An Enid couple’s attempt at stealing a
freezer and getting past local police landed
them each felony charges Oct. 19.
That day, Enid police officer Aaron Barber
was on patrol when he saw a red Nissan
pickup truck parked in the middle of the
roadway, with Timothy Dennis, 33, and
Jolita Craig getting ready to lift a freezer
onto the truck bed. The pair was taking
the fridge from a wrecker lot, which had
appliances ready for scrapping. However,
the property still belonged to the wrecker
company.
Barber pulled up to Dennis and Craig to
ask them if they were dropping the freezer
off or picking it up. They said they were
leaving it, and Barber told them it was
illegal for them to remove anything from
the property. Craig and Dennis said they
would drag it back to the lot.
Barber went around the block some time
later to make sure the freezer was put back,
but he saw Dennis and Craig driving away
with the freezer in their truck bed. When he
pulled them over, Dennis said, “Can’t you cut me a break? I’m going
to prison anyways.” He didn’t have any luck, however, as Barber said
he was under arrest for larceny.
Dennis wouldn’t go quietly, however. He tried to initiate a fight
with Barber and was eventually tackled to the ground, with the
officer kneeing him on the right side. A search of Dennis after his
arrest turned up a couple of plastic bags of methamphetamine, and
the pickup had several used needles and other paraphernalia inside.
Dennis and Craig face charges of petit larceny and possession of a
controlled substance, with Dennis receiving an additional charge of
assault and battery on a police officer. Craig also has an obstruction
charge.
Craig posted bail Oct. 30, but Dennis remains in custody. They
have court set for 1:15 p.m. Nov. 25.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol
This month’s Tips is less of a tip
than it is a serious request for help
from you, the motoring public. I would like to make a personal
appeal to each and every reader who sees this to help us Troopers
try to eliminate one of the toughest jobs that we ever have to do. It
is something that everyone who drives can have an impact on.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is tasked with the investigation
of motor vehicle accidents on the public roadways outside the city
limits in the State of Oklahoma. In the course of this, we investigate
a huge number of fatalities. For each fatality victim, it is the duty
of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to personally notify the next of
kin. For each life lost, there is a knock on a door somewhere, where
an OHP Trooper has to deliver news that will forever change the
lives of the person or persons on the other side. Sadly, these knocks
on the door could have been prevented by somebody involved in
the accident. Sometimes it’s the person who died whose unsafe or
unlawful action caused the accident that took their life. Often times
it is not.
Each and every Trooper you see working the roads every day has
had to knock on that door. I think if you asked, every single one
would tell you this is the worst aspect of our job. Trying to prevent
this is one of the reasons we do what we do. We know if we work
hard, we can stop some of these knocks. We also know the motoring
public can help us stop some of these knocks as well. The following
are just a few ways for you to do your part to help.
First and foremost, obey the law. It really doesn’t matter if
your personal opinion of the rules of the road don’t make sense,
or shouldn’t apply in certain situations. Each one of them is
designed for us to travel safely on the road. Slow down, and give
your full, undivided attention to the road. Watch out for the other
driver. When you see something happening ahead of you, slow
down! “I was late”, or “I was texting” just doesn’t cut it as responses
to a grieving family when they ask why this happened. Is it
something you could live with if it was your reason for taking a life?
The people on the other side of that knock aren’t the only ones
affected by the experience. We Troopers have all held strangers as
the initial horror and shock of the news takes hold of them. We
have all prayed with families we just met, and asked if we could have
done more to prevent it. Each and every day we are trying to stop
The Knock. Now I’m asking you to help us. Thanks for reading,
buckle up, and be safe!
Tips from a Trooper

Saying “sorry” to police after
trying to start a knife fight doesn’t
mean you won’t go to jail, an Enid
man learned Oct. 13.
Around 7:30 p.m. that day, Enid
police officers were dispatched to a
home after receiving a report about
a man throwing knives during a
fight over being on another man’s
property. When they arrived, the
caller said he was watching a football
game when he overheard his wife
and a neighbor talking to Winser
Ekiek, 28, who kept yelling at them.
The caller said he told Ekiek to leave his property, which only
made him angrier.
Ekiek said he was “going to go get his brothers” to settle the
score, so the caller went in his house to grab his baseball bat.
Soon after, Ekiek threw a knife and another object at him, which
the man ducked. The knife was on the ground near the front
steps of the man’s residence.
The officers then went to Ekiek’s home, where he was hiding
out in the basement. He said, “I’m drinking, I’m mad and I’m
sorry cops.” Ekiek got upset because he thought his neighbors
were talking about him, so he confronted them. When asked
about throwing the knife, Ekiek looked at the ground, nodded
and said, “I’m drinking, I’m sorry.”
The neighbors said they were just talking about everyday
things, but Ekiek believed they were talking about him and
his family, so he started cursing at them. One of the neighbors
confirmed Ekiek threw a large chef’s knife, which missed its
target.
Ekiek faces a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous
weapon. He has court set for 1:15 p.m. Nov. 25.
Ekiek remains in custody.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children,
taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children
receive public assistance and their parents pay no child support,
all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

