Of course, you will probably go to
jail, and an 18-year-old Stratford man
did just that and was arrested for growing marijuana in his backyard. Apparently, he couldn’t afford to buy marijuana, so he thought it would be a good
idea to grow his own.
On July 30, the owner of some apartments in the 600 block of East Murray
told a Stratford police officer that he
had seen something the officer would
be interested in, the affidavit states.
When the officer arrived, the property manager showed him ten plants
that appeared to be marijuana growing
in the backyard of an apartment.
The officer obtained a search warrant and returned to the residence at approximately 8:47 p.m.
A woman who lived at the residence told police the plants belonged to her son, Mikell Dewayne Emery Bettes. She added that she
had planned to throw the plants away, but hadn’t yet. She said Bettes
started growing the plants from seeds a month prior.
Bettes arrived at the residence, and he admitted that the plants
were his. He explained that he planted the seeds because he couldn’t
afford to buy marijuana.
The officer told him he was going to search the residence, and
asked if there was anything he should know about. Bettes told him
there were some leaves in his room drying out, and there were several pipes in the room also.
The officer found nine smoking devices, seeds, and a green leafy
substance in Bettes’s room.
Bettes is being charged with cultivation of controlled substance
and possession of a controlled dangerous substance without tax
stamp affixed. He was released on a $6,000 bond and is scheduled
to appear in court on September 12, 2014.

After Purcell woman Heather Kelley Fletcher, 43, was
accused of leaving a store stealing a pair of jeans, she told
police she was too fat to wear the shorts employees said
she walked in the store wearing.
According to the affidavit, a Purcell police officer was
dispatched to the 1600 block of N. Green Avenue on August 3 at approximately 3:24 p.m. Employees said that
Fletcher had switched her shorts for a pair of jeans in the
dressing room and walked out after an employee tried to
stop her. They explained that she walked into the dressing room carrying two pairs of jeans and wearing white
and plaid shorts. When she exited the dressing room, she
walked toward the door wearing a pair of jeans.
When he arrived, an employee pointed at a woman leaving a nearby store and said, “That’s her.”
He approached Fletcher. Before he could ask any questions, she told him she didn’t
know the employee and she doesn’t wear shorts because she is too fat. Fletcher appeared to be wearing a new pair of jeans.
When he asked Fletcher when she got the jeans, she told him she bought them the
day before for her birthday. The officer asked her where she put her shorts; she again
told him that she doesn’t wear shorts because she’s too fat. When he told her employees
saw her wearing shorts before she went into the dressing room, she still denied that she
stole the jeans.
The officer placed her under arrest. During a search of her purse, he found a pair of
shorts matching the description of the ones employees said she wore into the dressing
room. He also found a double-edge dagger, a tube with residue that field-tested positive
for methamphetamine and a plastic baggy.
Fletcher is being charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, larceny of merchandise from retailer, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying weapons. She was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court
on September 10, 2014.

charges are punishable by not more than 5 years imprisonment
and/or up to a $250,000 fine, and punishable by not less than

The second man, Richard Paul Geurin, 66, faces charges of

The Indictment alleges that from on or about February 3,

with, First Bank & Trust of Duncan, Oklahoma, a bank whose

in that the defendant withdrew cash from the accounts of certain bank customers and misapplied, embezzled, abstracted and purloined the funds for his own use or benefit with the
intent to deceive an officer of First Bank & Trust of Duncan. The Indictment further alleges
that Geurin knowingly made false entries in the books, reports, or statements of First Bank
& Trust of Duncan, in that Geurin created false transaction documents showing customers
withdrawing cash from customer accounts, when in truth and in fact, as the defendant well
knew, the withdrawals from customer accounts were by, and for the benefit of the defendant.
Geurin pled not guilty to the charges on August 20.
The charges arose from an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The charges are punishable by not more than 30 years imprisonment and/or up to $1,000,000 fine.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children,
taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children
receive public assistance and their parents pay no child support,
all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

