle.
The dog alerted to the odor of illegal narcotics.
All of the car’s occupants were told to get out of the vehicle. When Rogers stepped
out of the car, she was holding a leather-type coin purse and her hands were shaking.
Inside the coin purse, an officer found a small plastic baggie containing a crystal-like
substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, a plastic straw with a powdery residue and a blade that looked like it was from a box knife.
In Rogers’s purse, police found a smoking device that smelled like marijuana.
Rogers told an officer that she had not used that coin purse in about a year, and it
was probably her meth from a year ago. She also admitted to using meth in the past
month.
Rogers was placed under arrest and transported to jail.
Rogers is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance and
unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $5,000, and she is
scheduled to appear in court on July 8, 2015.

Webber
When a Muskogee man was arrested in Jay for attacking his roommate, he really didn’t have a good explanation. He allegedly told an
officer that the victim made him angry because he looked at him.
According to the police report, a Jay police officer was dispatched
to a building in the 200 block of S. Main Street shortly after 9 a.m
on July 29. The victim told him he was sitting outside the building
when one of his roommates, identified as 26-year-old John Michael
Webber, walked up to him and started hitting him. The victim said
Webber knocked him out of the chair and continued to hit him in the
face several more times.
While speaking to the victim, the officer noticed he had cuts about his left eye and below
his right eye. He also had some swelling and bruising below both eyes.
When the officer made contact with Webber, the man still seemed to be angry about
something. The officer asked him what happened between him and the victim. Webber
simply said the victim looked at him, and that made him angry. So, he then apparently
attacked the man.
Webber started to fill out a statement, but he stopped and told the officer he didn’t want
to fill out one.
The officer placed Webber under arrest and transported him to jail.
Webber is being charged with assault and battery. He was released on a $1,000 bond
and is scheduled to appear in court on July 30, 2015.

Sometimes it’s just best to not help your friends out.
Miami man Joseph Matthew Williams, 19, found himself in some trouble when he helped 19-year-old Bo Mason Dowdy of Muldrow push a motorcycle to a trailer.
The men were arrested June 26 because the motorcycle
had been reported as stolen. Williams said he wasn’t
aware that the motorcycle was stolen in the beginning.
Shortly after 7 p.m., a man contacted Muldrow police
and told an officer Dowdy had just shown him where a
stolen motorcycle was located. According to the affidavit, he knew police had been searching for the motorcycle.
Per the caller’s instructions, officers located the stolen
vehicle in a vacant trailer in the 500 block of S. Caddo.
Also in the trailer was a green hat that had “Dowdy”
written on it.
Officers then went to SE Ninth and Caddo, where
they made contact with Williams. Williams admitted
he helped Dowdy steal the motorcycle. He said Dowdy
told him someone had given him the motorcycle, and he
needed help pushing it.
The men pushed the motorcycle to the trailer.
According to Williams, Dowdy then told him the motorcycle was stolen, and he would kill Williams if he told
anyone.
Police found Dowdy in the 200 block of SW Ninth.
He and Williams were placed under arrest and transported to jail.
Both men are being charged with grand larceny and are both scheduled to appear in court on July 8, 2015. Court date was unknown at time of publication.

Carinzo Jaron Evitt, 22, was arrested June 22 because his roommate told
police he was “flipping out again.” The
Wagoner man was transported to jail
after he threw a phone at a kid and spit
on an officer, just to name a few.
According to the police report, Wagoner police received the call from the
roommate shortly after 11 a.m. They
went to a residence in the 600 block
of South Polk, where they saw clothes,
shoes and other items in the front yard,
driveway, and road.
An officer started to exit his vehicle,
but Evitt wasn’t too pleased to see the
popo. He yelled, “Get the f--- out of my yard. Nobody called y’all
mother f------.”
He continued throwing things out of the house.
When the officer asked whose stuff it was, he identified the caller.
The caller told the officer Evitt came in the house slamming doors
and cussing, because he and another man “went and got [Evitt’s]
horses out of the road.”
Evitt allegedly threw a phone at a child and fought his roommate
with a knife. He then started throwing the victim’s belongings out of
the house.
When the officer approached Evitt to place him under arrest, the
man took off running. “About 5 to 10 minutes later,” police found
Evitt and brought him back to the location. After he was placed in
handcuffs, he started resisting and kicking an officer in the chest.
Evitt also started yelling and cussing. At one point, he said, “F---
you bitch ass police,” and continued to kick and spit at an officer.
When police put him in the police car, he threatened to kill the officer’s family and the victim’s family.
Evitt is being charged with assault and battery on police officer,
prisoner placing bodily fluid on police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon and threaten to perform act of violence. He is being held
without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 30, 2015.

A Welch man admitted to starting a fire at his mom’s house on
June 28 when he dropped a cigarette. 39-year-old James Lee Betts
was arrested June 28, because he was also very intoxicated when the
fire occurred, and he tried to fight some officers.
According to the police report, Craig County deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of E. Fifth Street shortly after 8 a.m. for a
residential fire. One of the deputies secured the area to keep people
out of it until the fire marshall inspected it. He told Betts he couldn’t
go in the house, but at some point, he saw Betts walk out the front
door.
When the deputy went to inspect the house, he noticed the front
door was broken and the kitchen was a mess. Betts blamed it on the
fire department.
The man had a bottle of alcohol in his hand as if using it as a weapon and asked the deputy
if he wanted to fight. The man was definitely intoxicated and he was having a hard time
standing up on his own.
When a deputy asked him how much he had had to drink, he replied, “Way too much I
guess.”
A deputy went to temporarily put the man’s hands behind his back, but Betts resisted and
tried to fight the deputy. He was eventually placed in handcuffs.
One of the homeowners (Betts’s mom) told police when she came home, she found food all
over the floor. When she asked Betts what happened, he told her the fire department made
the mess.
Another man at the residence told police Betts told him he had burnt the house down by
drinking and smoking. The man said he and his daughter removed the frozen food from the
freezer -- there was no food on the floor when they were in the kitchen. He said Betts had
been drinking nonstop since the day before.
A firefighter told the deputy they entered the house by opening the front and back doors
with no forced entry. After the fire was put out, Betts said he accidentally started the fire by
dropping a cigarette.
Betts is being charged with obstructing an officer, trespassing after being forbidden and
public intoxication. He was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court
on July 8, 2015.
