Loose lips

An Enid man could have felony convictions on his record after an arrest for
getting on local officers’ bad side during a
traffic stop Sept. 24.
Around 1 a.m. that day, Enid officer Kenyon Hughes and two other officers initiated a traffic stop, pulling over Edward
Stamps, 43. While police talked to Stamps,
they noticed he kept his teeth closed and
was only moving his lips, which made
Hughes believe he was hiding something
in his mouth. Also, he was slurring his
words and not understanding questions.
When Hughes asked Stamps to open his
mouth, he tilted his head back and said no. After being asked again,
Hughes started arguing and would not cooperate. Eventually, one of
the other officers helped Hughes grab the back of Stamps’ neck and
place fingers on each side of his Adam’s apple, preventing him from
swallowing. That did not sit well with Stamps, who began struggling
repeatedly, even after being told he was under arrest for obstruction.
Once one of the officers took out his Taser, Stamps tried to run, but
to no immediate avail. He struck Stamps in the back, causing Stamps
to try escaping again. But Hughes gave chase, hitting Stamps with his
own Taser and making him fall. Even so, Stamps tried to get up, but
was held down to the ground while officers handcuffed him and was
Tased one more time after continuing to struggle.
Soon after Stamps was successfully detained, Hughes searched the
area for the item in Stamps’ mouth, believing he spit it out while on
the run. Sure enough, he found a yellow plastic bag with methamphetamine inside.
Stamps faces charges of possession of controlled substances and
resisting arrest. He has court set for 9 a.m. Oct. 25. He remains in
custody.

Deal or no deal
One of Enid’s marijuana dealing couples
is broken up after a woman turned her partner in to local police Oct. 1. That day, Detective Casey Von Schriltz interviewed a woman
about reports of stolen cash and large amounts
of marijuana. She initially said her boyfriend,
David Coblentz, 32, has not used or sold marijuana, but soon after began crying, telling Von
Schriltz she was worried about Coblentz retaliating against her for informing on him.
The woman said there were seeds and stems from marijuana
plants in her house, adding that Coblentz has multiple marijuana
pipes in his room. Von Schriltz followed her inside the house, where
the woman pointed the detective to the contraband. Von Schriltz
obtained a search warrant later that day, serving it around 1:20 p.m.
In the house, Von Schriltz found two bags of marijuana, weighing
44 and 32 grams, inside a drawer in Coblentz’s bedroom. In drawers
from another table in the room, police found glass jars and plastic bags containing an additional 85 grams of marijuana, as well as
several different denominations of cash. Also, a purple cookie tin in
the room had nearly 7 grams of marijuana, and a wooden box had
multiple smoking pipes, Von Schriltz said.
Marijuana wasn’t all police found, however. Inside a safe, they located multiple prescription pills, many of which weren’t labeled. To
make matters worse for Coblentz, the home is less than 1,000 feet
from Enid High School.
Coblentz was arrested right after the search was complete. The
woman, who was not arrested, said she knew about the drug sales
but need a place for her and her children to stay. She, however, did
say she was glad police stepped in because she was afraid of Coblentz and what he might do to her.
In an interview at the county jail, Coblentz said he thought he only
had a half ounce of marijuana and denied selling it. He bought such
large amounts to avoid having to constantly find a dealer, he said.
Coblentz posted a $3,500 bond Oct. 7. His last court date was 9
a.m. Oct. 10.

Well, the temperatures are
dropping, and fall is almost here,
and these things signal the start
of football season in Oklahoma! Not only have our major colleges
had their first home games, but all across the state, people are
traveling to and from football games from 4th graders on up to high
school. With that in mind, here are a few tips to make this football
season safe.
Lets start with college. Whether you are a Sooner, Cowboy, or
Golden Hurricane fan, one thing is for sure...you aren’t alone! There
are thousands of fans for each home game traveling to the
stadiums. This volume of traffic demands your consideration. First,
if you can, leave early! The closer to game time, the worse the traffic
gets, so if you can, get to the stadium early. There are plenty of
things on a game day that are going on prior to kickoff that you can
spend your time enjoying. There are usually lots of free stuff for the
kids to do that make the whole game day experience wonderful for
them as well.
Second, be patient! You WILL run into traffic, so plan ahead, and
don’t get frustrated with it. Turn on the radio, listen to the pregame hype, and remember to be a safe, courteous driver. Getting
frustrated, and getting into a hurry, can result in a traffic accident
that will delay your arrival, and could end up being very expensive,
not to mention the potential for injury.
Last, be aware that there are usually some temporary traffic
control changes on game days. Both before and after the games,
law enforcement will be at intersections controlling the traffic
lights, and making adjustments to keep the traffic flowing in the
best possible manner. Be alert and aware, and recognize when and
where these temporary traffic controls are taking place!
Now, on to the local games! The biggest thing I remember from
growing up is that parents are usually running late to get to games,
because of what time they got off work. This has not changed... we
Troopers are stopping folks who are speeding trying to get to a kid’s
ball game all the time. While we understand, (we have kids too!)
we also see all too often what happens when accidents happen as
a result of unsafe speed. If you get stopped by us, you’re going to
be even later, and possibly on the hook for a hefty fine. If you get
involved in an accident, you may not make the game at all.
Finally, when you do get there, be a good fan! Cheer your team,
don’t denigrate the other team. Use appropriate language in the
stands; remember, there are kids of all ages in the stands with you.
We Oklahomans love our football, just remember to show your
support in a positive way!
Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!
Tips from a Trooper

