Duncan man Steffon O’Brien Smith, 34, was arrested
October 9 after he was accused of pestering other citizens
while intoxicated on October 9. He was later hit with more
charges after he attacked officers at the jail.
According to the police report, Duncan officers were dispatched to Walmart on Highway 81 shortly after 6 p.m.
due to a man panhandling in the parking lot. When they arrived, an employee said the man, later identified as Smith,
had asked her for money. When she refused, he walked to
McDonald’s.
While they were speaking, a truck pulled up to the
scene. A woman in the truck said Smith had asked her for
money twice. When she told him no, he slammed his head
into the driver’s side door of her vehicle before heading to
McDonald’s.
Officers went to the restaurant, where they saw Smith walking past the drive-thru
window. When an officer asked what he was doing, Smith said, “I was trying to get
my ID back from my cousin.”
The officer asked if his cousin was in McDonald’s.
Smith replied, “No, he lives in Lawton.”
The officer noticed Smith smelled like alcohol, so he asked the man if he had been
drinking. Smith said, “I drank one beer at six this morning.”
The officer administered sobriety tests and determined that the man was indeed
drunk. He placed him under arrest and took him to jail.
As they were walking into the building, Smith asked, “Where the weed at?” The officer told Smith he could smell the weed – Smith said he couldn’t.
The man’s demeanor then changed, and he started mumbling and walking quickly
into the jail. Once they were in the building, Smith refused to obey officer commands.
When an officer took handcuffs off the man, Smith turned and hit him in the jaw with
a closed fist.
Officers took the man to the ground and put him in a restraint chair. He continued
to yell threats at the officers, telling them he was going to shoot them in the head with
an AK-47. He also spit at the officers as he yelled.
Smith is being charged with assault and battery on detention officer, prisoner placing body fluid on state employee, pulbic intoxication and threaten to perform act
of violence. His bond was set at $50,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court
on November 20, 2019.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

A Florida couple arrested for DUI reportedly attempted to have sexual intercourse in the back of the patrol vehicle about to transport them to jail.
According to PEOPLE Magazine, officials said the couple—identified as
35-year-old Megan Lynn Mondanaro and 31-year-old Seth Aaron Thomas—
were seen attempting to disrobe in the back of the Nassau County Sheriff’s
Office squad car. They had been riding bicycles at night without running lights
and reportedly came in close contact with a motorist when a deputy spotted
and stopped them.
Mondanaro was charged with DUI, exposing sex organs, unnatural and lascivious act and resisting without violence.
Thomas was charged with threat against a public official, unnatural and lascivious act, exposing sex organs and DUI.
Both Thomas and Mondanaro reportedly have lengthy criminal records.
A man who reportedly claimed to be a police officer during an argument with
an employee of a strip club in Waverly, NE—a suburb of Lincoln— now faces
criminal charges of making terroristic threats and impersonating a police officer.
According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Capt. John Vik of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said the man—identified as 26-year-old Keith Charles Urban—had been causing a disturbance at the Shakers Gentleman’s Club and
was being escorted from the building when Urban claimed to be a police officer
armed with a handgun.
An employee told deputies that during the confrontation, Urban drew what
appeared to be a Glock from his waistband and pressed it against the employee’s midsection.
Vik said the man then fled in a vehicle but was apprehended at a vehicle stop
shortly thereafter. Inside the vehicle, deputies reportedly found a CO2 BB gun
that looked like a handgun.
A New York man was arrested after he allegedly tried to pull over a van full of
police detectives.
According to Fox News, the man—identified as 25-year-old Valiery Portlock—reportedly activated emergency lights and sounded an air horn as he
attempted to pull the van over in the Long Island town of Hicksville.
When the occupants of the van—members of the Nassau County Police Department’s electronics squad—identified themselves, Portlock reportedly fled
the scene. He was later arrested by highway patrol and charged with criminal
impersonation, reckless endangerment, and fleeing the police.
A knucklehead Ohio bank robber slipped a teller a hold-up note — with his
name and address scrawled on it, officials said.
Michael Harrell, 54, entered a US Bank branch in Cleveland and passed the
not-so-discreet note, the FBI said.
“When the teller took the note, and looked at it and looked at the other side,
she saw his name, he had used a note that he had used earlier at the [Ohio
Bureau of Motor Vehicles] and it had his name on it,” FBI Special Agent Vicki
Anderson told news station WIVB.
The teller reportedly complied with his demand and handed Harrell $206
before calling the authorities.
“She actually even referred to him as Michael. Gave him the money and called
him Michael and then notified law enforcement,” Anderson said.
Harrell, who was a frequent customer, has been arrested in the robbery, CNN
reported. It’s unclear if charges have been filed against him.

