Oklahoma Highway Patrol
Today, I’m going to discuss who has the
biggest impact on our new drivers that hit the
road each and every day. First, the Oklahoma
Driver’s Education classes and schools across the state are second to none, and
do a fantastic job of educating our young drivers on the law, and proper way to
safely operate a motor vehicle. I would like to point to some other folks, who I
believe have a far greater impact on how our youngsters approach driving, and
address them, and that is the adults who these young drivers look up to: the
parents, older siblings, and extended family.
If you fit in this category, please pay attention. I believe that our kids learn their
driving behavior not from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, other law enforcement,
or driver’s education instructor, but from you, the parents and family. I know I
learned that way! Let me give you some examples.
You are a dad, and for whatever reason, when you are driving in town, or on a
county road, you just don’t buckle up. Maybe its because you don’t drive fast in
these areas, or have a farm tag and just don’t have to; however, you do buckle up
when you get on highways or go on long drives. The message you are sending is
that when you are in the vehicle there are certain times that it is ok not to wear
your seat belt. If dad doesn’t have to do it, I don’t either! In fact, at least 50% of
all accidents happen on county roads, and you are more likely to be in an accident
within 10 miles of your residence than otherwise. So the real message you are
sending is, don’t buckle up during the times that you are most likely to need it!
Next, mom gets off work at 5:00, and one of the kids has a ball game in another
town at 5:30. She can get there if she speeds. After all, it is important to get to
those activities, and it won’t hurt to push the speed just a little. The message you
send to your kids is, its ok to speed, as long as you can justify it! The facts are that
unsafe speeds kill more young people 16 to 25 than any other single thing! The
message here needs to be that its ok to slow down and show up a few minutes
late.....it is much better than the alternative, which is never showing up at all
because you’ve been involved in an accident.
Please remember, when you are driving, you are setting the example
for someone....and they are watching you all the time. What message are
you sending? I hope it’s the one that says, I’ll lead by example because I
love you, and want to do my part to keep you safe! Thanks for reading,

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money or
favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting
offi cer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.

Deaths in crashes involving
drunk drivers with a blood
alcohol concentration (BAC)
of .08+ dropped in 2010, but
despite this decrease, there
were still 10,228 lives lost
– that’s one person every 51
minutes. That makes it everyone's problem.
It seems that many people
were doing their part to put
a stop to this completely preventable epidemic. Alcohol-related traffic fatalities reached a low point in the late
1990s. Research also indicates that 62% of Americans exposed to the now-iconic Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk campaign have personally intervened to
stop someone from driving drunk, no doubt saving countless lives.
However, since the late 90's, alcohol-related driving deaths have been steadily
increasing. It seems that though the campaign was very successful, it did not
change the behavior of many potential impaired drivers. Many thought the messages to be targeted at overtly drunk drivers, and not them. When decision time
came, they would consider themselves merely "buzzed" and get behind the wheel.
The new PSAs created to address this gap were released in December 2005 with
the objective to inspire dialogue and recognition of the dangers of "buzzed" driving and subsequently, to motivate people to stop driving buzzed. The next installment expands on this message, equating buzzed driving and drunk driving and
demonstrating the devastating consequences that can occur as a result of buzzed
driving. The overall campaign hopes to educate people that consuming even a few
drinks can impair driving and that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.

sentenced to 3 years of probation
for Providing contraband in prison.
The charge is a result of an investigation by the Muskogee
County Sheriff’s Department and
the United States Marshal Service.
Benally-Samwas indicted in
June, 2015 and pled guilty in July, 2015.
The Indictment alleged that on or about February 5, 2015,
Benally-Sam, did knowingly and intentionally attempt to
provide marijuana, to an inmate in a prison.

When Jack Harwell was sheriff of McLennan County, folks
affectionately referred to the county jail as the “Harwell Hilton.”
Saturday morning, a drunken Oklahoma Sooners fan who
thought he was at the Waco Hilton but instead was found
sleeping in the McLennan County Courthouse got to spend
the rest of the day at the “Harwell Hilton,” deputies said.
Deputies responding to a burglar alarm at the courthouse
about 8:15 a.m. Saturday found Harold Anthony Schroeder,
35, of Oklahoma City, curled up between the counsel rail and
the first-row seats in the 54th State District Courtroom.
Wearing a crimson Oklahoma Sooners shirt, a groggy Schroeder sat on a bench
in the courthouse rotunda and tried to explain to deputies that he thought he was
at the Hilton.
Deputies noted in reports that Schroeder smelled strongly of alcohol.
Deputies arrested Schroeder on a Class B misdemeanor criminal trespass
charge, and he was released from the county jail about 2:15 p.m. Saturday after
posting $1,000 bond.
It was unclear Monday whether Schroeder made it to Saturday night’s BaylorOklahoma game at McLane Stadium.
McLennan County Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Smith said courthouse videos show
Schroeder entering the second floor of the courthouse through the Washington
Avenue entrance after climbing the steep, limestone stairs.
Smith said investigators are unsure how he got into the building but think it is
possible that the slide lock on the door was not engaged properly and the door
opened when Schroeder gave it a shove or two.
Smith said Schroeder was not charged with burglary of a building because his
intent was not to steal anything — he was just looking for a place to sleep. He told
deputies he didn’t know how he ended up in a third-floor courtroom, Smith said.
A courthouse employee who asked not to be identified said she entered the
building from the North Fifth Street side Saturday morning and heard the alarm
sounding.
Deputies asked her to leave while they searched the building, but she said she
heard Schroeder say he and his friends had been drinking at a downtown bar and
he left, thinking he was walking to the Hilton.
She said his friends told courthouse officials that they looked for him when he
didn’t make it back to the Hilton.

