A Garvin County man faces multiple
felony charges after police say he
committed crimes against cattle.
On March 31, sheriff’s deputy Zach
Barby took a larceny report from a man
who reported six head of red Limousine
cattle missing. The man said the cattle
were stolen from his pasture, and
they were branded and had their ears
tattooed.
On April 12, Barby received a call from
the man’s mother, who said she believed
Heath McCoy, 32, and an accomplice
stole the cattle and had them on his land. The accomplice, who
was not arrested, tried to sell the cows to another person after
rebranding them, she said.
After confirming the cattle’s presence with McCoy’s neighbor,
Barby went to McCoy’s pasture, where he saw McCoy’s brand,
as registered with the Oklahoma Cattleman’s Association, on the
cows.
At that time, lieutenant David Lansdale started keeping
surveillance tabs on the accomplice and McCoy. In an interview,
the accomplice denied knowledge of the six stolen cattle.
On April 13, officers arrested McCoy at the Weatherford Oil
Tools yard. McCoy denied stealing the cattle repeatedly, even
though police saw his brand on them the day before. He was taken
to county lockup for multiple complaints of stealing cattle and
fraudulent branding.
Police later learned McCoy was trying to sell the cattle for $1,000
each. He branded the cattle and tried to hide the owner’s brand,
according to the affidavit.
McCoy has previous convictions for burglary and grand theft
auto, Barby said. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on April 15
and posted a $25,000 bond April 23.
McCoy will appear in court at 2:45 p.m. April 24.

Treva Cannon was found dead in
her white frame house on Tuesday,
August 23, 1983. Investigation
determined she had been struck
with a blunt object, killing her.
Carter County District Attorney
Ron Worthen, and Oklahoma State
Bureau of Investigation (OSBI)
agent and Ardmore police were at
the scene late Tuesday morning
waiting for an OSBI lab team from
Oklahoma City.
“We don’t really have a lot right
now. We haven’t touched anything waiting on the lab team,” Worthen
said late that morning at the scene.
Shirley Stinson, a neighbor, said she heard a “banging noise” around 1
a.m. and got out of bed to check.
“My son had just gotten home from work and was writing a letter to his
girlfriend. So I didn’t think much about it,” the neighbor said.
Brenda Sparlin, a neighbor, said, “She usually leaves for work at 7:30
a.m. but her car was still there..... I tried to call twice before I went over
there. I knocked and she didn’t answer. The front door was open and
when I walked to the back the back door was open. I saw her in the front
bedroom.”
Ms. Cannon was a social worker for the Department of Human Services
at the Pauls Valley State School. She formerly taught at Springer junior
and senior high schools, and Ardmore Junior High School. Mrs. Cannon
received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Texas Tech
University and a master’s in education from East Texas State Teacher’s
College. She also received a master’s degree in social work from the
University of Oklahoma. She was a resident of Ardmore area for 21 years.
Ms. Cannon’s murderer has never been found.

By Lt. Jeff James
Oklahoma Highway Patrol
Ever think to yourself, “what an
amazing time we live in?”
Technology is so incredible, that
we take for granted stuff that wasn’t even possible 40 or 50 years
ago. Whether its cell phones, GPS systems, instant information
through the internet or high tech cars, we go through this world with
a wide array of things that make our lives easier. But what happens
when something goes wrong? I’m going to talk about things that
can go wrong, that may leave you on the side of the road, and ways
you can help yourself in these situations.
Its hard to believe that people still run out of gas these days.
Incredibly, it still happens on an almost daily basis. Sometimes, it
is the result of just not paying attention, and sometimes it is the
result of trusting a little too much in the technology that is built into
our automobiles today. All Troopers have heard from a stranded
motorist that their vehicle said they still had 20 more miles until
empty. The fact is, that number is usually generated by past driving
behavior and gas mileage averages, and is not an actual measure
of how much gas is left in the automobile. Do yourself a favor and
give a cushion...start looking to fill up any time you are under a 1/4
tank of fuel. Also, pay attention to the gas gauge. In the event that
you do run out of gas, be prepared! No matter how high tech your
vehicle is today, its just a big hunk of metal if it runs out of gas!
You may want to carry a small gas can. You certainly want to get
your vehicle off of the roadway to prevent it from being a traffic
hazard and putting yourself and others in danger. If you walk to a
gas station, be alert for traffic. *55 will get you in touch with a local
Highway Patrol Headquarters, but the Trooper may be a long way
off, or on a
call, so be prepared to help yourself! Another common problem
we run into is people who need their vehicle jump-started. You
may forget to turn the lights off and park it somewhere, or leave an
interior light on, or anything that may drain the battery.
Carry a set of jumper cables. If you have those, all you’ll need
is another person whose vehicle is running, and you can get yours
going! Make sure to refer to the owner’s manual to make sure how
to hook up the cables properly. As high tech as vehicles are today,
hooking them up wrong could result in further problems!
Ever hear that old saying about and “ounce of prevention”? Keep
up the maintenance on your vehicle. The owner’s manual usually
has a maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle. Old sayings
usually are old because they are tried and true! Thanks for reading,
buckle up, and be safe!

