A Lawton man who stole veteran grave markers from a tribal cemetery to sell for salvage will serve prison time.
Jason P. Paras, 34, was sentenced to serve four months in prison
for the theft of two grave markers from a Kiowa-Comanche-Apache
Intertribal Cemetery. Paras was charged on the federal court’s Indian country misdemeanor docket on September 20, 2012, and pled
guilty on October 18, 2012.
Paras admitted that in June of 2012 he stole several brass grave
markers from the Deyo Mission Cemetery, a Kiowa-ComancheApache Intertribal Cemetery located on Indian trust land west of
Lawton. The brass grave markers are furnished by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at no cost to the family for deceased military service members.
Paras admitted he stole the brass markers to sell to a recycling company in Lawton as scrap
metal. One of the grave markers was that of a Comanche Tribal member and “Comanche
Code Talker” from World War II who was admitted to the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame
in September of 2011.
The Comanche Code Talkers were part of a classified special unit of tribal members that
used coded messages in the Comanche language to evade detection by German forces during
World War II in Europe.
Another marker belonged to Comanche tribal member who was a Vietnam veteran. As part
of the sentence, Paras will be required to pay to replace the two markers he stole and sold as
scrap metal.

A former U.S. Army Captain was sentenced April 1 in Oklahoma
City to serve 23 months in prison for conspiracy to accept thousands
of dollars in gratuities from contractors during his deployment to
Baghdad, Iraq, according to Sanford C. Coats, U.S. Attorney for the
Western District of Oklahoma.
Sean Patrick O’Brien, 38, of Lawton, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Stephen P. Friot in the Western District of Oklahoma.
In addition to his prison term, O’Brien was sentenced to serve three
years of supervised release and ordered to pay $37,500 in restitution
to the United States.
O’Brien pleaded guilty on Nov. 9, 2012, to a criminal information
charging him with two counts of conspiracy to accept illegal gratuities.
According to court documents, O’Brien, formerly a commissioned
officer in the U.S. Army, assisted in the contracting process of U.S.
government funds, and was therefore considered a public official.
It is a violation of federal law for officers to accept gratuities from
contractors dependent upon them for contracts.
According to court documents, from mid-2008 through January
2009, O’Brien, with the assistance of two alleged co-conspirators,
unlawfully sought, received and accepted illegal gratuities for helping Iraqi contractors in connection with U.S. government. O’Brien
accepted approximately $37,500 in cash payments and jewelry while
stationed in Iraq, which he has repatriated to the United States. One
of the alleged co-conspirators also offered O’Brien a vacation to a
private island.

Julius Jones
On July 28, 1999, Paul Howell was fatally
shot in the driveway of his parents’ Edmond
home. Howell, his sister, and Howell’s two
young daughters had just returned from a
shopping trip in Howell’s Chevrolet Suburban.
Howell pulled into the driveway and turned
the engine off . As Howell’s sister exited the
front passenger side, she heard a gunshot. She
turned to see her brother slumped over the
driver’s seat, and a young black male, wearing
a white T-shirt, a stocking cap on his head, and bandana over
his face, demanding the keys to the vehicle. She then rushed to
get herself and Howell’s daughters out of the Suburban. As she
escorted the girls through the carport, she heard someone yelling
at her to stop, and then another gunshot. She got the girls inside
and called for help. Howell’s parents ran outside to fi nd their son
lying on the driveway. His vehicle was gone. Howell died a few
hours later from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Two days after the shooting, Oklahoma City police found
Howell’s Suburban parked near a convenience store on the
south side of town. The investigation led police to Jones’ parents’
Oklahoma City home.
After obtaining a warrant, police found a .25-caliber handgun,
wrapped in a red bandana, secreted in the attic through a hole
in a bedroom ceiling and found papers addressed to Jones in
the bedroom. Police also found a loaded, .25-caliber magazine,
hidden inside a wall-mounted door-chime housing. Further
investigation revealed that the bullet removed from Howell’s
head, and a bullet shot into the dashboard of the Suburban, were
fi red from the handgun found in the attic of the Jones home.
In 2002, a jury found Jones guilty of Howell’s murder and
recommended death. At his sentencing, the judge sentenced
Jones in accordance with the jury’s verdicts.