Return to the scene of
the crime… for lunch
An alleged serial burglar’s craving
for El Pollo Loco appears to have
done him in.
Daniel Warn, 28, was caught on
security video in the early morning
hours of July 16 going through the
drive-thru window at the fast food
restaurant in Costa Mesa, Calf.
Video allegedly showed him
ransacking the eatery, but he failed
to find any money.
Later that day, police say Warn, of
Bloomington, returned to the El Pollo Local to order food wearing
the same distinctive hat and bright green shirt.
“Shortly before noon on July 16, employees at the El Pollo Loco
contacted Costa Mesa Police reporting that a subject matching the
description of the suspect seen on the store video was back at the
restaurant, in line to order food,” authorities said.
Warn was arrested at the restaurant.
He is also a suspect in several other commercial burglaries in the
south Costa Mesa area that occurred earlier in the week.
Warn, who has a criminal arrest record, was out of jail as part of
California’s Realignment program.
He is being held at the Orange County Jail on $35,000 bail.

What you’re saying about this on...
Brian G: Legalize steroids, same amount of deaths as weed and steroids won’t make
you sound like a half asleep pothead
Toni L: Brian maybe you need to do some research steroids do hurt and kill people.
They have very dangerous side effects unlike weed.
Brandi W: I think it really wouldn’t matter which drugs are legalized or not, people
will find a way to abuse, take, sell, make or even trade drugs if they want to! I for one don’t
think I’m in charge of anybody else’s actions or wants.. I say to each their own just don’t
bring others down for your own actions! Be responsible..
Becky P: they use to use it for medical reasons in the old days...legalize it and get the
tax from it...steroids will kill you eventually...go after the meth heads
Brandon H: Legalize bud it never hurt a soul
Jon W: Legalize weed
Sha’Meka M: Steroids can kill you n make you do things ... Legalize Mary Jane..
She’s cool ppl
Gary H: Maybe synthetic weed. Steroids claimed a whole family in Chris Benoit’s
case. If you don’t mind disappearing testicles and the end to your sex life, enjoy......
Andrea G: They gotta get to Rehab, But they say No No No!
Mike B: Tighten control of Prescription drugs . They cause more problems.
Jason H: Free the weed. !!! Unburden the prison industrial complex
Tamara T: Concentrate on where the drugs are coming from. I know in Garvin Co a
lot of the same people that were dealing 18 years ago when I was in high school are still the
main dealers around. Quit making deals with them.
Mallori D: Marijuana should be legalized. Others drugs like cocaine or meth should
not be. I don’t agree with throwing these people in jail and them serving time longer than
people who have killed/rape. These people should be given help. There a lot of people who
use marijuana and don’t go out and kill, rob or lose their job because of it. It’s time the baby
boomers start letting my generation make these choices. It will happen eventually.
Renee M: You get more time for marijuana than drunk driving or being a cook or
tweek. A little backwards. Oh yeah and all because they thought they could win the war on
drugs. Which will never happen..
Alissa W: I have Fibromyalgia. We have very low options to control our pain. It just
so happens marijuana does great things for our pain, and coming off of it is a lot easier
than coming off of narcotics where it all of a sudden wears off and you are in more pain
than before. I think medical marijuana would do great things in our state. Also I think that
if you are a first time offender of drugs and alcohol you should go to involuntary rehab. If
you have kids you shouldn’t get “special treatment” by no means. I believe narcotics and
meth and heroine are more of an issue than pot. Narcotics cause more harm to yourself
and others.
Merrenda L: Colorado is a debt free state and has been. No one has broke out and
caused riots and crime has actually went down. When it comes to pot, make it legal and
follow colorado. Get our state debt free and tax the hell out of it. Use the money for schools
and roads.
Molly E: There is a definite drug problem in Oklahoma, but I believe incarceration is
not the only solution. Jail time will punish drug users/abusers, but it will NOT address the
underlying problem. As soon as they are released, they will go right back to using. We need