A Pauls Valley teenager needed to learn to pick on someone her
own size March 23, police said.
That day, officer James McGaha went to The King’s Kids, where
they spoke to the father of a 12-year-old boy. The man said he came
to get his kid, only to find him bleeding on his face. The boy told
him Ashley Day, 18, grabbed the back of his head and forced him
face-first into a counter top.
Several other children on the scene said Day hurt the child, then
left because “she knew the police were coming” and would get in
trouble.
McGaha found Day in the city, and before he could get a word
out, Day started yelling, “I didn’t do it! I didn’t do anything. I didn’t
touch that boy.” The officer, knowing the truth, told her to get in the
patrol car so she could go to the station, but Day screamed, “no” and took off running.
After a chase, McGaha found Day hiding behind a door of a nearby business, where she
called her mom and told her “The cops are here to get me, come get me the f--- out of here.”
Once they busted the door open, Day kicked McGaha’s assistant in the crotch multiple
times. She kept struggling, despite officers’ attempts to handcuff her in a wrist lock position.
Only when they threatened to use pepper spray did she finally give up.
Day has two pending charges of assaulting a police officer, as well as an escaping detention
charge. She has court set for April 26 at 10 a.m.
Day remains in custody.

On April 25, an OSBI agent assigned to
the Internet Crimes Against Children Task
Force arrested Floyd W. Midkiff, 64, at his
residence, 1207 W. Cherokee St., Apt. 19,
Lindsay.
On several occasions, Midkiff distributed
images containing child pornography to an
undercover Guthrie police officer assigned
to the task force. Task force members from
the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office
and the OSBI ICAC Unit, with assistance
from the Lindsay Police Department, served
a search warrant at Midkiff’s apartment. Investigators searched
computer-related items at the scene and found dozens of videos
containing child pornography and photographs.
Officers arrested Midkiff and booked him into the Garvin County
Jail for Distribution of Child Pornography, Possession of Child
Pornography, and violation of the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act.
The computer-related items seized at Midkiff’s apartment will be
sent to the OSBI Computer Crimes Unit for further analysis. The
case remains under investigation.

An Ardmore woman’s old boyfriend was
finally arrested April 4 after he pointed a
gun at her head and robbed her of cash and
a cell phone back in November.
Sa’Ron Johnson, 20, of Ardmore, was
charged with robbery with a weapon in
Carter County District Court.
The victim said she was getting ready for
a shower on Nov. 29, 2012, when she looked
into the mirror and saw Johnson’s reflection
behind her holding a large, black, semiautomatic weapon, according to the police
affidavit. He then demanded money and her phone. The victim gave
Johnson $20 and her phone, which was worth about $500.
Johnson then ran out of the residence and headed west on 6th
NW.
A witness saw Johnson leave the victim’s home.
Police searched the area, but was unable to find him.
A week later, the victim reported Johnson had returned and
smashed out her front window.
Johnson is being held on a $50,000 bond in the Carter County
Jail. His preliminary conference is set for May 21 at 9 a.m.

