Well, the temperatures are dropping, and
fall is almost here, and these things signal the
start of football season in Oklahoma! Not only
have our major colleges had their first home games, but all across the state,
people are traveling to and from football games from 4th graders on up to high
school. With that in mind, here are a few tips to make this football season safe.
Lets start with college. Whether you are a Sooner, Cowboy, or Golden
Hurricane fan, one thing is for sure...you aren’t alone! There are thousands
of fans for each home game traveling to the stadiums. This volume of traffic
demands your consideration. First, if you can, leave early! The closer to game
time, the worse the traffic gets, so if you can, get to the stadium early. There are
plenty of things on a game day that are going on prior to kickoff that you can
spend your time enjoying. There are usually lots of free stuff for the kids to do
that make the whole game day experience wonderful for them as well.
Second, be patient! You WILL run into traffic, so plan ahead, and don’t get
frustrated with it. Turn on the radio, listen to the pre-game hype, and remember
to be a safe, courteous driver. Getting frustrated, and getting into a hurry, can
result in a traffic accident that will delay your arrival, and could end up being
very expensive, not to mention the potential for injury.
Last, be aware that there are usually some temporary traffic control changes
on game days. Both before and after the games, law enforcement will be at
intersections controlling the traffic lights, and making adjustments to keep the
traffic flowing in the best possible manner. Be alert and aware, and recognize
when and where these temporary traffic controls are taking place!
Now, on to the local games! The biggest thing I remember from growing up is
that parents are usually running late to get to games, because of what time they
got off work. This has not changed... we Troopers are stopping folks who are
speeding trying to get to a kid’s ball game all the time. While we understand, (we
have kids too!) we also see all too often what happens when accidents happen as
a result of unsafe speed. If you get stopped by us, you’re going to be even later,
and possibly on the hook for a hefty fine. If you get involved in an accident, you
may not make the game at all.
Finally, when you do get there, be a good fan! Cheer your team, don’t denigrate
the other team. Use appropriate language in the stands; remember, there are
kids of all ages in the stands with you.
We Oklahomans love our football, just remember to show your support in a
positive way!
Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

A Sallisaw woman was shocked an officer found three lighters in
her vehicle after he searched it due to her arrest. She told him she
needed to clean her car better.
According to the affidavit, a Sallisaw officer was northbound on
Maple Street when he saw a southbound vehicle cross into his lane of
traffic. The vehicle stopped at a gas station, so the officer pulled into
the parking lot behind it.
A woman exited the vehicle and the officer asked for her license
and insurance. He noticed her movements were very jerky and almost “uncontrollable” at times. He asked her if she had been drinking -- she told him she never drinks.
The woman was identified as 46-year-old Tamera Lee Hendrix.
Another officer arrived to administer sobriety tests. When the tests were over, he
concluded Hendrix was under the influence of some kind of narcotic and she was
placed under arrest.
While conducting an inventory of the woman’s car, the officer found a small piece
of tissue containing a powder substance that later tested positive for meth, a smoking
device with burnt residue, a lighter, a cylinder containing a green leafy substance that
tested positive for marijuana and two more smoking devices.
On the way to jail, Hendrix asked the officer if he found the “cigarette lighter” like
the old push button lighters in old vehicles.
According to the affidavit, she was referring to smoking devices designed to resemble old lighters, but they’re now called “one hitters.” When the officer told her he
found all three, she replied, “Three! I lost those -- guess I should clean my car better!”
Hendrix is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance, driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs and unlawful possession of
drug paraphernalia. She was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in
court on September 23, 2015.

UTTERING A FORGED
INSTRUMENT
A Broken Arrow man with a penchant for playing with guns
learned his lesson when he accidentally shot his girlfriend with
a .22 caliber rifle on September 9.
20-year-old Garth Oliver Warkentin said he was cleaning
the gun; his girlfriend said he was just playing with it like he
always does.
A Catoosa officer was dispatched to the 16300 block of E.
Newton Place shortly after 3 p.m. to investigate the shooting.
When he arrived, he saw a man later identified as Warkentin
standing over a woman who was sitting in a chair. Warkentin had blood all over
his hands, and the woman had blood on her body from the neck down.
The officer asked Warkentin where the shooter was. Warkentin told the officer
he was the shooter, but he shot her by accident.
An ambulance arrived to take the woman to the hospital. Before she left, she
told the officer she was sitting with Warkentin in the living room. She said, “Garth
was being Garth by playing with a rifle when the gun went off and hit me in the
shoulder.”
The victim said it was an accident -- Warkentin always had a gun out and was
playing with it.
The officer asked her if her man was cleaning the gun when it went off -- she
said no.
Warkentin told a different story. He said he was cleaning his rifle in the living
room while he was watching TV. He said he heard a noise, so he stood up and
turned around to see what the noise was. When he turned, the gun went off and a
bullet hit his girlfriend in the shoulder. Warkentin said he grabbed his girlfriend
and ran to the neighbor’s house to call for help.
Warkentin is being charged with reckless conduct with firearm. His bond was
set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on September 24, 2015.

