We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money or
favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting
offi cer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.

Two Enid women were caught stealing flowers from the
Enid Cemetery because they reasoned that no one was going
to take care of them anyways.
According to the affidavit, the cemetery manager contacted
Enid police on May 29. She said other people had told her
that there were two women riding around the cemetery, stealing items from multiple gravesites.
She followed the suspects, and police pulled over their vehicle in the 400 block of E. Chestnut.
As the officers approached the truck, they noticed several
flowerpots and metal ornaments in the pickup bed.
The passenger in the truck, Pamela Chambers, 63, told an
officer that she had asked the driver, Tina Louise Earhart, 47,
to take her to the cemetery to get some old flowers from her
friend’s grave.
When asked about the flowers in the truck, Chambers said
the older ones were the ones she had put on the grave of her
friend, nicknamed “Peanut.” She said they removed the flowers because they were dead.
Chambers claimed that the fresh flowers in the truck had
been there before the women went to the cemetery.
Earhart told the same story, except she referred to “Peanut”
as Chambers’s dog. Chambers was quick to say that Peanut
was a family friend, not a dog.
The officers and the women returned to the cemetery, and
they went to the grave where Chambers said she had retrieved the dead flowers. Both women
claimed they only took flowers from that gravesite.
The cemetery manager claimed that there had been no flowers or ornaments on that grave
before, and one of the pots that was now on the grave, she had placed on a nearby gravesite
a few days prior.
At this point, both Earhart and Chambers admitted to taking things from other graves.
They told an officer that they took the flowers because no one was going to water them, and
they were going to die anyway and be thrown away.
An officer later spoke to Earhart’s husband, who was concerned about his wife’s whereabouts. When he was told she had been arrested, he said he told the women before they left
the house that it was a bad idea to steal the flowers.
Both women are being charged with receiving/ concealing stolen property and removal of
cemetery ornament. They were both released on $3,000 bonds and are scheduled to appear
in court on July 14, 2014.

“It is important to review the events
surrounding the execution of Clayton
Lockett to ascertain what transpired
and to ensure the death penalty is
administered correctly. It’s equally
important that any such review
be conducted with a commitment
to objectivity. Transparency and
impartiality in the fact-fi nding
surrounding this execution will give
Oklahomans confi dence and lend
credibility to the state’s most solemn of
duties: carrying out the sentence of death.
As the state’s chief legal offi cer, and to ensure the fair administration
of justice, I am taking the following actions:
• Assigning investigators from the Attorney General’s
Offi ce to work with DPS Commissioner Michael Thompson as he
gathers information on the execution of Lockett;
• Designating a special advisor(s) to assess the results of
the review of Lockett’s execution, and Department of Corrections’
procedures, and then to recommend, if necessary, any changes
surrounding such issues;
• Instructing my staff to work with lawmakers on any
relevant legislative proposals emanating from the review;
• Ensuring victims’ concerns in the process are addressed.

An Oklahoma City man was arrested May 22 after he broke
into an Enid bar because he allegedly told police God told him
to.
It gets crazier.
When an Enid officer arrived at the bar in the 3600 block of E.
Market, the owner of the bar told him that she had found a man
in her establishment.
The man, Joe Don Ong, 47, told the officer in very fast speech
that he wasn’t breaking any laws and he was told to go to the bar.
Ong was holding a small dog.
The officer asked him who told him to go to the bar, and Ong
told him God, according to the affidavit.
Ong quickly explained that he knew it sounded crazy, but it
wasn’t.
Oh, good.
Ong said it wasn’t crazy because he was no longer smoking synthetic weed — he was now
smoking the real stuff.
Wait, what?
The officer asked him how long it had been since he smoked the real weed, and Ong told
him he just did and he had some in his pocket. The officer told Ong to place his hands behind
his back. He placed Ong in handcuffs and found a burnt marijuana cigarette in his pocket.
The officer took Ong to his patrol vehicle. Ong told him that everything was OK, because he
took down the sign. The officer later found out that Ong had removed a sign from the door
that said no pets were allowed in the bar.
The officer also found out Ong made himself at home while in the bar. He moved a mat
from the bathroom to the front porch, rearranged pool cues and T-shirts, brought his own
pool balls into the bar, set up a table, spread some of his clothing out in the bar, drank a soda
and moved a white cash register. He also left a pair of boots, a pet carrier, papers, a glove and
a straw hat in the business.
During a search of Ong’s vehicle, police found rolling papers and another marijuana cigarette.
Ong is being charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and breaking and entering dwelling without permission. His
bond was set at $2,500 and he is scheduled to appear in court on July 7, 2014.