A Siloam Springs, Arkansas, man allegedly stole a truck from a Colcord casino after
bartenders cut him off from drinking.
Luis Carlos Ortiz, 28, was later found just chillin’ in the stolen vehicle on the side of the
road.
According to the police report, a West Siloam Springs police officer was dispatched to
the casino shortly after 2 a.m. on November 15 to investigate the incident. Two men told
him they drove their employer’s truck to the casino around 1:44 a.m. They parked it in the
valet area and went inside the building in hope of getting lucky.
Well, they didn’t. During their gambling excursion, the truck went missing.
A casino employee told the officer he saw the suspect take the truck from the parking
lot. He said the suspect had been cut off from drinking earlier that night and went to a
room at the casino hotel.
When the officer went to the man’s hotel room, no one came to the door. A little bit
later, the officer called the room. A woman answered, and she said the man they were
looking for was named Ortiz. She said they had been talking for a few days through text.
The woman wasn’t sure where her texting buddy was.
The officer left the casino, but it wasn’t long before police found the missing truck. Another officer saw the truck sitting on the side of the road on Old Highway 68. Ortiz was still
inside the stolen vehicle. The officer placed him under arrest and transported him to jail.
Ortiz is being charged with larceny of automobile. His bond was set at $2,000, and a
warrant was issued for his arrest on November 16, 2015.

Vinita woman Jammie Jeane Selman, 38, was arrested during a
traffic stop on November 12 after police found weed in a vehicle and
down her friend’s pants.
According to the affidavit, a state trooper stopped a vehicle for
speeding through Vinita at approximately 6:55 p.m. The trooper
checked the occupants’ information, and he discovered that one of
the passengers, identified as Selman, had warrants out of Ottawa
County.
Another officer arrived to assist, and he saw Selman trying to reach
behind her between the seat cushion. When he told her to stop, he
saw a baggy containing a green leafy substance. He asked her where
the rest of the marijuana was.
She at first replied, “What marijuana?” She then told him that she was sitting on some more
baggies and some scales.
The trooper placed her under arrest for her warrants. He asked the front passenger to step
out of the car also, and the officers searched the vehicle. They found clear baggies, two scales
with a green leafy residue and a green leafy substance scattered in the backseat.
The other passenger told an officer that Selman gave her a bag of marijuana during the traffic stop and told her to hide it. So, the woman shoved it down her pants. She handed the bag
containing a block of a green leafy substance over to police.
Selman was transported to jail.
Selman is being charged with distribution of controlled dangerous substance including
possession with intent to distribute. Her bond was set at $10,000.

A Joplin, Missouri, man was arrested at a Quapaw casino after he told police a bag containing
drugs and paraphernalia was his. After he found out
what was in the bag, he changed his story.
According to the police report, a Quapaw Tribal
Marshal deputy was dispatched to a local casino on
November 15 due to an abandoned bag that contained drugs and paraphernalia. The security supervisor told him that a man said the bag was his.
When the deputy looked in the bag, he saw a glass
smoking pipe and a baggy containing a crystalline
substance -- both tested positive for methamphetamine. The deputy also found a set of scales, a lighter, a metal grinder, a pipe with residue and a metal
container with “leafy substance” residue inside.
The man who wanted to claim the bag was identified as 57-year-old Larry Darnell Saddler. Since there was no identification in the bag, the deputy waited until
surveillance could verify the man had previously had the bag. Sure enough, surveillance unearthed a video of Saddler walking around with the bag.
At one point, he sat down at a machine and started gambling. A few minutes
later, he walked away, leaving the bag at the machine. Since it appeared that the
bag and its contents belonged to Saddler, the deputy placed him under arrest.
Saddler said he didn’t know that the paraphernalia was in the bag. He said he
wouldn’t have claimed it if he did.
Saddler is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance
and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $3,000, and
he was scheduled to appear in court on November 17, 2015.