Armed Bank Robber Lets His Guard Down
Armed Bank Robber Lets
His Guard Down
An armed bank robbery in
Melbourne, Fla., was cut short
when the robber seemed to
become a bit mesmerized by
the blonde teller, allowing her
an opportunity to grab his gun.
According to Melbourne
police, the man walked into
the Florida Business Bank on
Harbor Blvd at around 2:50
p.m., pulled a gun from his
pants and demanded cash
from the teller.
The teller complied with the
robber’s demands and placed an undisclosed sum of cash on the counter.
When the robber set his gun on the counter to collect the cash, the teller quickly snatched
it up without hesitation. The robber grabbed what cash he could, stuck it in a bag and fled
from the bank on a bicycle.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children,
taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children
receive public assistance and their parents pay no child support,
all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

Answer: The first thing to
understand in this discussion
is that there is only one race—
the human race. Caucasians,
Africans, Asians, Indians, Arabs,
and Jews are not different
races. Rather, they are different
ethnicities of the human race.
All human beings have the same
physical characteristics (with
minor variations, of course).
More importantly, all human
beings are created in the image
and likeness of God (Genesis
1:26-27). God loved the world so
much that He sent Jesus to lay
down His life for us (John 3:16).
The “world” obviously includes all ethnic groups.
God does not show partiality or favoritism (Deuteronomy 10:17; Acts 10:34;
Romans 2:11; Ephesians 6:9), and neither should we. James 2:4 describes
those who discriminate as “judges with evil thoughts.” Instead, we are to love
our neighbors as ourselves (James 2:8). All forms of racism, prejudice, and
discrimination are affronts to the work of Christ on the cross.
Jesus commands us to love one another as He loves us (John 13:34). If God is
impartial and loves us with impartiality, then we need to love others with that
same high standard. Jesus teaches in Matthew 25 that whatever we do to the
least of His brothers, we do to Him. If we treat a person with contempt, we are
mistreating a person created in God’s image; we are hurting somebody whom
God loves and for whom Jesus died.
Racism, in varying forms and to various degrees, has been a plague on humanity
for thousands of years. Brothers and sisters of all ethnicities, this should not be.
Victims of racism, prejudice, and discrimination need to forgive. Ephesians 4:32
declares, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just
as in Christ God forgave you.” Racists may not deserve your forgiveness, but we
deserved God’s forgiveness far less.
What does the Bible say about racism,
prejudice, and discrimination?

You have to wonder the logic of some people this world. Don’t
wonder too hard. You’ll hurt your brain. One criminal known as
the “Sticky Note Bandit” got caught because she parked her car in a
handicapped zone while committing one of her crimes. The scheme
worked like this: The “bandit” and one of her accomplices would
sneak a note onto a cashier’s register saying something to the effect
of “Kathryn is owed a refund” for a certain amount. Then the woman would go in the store claiming to be the woman on the note to
whom the store owed her money. Her scheme could be considered
brilliant if her intellect didn’t get in the way. Police spotted her vehicle parked in a handicapped zone and when they went to cite her,
they recognized her name from a local “Most Wanted” list. “Most
Stupid” is more like it.
An 11-year-old in Spain staged a fake kidnapping just to avoid
a parent-teacher conference. He sent a text message to his father
alerting him that he’d been kidnapped while taking out the trash.
His father just happens to be police officer, who sent out a search
all the way into Portugal. It turns out that the little actor was just
hiding out at another house his family owned. Needless to say, the
conference never happened.

A Newcastle trio must answer to a seconddegree felony charge after police say they
tried to break into a house with the help of
her two dogs April 12.
At 1:15 p.m. that day, Newcastle detective
K.O. Morrisey received a report from another
officer, who reported a witness to a burglary
at the 3800 block of Northwest 32nd Street.
The suspects, a man and woman, had two pit
bulls with them and took off running, where
they were found a block away. The officer
said the female suspect was in custody and
her partner was barricaded inside.
Morrissey arrived on the scene, where he
saw the officer speaking to Magen Ledford,
22. Her friend Bryanna Duggar, 18, came
out of the trailer and repeatedly told officers
there was no one illegally in the residence.
Not believing the woman, officers waited
for a search warrant. While they waited, they
got Zachary Hill, 25, out of the house and
handcuffed him. A check of his shoe prints
put him at the scene, despite Hill’s insistence
that he was “there but didn’t do anything.
The officers also found the owner of the
trailer, who said she had family members
living there. Needless to say, the suspects
were not her relatives. Moreover, when the
search warrant was signed, officers found the
suspects’ clothes inside the house, complete
with fresh mud stains.
Ledford and Hill face attempted burglary
charges, and Duggar, who police say laughed
throughout her entire booking process,
has an accessory charge. Hill also has a
conspiracy charge against him.
All are free on bond and have court set for 9 a.m. May 22.

