Things can get ugly when a repo man goes after an Oklahoma
man’s truck. And on Sept. 5, a Lindsay man demonstrated just
how crazy when he allegedly threatened the repo man with a gun
and rammed the repo man’s vehicle with a truck.
According to the affidavit, a Lindsay police officer was dispatched
to a residence regarding a report of a hit and run collision. When
he arrived, he spoke with the victims, a repo man and his mother.
The repo man said that he went to a Lindsay residence to repossess a truck from Robert Edward Smith, 49, and Smith apparently
went crazy. He threatened the victims with a pistol and physical
violence and pursued them after they left the residence with the
repossessed vehicle. The repo man said that Smith passed them at
a high rate of speed and swerved in their attempt, striking it in an attempt to cause harm.
The officer went to Smith’s residence and saw a truck parked in a neighbor’s back yard
with a destroyed side view mirror and shattered glass in the passenger side floorboard. The
neighbors said that Smith had parked the vehicle in their yard and ran into his residence.
The officers went to Smith’s residence; the owner of the residence told them that Smith
was hiding in the back. The officers located Smith and placed him under arrest.
Next time, just pay your bills Smith.
Smith is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. His bond was
set at $5,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 1, 2013
Goin’ crazy on the repo man

Death row execution
Anthony Banks
Anthony Banks was executed
September 10, 2013. In July,
he waived his right to seek
clemency from the state
Pardon and Parole Board.
“I can’t express the terrible
things I’ve done. I’m sorry,”
Banks reportedly said before
his execution. “To know that
I took lives hurts me. This is
justifi ed. I’ve done one good
thing in my life and that is to
become a Jehovah’s Witness.
For that, I’m eternally
grateful.”
Banks was convicted in the 1979 rape and murder of
Sun I. Kim Travis in Tulsa County. The conviction came
20 years after the crime because of newly discovered
DNA evidence. Banks had been serving a no-parole life
sentence for an unrelated killing in which he originally
had been sentenced to death. An appeal reversed that
conviction, and he made a plea bargain to avoid death.
A co-defendant, Allen Wayne Nelson, received a life
sentence.
Banks and Nelson were charged in August 1997 when
the DNA of both men was detected in evidence found on
the victim.
Banks has been on death row since November 14, 1999.

A Wynnewood couple was arrested after a job termination sent
both of them running for the bottle.
On Sept. 6, Garvin County sheriff’s deputies responded to GW
Animal Park on report of an intoxicated person, the affidavit states.
One of the deputies arrived shortly after the other one and asked
a woman where her comrade was. The female, later identified as
Anita Rusko, 18, seemed disoriented and told the deputy, “Oklahoma sure is hot.”
The other deputy walked out from behind a fence with a male,
identified as Robert Kelly Hurd, 45. Hurd had a strong odor of an
alcoholic beverage, had slurred speech and was “walking at an angle
sideways.”
The deputy told Hurd he was under arrest for public intoxication,
but Hurd wasn’t having any of that. He head-butted the deputy and
attempted to run. The deputy swiftly took Hurd to the ground.
As another deputy was questioning Rusko, Hurd kicked him in
the leg and screamed at Rusko not to answer any questions.
Rusko also smelled like alcohol and had trouble forming a complete sentence. She was placed under arrest for public intoxication.
Rusko wasn’t deterred though; she kept trying to interrupt the deputy’s conversation with the reporting party. She was warned that if
she didn’t stop, she would be charged with obstructing an officer.
The reporting party told police that Hurd had been terminated
from employment from the park earlier in the day. Hurd kept coming back to the park and causing problems because he had been
drinking.
Hurd continued his rampage by kicking rocks and spitting at the deputies. A deputy that
had a cage in his patrol car was called to contain Hurd. After Hurd was placed into the car,
he started kicking out the window. Deputies placed Hurd in leg restraints, but not before he
managed to kick one of them.
The crazed couple was transported to jail.
Rusko is being charged with obstructing an officer and public intoxication. Her bond was
set at $706 and she is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 16, 2013.
Hurd is being charged with two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, prisoner
placing body fluid on government employee and public intoxication. His bond was set at
$10,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 18, 2013.

Mark Gregory Valdez, a 33-year-old inmate at the
Oklahoma County Jail, incurred an additional charge
when officers found a loaded handgun hidden inside his
rectum.
According to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office,
Valdez was being held at the Oklahoma County Jail on
a minor charge when a fellow inmate told authorities
that Valdez had been bragging about a handgun that he
managed to sneak into jail.
After turning Valdez’ cell inside out looking for the
firearm, officers conducted a body cavity search. That’s
when officers found a loaded Derringer pistol hidden
inside Valdez’ rectum.
Investigators say Valdez was taken to a local hospital
after the gun was removed. The gun was found in operational condition and loaded
with a single round of ammunition.
Investigators say Valdez submitted to a pat-down search when he was booked
into jail, but somehow managed to be processed without passing through a metal
detector.

