TOOL TIME
A 35-year-old woman is in jail after she allegedly stole automotive tools and a racing
engine from a property north of Tahlequah.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s
Department, the reporting party reached out
to a deputy on September 14 to report that
some automotive tools and a racing engine
had been stolen.
The loss of the items totaled $125,000. The
reporting party gave the deputy surveillance
video of the theft.
While reviewing the video, an investigator identified the suspect as Ashley Rutter.
He found the woman in Mayes County and
asked her about the alleged burglary and
theft of the items.
Rutter admitted to the investigator that she was responsible for the burglary
and theft. Together, they went to a storage unit in Coweta where Rutter was
keeping the stolen items. The investigator and detectives with the Coweta
Police Department found the stolen tools and racing engine.
Rutter was placed under arrest and transported to jail.
The stolen items recovered from the storage unit were returned to the owners.
Rutter is being charged with burglary in the second degree and grand larceny. Her bond was set at $20,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court
on October 19, 2021.

BATTIEST PLEADS GUILTY IN FEDERAL
COURT TO 1984 MURDER CHARGE
Melvin James Battiest, 60, entered a guilty
plea to one count of Felony Murder in Indian
Country, punishable by a term of imprisonment of not more than life, a fine of $250,000,
and a term of supervised release of not less
than five years.
The Indictment alleged that on or about April
23, 1984, deputies of the Wagoner County
Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a
body that was found in the Wahoo Bay in the
Fort Gibson Lake area. An autopsy revealed
that the person found, Donald Cantrell, died
of blunt force trauma to the head and chest.
During a subsequent investigation, Battiest
admitted that he and another man robbed
and murdered Mr. Cantrell at Wahoo Bay and stole his truck and burned
it. Battiest took detectives to the crime scene and showed them where everything took place.
The charges arose from an investigation by the Wagoner County Sheriff’s
Office, the Muskogee Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The Honorable Timothy D. Degiusti, U.S. District Judge in the United States
District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma, accepted the plea and
ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Conway represented the United States.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is renewing a $5,000 reward for
information that leads to the identification of
a suspect in the murder of 30-year-old Jennifer Jesse. On March 11, 2020, Jesse was
found deceased by Union City police officers.
A passerby called 9-1-1 after discovering her

was positively identified on March 13, 2020.
The medical examiner determined she had
been shot multiple times.
On March 30, 2020, the OSBI released
photographs of a man that is believed to have
information that will assist agents with the investigation. The pictures were taken at the
Braum’s located at 7025 S. Western Ave., in
Oklahoma City at around 9:13 p.m. on March
2, 2020. The race of the man in the photographs is unknown. He is wearing distinctive

shoelaces. He is believed to be wearing some
kind of bandana or head covering. Agents still
want to speak to this man.

Shylow Shane Young, 37, entered a guilty
plea to one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in
Indian Country. The crime is punishable by a
term of imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine
of $250,000, a term of supervised release of
not more than three years, and a special assessment in the amount of $100, and to one
count of Use, Carry, Brandish, and Discharge
of a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime

The Indictment alleged that on or about September 5, 2020, officers of
the Sallisaw Police Department responded to a trespass call at a horse barn
in Sallisaw, where they discovered Young and repeatedly instructed him to

under arrest. During the arrest Young began physically resisting arrest and
engaged in an extended physical confrontation, during which, Young grabbed
one of the officer’s firearms and discharged a round which travelled through
the officer’s holster and caused bodily injury to an assisting officer after ricocheting off the ground.
The charges arose from an investigation by the Sallisaw Police Department
and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The Honorable Kimberley West, U.S. Magistrate Judge in the United States
District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, in Muskogee, accepted
the plea and ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report.

AROUND THE STATE
SHOOTING ARREST -- Man arrested after
shooting his neighbor.
Around 3:15 p.m. on October 12, officers
got called out to a shooting near 4300 N. Iroquois Ave. A woman called police saying her
neighbor shot her 23-year-old grandson.
The victim told officers he went to the
neighbor’s house to talk to him about WIFI.
After knocking on the door twice, the victim
says Edward Deonta White fired several gunshots through the window, hitting the victim
once in the shoulder.
The victim was taken to the hospital and is
expected to be okay.
Officers setup a perimeter around the
house. After 30 minutes of announcements without a response, the Special
Operations Team was activated. Officers also talked with a family relative who
identified White and provided additional information.
After several hours of making announcements, the SOT team made entry in
the house and found White had escaped.
Officers then received information that Edward White was spotted at several
area convenience stores. Eventually, Edward White was caught at a Walmart
fighting with deputies.
Edward White was arrested for:
Shooting with Intent to Kill AFCF (After Former Conviction of a Felony)
Possession of a Firearm AFCF
Drug Possession AFCF
*This is a previous mugshot of White. He was being combative and uncooperative at the jail.

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty MUSKOGEE COUNTY 17 | NOVEMBER 2021
When a woman wouldn’t give 60-year-old
John Edward Fee some cash, he made everyone
around him pay the price by exposing his butt and
genitals to them.
That’s a fee no one wants to pay!
According to the police report, the Muskogee
man asked a woman for money at approximately
9:51 p.m. on September 23 in the 100 block of
South 32nd. He then demanded money from the
woman and threatened to assault her if she didn’t
hand over some cash.
When a Muskogee officer arrived at the location
to see what was going on, Fee exposed his “genitals and buttocks” to some poor people traveling
along a busy highway and pulling into the parking lot.
Needless to say, the officer noticed that Fee seemed intoxicated.
Fee is being charged with indecent exposure and robbery in the second
degree. His bond was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in
court on October 13, 2021.
