A Lawton man seemed to think talking dirty to
an underage child half-way across the country
would shield him from the law- he was wrong.
According to Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), on August 9, the OSBI Internet Crimes Against Children Unit (ICAC) received
information from the Alleghany County Sheriff’s
Office in Virginia regarding a possible lewd acts
case.
The suspect was identified as 57-year-old James Janis from Lawton, Oklahoma. Janis had been messaging an individual who he believed was a minor from
Virginia. During the investigation, OSBI special agents learned that Janis participated in several inappropriate conversations with the minor and also discussed
his attempts in contacting other children.
On August 15, the OSBI ICAC Unit, Comanche County Sheriff’s Office, and
Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant at Janis’ residence
in Lawton. OSBI special agents interviewed Janis, who admitted to these inappropriate conversations.
Janis was arrested and booked into the Comanche County Jail on charges
of Lewd or Indecent Proposals or Acts to a Child. Bond was set at $150,000.
This is still an ongoing investigation.
Anyone with additional information on this case is asked to contact the OSBI
at [email protected] or 1-800-522-8017.

AROUND THE NATION
A 39-year-old is charged with Aggravated Assault against a Public Servant, following an officer-involved shooting in East Lubbock.
Lubbock Police were called to the 300 block of
East 37th Street at 9:00 a.m. on August 11th for
a report of a domestic disturbance. Initial information conveyed to dispatch indicated Eliseo Padilla
III was armed with a gun and had destroyed property at the residence.
The responding officer arrived on scene at 9:07 a.m. and found Padilla in front
of the house. Padilla, who was verbally combative, ignored multiple instructions
by the officer to place his hands on a nearby vehicle in order for the officer to pat
him down. After giving multiple commands, and with the knowledge Padilla was
armed with a weapon, the officer deployed less lethal force with his department
issued Taser. Despite the deployment of the Taser, Padilla produced a firearm
and began shooting at the responding officer. In response, the officer drew his
duty weapon and returned fire at Padilla at 9:09 a.m.
The responding officer, who suffered no injuries, immediately notified dispatch
shots were fired and requested EMS. Additional officers arrived on scene and
began dispensing life-saving measures in order to treat Padilla. Upon arrival, EMS transported Padilla to University Medical Center via ambulance with
life-threatening injuries.
An investigation is currently underway by the Lubbock Metropolitan Special
Crimes Unit, LPD’s Office of Professional
Standards and LPD’s forensic unit.
The officer who fired at Padilla was
employed by the Lubbock Police Department beginning in January of 2015.
He is currently on routine administrative
leave per department policy.
Padilla, who remains in critical condition at UMC, was served a warrant for
Aggravated Assault against a Public Servant. His bond is $300,000.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

Two twin brothers were taken into custody last month after they thought- in a drunken stupor- that it was okay to
take grandpa’s car on a joy ride without his permission.
Joshua and Jonathan Cavanaugh, both 23, and both of
Duncan, were both charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, in Stephens County District Court.
According to the probable cause affidavit, on August
22, at approximately 4:10 a.m., a Duncan police officer responded to a call at a home in the 300 block North 3rd
Street regarding a stolen vehicle. On arrival, he made contact with the victim.
The victim said his 1997 Mercury was taken from his
house by his grandsons, later identified as Joshua Cavanaugh and Jonathan Cavanaugh, without his authorization.
He added both Joshua and Jonathan had returned to the
residence on foot from an unknown location.
Joshua stated that he and his twin brother had been
drinking alcohol and wanted to take the vehicle for a”joy
ride”. When the officer asked where the vehicle was left, he
said he didn’t know.
Joshua continued by saying he and his brother traveled
south from their grandpa’s house towards Main Street, turned westbound on Main Street,
then a northbound turn onto 5th Street, then a left turn, and then struck trees.
The officer placed Joshua and Jonathan into custody and assisted them into the back
seat of the patrol unit before escorting them to Stephens County Jail.
The officer later located the abandoned vehicle in the alleyway of the 600 block of west
Walnut Avenue and west Main Street. On approach, he observed the vehicle to be high
centered facing southbound, engine still running and the driver door left ajar.
Bond for both Cavanaugh men was set at $5000 each.