FACT:
It is common for both child and adult victims of
sexual assault to wait some time before telling
someone about the abuse.
True. It is common for victims of sexual assault
to wait some time before telling someone. When the
person was assaulted as a child, he or she may wait
years or decades. The reasons for this are numerous:
victims may want to deny the fact that someone they
trusted could do this to them; they may want to just
put it behind them; they may believe the myth that
they caused the assault by their behavior; or they may
fear how other people will react to the truth.

An Ardmore man faces a felony assault charge after hit
an officer with a stolen vehicle.
Alfred Epps, Jr., 24, was charged Sept. 9 with assault
and battery with a dangerous weapon, falsely personate
another to create liability, possession of a CDS, and possession of marijuana, in Carter County District court.
According to reports, the Carter County Sheriff’s Office
received a call Sept. 6 about a stolen vehicle. On Sunday,
Deputy Josh Robinson spotted the stolen vehicle two miles
north of Springer in the area of Vermont Road. I report
had come in to the office about a vehicle with its lights on
in a field there.
Robinson approached the car in the field, but it then
suddenly swerved and plowed into the deputy’s driver’s side door. Robinson was
forced to fire his weapon and hit Epps in the butt.
Epps’ injuries were not life-threatening, but he was transported to the Mercy ER.
After he was released from the hospital, Epps was transported to the Carter County
jail. Bond was set at $100,000 and his preliminary conference is set for Oct. 15.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services

Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children,
taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children
receive public assistance and their parents pay no child support,
all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

Well, the temperatures are
dropping, and fall is almost here,
and these things signal the start
of football season in Oklahoma! Not only have our major colleges
had their first home games, but all across the state, people are
traveling to and from football games from 4th graders on up to high
school. With that in mind, here are a few tips to make this football
season safe.
Lets start with college. Whether you are a Sooner, Cowboy, or
Golden Hurricane fan, one thing is for sure...you aren’t alone! There
are thousands of fans for each home game traveling to the
stadiums. This volume of traffic demands your consideration. First,
if you can, leave early! The closer to game time, the worse the traffic
gets, so if you can, get to the stadium early. There are plenty of
things on a game day that are going on prior to kickoff that you can
spend your time enjoying. There are usually lots of free stuff for the
kids to do that make the whole game day experience wonderful for
them as well.
Second, be patient! You WILL run into traffic, so plan ahead, and
don’t get frustrated with it. Turn on the radio, listen to the pregame hype, and remember to be a safe, courteous driver. Getting
frustrated, and getting into a hurry, can result in a traffic accident
that will delay your arrival, and could end up being very expensive,
not to mention the potential for injury.
Last, be aware that there are usually some temporary traffic
control changes on game days. Both before and after the games,
law enforcement will be at intersections controlling the traffic
lights, and making adjustments to keep the traffic flowing in the
best possible manner. Be alert and aware, and recognize when and
where these temporary traffic controls are taking place!
Now, on to the local games! The biggest thing I remember from
growing up is that parents are usually running late to get to games,
because of what time they got off work. This has not changed... we
Troopers are stopping folks who are speeding trying to get to a kid’s
ball game all the time. While we understand, (we have kids too!)
we also see all too often what happens when accidents happen as
a result of unsafe speed. If you get stopped by us, you’re going to
be even later, and possibly on the hook for a hefty fine. If you get
involved in an accident, you may not make the game at all.
Finally, when you do get there, be a good fan! Cheer your team,
don’t denigrate the other team. Use appropriate language in the
stands; remember, there are kids of all ages in the stands with you.
We Oklahomans love our football, just remember to show your
support in a positive way!
Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

