An Enid man convicted of burglary
in Texas was taken into custody after
police found a gun and a large amount of
ammunition inside his home.
Blake Opry, 28, of Enid, was charged
July 31 with possession of a firearm after
a felony conviction in Garfield County
District Court. If convicted, Opry could
face one to 10 years in prison.
According to the police affidavit, officers
were called to a home in the 300 block
of South 7th on July 27 about a domestic
dispute. When they arrived, they made
contact with the girlfriend who said Opry had punched her in
the face. She couldn’t remember where exactly she was punched
and officers couldn’t see any signs of injuries to her face.
After the the altercation, Opry had gone back inside the house
and locked the girlfriend out. She added that Opry had a gun in
the rim of his pants.
Officers tried unsuccessfully to coax Opry outside so they could
speak with him, but to no avail. The girlfriend said she could let
officers in the back door, so they went around to the back of the
house. After a few more calls to Opry, he finally came out the
back door, was cuffed and detained for safety.
Inside the house, officers found a black and silver Walther
380 APC handgun with a magazine containing one hollow-point
380 caliber bullet and another round in the chamber. They also
found an empty 9mm magazine and another 9mm magazine
loaded with nine rounds of Lugar 9mm ammunition. Also found
was a black bag that contained 22 rounds of 380 ammunition.
Officers confirmed Opry had been convicted of burglary out
of Corsicana County, Texas, in 2004. He was transported to the
Garfield County Detention Center and booked. Bond was set at
$7500 and his next court date is scheduled for August 20.

FORGERY/FRAUD
By John Borgstedt
The criminally incarcerated … where did they come from?
What led to their downfall? Many counselors have traced this
criminal cycle to decades of abuse in the homes they were raised.
At some point, having unbearable memories of pain, the victims began to self-medicate - turning to alcohol or marijuana -
discovering the temporary relief becoming weaker and weaker,
leading to the use of stronger drugs. A slack in their job performance normally followed, getting them fired.
But a drug user needs money to maintain his/her chemical addictions and lifestyle. The user may resort to robbery or more serious crimes, wanting to stop but can’t. And until he/she reaches
a point of dealing with their past abuse, they will never be able
to quit and find ‘change’. Both counseling and ‘forgiveness’ is a must in starting a new and healthy
cycle for their life.
It was many years before I could reach that point of ‘forgiveness’ regarding my own abusers. Even
when seeking answers, I didn’t fully understand what it would take to find counsel and healing, until
writing my first book, ‘I Love You, Mom … Please Don’t Break My Heart’.
“Seconds later, she opened the door and jerked me out of the car, threw me onto the ground like
a piece of trash, and pulled something from her pocket. Even though I knew something terrible
was happening, I did not move a muscle. She would really get angry if I moved! Without saying one
word, she slid a plastic bag over my head, covering my face. For a split second, my mind went numb.
I gasped for breath as her arm pressed tighter and tighter against the plastic bag covering my nose
and mouth. Suddenly the probability of death overpowered all fear of a beating. For the first time in
my life, panic replaced all dread of violence and pain. Gasping and choking, my fingers clawed at the
bag. My mom grabbed at my hands as she struggled to keep the plastic over my nose and mouth. My
weak, undernourished body was no match against my tall, powerful, and very determined mother.
Fighting for breath within the tomb of plastic, I felt her grip tighten even more against my face.”
There are people who think they have been down the darkest road in life with no possible chance
of change, but I have been down that road, too, and if I could turn it around and not only change my
life, but learn how to help others - becoming one of the country’s foremost child advocates – you can
do it, too.
John Borgstedt is a motivational speaker and author of the book “I Love You Mom... Please Don’t
Break My Heart” He can be reached at [email protected] or visit his website at www.ILoveYouMom.net