John 10:10: “The thief cometh not,
but for to steal, and to kill, and to
destroy: I am come that they might have
light, and that they might have it more
abundantly.”
The thief Jesus is referring to in
this scripture is Satan himself. The
Lord contrasts the work of the devil as
stealing, killing, and destroying, while
the work of the Lord is to bring abundant
life to His people. Notice that the thief
doesn’t stop at one sin of stealing, but
rather progresses on to kill and destroy.
Many people do not realize that what
they think as just taking seemingly little
things can lead to taking bigger things
and ultimately one becomes a thief. The
“little fox” of stealing towels from the
motel, shoplifting small items, keeping
things that do not belong to them, can
lead to a dangerous pattern which could
eventually lead to one being imprisoned for theft.
Shoplifting alone costs our businesses enormous amounts of money which
causes to have to pay higher prices for goods. When a nation stoops to thievery
in any form, it hurts all the people.
in recent news articles, we have seen how thievery on the national level has
jeopardized the safety of our whole country because of people stealing our
national secrets and selling them to our potential enemies. We pray for this
element of sin in our society to be removed.
We, as Christians, know this can only happen through the Lord changing men’s
hearts and giving them power over sin in their lives. We pray for revival in our
nation so that honor and honesty will prevail in our national life.
We must also check our own lives to see if we are failing God by yielding to
stealing and cheating.

A Cyril man and three others were arrested March 13 on complaints of attempted murder after police found the victim lying
in a yard with a gunshot wound to his leg.
John Raymond Moore, 38, was officially charged March 22
with felony assault and battery with a deadly weapon. Charges
were not filed against the three other men, Johnny Jones, 22, of
Lawton, Harley Batchaddle, 29, of Fletcher, and Carlton Bennett, 34, of Lawton.
Moore is accused of shooting Thomas Franklin, aka “T-Money”, in the leg, according to court documents. Moore told investigators his wife had called him saying T-Money was at his
home making threats against his daughter, who allegedly owned
T-Money some money. Moore also claimed T-Money told his
wife that she and he needed to pay their daughter’s debt. Moore
quickly went to their home and confronted T-Money. T-Money then drove off and he followed him to another residence. He confronted T-Money again, and when T-Money ran out
of the house, Moore said he shot into the ground next to T-Money and did not know he had
hit him.
Jones, Batchaddle, and Bennett were passengers in Moore’s car and told investigators they
did not know what Moore was doing.
At Moore’s preliminary hearing on March 20, his bond was reduced from $80,000 to
$10,000 for agreeing to wear a GPS monitor, and was released. He was also ordered back to
court May 24.

A Ft. Cobb man was taken into custody after an
observant neighbor saw him steal a TV from a residence.
Lance Parrish, 20, was charged March 25 with second-degree burglary in Caddo County District Court.
Caddo County Sheriff’s Deputy Spencer Davis was
called to the Crow’s Roost area of Ft. Cobb Lake on a
burglary in progress report. The caller had observed
two men come out of a house and put a TV in a bluish-green Taurus. One of the men got in the car and
the other got in a pickup truck and they both left, according to the police affidavit.
Two other officers stopped the car and Davis was
told the truck was parked at Dirty Ernie’s Salvage.
Davis asked the pickup’s driver, Parrish, for his license and discovered he had an outstanding warrant.
They then drove to where the other officers had the
other guy stopped and Parrish admitted to the burglary. He said he wanted the other
guy, identified as Clay Grose, to haul it for him and that Grose didn’t know it was
stolen.
Both men were hauled off to the Caddo County Jail and booked in on burglary
charges.

A former McLoud teacher who admitted to taking sexually
inappropriate photos of young girls, some her own students, wants a
judge to consider probation.
In a written letter submitted to the court, Kimberly Crain blamed
depression, menopause, a persuasive online love interest, an
emotionally absent husband and even hypnosis for her crime.
The former elementary school teacher detailed a timeline of events
that prompted her to plead guilty to manufacturing and distributing
child pornography and to lewd molestation. Crain makes an attempt
to reason with the court as to why she took sexually explicit snapshots
of girls in her class and then emailed or Skyped them to her online
love, Gary Doby, a professor living in Pennsylvania.
“I found myself giving in to all he wanted,” Crain said. “...I wanted to continue to keep him
happy.”
Crain eventually invited several girls to help her decorate her classroom before the 2011-12
school year. The students were invited to her house to eat pizza, and they were taped as they
changed clothes.
“I took some candid snapshots as they played and ate,” Crain wrote. She emailed those photos
to Doby.