Oh, to be young again…
Police have arrested a high school sophomore after they learned she gave them a false
name and is actually 31 years old.
KLTV reported the Longview, Texas, investigation found Charity Anne Johnson is 31.
Johnson was enrolled at New Life Christian
School as “Charity Stevens.”
School officials said a person claiming to be
her guardian brought her to enroll.
She gave the school a fake birth date that
would have made her 15.
The school discovered her false identity Tuesday.
She has been at student at the school since October 2013.
Resident Tamica Lincoln said Charity told her she was 15 and needed a place to stay back in March.
“I sympathized with her and invited her into my home,” Lincoln told
KLTV. “I took her in as a child, did her hair, got her clothes and shoes.”
Lincoln said Charity claimed she was abused by her biological father
and that her mother was dead.
Lincoln told KLTV she acted as Charity’s guardian and even met
with Charity’s 10th grade teachers at New Life Christian School.
“I just don’t know why she did it,” Lincoln said. “Why put yourself
and others at risk to do something like this? I have deep concerns
about her being who, we don’t know she is, and then she’s out there
at the school.”
Lincoln said she called police and went straight to the school as soon
as soon as she realized Charity was using a fake identity.
“Teachers were crying and students were crying and her best friend
just couldn’t believe it,” Lincoln said.
Johnson was arrested for failure to identify/giving false, fictitious
information.
KLTV said she is in the Gregg County Jail on $500 bond.

Mary Elizabeth Morgan Pewitt, 25, was found inside her
residence in Comanche, OK on June 4, 1988. A divorced
mother of two, Mary worked at a local bar and had closed
the establishment around midnight June 3. After driving
over to the bar owner’s house where she dropped off the
day’s proceeds, she returned home where she was met by a
boyfriend. Mary and her boyfriend visited for a short while
before he left the residence, becoming the last person known
to have seen her alive. It was shortly after the boyfriend’s
departure that investigators believe someone entered the
house and viciously stabbed Mary to death. Mary had recently
been involved in a volatile relationship regarding child support. On the night she was
murdered, Mary’s children were not at the home because they had spent the night with
Mary’s parents. The OSBI did not enter the case until 1997 when the agency asked to
assist the Comanche Police Department.

As the weather starts to warm
up, recreational thoughts naturally
turn to the wonderful lakes
and other waterways in the state of Oklahoma. Along with the
increase of activity in and around the water, comes the potential
for drownings or near drownings, most of which can be prevented
with the use of Personal Floatation Devices. I’ve talked about them
before, but a refresher never hurts, so here goes!
First, let me just say that there are 5 types of PFDs. I’m not
going to get into their descriptions, just which types are required
for what situation. All PFDs must be U.S. Coast Guard approved,
and used in accordance with their label. The label will also state
the type. All vessels must carry one wearable (Type I, II, III,
or V) USCG approved PFD for each person on board or being
towed. In addition to that, vessels 16 feet in length or longer
must have one Type IV USCG approved PFD on board and readily
accessible. Oklahoma Law requires that all children under 13 years
of age wear an approved PFD whenever underway in a vessel less
than 26 feet in length. Each person on a personal watercraft or
sailboard must wear an approved PFD. Anyone being towed on
water skis or similar devices must wear an approved PFD. Ski belts
are not approved PFDs.
Now, besides being USCG approved, all PFDs must be: In good
serviceable condition. They must also be readily accessible. Readily
accessible means you must be able to put the PFD on in a reasonable
amount of time in an emergency. PFDs should not be stowed in
plastic bags, in locked compartments, or have other gear stowed on
top of them. They must also be of the proper size for the intended
wearer. Sizing for PFDs is based on body weight and chest size. A
good way to test this, especially for children, is to put it on, adjust
the straps, and have the wearer raise their arms up, and try to pull
it up off them. If it can come off, it is not the right size for the
wearer.
Those are the requirements, so now lets talk about the
suggestions. If you have children in or around water, make
sure they have a PFD on. Air mattresses, floaties, and other toy
floatation objects don’t count. There have been way too many
stories of toddlers near the water’s edge falling in and drowning,
and these could be prevented by following this suggestion. Also,
keep a watchful eye on those kids...even if they are only out of
your sight for a few seconds, its long enough for them to get in
trouble around the water. Last, wear one on boats even if you don’t
have to. In an emergency, you may not have enough time to put it

