4 | AUGUST 2018 Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty COMANCHE COUNTY
Phillip Williams was an unhappy consumer. So he stopped two Tampa, Florida, police officers, handed over his crack pipe, and asked if they
wouldn’t mind testing the crack cocaine that he’d bought earlier, just to
make sure it was the real deal. Good news! It was. Bad news! They arrested him.
A 17-year-old suspected arsonist approached a car in Lambertville,
Michigan, intending to siphon gas from it. What he forgot to do was ask
permission from the detective sitting in the front seat.
When Sheboygan, Wisconsin, police pulled over a car for not having
proper registration, a passenger did what many criminals do — he supplied the cops with an alias. Bad move. Turns out, that particular alias was
wanted for vehicular homicide.
Alexander D. Smith walked into an Augusta, Georgia, bank and tried
to open an account with a $1 million bill. Great idea — except there is no
such thing as a $1 million bill.
Two machete-wielding men barged into a Sydney, Australia, bar demanding money. Because they didn’t know the club was hosting a bikers’
meeting, one ended up in the hospital, the other hog-tied with electrical
wire.
Convicted of receiving stolen property, James Wombles, 37, had to
wear an ankle bracelet as part of his parole. The bracelet came complete
with a GPS monitoring system that let cops track his every move. Over
the course of a few weeks, the Riverside, Ohio, man allegedly broke into
six homes. You know where this is going — just as the cops knew where
Wombles was going. Following the signals from his bracelet, they tracked
him to his car, where they found him sitting on the stolen booty.
When Ellis Cleveland was arrested in Honolulu, a detective informed him
he was suspected of robbing four banks. “Four?” responded Cleveland,
according to the detective’s affidavit. “I didn’t do four; I only robbed three
banks.”

Lawton Man Pleads Guilty to Failing
to Register as a Sex Off ender
Robert Lee Pierce, 70, of Lawton, Oklahoma, pleaded guilty in federal court to traveling
from New Mexico to Oklahoma and failing to
register as a sex offender, announced Robert
J. Troester, Acting United States Attorney for
the Western District of Oklahoma.
According to an affidavit in support of a
criminal complaint filed on May 17, 2018, the
U.S. Marshals Service learned that Pierce
was registered as a sex offender in New
Mexico as of April 3, 2018, but had actually
been living in Lawton with his wife and several small children. The affidavit states further investigation revealed Pierce moved to
Lawton in the late summer or early fall of 2017. According to the affidavit,
Pierce had been convicted of criminal sexual penetration of a minor victim in
New Mexico in May 2015. In Oklahoma, he would have been designated as
an Aggravated Offender and required to register as a sex offender for life.
Pierce has been in the custody of the Marshals Service since June 5, 2018,
when he appeared before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in Oklahoma City.
On July 5, 2018, the U.S. Attorney filed an information that charges Pierce
with traveling in interstate commerce and failing to register and update his
registration as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, or SORNA.
Today Pierce pleaded guilty to the SORNA violation before United States
District Judge David L. Russell.
At sentencing, Pierce faces up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to
$250,000. After release, he will be subject to supervision for not less than five
years and up to the rest of his life. Sentencing will take place in approximately
90 days.

where art thou?
A Duncan man was put behind bars after a police
officer found him passed out at a stranger’s home on
July 29.
22-year-old Jason Lee Wilson told the officer he
had been drinking and drugging earlier that day – he
also had a gun in his possession.
According to the affidavit, a Duncan officer was dispatched to a home in the 200 block of E. Chestnut at
approximately 1:38 a.m. A man wearing white pants
was passed out on the homeowner’s back porch. The
homeowner had no idea who the man was.
The officer yelled at the man, but he didn’t wake
up. He only opened his eyes when the officer administered a sternum rub.
The officer asked the man, identified as Wilson, if he knew where he was. Wilson replied, “Yeah, I’m outside.”
The officer asked the man if he knew exactly where he was. Wilson again said,
“I’m outside.”
The officer then asked Wilson where he was headed. Wilson said to his friend’s
home and pointed to the house he was passed out by. The officer explained that
the homeowner didn’t know him.
While they were speaking, the officer noticed a pistol sticking out from Wilson’s
pocket. He placed the man in handcuffs and retrieved the loaded gun.
The officer then asked Wilson if he had been drinking – the man admitted
to consuming some liquor earlier that day. He also admitted to smoking some
marijuana.
The officer took the man to the patrol car and searched his person. Wilson
told him there was some marijuana in his right pocket. The officer found a baggy
containing some weed and a black pipe. He then transported the man to the
Stephens County Jail.
Wilson is being charged with possession of firearm after delinquent adjudication, possession of controlled dangerous substance and unlawful possession of
drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $10,000, and he is scheduled to appear
in court on September 12, 2018.