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children,
taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children
receive public assistance and their parents pay no child support,
all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

The following is a list of early
warning signs that someone may
be abusive. This list was put
together by survivors of domestic
violence who reflected on the
early phases of the battering
relationship and identified some of
the early warning signs of abusers.
Someone who:
• Wants to move too quickly into the relationship.
• Does not honor your boundaries.
• Is excessively jealous and accuses you of having affairs.
• Wants to know where you are all of the time and frequently calls,
emails and texts you throughout the day.
• Criticizes you or puts you down; most commonly tells you that
you are “crazy,” “stupid” and/or “fat,” or that no one would ever want
or love you.
• Says one thing and does another.
• Takes no responsibility for their behavior and blames others.
• Has a history of battering.
• Blames the entire failure of previous relationships on their
partner; for example, “My ex was a total bitch.”
• Grew up in an abusive or violent home.
• Insists that you stop spending time with your friends or family.
• Seems “too good to be true.”
• Insists that you stop participating in leisure interests.
• Rages out of control and is impulsive.
Pay attention to the “red flags “and trust your instincts. Survivors
of domestic violence frequently report that their instincts told them
that there was something wrong early on but they disregarded the
warning signs and didn’t know that these signs were indicative of
an abusive relationship. Always take time to get to know a potential
partner and watch for patterns of behavior in a variety of settings.
Keeping in touch with your support system and participating in
good self-care can lower your risk of being involved in an abusive
relationship.

abuse Awareness Month

GREEN CARD ROMEO
Broken Arrow police arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting
two nursing home patients.
The women are 93 and 80 years old, and are patients at Franciscan
Villa in Broken Arrow. Police say what helped in their investigation is
how quickly the staff there contacted police.
Police say Uqbasilassie Zerie admitted to sexually assaulting the two
women several times over the past six or seven months. They say the
situation came to light when one of his co-workers saw something
unusual.
“She goes into the elderly patient’s room, turns on the light and sees
the suspect pulling up his pants,” said Cpl. Leon Calhoun, of the Broken Arrow Police
Department.
The staff at Franciscan Villa called police that very day, September 11, 2013.
The next day when Zerie came into work, the staff says he admitted assaulting the woman
in that room.
Officers say, when they interviewed him, he also admitted to assaulting the second victim.
Zerie’s Facebook page says he worked for St. John, the company that owns the Villa, but
he didn’t say what his job was.
Zerie’s not listed as a licensed nurse on the state’s website.
Police say that early reporting was key.
“It’s better to get out there and verify there’s not a problem than to be called after the fact
and miss a chance to prosecute someone, because there’s no evidence or he’s gotten out of
the area,” Calhoun said.
Police say the suspect is working in this country on a green card from East Africa. They
say he’s been working in the Broken Arrow area for the past two years. Now, he faces five
counts of sexual assault.

An Oklahoma City woman was arrested because she falsely identified
herself to police and couldn’t seem to
get her story straight.
On Sept. 19, a Perry officer was on
patrol when he saw a white van parked
in the Noble County DHS parking lot.
The officer knew that the business was
closed since it was nighttime, according to the affidavit.
The officer also observed that the license plate on the van was hanging on
by one corner.
The officer conducted an investigative traffic stop and made contact with the female driver. She
asked him what she did wrong and he told her that she is parked
at a closed business and that her license plate is barely hanging
on.
She handed him a driver’s license, but the picture on the license
did not look like the driver. The officer told her that there was no
way that the license belonged to her and she told him. “Oh, that’s
my friend’s license.”
He asked her if she had a driver’s license. She told him, “Apparently not on me or not in the vehicle.”
The officer asked her what her name and date of birth was. She
told him Megan, then said, “No, I mean Maggie Barnett.”
The officer told her that she was starting to look suspicious. The
officer ran both names through dispatch and found that the driver, Maggie Jean Barnett, 22, had a flagged driver’s license.
The officer asked how she had acquired the other license and
she told him that it belonged to her best friend and they had hung
out the night before.
Police questioned Barnett’s male passenger who told them that
they had hung out with the friend last week. An officer asked Barnett why he said that, and she said that he wasn’t with them last
night and didn’t know about it.
When police questioned the male subject again, he said, “Oh
yeah, we did hang out with her last night.”
Police concluded that the subjects were obviously lying since
their stories didn’t match.
Barnett was arrested and transported to jail.
Barnett is being charged with falsely personating another to
create a liability. Her bond was set for $1,500 and she is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 28, 2013.