around the nation
A night he soon won’t forget
Rogelio Andaverde, a 34-year-old Texas man, was jailed Oct 10
after he allegedly faked his own kidnapping in an effort to dump
his wife for a night of partying.
According to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, Andaverde
and his wife were home at around 10:30 p.m. that night when two
masked men broke into their home and kidnapped Andaverde at
gunpoint.
Investigators say the Sheriff’s Office launched a manhunt, but
called it off a few hours later when no leads developed on the case.
Andaverde arrived back home that morning, explaining to his
wife that his captors “just let him go.”
When officers arrived on the scene to interview Andaverde,
something about his explanation didn’t sound right to them.
Andaverde was taken into custody and interviewed again at the Sheriff’s Office.
He reportedly admitted to investigators that he fabricated the kidnapping because he
wanted to go out drinking with his friends.
“I don’t think his wife appreciated being kept until 4 or 5 in the morning, being interviewed
by the cops while her husband was out doing who knows what with who knows who,” said
Hidalgo County Sheriff, Guadalupe Trevino. “He’s going to have a lot of answering to do.”
Andaverde was booked into jail and charged with making a false report to police. He was
released after posting $5,000 bail.

Oklahoma couple Elizabeth Pester, 33, and Mark Knapp,
48, have been jailed after they nearly starved their 3-year-old
daughter to death while they allegedly immersed themselves in
an online video game.
Second Life, an online 3d world where players can create an
entirely new virtual identity and then interact with other players
using that identity, became more than a game to Elizabeth
Pester and Mark Knapp.
It almost became a death sentence for the couple’s 3-year-old
daughter, who withered away while her parents spent the bulk
of their time on a computer, pretending to be a married couple in their new virtual world.
According to police, the problem began almost immediately after the child’s birth.
Investigators say DHS agents took the couple’s newborn into protective custody just a couple of
weeks after her birth. Case workers noted that Pester and Knapp had refused to spend much time with
the newborn, and the child was having feeding issues as a result.
In 2011, the child was returned to her parents in healthy condition, however it didn’t take long before
the feeding issue returned, and in a far more severe way.
In June, 2012, the little girl was taken to a local hospital where she weighed just 13 pounds and
appeared seriously malnourished. DHS responded by referring the child’s parents to a therapist who
would weigh the child on a weekly basis. That therapist saw the child just four times and weighed the
child twice over a five month period, according to court documents.
Pester and Knapp have been booked into the Tulsa County jail and charged with child abuse and
neglect. Bond has been set at $50,000 each.

Oklahoma County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a substitute
teacher after students reported she was intoxicated and passed
out in a classroom office at Millwood High School.
April Chamberlain, 30, was supposed to be acting as a
substitute in a biology class. Students said she appeared
disoriented and used profanity. When students found
Chamberlain asleep in the office, they contacted a coach, who
informed the principal.
The principal said after she repeatedly shouted and tapped
Chamberlain on the shoulder, the substitute woke up. The principal said
Chamberlain had blood-shot eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol.
When a deputy arrived, she saw an open bottle of Canadian Whisky in
Chamberlain’s purse. The deputy also noted Chamberlain kept slurring and was
unsteady on her feet.
Chamberlain was arrested and booked into the Oklahoma County jail for public
drunkenness.

A beer-lovin’ Yale man was placed behind
bars after he left the scene of a hit-and-run
collision.
On Oct. 22, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol
trooper was advised of a two vehicle hitand-run collision on I-35 in Noble County.
According to the affidavit, the victim, the
driver of a semi that had extensive damage to
the rear of the trailer, had pulled over to the
side of the road, but the other driver involved
had fled the scene.
The trooper set out to find the other vehicle
and located a white SUV that had excessive
front and driver side damage.
There was no one inside the vehicle, but there were numerous beer
bottles in a ditch near the vehicle.
Another trooper soon located a man, later identified as Michael
James Pershall, 44,
in a field near the vehicle. He had three bottles of beer with him.
Without any prompting, Pershall immediately told the trooper, “I
wasn’t driving.”
He said his wife had been driving the SUV at the time of the accident,
but she had left and was coming back to get him.
Pershall smelled like alcohol and had slurred speech. He told the
troopers that the beer in the ditch did not belong to him.
A trooper asked Pershall if he would be a liar if any of the beer bottles
were found to be cold. Pershall said, “OK, I’m not going to lie, those
are mine.”
Pershall said that the driver of the semi had run into him. A trooper
found that Pershall’s license was suspended with modified driving
privileges. After an investigation, the trooper determined that there
was no evidence that anyone beside Pershall had been driving at the
time of the accident.
The driver of the semi gave police a description of the driver that had
also been involved in the collision; it matched Pershall.
Pershall was unable to complete standard field sobriety tests and
told the trooper, “I can’t do this because I’ve been drinking.”
Pershall is being charged with obstructing an officer. He was freed
on a $7,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 9, 2013.
Blame it on the wife