to invest more in rehabilitation than punishment. Addiction should be treated as an illness,
not a crime. These people are mothers, fathers, siblings, friends. They’re not monsters because they lost control. They just need help.
David T: Legalize marijuana it hasn’t killed anybody unlike prescription drugs, meth,
alcohol, or any other man made drugs. They need to be more strict on these meth heads
and drunks who take ppls lives on a daily basis instead of a slap on the wrist and send them
on their way. I’ve had to many family members and friends killed by a drunk driver or
somebody under the influence of meth
Lisa H: There are many benefits to making pot legal. Not only for medicinal issues,
but tax dollars added in to our economy as well. No, the judicial system has been messed
up for years. People caught with pot get more time than kiddy rapists! No one comes out of
the womb saying they want to become an addict. Meth has destroyed millions of lives. But
until we as a society, can accept the fact that some people are simply broken and looking
for a way to relieve their pain, drugs, alcohol, etc. will be abused. Send the first timers to
drug rehab. After that, jail time.
Jason S: Alcohol is already legal, now pot should be. Ive seen more problems though
through presciption drugs by far.
Maria E: Well unfair if the pot heads can have mary jane give the dope heads cocain
and ice ... get my point not fair to give some what they want and not others what they want..
if you legalize one legalize all. I’m against any including pain meds because ameicans have
learned to say there back hurts get oxy and instead of fixing the “problem” they claim to
have they keep popping there pills or better yet sell to the pill poppers and buy there weed,
meth ect..
Joel R: the biggest problem i see is corruption in the police and sheriff”s departments/
offices.
Dillen G: I’d say the problem isn’t the drugs. Now bear with me, I don’t condone the
use or cultivation of any drug. The PROBLEM, however, is these gun toting punk kids and
the wars they wage for the people who supply them. Did you know on the black market,
the “product” that flows the most, is laundry detergent. Something completely legal is being sold in underground markets just like these drugs. Why? Because the drugs aren’t the
problem, but they are contributing factors nonetheless. Legalizing won’t get rid of these
organizations underground. It may dampen them, and make it harder for them to make
money, but it won’t stop them. When you get down to brass tax, it’s lazy people trying to
make a paycheck. These “gangsters” are pawns for individuals who go unnoticed or unfound because of the loyalty these pawns have for them. They just reel in the cash.
Chuck C: Alcohol does need attention but again it’s effects are scientifically measurable and marijuana doesn’t since it has different levels THC but I’m sure that will change.
Preston S: That whole question as to whether they should be more lenient on women
than men, is just simple minded. An “abuser” is just that, an “abuser.” Whoever runs this
page, should probably have their questions examined by a panel of people before posting.
Okjailbirds: Preston S: It is Senate Bill 1278, so I guess the question was examined before we posted. Men are left out of this bill. http://www.oksenate.gov/.../press.../
pr20140312a.htm
Tucker W: Too many prescription drugs. Every time I go to a doctor they want to
fix it with a pill. What happened to curing something rather than masking the pain?????
Jesse C: As simple as we would like to make the solution to our state’s drug issues
sound, they are extremely complicated. No simple one liner answer will work. Drugs are
a temporary answer to a long term problem. Until we as a society decide to face the issues
instead of escape, we will have a drug issue, legal or illegal.
Here’s a question for you...
How do think the current drug problem in Oklahoma should be solved?
Things to ponder:
• Is there a drug problem at all?
• Do drugs need to be legalized? Which drugs?
• Do all drug abusers need to go to jail? What about recreational drug users?
• Do drug abusers/users need help instead of jail time? What about those who
don’t want help?
• Should judges be more lenient with women
and harsher on men? What about those who
have children (women and men)?
• Do you think our system is fair and just? If
not, what seems to be the problem?
Sorry we could not print all responses;
thanks to all who contributed.