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN!
Medical marijuana has been approved by the people
of Oklahoma, yet our governmental officials and people
who think they know what’s best for us have once
again decided to rewrite what we voted on. What’s
your opinion on this issue?
These comments are only just a fraction we had on our Facebook Page. Read
more by going to our page.
___________________________________________________________________
Ryan S: This was a very badly written bill, and no one wanted to
acknowledge it. So you got what you voted for.
Robert S: I want everything I voted for, no changes just what I
voted for. Go after Meth if you want to help Oklahoma
Matthew M: I knew exactly what I voted for and, if they would’ve
left it alone, there wouldn’t be any problems.
Chris D: Actually Ryan Scott what we voted for was a medication
that had no regulations nor profit margin for big pharma. A natural
solution to the chemicals we have been forced to take. It defined
that we were able to have both smokable and edible forms.
Chris R: The bill was written quite intelligently. The “reefer
madness” stigma is a load of hogwash. Cannabis is far from
dangerous and for the inexperienced the concentrates and edibles
may well be far too potent.
Kris C: Only people who claim 788 was poorly written are
brainwashed with government propaganda. You people are
partially responsible for the opioid epidemic FYI
Rich C: It wasnt written to ban the smoking of the medication. It
was a very broad explanation of how it would be presented to the
public that ill agree with. But making it on the terms they now are
presenting is way off of the presentation that most understood.
Richard J: ...the state effectively kept mmj illegal with their rules,
and that goes 100% against what was voted in. A pharmacist will
lose their license if they dispense, and it would shoot the cost up
dramatically.
Darci T: It’s very simple. The people voted for a policy that gives
the patient and their doctor the power to decide about dosage
and the best method to take the medicine. The patient and their
doctor. The state ruled against the will and the vote of the people.
Whether you’re for mmj or against it, the state has gone against the
vote. It’s wrong and brings the legitimacy of the state government
in question. Mmj is a medicine and people have a right to use it.
Will it be mis-used? Yes. Most good things are misused but we
don’t outlaw them bc of misuse, examples: opioids, food stamps,
welfare, unemployment, SS disability, Medicare, etc.
Erica V: Agree! Well said.
JC J: Actually, we voted for a law that allowed the state Health
Dept. to enact bureaucratic regulations, which is what they are
doing.
Rich C: Bingo
Howard C: And all medicines are regulated which, was called for
in your ballot question
Dylan M: The reason we live in a democracy is to allow those
to vote for their own freedoms, as we should be governed by the
people- not by unelected officials on boards who have ties with the
lawmakers. They knew it would pass, but this is exactly why Mary
Fallin didn’t want to allow a special session in the house, she knew
they would put extreme measures in place.
Mike G: We live in a constitutional Republic ..
Dorothy T: She knew exactly what she was doing when she
appointed the panel she did. She knew what she was going to do
the moment she decided not to hold a special session. I can’t even
put on Facebook what I think of her!

august is back to school
safety month
As summer draws to a close and
children start heading back to school,
family life can get pretty hectic. It’s
important to remember – and share
with your children – some key tips that
will help keep them safe and healthy
throughout the school year.
Getting to School
Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the bus to school, it is vitally
important that they – and the motorists around them – take proper safety precautions.
Walkers:
• Walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk and you must walk in the street,
walk facing traffic
• Before crossing the street, stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars
are coming
• Never dart out in front of a parked car
• Parents: Practice walking to school with your child, crossing streets at cros
walks when available
• Never walk while texting or talking on the phone
• Do not walk while using headphones
Bike Riders:
• Always wear a helmet that is fitted and secured properly
• Children need to know the rules of the road: Ride single file on the right side
of the road, come to a complete stop before crossing the street and walk the
bike across
• Watch for opening car doors and other hazards
• Use hand signals when turning
• Wear bright-colored clothing
Bus Riders:
• Teach children the proper way to get on and off the bus
• Line up 6 feet away from the curb as the bus approaches
• If seat belts are available, buckle up
• Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing
• Do not cross in front of the bus if possible, or walk at least 10 feet ahead until
you can see the other drivers
Drivers, Share the Road:
• Don’t block crosswalks
• Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and take extra care in school zones
• Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians
• Never pass a bus loading or unloading children
• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop
far enough back to allow them to safely enter and exit the bus

Three Wichita Men Paid for Athletic Shoes
with Counterfeit Money
Three Wichita men were indicted on charges of
making counterfeit money and using it to pay for
athletic shoes, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister
said.
Douglas D. Blocker, 21, Wichita, Cornelius D.
Wilson, 22, Wichita, and Traevon A. McGairty, 22,
Wichita, are charged with one count of counterfeiting and one count of passing counterfeit currency. In addition, Blocker is charged with another
count of passing counterfeit currency.
The indictment alleges the defendants used a photocopy machine to
make counterfeit $20 bills. In one count, Blocker is alleged to have met a
victim at the Towne West shopping center and paid him $480 in counterfeit bills for four pairs of Jordan athletic shoes. In another count, the three
defendants are alleged to have met another victim at Towne West and
paid him $520 in counterfeit bills for three pairs of athletic shoes.
If convicted, they face a penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and
a fine up to $250,000 on each count.

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty GRADY COUNTY 25 | AUGUST 2018
living on chickasha time
A Tulsa man was taken into custody after an officer stopped the man for a seat belt
violation and discovered the vehicle he was
driving was stolen.
Austin Shane Brooks, 24, was charged
with felony unauthorized use of a vehicle on
July 26 in Grady County District Court.
According to a press release by the Chickasha Police Department, on July 25, at approx. 1:45 am, a Chickasha Police Officer
saw a gray Chevrolet pickup being driven
by Austin Brooks. Brooks was not wearing
a seatbelt. The pickup turned and drove the
wrong way down a one-way street and was
stopped in the 500 block of S. 11th St. for the
traffic violations. The vehicle was displaying a paper dealer tag showing that
the vehicle was purchased in Oklahoma City on July 6, but had no other information concerning what vehicle was purchased or who the purchaser was.
Brooks was extremely nervous, did not have a drivers license, security verification, or any other paperwork showing he was legally in possession of the
vehicle.
An adult female passenger in the vehicle also had no identification.
Brooks was found to have a suspended driver license and the truck was
reported stolen out of Newcastle on July 6.
A high-risk traffic stop was conducted, and Brooks and his passenger were
taken into custody, without incident. The passenger was interviewed and released at the scene.
Bond for Brooks was set at $7500 and he was ordered back to court on
September 5 for his preliminary hearing conference.