A former employee of an Altus Credit Union was
taken into custody after authorities say she embezzled thousands of dollars from credit union customers and a local soccer club.
Brittany Ann Carney, 30, of Altus, was charged October 22 with six counts of embezzlement in Jackson
County District Court.
According to the Altus Police Department, Carney
is accused of embezzling over $55,000 while working
at Red River Federal Credit Union on North Main in
Altus from August 2016 through February 2019. Investigators have also charged Carney with embezzling approximately $18,000 from the Altus Soccer Club, a position Carney
has held as Treasurer since March 2016.
Financial records indicate Carney transferred funds from the accounts
of three deceased people, along with two other active account holders, to
pay her personal expenses which include credit cards debts, cell phone
charges, electric bills and other miscellaneous charges.
Carney was arrested on October 18 and transported to the Jackson
County Jail. Bond was set at $50,000 and she is scheduled to appear in
court for her preliminary hearing conference on December 5 at 1:15 p.m.

More than 100,000 children and
youth in the U.S. foster care system are awaiting permanent families. National Adoption Month is a
time to raise awareness about the
adoption of children and youth
from foster care.
The Children’s Bureau in partnership with AdoptUSKids and
Child Welfare Information Gateway sponsors the initiative each November as a way to focus public attention on the urgent need for adoptive families for children and youth waiting
in foster care for a permanent family. This year’s focus, “Partnering for
Permanency,” builds on the social media theme from last year. A special
web page on Information Gateway’s website helps child welfare professionals, prospective adoptive parents, and youth partner for permanency.
The website contains resources, stories, and videos on topics such as getting started with social media, how to build a recruitment campaign, and
how social media impacts child welfare and adoption. The website can be
found at http://www.childwelfare.gov/adoption/nam/.

Juries Return Conviction in “Operation
922” Domestic-Violence Gun Trial
Ronald Benton, 47, of Temple, was convicted of illegally possessing ammunition and
a firearm respectively, announced U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Downing. The case is part of
“Operation 922,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s
effort to prosecute individuals who perpetrate
domestic violence and violate federal gun
laws.
Ronald Benton was indicted on December
12, 2018, for possessing a firearm after being
convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. He entered a guilty plea on March
11, 2019. On August 22, 2019, however, the
court allowed him to withdraw his guilty plea
because of a new U.S. Supreme Court case
that held that the government must prove the
defendant knew the status that made his gun
possession a federal crime. On September 3, a grand jury returned a superseding indictment that added the allegation that Benton made a false statement on Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (“ATF”) Form
4473 when he purchased a 9mm pistol in Lawton in May 2018 and stated
he had never been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
A jury heard the evidence against Benton on October 8, 2019. In particular,
it heard that Benton had been convicted of misdemeanor battery against his
spouse in New Mexico in 2007. The evidence showed the ATF contacted
him after his May 2018 firearm purchase to inform him he was not allowed to
possess a firearm. The ATF executed a search warrant at his home in Temple
on June 15, 2018, and found the pistol and ammunition in his bedroom.
Benton was convicted unanimously on October 9 on the gun crime. The
jury acquitted him of lying to purchase the weapon. He faces a maximum
penalty of ten years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release,
and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentencing will take place in approximately 90
days.

Someone in Washington State Donated A
Weed-Filled Cooler Worth $24K To Goodwill
If you have junk you
need to get rid of; Goodwill is the place to go. But
of course, one man’s trash
is another man’s treasure.
A Goodwill in Monroe,
Washington State, received a not-so-ordinary
donation. While sorting
through donations, employees scored a cooler full of weed. Not just a couple
grams, but five whole bags full. Talk about a surprise.
Employees discovered the weed while sorting through donations that day.
So, they decided to call the cops.
Police attempted to track down the cooler’s owner, but the mission was
unsuccessful since they didn’t know if it was donated at this location or at a
Goodwill trailer that sits in another town.
Meanwhile, a lot of people on social media are claiming the cooler is theirs.
According to Debbie Willis of the Monroe Police Department, no one has yet
to fetch it, though.
Believe it or not, pot isn’t the strangest contribution to come through Goodwill’s doors. In fact, people commonly leave the most random of things behind
with their donated goods.
According to Katherine Boury, a spokesperson for Goodwill, employees
once came across three human skulls.
“In 2014, three human skulls were found. We worked with authorities to
track down the origin of the Native American skull for proper burial.”
Two of the skulls had been used for medical research, while the other one
was a Native American skull that was more than 100 years old.
So, what’s the pending date of the donated cannabis? According to Willis,
it’s only a moment of time before it goes to waste.
“It’s sitting in our evidence, waiting yearly burn of that type of evidence.”
At the present time, it’s legal in Washington to possess once ounce of cannabis if you’re 21 and over. The donated stash was 60 times over that limit.

26 | NOVEMBER 2019 GRADY COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