Enid Police Officer James McFadden was in
the neighborhood of Cherry and Washington
July 5 looking for Morgan Welch, 32, of Enid,
when he noticed him sitting on a front porch in
the 300 block of West Cherry.
McFadden asked him what his name was,
but Welch gave him a false name and birthdate.
Welch was obviously drunk and told the officer
so, adding he was spending the night at the
house. The homeowner was contacted and said
he was not allowed at the house and wanted
him gone.
Another officer who had arrived as backup
searched Welch and found a gun in his front left pocket. The gun had
been reported stolen a couple of hours earlier.
McFadden ran Welch’s name through dispatch and confirmed he
had been convicted of a felony. Welch was cuffed and transported to
the Garfield County Detention Center and booked.
Welch was charged July 10 in Garfield District Court with receiving/
concealing stolen property, false personation, and possession of a
firearm while intoxicated. That same day, he was also charged with
domestic assault and battery in the presence of a child for an incident
that happened the day before.
He was also wanted on a bogus check warrant from April and he had
pled guilty in December to an aggravated DUI charge.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma
Department of Human Services to impact the huge social
problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the
child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts
order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
It’s ALL about the KIDS!
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they have a chance at a
productive life. Children have the right to get support from both parents and do not
lose this right when a parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children, taxpayers often pay the cost
of raising children. When children receive public assistance and their parents pay no
child support, all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

DRINKING AFTER 7 WILL GET YOU BEAT
An Oklahoma City mother has been charged with
child abuse after she “whooped” her 3-year-old
daughter for opening the refrigerator after 7 p.m., investigators said. An arrest warrant is expected to be
issued for Nortesha Harmon, 28, of Oklahoma City.
On July 4, Harmon was dropping off her 3-yearold daughter when she told the child’s father that
she had whooped their daughter with an extension
cord for getting a drink after 7 p.m., court documents
revealed. On July 11, investigators interviewed the
child and noticed bruises on her face and body, investigators said.
The child’s father told investigators that he and the child’s mother did not
have a legal custody agreement, but he allowed her, the mother, to see the
child whenever she wanted, according to court document. The child was
treated at Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City.
What you’re saying
about this on...
Tyler A: sounds like the father’s picture
should be up here too for letting someone
like this care for a child.
Melissa A: wat a shame
LeAnna B: wow.. stuff like this breaks my
heart... SHE IS A BABY.....
Wendy O: omg people make me sick...
Vanessa S: sad! poor baby
B.gaylene H: Beat the hell out of the
mother
Traci S: Someone should beat this (woman) in the face with an extension cord.. Over
and over. Poor baby.
Stacie R: Stupid (woman)!!! She needs
her a** beat with an extension cord!!!
Paula G: You don’t beat a kid with an extension cord.......not at any age, not for any
reason!
Cheryl H: WHY WASNT SHE WATCHING HER 3 YR OLD ANYWAY!!!!!!!! GIVE
ME AN EXTENSION CORD AND I WILL
PLAY MOMMY DEAREST WITH HER!!!!!
April R: Someone needs to beat this thing
with a few dozen cords all over her body. She
shouldn’t be allowed anything to drink for 7
days at the least & only then just a sip then
no more for another 7 days etc for 7 years.
What the hell is wrong with people now days.
I would never deny anything to drink to my
children. They are allowed water anytime
they want/need but they know that other
drinks like juice & kook aid is off limits after
8 but if one sneaks & gets some then big deal
I sure the heck am not going to physically
punish them for it. Geez
D Ariana H: Its sad how many cases are
out there like this, and how many people
out there who dont deserve children, have
them:( Poor babygirl
Robyn M: How stupid could she be?
Marlene D: Some body should whip her
with an extension cord for being so stupid.
Jonathan N Jessica: Bring the electric
chair back.for.people like her, geez do not.
cut her no slack hate people like this!!!
Patty K: Why is she allowed to have this
child. What does do after 7pm when she is
thirsty. Whipping the child with an extension
cord the mother should whipped with one.
Rosie P: This (woman) looks healthy as
hell. Super glue her lips together but leave
a slit on one side just big enuf for a coffee
straw full of everclear. ( once a day ). Start
at her neck and wrk down with a tazer every
30 mins.
Vincent R: A 3 year old child really a 3
year old don’t know better cuz it a child don’t
mean u gotta beat the sh** out Of em she so
stupit
CharlieandStaci: what could possibly
make this woman so sick to beat her child?
Poor child. My heart cries for the child.
Prayers... Hope justice is served!
Tricia M: maybe they should tell her go
outside for awhile but you cant have water
after 5pm! LOL