GUILTY AS CHARGED
A 57-year-old Hollister man has been found
guilty by his peers in connection with the murder
of a Grandfield man two years ago.
Allen Dean Collins and the victim were drinking
at a residence in Grandfield with two other people.
At some point, Collins became angry and retrieved
a gun from his truck.
A witness told police officers that the victim and
another man started fighting with Collins, trying to
get the gun away from him. In response, Collins
fired the gun multiple times, hitting the victim.
According to court documents, closing arguments were heard at Collins’ trial
on August 20. Jurors were given instructions on how to precede. Shortly thereafter, they returned with a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree with life imprisonment with the possibility of parole. The jury was polled and then released.
Formal sentencing is scheduled for November 1 at 9 a.m.

The Terral fire chief, who also acted as the
town’s water superintendent, allegedly put a
camera in the women’s restroom at city hall.
According to reports, someone found the
camera in an air conditioning vent above the
toilet.
The fire chief, Cash Levi Alsup, 42, used his
phone to access the camera system. When the
camera was located, Alsup allegedly told the undersheriff, “I’ve done something stupid and I’ll work with you, whatever I need to do.”
Alsup is being charged with using video equipment in a clandestine manner. His bond was set at $5,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on
October 1, 2024.

THAT'S METHED UP!
In today’s episode of “Methed Up” we discuss
once again that if you do meth and run from the
law you will end up exactly like this!! Apparently,
David Helms didn’t get the memo though so he
“Methed Up” and learned pretty quick what happens when you have drugs on you and try to run from Deputies in Brevard
County (Florida)!!
Helms, who by the way could play John Goodman’s stunt double in the movie
“John Goodman Goes Back To High School,” fell asleep at the wheel of his truck
while sitting at the gas pumps at the Merritt Island 7-11 for about an hour, so the
store clerk called to report the suspicious activity!!
After the store clerk called the Sheriff’s Office, Deputies Alec Brannon and
Matthew McCarley arrived on scene and made contact with Helms who exited
the vehicle and took off running on foot!! While I’m pretty sure even “Junny”
could have ran him down, Deputies Brannon and McCarly ran him down themselves and tackled him for fleeing from the traffic stop!! Of course, the real reason Helms was running was because he had a bag of meth and a glass pipe in
his pocket and knew that he was just seconds away from taking the ride to jail!!
My favorite part of this story though is that once he was in cuffs, Helm started
screaming and whining like a little baby and continued to be non-compliant, so
he got handcuffed to the stretcher and transported to Cape Canaveral Hospital
where he was medically cleared for priority check-in at Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge,
aka jail!!
Helms subsequently got booked into the Brevard County Jail on a total bond
of $4,000 for Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Resisting Arrest Without Violence. Of
course Helms also got a free “I Messed Around
And Found Out In Brevard County” T-Shirt so he
can show all his friends that he “Methed Up!!”

AROUND THE STATE
On August 4, around 3:50 p.m., Officers were
called out to a burglary at Kultivation Kingz near
Pine and 169 in Tulsa. When Officers arrived, they
found the business had been burglarized and a
large amount of marijuana was stolen.
The owners of the business reported they had
multiple tracking devices inside some of the stolen product.
Officers tracked down some of the stolen goods
at a home near Edison and Gilcrease Museum
Road. When Officers arrived, several individuals were seen unloading plastic
tubs full of marijuana from a U-Haul truck. When the individuals spotted the Officers, they took off running.
At the home, Officers recovered 283 lbs. of marijuana, believed to all be stolen,
a Glock pistol, and $13,000 in counterfeit $20 bills.
Kym Mayberry was arrested for 2nd Degree Burglary, Trafficking Marijuana,
and Possession of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony.
At this time, we know that the stolen marijuana came from at least four dispensaries that were burglarized. One of the dispensaries was able to recover more
than $50,000 in product after the bust.
Detectives are continuing to investigate this case. Anyone with information
about potential suspects related to the burglaries is asked to call Tulsa Crime
Stoppers at 918-596-COPS. You can remain anonymous when calling.
Please reference case 2024-039644.
FYI, please do not contact us and tell us you’ve recently lost 283 pounds of
marijuana and can identify it in person. TPD