Norman man Dylan Anthony Gibson, 22, was arrested after a police
officer saw him doing drug deals out
of his vehicle in the Moore Walmart
parking lot.
According to the affidavit, the
Moore officer was sitting in the parking lot on August 12, when he saw a
black vehicle drive into the lot. A
person entered the vehicle for a brief
moment, then exited. The black vehicle then drove away.
Recognizing the behavior as consistent with drug transactions, the
officer followed the vehicle, and
pulled over the subject for a defective tag lamp and an improper turn at SW 19th and Santa Fe. When
he made contact with the driver, identified as Gibson, the officer noticed a faint odor of raw marijuana. The officer asked Gibson if he
could search his vehicle. Gibson said, “Yeah.”
Inside the vehicle, the officer found a large Mason jar containing a
“substantial amount” of a green leafy substance. Next to the jar was
a digital scale.
The officer also found five pills he recognized as generic Xanax in
the glove box.
The green leafy substance field-tested positive for marijuana.
Gibson told the officer he had started selling marijuana three
weeks prior. He also agreed to let the officer look at his phone — the
officer found drug transaction texts.
Gibson is being charged with unlawful possession of controlled
drug with intent to distribute and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to
appear in court on August 26, 2014.

All over the state, kids are either
already back in school or about to
start, so what better time to talk
about bus and school zone safety? Everyone either has a child
starting, going back to school, or knows someone who does. We all
want to look out for the welfare of our young students, so I’ll touch
on a few items to refresh your memories about school zones and
school buses.
First, lets talk about school bus safety. One of the violations I
see most is drivers going the opposite direction not stopping for
a school bus that has its red flashers and stop sign out. I can
only assume that these drivers believe that those stop indicators
are only for the vehicles following the school bus, but this is not
true. Oklahoma State Statute Title 47-11-705 states:
The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking a school bus that is
stopped to take on or discharge school children, and on which the
red loading signals are in operation, is to stop the vehicle before
it reaches the school bus and not proceed until the loading signals
are deactivated and then proceed past such school bus at a speed
which is reasonable and with due caution for the safety of such
school children and other occupants.
An exception to this would be on a divided roadway where there
is a separation of the lanes of travel, such as a divided four-lane
highway. The drivers on the opposite side of the road do not have
to stop in this situation, but the drivers on the same side must stop
as stated. Again, this is only for highways that are divided by a
median, cable barrier, concrete barrier, etc. This is not applicable
for an undivided multi-lane highway. On that occasion, all traffic
must obey the bus loading signals.
Next, lets tackle the school zones. All a school zone does is reduce
the speed limit at certain times of the day. These times are when
there is a presence or potential presence of school children. What
this means is, just because you don’t see children out on the
playground, or outside the school building, does not mean the
school zone is not in effect, because the potential presence of
children is taken into account. The way a driver is notified of an
active school zone is with the flashing yellow lights attached to the
appropriate warning signs for the school zone. If a driver is cited
in a school zone, the fine doubles.
As safe and courteous drivers, we should always be looking out
for each other on the roadways, and a potential fine shouldn’t be
our motivation, but the safety of others as well as ourselves, and
especially for our youngsters. Remember, their safety is in your
hands; lets do our part to make this a safe and sound school
year. Thanks for reading, buckle up and please drive safe!

stupid criminals
A Phoenix man attempted to rob two large businesses, first
an Ace Hardware and then a Safeway. He put his hand under
his shirt to look like a gun, but the cashier was not fooled and
calmly said “no” to his request for money. Equally unsuccessful was his attempt to rob a Safeway, which resulted in him
being escorted out of the building. According to Phoenix New
Times, he waited a few minutes before returning into the store
to snag a small breakfast sausage and was therefore charged
with shoplifting. I guess all that failing worked up an appetite.
A man in Riverfront was busted for buying some heroin and
a prostitute for the night. Doesn’t sound that unusual, right?
He used money he had stolen from his 4 year old nephew’s piggy bank. According to River front Times, the man was staying
with his sister and asked if he could borrow some of her son’s
money. She told him he could have two dollars, but he took all
$500. I’m thinking next Thanksgiving dinner could be tense.
In Seattle, a young man and woman attempted to steal six
beers from a gas station. Malt-liquor (what?) beers, to be exact. The male accomplished this by hitting the store clerk over
the head with a ukulele, breaking the instrument and cutting
the victims scalp. According to Seattle Weekly, the suspects
had fled by the time the police arrived on the scene. Silently,
unfortunately.
A man in Chicago was feeling hungry, so he decided to rob a
Subway franchise. Of course, the plan wasn’t complete without
added complications. This one came in the form of a Halloween disguise—a ghost costume, to be exact. According to Huffington Post, he almost succeeded in holding up the restaurant,
until another employee threw hot soup at him. I didn’t even
know Subway offered that as a menu item, but thank goodness
they do.
If there’s one thing rarer than common sense, it’s common
courtesy. Luckily this guy at least has the latter. A man supposedly the age of thirty decided to rob a bank inside of Kroger (as
politely as possible). A security camera took an exceptionally
clear picture of him tipping his baseball cap to the teller who
was being “so kind as to help him rip off the place”. According to Houston Press, he was able to finish the robbery and
escape. But probably not before wishing everyone in line a
splendidly jolly day.