Noble County officials are looking
for a Perry man who tried to run over
several officers; he was trying to avoid
capture on an outstanding warrant for
unlawfully manufacturing of CDS(meth)
out of Cleveland County.
Official charges were filed against
Bobby Christopher Crawford in the case
August 8 in Noble County District Court.
Crawford is wanted on two counts of
assault with intent to kill, eluding/
attempting to elude police officer, and
possession of drug paraphernalia.
Crawford, 34, is described as a blonde white male with green
eyes, stands about 6 feet, two inches, and weighs around 200
lbs.
According to the probable cause affidavit, OBN agents, US
Marshals, and members of the Oklahoma Fugitive Task Force
had secreted themselves around his home last April 13 on
Rattlesnake Road near Perry when they saw someone drop him
off. He then got into his car and drove off. Down the road, a
US Marshal tried to stop him, but Crawford barreled toward
the deputy marshal with the intent of killing him with his car.
Fortunately, the deputy was able to dive into a ditch and avoided
being run over.
Crawford was eventually caught after an OBN agent shot him
in the hand when he tried to run over that agent. Crawford was
taken to the Noble County Jail and questioned. He said he knew
officers had been at his mom’s house the night before looking for
him and that neighbors on Rattlesnake Road had tipped him off
that officers also were at his home.
Call the Noble County Sheriff’s Department if you have any
information about Crawford’s whereabouts.

death Row
Michael Hooper
The Oklahoma Court of
Criminal Appeals set Aug.
14 as the execution date for
Canadian County death row
inmate Michael Edward
Hooper, 39.
Hooper was convicted and
sentenced to death for the
murder of his ex-girlfriend,
Cynthia Lynn Jarman, 23,
and her two children, Tonya
Kay Jarman, 5, and Timmy
Glen Jarman, 3, on Dec.
7, 1993. Hooper shot each
victim in the head twice and
buried their bodies in a shallow grave in a secluded fi eld.
The victims had been missing for several days before
being discovered.
The truck that Cynthia had been driving also was
found abandoned and burned. Police records, including
domestic violence reports, show that Hooper and Jarman
had previously been in a physically violent relationship.
The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Hooper’s
convictions in 2002, but overturned his death sentences.
Hooper claimed his legal counsel made mistakes during
the second stage of his trial. In a 2004 hearing, Hooper
was once again sentenced to death.
Attorney General Scott Pruitt requested the execution
date on June 4, after the United States Supreme Court
denied the inmate’s fi nal appeal.

Summer time can be a time of
fun, whether its at the lake, pool,
or any of the numerous other
activities to be found throughout this great state, but it is also
a time of serious heat. With temperatures reaching into the
100’s many times already, and more to come, I thought I would
touch on the way heat can affect your traveling plans, and some
tips to help you beat the heat!
First, be prepared. Cars suffer in the heat just like we do. If
and when they break down, you’ll want to be ready. Be familiar
with your emergency equipment in your vehicle. This means
learn where your jack, spare tire, and tire tool are. Learn how
to use them. Figuring that out on the side of the road at 102
degrees is no fun at all. The owner’s manual of your vehicle
has a section on roadside emergencies that can help you figure
out where the emergency equipment is stored, and tips on
how to use it. Learn the steps to change a flat! Although we
will be happy to help you if you are broken down, we aren’t
always close, and may not be able to get to you for a long period
of time. If you know how to get yourself out of a roadside
emergency, that’s less time you’ll spend in the heat.
Take lots of water with you if you are going on a trip, especially
if it’s a long one. Have a cell phone with you so you can call
for help if you need it. Be aware of your surroundings when
driving, so you can give the person you call for help an accurate
location for where you are. Also, if you can get your car to a
place of shade, do so. Temperatures can be up to 20 degrees
cooler in a place of shade such as an overpass or large trees.
Lastly, make sure your car is maintained properly. Ever
notice how many pieces of tires you see on the roadway during
the summer? The heat is hard on tires, so make sure they are
properly inflated and have good tread. If your tread is worn,
get them replaced! The pavement those tires are rolling on is
even hotter than the thermometer is showing! Visually check
your belts, and make sure all your fluids are filled up. That
ounce of prevention can keep you from being stuck on the side
of the road in 100 plus temperatures.
Preparing for roadside emergencies in the heat is just as
important as it is in the winter, but it seems like we just don’t
prepare the same for it. Just a few minutes of learning how to
change a flat, packing in a case of water, and being aware of
your surroundings can keep a bad day from being a whole lot
worse! Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