A mother and her son, both of Wayne, were arrested after police found drugs and
drug paraphernalia in their home.
A deputy with the McClain County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence for a
reported domestic disturbance. According to the affidavit, when he arrived, he saw
two subjects yelling at each other. The subjects were identified as Shana Denise
Lack, 43, and her son Ethan Reice Meeks, 18.
Lack told the deputy that Meeks had just wrecked the house and punched holes in
the wall. The deputy noticed that Meeks had bloody knuckles; he asked Meeks what
had happened and Meeks told him that he tore up the house because his mom stole
$400 from him.
The deputy placed Meeks in investigative detention and went inside the home to
assess the damage.
The deputy saw numerous holes in the walls and doors, as well as broken pictures
and other items. While walking through the home, the deputy walked inside a bedroom and saw a soda bottle and chrome socket that had been converted for smoking
marijuana.. Both items had a burnt residue and smelled like marijuana.
Lack told the deputy that the room was her son’s room.
The deputy for permission to search the residence; Lack told him, “No, I will lose
my house.”
Lack became agitated and upset; the deputy decided to obtain a search warrant
before searching the rest of the home.
After obtaining the warrant, the deputy returned to the residence. He found evidence of drug use in Lack’s bedroom, including a syringe, a bent spoon, a small baggie containing a white
powdery substance and a device with a green leafy substance inside of it. The substances later tested positive for marijuana and meth.
In Meeks’ bedroom, the deputy found more drug paraphernalia.
Meeks told the deputy that the items found in his room belonged to him but any meth found in the home
was not his. Meeks said that his mother used methamphetamine on a regular basis.
Mom and son were transported to jail.
Meeks is being charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on a personal recognizance bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 13, 2013.
Lack is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substances and unlawful possession of
drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $5,000 and she is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 16, 2013.

Robert Pry, a 21-year-old Arkansas man, was jailed after he
allegedly spent the night inside a Kmart huffing 16 cans of air
duster.
According to Jonesboro Police, officers were dispatched to a
local Kmart store early Sept. 1 morning after employees found
Pry asleep inside a storage room.
Officers arrived to find two feet sticking out from a cubby hole
underneath a set of stairs. Those feet belonged to Pry, who was
covered with his own urine and vomit.
Pry told officers that he entered the store just before closing time
and hid out until the employees left. That’s when he commenced
huffing 16 cans of air duster. The empty cans were found scattered
about the room where Pry was found unconscious.
Pry also stated that he borrowed a friend’s truck, drove to a
nearby Walmart, and purchased $100 worth of air duster. Officers located the truck where
they found several more empty air duster cans.
Investigators say Pry spent “all of his money” on air dusters, but wanted more. He later
told police that he was “addicted to huffing.”
Pry was taken to a local hospital before he was booked into the Craighead County
Detention Center. He was charged with commercial burglary, theft, inhaling intoxicating
compounds and failure to appear. His bond has been set at $1,700.

When the kids are away, the mom
will play, or however the saying goes.
A Norman mother was arrested on a
Friday afternoon while her children
were in school for driving under the
influence of prescription drugs.
On Aug. 30, a Blanchard police officer saw Tina Renae Kelly, 32, driving
west on Hwy 62 in Blanchard when
she hit a vehicle in front of her at a
stoplight. The officer made contact
with Kelly and noticed that she appeared to be under the influence of a substance, the affidavit states. Her speech was slurred
and she was having trouble keeping her balance.
The officer asked Kelly what she was under the influence of
and she told him that she had taken two Xanax and one Loratab.
He asked her if she knew what day it was; she replied that it
was Thursday, Aug. 28. He then asked her if she knew what time
it was and she told him that it was dinner time.
Since she struck out twice, the officer placed Kelly under arrest. She agreed to take a blood test, but when they arrived at
the hospital, Kelly could not stay awake.
She asked the officer to notify her parents that she had been
arrested; she needed them to pick up her children from school
since she wasn’t going to be able to.
Kelly is being charged with driving under the influence. Her
bond was set at $2,000 and she is scheduled to appear in court
on Oct. 30, 2013.

Investigating offi cers tracked the bag and receipt
to a Livingston store, where video from a surveillance
camera showed a group of teenage boys purchasing
eggs and toilet paper.
Raney tells the Livingston Enterprise the boys,
ages 15 and 16, were referred to the juvenile
probation offi cer.
An Ohio man has been cited for public
drunkenness and criminal trespass for a notso-great effort to commandeer a freight train in
northwestern Pennsylvania.
Police say 28-year-old Robert Nerone Jr., of
Jefferson, Ohio, somehow hopped aboard the
eastbound CSX train in Ashtabula, Ohio and moved
car to car as the train slowed to a stop in Millcreek
Township. That’s in Pennsylvania, just outside of
Erie, about 120 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Millcreek police Capt. Randy Faipler tells the
Erie Times-News that Nerone reached the train’s
main engine and banged on the windows, telling the
engineer and conductor he was commandeering the
train about 3:30 a.m.
Online court records don’t list an attorney for
Nerone, who doesn’t have a listed phone.
There are people who feel the way some motorists
park should be a crime. In this case, it was - sort of.
Police in New York State say a man wanted on a
probation violation ended up being arrested because
he parked so poorly.
A state police investigator spotted a man as he
tried to back his vehicle into a parking space at a
truck stop in Rotterdam, New York.
Police say the investigator took note of the man
because he parked crookedly, taking up two spaces
in the process.
When the man walked away, he recognized
Matthew Bergeron from previous arrests - and knew
he was a suspect in a burglary and was wanted on
outstanding warrants in a neighboring county.
He was taken into custody without incident - and
sent to jail.
That’s something you might not want to post on
Facebook.
The online message said the pot dealer would
be in a store parking lot in a black and silver Ford
Taurus for anyone who wanted to buy.
Police in Bemidji, Minnesota, went looking for the
pot dealer.
But a local paper reports offi cers didn’t fi nd
anyone.
The pot sale notice was posted on a community
for-sale page.
The man who set up the page says police asked
that the marijuana listing be left up, so offi cers could
try to catch the dealer.