God chose Moses to

God takes it personally when we don’t honor His servants.
Moses was chosen to lead Israel, but the people grumbled.
They didn’t get what they wanted. We are no different than
Korah and his friends.
We don’t take responsibility to change ourselves, we keep
doing the same things, and when we’re caught or suffer, we
complain and blame others.
What happened to Korah? Read it for yourself in your

tragic event! Can history repeat itself? Yes!

After police in Kingfisher went on a high-speed chase Oct. 22,
a local man went to county lockup for much more than a simple
ticket.
Just before 11:15 p.m. that day, two Kingfisher police officers
were at the Atwoods parking lot talking outside of their patrol cars.
They were preparing to return to driving patrol when they saw a
maroon pickup speeding at least 15 miles over the speed limit. One
of the officers tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver, Benny
Cantellay, 49, decided to drive faster, pushing speeds past 80 mph.
The officer continued to chase Cantellay throughout Kingfisher,
with Cantellay eventually stopping at a driveway in the city.
Cantellay immediately got out of the car upon stopping, pill bottle
of marijuana in his chest pocket, and at that point it became clear
why he was behaving erratically. He said he didn’t stop because he
knew he was speeding and didn’t want to get in trouble, and he slurred that he was driving
home from Walmart.
During the conversation, the officer noted Cantellay had alcohol breath, so he decided to
ask more questions. Cantellay said he was speeding because he was “just trying to get home”
and admitted to having three beers before driving. He also said he was taking back pain
medication and apologized repeatedly for speeding.
Soon after, Cantellay failed a field sobriety test, and he said his medication “messes him
up” and probably shouldn’t have been driving because he mixed alcohol with the medicine.
He was then arrested for driving under the influence.
However, going to jail wasn’t in Cantellay’s plans for the night. Once he arrived for
booking, he kept talking about wanting to walk out of the jail and tried to leave the building,
which prompted police to drag him by his pants back to a seat. Also, Cantellay charged at
another officer who was filling out his booking report, which landed him on the ground still
handcuffed. Cantellay then started falsely complaining about being hurt and threatened to
get rich off suing everyone on staff if jailers didn’t call an ambulance.
When EMS arrived, Cantellay refused to let nurses draw his blood voluntarily and kept
saying he wanted to start a fight in the jail. He also said he would expose criminal histories
of jailers who were charged with crimes in the past.
“If someone beats me up, I want to sue county for all it has,” he told police.
Cantellay faces charges of assault and battery on a police officer, DUI, possession of
marijuana and attempted escape from detention. He posted a $10,000 bond soon after his
arrest and will be in court next at 2 p.m. Nov. 18.

A Sharon woman was arrested for drugs after the vehicle she was riding
in was pulled over for speeding.
On Oct. 27, a Major County deputy was on patrol on Highway 412 when
he noticed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. He engaged his radar
and found that the truck was driving 82 mph in a 65 mph zone, the affidavit
states. The deputy activates his lights and conducted a traffic stop on the
vehicle.
He made contact with the driver, Charles Brandon Perkins, 35, of Thomas, and asked him if he knew why he was pulled over. Perkins said probably
because of his speed and stated that he had no reason for speeding. The
deputy retrieved Perkins’ driver’s license.
Dispatch informed the deputy the Perkins’ license was under suspension
for a previous traffic violation. The deputy placed Perkins under arrest and
asked whose vehicle he was driving.
Perkins said his girlfriend, who was a passenger in the truck, had borrowed it from someone in
Texas. Two other females were also in the truck, but none of them were able to produce identification.
One of the women, who identified herself as Haley Olevia Marlatt, 30, appeared to be very nervous.
The deputy searched the perimeter of the vehicle with his K9, and the K9 alerted on the passenger
side. He asked Perkins if there was anything illegal in the truck. Perkins said no and told the deputy to
search it if he wanted to.
As the deputy started to search the vehicle, he noticed that Marlatt appeared to be getting more and
more nervous. She told him that he had previously pled guilty to possession of CDS. In a purse that
Marlatt said was hers, the deputy found a glass pipe that had a white residue and two baggies that
contained a loose white substance and a white rocky substance, which later tested positive for meth.
He also found a green substance and rolling papers, which later tested positive for marijuana.
Perkins is being charged with driving under suspension and driving 82 mph in a 65 mph zone. His
bond was set at $500, and he is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 27, 2013.
Marlatt is being charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
Her bond was set at $10,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 21, 2013.