Registered Sex Offenders for The Area
FACT:
If a victim does not say “no” or
does not “fight back,” it is not
sexual assault.
False. Sexual assault victims may not say “no” or
not fight back for a variety of reasons including fear
and confusion. Rape victims often report being “frozen”
by fear during the assault, making them unable to
fight back; other victims may not actively resist for
fear of angering the assailant and causing him to use
more force in the assault. Pressure to be liked and not
be talked about negatively by a peer will sometimes
cause adolescents or children to avoid fighting back or
actively resisting.

The former head of the Kingfisher
Department of Human Services, Steven
Renald Torres, pled guilty July 11 to
driving a motor vehicle while under
the influence of alcohol and possession
of a controlled dangerous substance
(marijuana). He was handed an 18-month
deferred sentence after reaching a deal
with prosecutors.
As part of his probation, Torres must
complete Alcohol and Drug Substance
Abuse Courses, undergo urine analysis
testing at random, attend a victim impact
panel, be under the supervision of the
district attorney for one year, and pay fines and costs.
DHS spokeswoman Sheree Powell said Torres had resigned from
his position following the charges being filed.
Torres was arrested Dec. 7, 2011, near the 400 block of Utah in
North Enid after making “an improper turn from eastbound Purdue
to northbound 4th Street” at approximately 11:30 p.m.
The arresting officer stated he “could smell the odor of intoxicants
and noticed that the driver’s speech was slurred and he was visibly
nervous” after he stopped Torres.
Torres subsequently was administered a standardized field
sobriety test, after which he was arrested “for suspicion of driving
under the influence of intoxicants,” according to the affidavit.
Torres was transported to Garfield County Detention Center,
where he was administered a test to measure his breath alcohol
content. That test revealed a breath alcohol content of 0.13, well
above the .08 legal limit.
Torres was then instructed to empty his pockets prior to the
breath test, at which point the jailer “noticed a white film case
which he opened and discovered a green, leafy substance inside.”
which tested positive for marijuana.

An intoxicated man was arrested
July 30 after he caught the attention
of a Highway Patrol trooper by
flipping him the bird.
According to the police affidavit,
Trooper Donald Kraft was patrolling
along Highway 8 just outside
Fairview when he approached a white
pickup driven by Mark Byfield, 42,
of Fairview. As he got closer to the
truck, Kraft saw Byfield extend his
middle finger toward him and flip
him the bird. When he turned his
patrol unit around, he noticed Byfield
cross over the center line while he was watching him in his side
view mirror.
Byfield pulled into the Jiffy Convenience Store and Kraft
pulled in behind him. Byfield got out of his truck and walked
toward Kraft with his hand extended and apologized for flipping
him the bird. Kraft said he didn’t care about the gesture, but
did care about Byfield crossing over the center line.
While the two were talking, Kraft noticed an odor of booze
coming from Byfield’s breath. He asked him if he had anything
to drink earlier and Byfield told him one beer. Kraft ran
Byfield’s license and it came back flagged as revoked. He then
gave Byfield a field sobriety test and he showed signs of being
intoxicated.
Byfield was placed under arrest, put in the back of the patrol
car and transported to the Major County Jail where he refused
the state’s breath test. He was booked in on complaints of fail
to keep right on road, DUI, DUS, and child endangerment
because he had his two-month-old baby in the truck with him.
The truck was released to the baby’s mother.