Roderick Smith
Roderick Lynn Smith was
convicted of killing his wife,
Jennifer Smith, and her four
children, Shameka Nicole
Carter, 10; Glen Edward Carter
Jr., 9; Ladarian J. Carter, 7;
and Kenesha R. Carter, 6, in
1993 in Canadian County.
Convicted in 1994, Smith was
handed fi ve death sentences.
Prosecutors say he killed his
wife during an argument
and then killed the children
because they were witnesses.
Jennifer Smith and her sons
were stabbed; her daughters were strangled.
During the sentencing phase, jurors heard from a former
girlfriend of Roderick Smith’s who was stabbed by him about
30 times in 1986. For that crime, Smith pleaded guilty to
assault and battery and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Defense attorneys say Smith has a brain disorder that
triggers violent episodes.
Smith has been on death row since November 14, 1994.
On May 7, oral arguments will begin before the Oklahoma
Court of Criminal Appeals alleging Smith’s death sentence
should be thrown out because the Oklahoma County jury did
not consider evidence of Smith’s alleged mental retardation.

A Newcastle teenager’s broken
headlight gave him a bad night on
April 14.
Just before 4 a.m. that day,
officer Michael McNally reported
seeing a white Ford with the
passenger side headlight out at
the 200 block of Northeast 24th
Street. McNally initiated a stop
and approached the passenger’s
side.
When McNally knocked on the
door, Stephen Earnheart, 18, told
him to open the door. However,
when the officer opened it, he saw
a clear glass pipe with black residue in a side pocket of the door,
as well as a white pill in a cigarette wrapper on the passenger’s
side.
Earnheart exited the Ford and, when asked about the pipe,
said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He also said he
didn’t take any prescribed medication, but McNally found a pill
of oxycodone and another of soma in the vehicle.
Earnheart was then arrested on a complaint of possession of
controlled substances and possession of paraphernalia. The
contraband was removed during a search of the vehicle.
Earnheart posted a $4,500 bond April 18. He has two pending
drug-related cases in Grady County, from 2012 and February
2013, records show. In the first, he faces a misdemeanor marijuana
charge, and he has been free on a $1,500 bond since Dec. 13. The
second, a felony, alleges he had morphine in his possession. He
posted a $5,000 bond for that case Feb. 25.
He has court set for 9 a.m. June 28 in McClain County and July
10 in Grady County.