30-year-old Amanda Dawn Locke told an officer she hadn’t
been drinking after she crashed and rolled her truck. Well, not
that day anyway. The Jay woman blamed it on the rum she
consumed the day before.
On September 8, a state trooper was dispatched to a single vehicle injury accident on SH 20 south of Southwest City
shortly after 4 p.m. When he arrived, he saw a truck that had
rolled about 11 feet east of the highway. He was advised the
driver refused medical treatment.
Locke told the officer she was going too fast and lost control driving around
the corner, so she slammed on her brakes and ran off the road, rolling her truck.
While she was talking, the trooper noticed her speech was slurred, her movements were slow, and she had bloodshot watery eyes.
The trooper asked her for her license. One of Locke’s friends retrieved it from
her wrecked truck, but, it was just an ID card. Locke told the trooper she didn’t
have a valid license.
While checking her information, the trooper was advised Locke had felony
warrants out of Delaware County. He asked the woman to have a seat in his patrol car.
When they sat down in the car, the trooper could smell an “overwhelmingly”
strong odor of alcohol. He asked Locke if she had been drinking.
According to the police report, she told him she hadn’t been drinking that day,
just the previous evening. He asked her how much she had consumed the night
before. Locke said she drank rum all day.
The trooper was unable to administer standard field sobriety tests because
Locke said her leg was hurting.
A preliminary breath test revealed her level was 0.32, four times the legal limit.
Locke is being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving
with license canceled/suspended/revoked. She is scheduled to appear in court on
September 18, 2015.

A Wagoner man who had a little too much to drink before getting into his car
was stopped by officers after a concerned citizen said he was acting suspicious.
39-year-old John Vunetich was arrested for a DUI and open container during
the September 6 traffic stop.
According to the police report, a Wagoner officer was advised a suspicious vehicle was traveling south on North Gertrude Avenue around 7:58 p.m. Dispatch
said the vehicle had picked up two younger males carrying guns and left at a high
rate of speed. The reporting party thought the trio might be poachers, and he was
following them until police arrived.
The officer located the suspect vehicle near NE First and Gertrude Avenue. He
watched as the vehicle pulled up to a stop sign without a turn signal on.
The officer stopped the vehicle at Harrill Avenue and Cherokee Street. He asked the driver, Vunetich,
if there were guns in the vehicle. He told the officer yes, they were in the trunk. The officer asked if they
were out hunting. Vunetich said the two juvenile males in his vehicle were his nephews, and he had just
picked them up from dove hunting.
When the officer asked him for his driver’s license, Vunetich said he didn’t have one, because it was
suspended for no insurance.
While they were talking, the officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol. Vunetich admitted to drinking about “6 beers or so” throughout the evening.
The officer asked him to step out of the vehicle for sobriety tests. During the tests, Vunetich said, “I’m
done. Just do what you got to do.”
The officer placed him under arrest. In the man’s vehicle, police found an open, cold can of beer in
the door panel.
During booking, the officer discovered Vunetich had two outstanding city warrants.
Vunetich is being charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, driving
with license canceled/suspended/revoked, transporting opened container of beer and failure to signal
on turning. He was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 14, 2015.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money or
favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting
offi cer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

Miami man Jordan Douglas Owens, 18, just had one
question for officers when they asked him about his involvement in a recent theft: “What’s the bond for burglary?”
On September 9, a Miami officer took a burglary report
at a residence in the 1000 block of K Street. The victim
told him someone broke into her home and stole a Wii
gaming system, a laptop, cash, a PS3 gaming system, and
numerous PS3 games.
According to the affidavit, officers were dispatched to
a residence on H St. NW shortly after 1 a.m. on September 10 to speak with the victim again. She said a juvenile
male had messaged a juvenile female at that residence about the stolen property
and was advised she had a Wii and laptop for sale.
The female’s boyfriend was Owens.
Police entered the residence and found Owens sleeping. The homeowners allowed police to search their residence for stolen property. During this time, Owens asked some officers what the bond was for burglary. Knowing they had him
caught, an officer asked Owens where the stolen property was. He pointed to a
black backpack leaning up against the wall. Inside the backpack was a Wii gaming
console, a laptop, accessory cords for both and a Wii controller.
Owens was detained and placed in the patrol car. He admitted to an officer that
he knew the property was stolen and it belonged to the victim. A friend asked him
to sell it, but he wouldn’t tell the officer his friend’s name. He said he was going to
sell the stuff for $100, and he would get $20 in return.
Owens denied actually taking the stuff from the victim’s residence. He said the
only property he received was the property officers recovered -- he didn’t know
about the other stuff.
Owens is being charged with possession of stolen property. His bond was set at
$5,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on October 7, 2015.
What’s the bond for burglary?