A Perry women who had just left work on May 18 probably
didn’t think she was going to spend the night in jail instead of
her home.
That’s just the chance you take when you carry meth and weed
in your bag.
According to the affidavit, a Perry police officer was on patrol in
the 1800 block of Fir when he noticed a woman, later identified
as 39-year-old Chastity Ann Jeet Nida, walking with her bicycle.
He pulled behind her and exited his patrol car. He told her he
stopped to check on her, and she told him she was fine and was
walking because she was tired of pedaling the bike.
The officer asked where she was coming from, and she told him
she had just left work. When he asked for her ID, the officer saw
a clear plastic bag in Nida’s wallet.
She handed him her ID and closed the wallet.
When the officer asked her what was in the bag, Nida reopened her wallet and handed the
bag to the officer. The bag contained a green leafy substance that later tested positive for
marijuana.
Nida told the officer someone else had put the bag in her wallet. Nida became very upset
and kept asking the officer if she was going to jail.
Another officer arrived to assist, and he asked Nida if he could search her bag. She agreed,
but when he pulled out a small cosmetic bag, she told him he didn’t need to open it because
it contained feminine products.
The officer told him it didn’t bother him, but Nida wasn’t trying to hide tampons.
Inside the bag, there was a spoon, a needle and a plastic bag with a crystal substance. The
spoon later tested positive for meth.
Nida immediately insisted that the items were not hers, but the officers weren’t buying it.
They placed Nida under arrest and transported her to jail.
Nida is being charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, second and
subsequent offense, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. She was released on a
$5,000 personal recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 11, 2014.

Enid man Cody Wayne Garlett, a convicted felon, told a deputy that sometimes he likes to believe he’s not a felon
when he was caught with a firearm.
It doesn’t work that way, Garlett!
Unfortunately for the 27-year-old
man, criminal records don’t go away
with wishes.
According to the affidavit, a Kingfisher County deputy was dispatched to
the Dover Loyal Bridge west of Dover on
May 21, due to people shooting on the
river. The reporting party was afraid
that a bullet might hit the houses in the
area.
When the deputy was walking down to the river, he heard a large
caliber firearm go off multiple times. The deputy saw four adults and
an infant down by the river. He could see that Garlett was holding a
pistol-type firearm; he then fired rounds into the river.
The deputy drove to where the subjects were, and heard more
shots. He walked up to the bridge and told them not to fire any more
rounds. He asked them if they had permission to be there; one of
the men told the deputy that he was there to meet a friend and he
didn’t know. Garlett walked toward the deputy with two firearms in
his hands. The deputy verified that they were unloaded.
The deputy asked Garlett if he had seen him standing on the bridge.
Garlett said yes. The deputy asked why he kept shooting. The trigger
happy man told him he didn’t know.
While speaking to Garlett, the deputy noticed the smell of alcohol.
Garlett admitted that he had consumed “seven beers.”
The deputy asked the individuals present if any of them were convicted felons. Garlett admitted that he was.
The deputy retrieved the firearms, and Garlett handed over the
loaded magazines.
The deputy told Garlett that he knew better than to have firearms
and ammo in his possession after a felony conviction.

June’s Officer of the Month Award goes to…

Athena
Officer of the Month
Athena is a K-9 Officer with the Pushmataha
County Sheriff’s Office. She was nominated for
her loyalty and quick action when a deputy
was being assaulted by a suspect. She is one of
three K-9 officers the county has on the street.
On April 8, Antlers dispatch radioed that an
officer needed help on NE A Street in Antlers.
The suspect, Barney Sutterfield, was being
placed under arrest for an outstanding warrant
when he ran from police. After a Pushmahata
deputy later located Satterfield, Satterfield
again resisted arrest and tried to escape. Several times Satterfield was warned to stop resisting or the deputy would release his K-9,
Athena, and he would be bitten. Satterfield did
not heed the warning and began kicking the officer. On her own, Athena bit Sattefield on the
leg. Athena’s actions forced Satterfield to stop assaulting the deputy and taken into custody.
Because of Athena’s quick action, she has been named OK Jailbird’s Top Cop for June, 2014.

Can you actually get arrested
for impersonation of a skunk? A Carmen woman was taken to jail
for a DUI after her passenger was
transported to Alfalfa County for active warrants. Some people need to
find new friends.
On May 20, police pulled over Jennifer Jean Evans, 41, after they received
reports of a possible drunk driver
heading southbound on state Highway
8, the affidavit states.
A state trooper and a Major County
deputy conducted the traffic stop on
U.S. 60, south of Orienta. The trooper
made contact with Evans, who couldn’t seem to find her driver’s license or insurance. The passenger was able to produce an ID, and the trooper checked
both individuals for warrants. She was advised that the passenger had warrants
out of Alfalfa County.
The deputy took the passenger to meet an Alfalfa deputy at the county line.
The trooper asked Evans to exit her vehicle and sit in the patrol car. Evans
was unsteady on her feet, and the trooper noticed a strong smell of alcohol on
Evans’s person. Due to her extremely intoxicated state, the trooper was unable
to conduct field sobriety tests on Evans.
The trooper asked in Evans would use a field sobriety testing device, but Evans refused, so she placed Evans under arrest and conducted a search of her
vehicle. She found a glass half full of a liquid she thought smelled like vodka.
Once at the jail, Evans agreed to take the state’s test; her blood alcohol level
measured .27.
Evans is being charged with aggravated driving a motor vehicle while under
the influence of alcohol, operating vehicle without driver’s license in possession and transporting an opened container of an intoxicating beverage. She
was released on a $10,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June
24, 2014.