Robert Pry, a 21-year-old Arkansas man, was jailed after he
allegedly spent the night inside a Kmart huffing 16 cans of air
duster.
According to Jonesboro Police, officers were dispatched to a
local Kmart store early Sept. 1 morning after employees found
Pry asleep inside a storage room.
Officers arrived to find two feet sticking out from a cubby hole
underneath a set of stairs. Those feet belonged to Pry, who was
covered with his own urine and vomit.
Pry told officers that he entered the store just before closing time
and hid out until the employees left. That’s when he commenced
huffing 16 cans of air duster. The empty cans were found scattered
about the room where Pry was found unconscious.
Pry also stated that he borrowed a friend’s truck, drove to a
nearby Walmart, and purchased $100 worth of air duster. Officers located the truck where
they found several more empty air duster cans.
Investigators say Pry spent “all of his money” on air dusters, but wanted more. He later
told police that he was “addicted to huffing.”
Pry was taken to a local hospital before he was booked into the Craighead County
Detention Center. He was charged with commercial burglary, theft, inhaling intoxicating
compounds and failure to appear. His bond has been set at $1,700.

A Loyal man may need a second lesson in proper
driving after his second DUI arrest Sept. 21.
Around 11 p.m. that day, Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Ray Robertson was on patrol in Kingfisher County when he saw George Newer, 50, nearly collide with his patrol car while speeding. Soon
after, he initiated a traffic stop, and Newer pulled to
the side of the road. When Robertson approached
him, he noticed Newer’s eyes were glazed over and
bloodshot, and he also smelled strongly of alcohol.
After providing his identifying information, Newer went to sit in Robertson’s police car while the
trooper asked questions. He initially denied having anything to drink, but field sobriety and Nystagmus tests revealed otherwise. He had a hard time standing and
following directions during most parts of the sobriety test, Robertson said. Once
Robertson told Newer he saw clues indicating he was drunk, he admitted to having
a cup of sprite with “a little bit of vodka” in it.
Eventually, Newer was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. In an interview,
he said he had a mixed drink at 8:30 p.m. and just wanted to go home, adding that
he was stressed about having an upcoming divorce. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test because he was going through another DUI case and didn’t want to deal
with another one, Newer said. Court records show Newer has a pending DUI case
from April in Major County.
Newer posted a $5,500 bond the day after his arrest. He has court set for 9:30
a.m. Oct. 17 in Major County and 9 a.m. Oct. 28 in Kingfisher County.
Drinking the troubles away
leads to more trouble
An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper had a busy
night at work Sept. 21, arresting multiple people for
drunken driving in Kingfisher County, including a man
who was so drunk he didn’t realize his phone was submerged in alcohol.
Just before 9 p.m. that day, trooper Ray Robertson
was patrolling U.S. Highway 81 when he saw a car drift
in and out of lanes. Robertson followed the driver, Paul
Schmolke, 48, for a few minutes, then pulled him over
about three miles south of Hennessey to find out what
was happening.
When Robertson approached Schmolke’s car, he was
nearly overwhelmed with the smell of alcohol coming from inside. A quick look
in the car showed he had a glass of orange juice, which was about a quarter full
and had Schmolke’s cell phone submerged inside. Schmolke did not realize his
cell phone was in the juice until Robertson told him, but did say he was driving
erratically because he had a low tire.
During the conversation, Schmolke said he had “a little bit” to drink. He
failed multiple field sobriety tests, however, despite saying he had only one
mixed drink. He denied being drunk even after losing his balance on the heelto-toe test, which was on a flat surface. Eventually, Schmolke started talking
about his vodka, which was inside the orange juice.
Vodka, orange juice,

