More than 100,000 children and youth in the U.S. foster care system are awaiting permanent families. National Adoption Month is
a time to raise awareness about the adoption of children and youth
from foster care.
The Children’s Bureau in partnership with AdoptUSKids and Child
Welfare Information Gateway sponsors the initiative each November as a way to focus public attention on the urgent need for adoptive
families for children and youth waiting in foster care for a permanent
family. This year’s focus, “Partnering for Permanency,” builds on the
social media theme from last year. A special web page on Information Gateway’s website helps child welfare professionals, prospective adoptive parents, and youth partner for permanency. The website contains resources, stories, and videos on topics such as getting
started with social media, how to build a recruitment campaign, and
how social media impacts child welfare and adoption. The website

A reckless driver nearly ran over a deputy as
she sped down a residential area on October
20. Altus woman Mandy Mercer, 31, tried to
explain to the deputy that she was just lost, but
he suspected something else.
According to the affidavit, the deputy was
walking inside his residence in the 800 block
of South Wichita Street around 11 p.m. when he
heard a loud, roaring engine approaching. He
looked down the road and saw some headlights
approaching at a fast speed. The driver failed to turn and drove off
the dead end, right into the deputy’s yard.
When the deputy approached the vehicle, he told the driver to
turn the vehicle off. Mercer apologized and told the deputy she was
leaving. The deputy identified himself and asked for her license. She
was talking rapidly and seemed to have a hard time with her motor
skills.
Mercer said she had just gotten off work at a Hobart bar and was
on her way home to Altus. When the deputy asked what she was doing in his neck of the woods, she told him she was lost. She denied
drinking and the deputy couldn’t smell any alcohol.
Mercer kept changing the topic of conversation and told the deputy how she and her boyfriend had just split. She told the deputy he
was “gangster” and mean, and she begged him to let her go.
Police found a bottle of pills that was filled on October 16 -- it was
empty. When asked if she had taken more medicine than prescribed,
Mercer kept rambling about how she had been in drug court. She
agreed to sobriety tests, but she couldn’t prove that she was sober.
She seemed to be confused and was unable to follow instructions.
Due to her terrible driving and inability to complete the tests, the
deputy placed Mercer under arrest.
Mercer is being charged with reckless driving and driving a motor
vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Her bond
was set at $1,500 and she is scheduled to appear in court on January 5, 2016.

Unfortunately for her, she was stopped for speeding and a state trooper found the items. According to the affidavit, a trooper stopped Linker at approximately 7:48 p.m. after he clocked her vehicle traveling 93 mph in a 75 mph zone down I-44. She told the trooper in slurred speech she didn’t have a license because it was suspended. While the trooper was talking to the woman, he could smell alcohol and marijuana. He asked her to have a seat in his patrol car, and he noticed she appeared to be nervous and her pupils were dilated. She also seemed to have trouble understanding simple questions. The trooper asked her if she had been drinking -- she told him she had some shots at a Chickasha bar and there was a bottle of rum in her vehicle. The trooper told the woman he was going to search her car for the open containers and marijuana. She told him she had some weed and a pipe in the driver’s side door panel. During the search, the trooper found three marijuana joints with burnt ends and a plastic baggy containing a green leafy substance. There was also an open bottle of rum behind the passenger’s seat. The trooper administered sobriety tests and it was soon clear that Linker was under the influence of something. When he asked her about the items he found in her car, she said some of the items belonged to her son. But, she admitted to smoking weed earlier that day. The trooper conducted inventory of the vehicle’s contents for impound, and he found another plastic baggy containing a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana in her purse. The trooper placed Linker under arrest and asked if she would take the state’s blood test. The woman replied, “What’s the point? We know I have THC and alcohol in my system. Why waste the state’s money?” Linker is being charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and intoxicating substance, possession of controlled dangerous substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with license suspended and transporting open container of liquor. She was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on December 10, 2015. The man was drunk and disorderly, and causing all kinds of problems in the store. According to the police report, an Anadarko officer was dispatched to the store in the 1200 block of West Petree shortly after 9 p.m. An intoxicated subject was arguing with an employee, and the employee wanted him off the store’s property. When the officer arrived he saw a man matching the suspect’s description -- the officer recognized him as House. The officer stepped out of his patrol car and saw House throw a knife on the ground. He also noticed House appeared to be intoxicated. The man smelled like alcohol, he was unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred, and his eyes were bloodshot and watery. When the officer tried to put the man in cuffs, House became angry and started yelling and cursing. He started pulling away and fought against the officer. The officer was eventually able to get the man in handcuffs. He then grabbed the knife that House had thrown on the ground. The employee said House had been escorted out of the store because he was drunk and disruptive. After employees took the intoxicated man outside, he sat down on a bench. When an employee told him he needed to leave the property, House approached the man and acted like he was going to hit him. He then grabbed a knife from his pocket and said, “I got something for you, mother f-----.” Another employee who witnessed the incident told the officer the same thing. House was arrested and transported to jail. House is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting an officer and public intoxication. His bond was set at $5,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on December 31, 2015.