What you’re saying
about this on...
Winnie B: The officials must be planning to
run for government office. None others are as
stupid!!!
Haley A: So was he supposed to let the
bear attack him then call for help granted he
should’ve called the wild life people first but
really people he’s 76 like this man means any
harm
Becca W: ridiculous! so the make my day
law protects us from human attack but we
can’t defend ourselves against rampaging
beasts?! wtf!
Kelli O: Crazy!
Elissa T: This is ridiculous-that man was
well within his right to protect himself on
his own property-what the hell is that state
thinking-if i were the officials involved in that
state in this case id be so ASHAMED-so glad
I’m an Okie-that crap wouldn’t happen hereDarla B: OMG!!!
Brandy M: OMG poor old guy
Margaret T: thats crazy leave the man
alone he was in the right!!!!
Tasha T: So now we aren’t even allowed to
defend ourselves with getting arrested???????
Evan W: THATS BULLS**T!!!!!
Ashley N: Omg its a freaking bear... Lol who
cares... ugh...nice going America... yea... lets
choose obama.... one more time... ugh idiots!
Melvin M: Hell saved his Own Life !!
Kevin C: Thats what they get for electing the
liberal idiots is all i can say
Shawna A: Wow just shows how (beeped)
up the government is and let’s start making
BIRD feeder illegal because it leads to
shooting wild animals that are chasing you in
trying to kill you makes me think would the
bear be in jail if he had killed the man????
Sherida E: Omgoodness how crazy he was
protecting hisself.
Amber V: Ridiculous
Michele H: Everyone that lives around
bears knows that birdseed is NOT OK! That
is their favorite food. I guess if you have never
lived with them this may sound stupid. But
I have and this guy sounds stupid to me!
Of course the guy knew. So, yes, it is called
baiting. He is in the bears habitat and has to
take precautions!
John F: That’s is the dumbest thing I have
heard I would have done the same thing
Peewee M: Need to shoot some idiots with
some common sense. Meat is baiting to.
Don’t cook on your grill there. You are just
trying to kill a bear. Damn idiot
John F: He was in his YARD NOT IN THE
BEARS HABITAT 90% of all animal attacks
r done around homes look it up my has bird
feeders so she can watch birds not bears
Brandi M: I never knew bears like BIRD
seed, that ridiculous. The bear could have had
rabies and was attacking him. I’m an animal
person but if it was after me or my familly id
have shot it also. If he really wanted to kill it
he would have put poison in his “bait”.
Kyle T: He walked out knowing the bear was
there, brought a shotgun, he intended to kill
it the whole time. I like how this story makes
him out to be the victim.
A 76-year-old Auburn, Massachusetts man, Richard Ahlstrand,
had spotted a black bear in his backyard around his bird feeders.
He went to fill up his bird feeders, and as a precaution, he took
his shotgun. Sure enough, the black bear showed up and started
to chase the old man. The man aimed his shotgun at the bear
and shot it, killing the bear.
Now he’s facing charges for illegally killing the bear, illegally
baiting the bear, illegal possession of a firearm and failure to
secure a weapon. Because he “murdered” the bear, police confiscated his shotgun as well as
two others he had in his possession. Ahlstrand pointed out the idiocy of his elected officials:
“They got me set up now like I’m some kind of murderer. And then the environmental guy
told me, ‘You should have called me instead of shooting it.’ What was I going to do, say ‘Mister
Bear, would you excuse me please while I go make a phone call?’”
Authorities thought that the bear may have had cubs, but as Ahlstrand hadn’t shot the bear,
he may not be here today. He was sure it would have at least mauled him. Ahlstrand recalled
that the bear was about 7 feet tall when it stood on its hind legs, and he estimated it weighed
around 300 or 400 pounds.
Officials say the man “baited” the bear with birdseed... Because we all know that bird seed is
only used to bait bears.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE dui PUBLIC INTOX
Members of the Oklahoma House of Representatives today unanimously approved a bill
targeting welfare fraud in Oklahoma.
Senate Bill 456, by state Sen. Josh Brecheen
and state Rep. Arthur Hulbert, is designed to
help reduce fraud in Oklahoma by requiring
every county office of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to post information
on how people can report fraud through a tollfree hotline and that they can do so anonymously.
“Fraud by anyone is a lie that costs our state
money and diverts funds away from those that
truly need it,” said Hulbert, R-Fort Gibson. “I
enjoyed working with Senator Josh Brecheen
on this legislation and am pleased with the
overwhelming bipartisan support it has received.”
Brecheen encouraged Oklahomans to report fraud to the Oklahoma Department of Human
Services.
“Public assistance fraud costs Oklahoma taxpayers millions of dollars every year. This is an
issue that negatively impacts all Oklahomans but DHS simply doesn’t have the workforce to
constantly check up on the thousands of public assistance recipients in our state. They need
the public’s help by being vigilant in their communities and reporting suspected fraud,” said
Brecheen, R-Coalgate. “As legislators and citizens, it’s our duty to be good stewards of tax
dollars and this bill will help ensure that assistance goes to families who truly qualify and that
funds aren’t allocated through fraudulent means.”
The legislation was developed in consultation with and the support of the DHS Office of
Inspector General. Such signage has been printed and dispensed sporadically before but displaying it has never been a statutory requirement for county DHS offices. The emphasis on
anonymity encourages people to report fraud without fearing for their employment or personal relationships, Brecheen said.
The legislation was approved by a 95-0 vote in the Oklahoma House of Representatives and
previously by a 41-0 vote in the Oklahoma Senate.
It now advances to the desk of Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin.