Due to technical problems with the Kingfisher County
booking system, this month’s Kingfisher County arrests were
not available at press time. We apologize for the inconvenience
to our readers. OK Jailbirds will include, if possible, October’s
booking report for Kingfisher County with its November issue.
We would like to thank the Kingfisher County Sheriff’s
Department for doing everything in their power to get the
data to us, but their system just wouldn’t allow it.
Thank you!
Police trying to fi gure out who egged and toiletpapered a house in a south-central Montana town
cracked the case after fi nding a grocery bag and a
receipt in the backyard.
Livingston Police Chief Darren Raney said that
a resident reported his house had been targeted by
vandals on Aug. 29.
Investigating offi cers tracked the bag and receipt
to a Livingston store, where video from a surveillance
camera showed a group of teenage boys purchasing
eggs and toilet paper.
Raney tells the Livingston Enterprise the boys,
ages 15 and 16, were referred to the juvenile
probation offi cer.
An Ohio man has been cited for public
drunkenness and criminal trespass for a notso-great effort to commandeer a freight train in
northwestern Pennsylvania.
Police say 28-year-old Robert Nerone Jr., of
Jefferson, Ohio, somehow hopped aboard the
eastbound CSX train in Ashtabula, Ohio and moved
car to car as the train slowed to a stop in Millcreek
Township. That’s in Pennsylvania, just outside of
Erie, about 120 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Millcreek police Capt. Randy Faipler tells the
Erie Times-News that Nerone reached the train’s
main engine and banged on the windows, telling the
engineer and conductor he was commandeering the
train about 3:30 a.m.
Online court records don’t list an attorney for
Nerone, who doesn’t have a listed phone.
There are people who feel the way some motorists
park should be a crime. In this case, it was - sort of.
Police in New York State say a man wanted on a
probation violation ended up being arrested because
he parked so poorly.
A state police investigator spotted a man as he
tried to back his vehicle into a parking space at a
truck stop in Rotterdam, New York.
Police say the investigator took note of the man
because he parked crookedly, taking up two spaces
in the process.
When the man walked away, he recognized
Matthew Bergeron from previous arrests - and knew
he was a suspect in a burglary and was wanted on
outstanding warrants in a neighboring county.
He was taken into custody without incident - and
sent to jail.
That’s something you might not want to post on
Facebook.
The online message said the pot dealer would
be in a store parking lot in a black and silver Ford
Taurus for anyone who wanted to buy.
Police in Bemidji, Minnesota, went looking for the
pot dealer.
But a local paper reports offi cers didn’t fi nd
anyone.
The pot sale notice was posted on a community
for-sale page.
The man who set up the page says police asked
that the marijuana listing be left up, so offi cers could
try to catch the dealer.

Mark Gregory Valdez, a 33-year-old inmate at
the Oklahoma County Jail, incurred an additional
charge when officers found a loaded handgun
hidden inside his rectum.
According to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s
Office, Valdez was being held at the Oklahoma
County Jail on a minor charge when a fellow
inmate told authorities that Valdez had been
bragging about a handgun that he managed to
sneak into jail.
After turning Valdez’ cell inside out looking
for the firearm, officers conducted a body cavity
search. That’s when officers found a loaded
Derringer pistol hidden inside Valdez’ rectum.
Investigators say Valdez was taken to a local
hospital after the gun was removed. The gun was found in operational
condition and loaded with a single round of ammunition.
Investigators say Valdez submitted to a pat-down search when he was
booked into jail, but somehow managed to be processed without passing
through a metal detector.

A 59-year-old Fairview woman was arrested for driving under
the influence after a Fairview officer pulled her over on suspicion
of a suspended license.
In the early morning hours of Sept. 24, the officer was on patrol
when he saw a vehicle driving down the road that he knew was
primarily driven by two individuals, both without a valid license,
according to the affidavit. When he was closer to the vehicle, he
saw that the driver was Edwina L. Parmenter, whom he knew
had a suspended license.
He followed Parmenter and watched her make several turns.
Although she used her signal on every turn, she would travel several feet into the oncoming lane of traffic.
The officer activated his lights and pulled the car over. When he made contact with
Parmenter, he immediately smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. He asked her
for her license and proof of insurance and she told him that she couldn’t find either.
The officer asked Parmenter how much she had had to drink and she told him “five or
six” beers. When he asked her if she thought she was drunk, she said yes.
He asked the intoxicated woman to step out of the vehicle; when she did, she almost
fell.
Parmenter told police that she would not be able to pass the field sobriety tests. She was
arrested and transported to jail.
Parmenter is being charged with a felony charge of DUI. Her bond was set a $3,000
and she is scheduled to appear n court on Nov. 13, 2013.