August 23, 2009, Reverend Carol
Daniels made her weekly trip from her
home in Oklahoma City to the Christ
Holy Sanctifi ed Church in Anadarko.
Most Sundays no one attended services,
as many parishioners were elderly.
However, she didn’t miss an opportunity
to share her faith with others.
Between 10 o’clock that morning, when
Daniels arrived at the church, and noon,
when police offi cers found her body,
someone murdered Daniels by stabbing
her multiple times in the upper body. The
Anadarko Police Department requested
OSBI assistance with the case.
For months, OSBI investigative agents,
crime scene agents, criminal analysts, and Anadarko police offi cers
gathered evidence and information involving the case. Agents have
traveled across the United States following leads. Eventually, investigators
exhausted their list of leads. Even though many other murder cases have
occurred since Daniels’, her case has always remained a priority.
Little more than a year ago, OSBI assigned a well-seasoned agent
to focus solely on cold cases as an OSBI Special Investigator. With his
extensive experience in investigating violent crimes across the state and
without a formal caseload as an OSBI Agent, this Special Investigator
has helped resolve two cold cases and aided in developing viable leads
in several other cases. He has recently been assigned to help agents
investigating the Carol Daniels’ case.
The OSBI wishes every murder could be solved quickly so victims’
families can experience some level of justice. Even with today’s
advancements in forensic technology, proving a person’s guilt in a
homicide case is a formidable task when an abundance of evidence is
available. Unfortunately, some homicide cases yield little evidence and
often may lack credible information.
The OSBI’s goal in every case is to bring the guilty to justice and to
provide support to families of murder victims.
If anyone has information on the Carol Daniels’ homicide case, please
call the OSBI hotline at 1-800-522-8017.

GREEN CARD ROMEO
Broken Arrow police arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting
two nursing home patients.
The women are 93 and 80 years old, and are patients at Franciscan
Villa in Broken Arrow. Police say what helped in their investigation is
how quickly the staff there contacted police.
Police say Uqbasilassie Zerie admitted to sexually assaulting the two
women several times over the past six or seven months. They say the
situation came to light when one of his co-workers saw something
unusual.
“She goes into the elderly patient’s room, turns on the light and sees
the suspect pulling up his pants,” said Cpl. Leon Calhoun, of the Broken Arrow Police
Department.
The staff at Franciscan Villa called police that very day, September 11, 2013.
The next day when Zerie came into work, the staff says he admitted assaulting the woman
in that room.
Officers say, when they interviewed him, he also admitted to assaulting the second victim.
Zerie’s Facebook page says he worked for St. John, the company that owns the Villa, but
he didn’t say what his job was.
Zerie’s not listed as a licensed nurse on the state’s website.
Police say that early reporting was key.
“It’s better to get out there and verify there’s not a problem than to be called after the fact
and miss a chance to prosecute someone, because there’s no evidence or he’s gotten out of
the area,” Calhoun said.
Police say the suspect is working in this country on a green card from East Africa. They
say he’s been working in the Broken Arrow area for the past two years. Now, he faces five
counts of sexual assault.

A Marietta man faces three
criminal and three traffic charges
after what would have been a routine traffic stop Sept. 13.
Just before 7 p.m. that day,
Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Jonathan Vargas pulled over a
1977 blue Chevrolet near Oswalt
Road and Long Hollow. Once
the car pulled over, Vargas spoke
with Shawn Shelton, 21. A check
of his information showed he
didn’t have valid insurance, and
the car didn’t have proper tags, either, which prompted
Vargas to ask more questions.
After further evaluation of Shelton’s car, Vargas determined he was operating it unsafely. He eventually
searched the car, which revealed Shelton was driving
around with methamphetamine in the car. Worse still,
Vargas reported Shelton was driving while high, complete with a recently used methamphetamine pipe sitting
in his lap.
Shelton faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of drugs, possession
of drug paraphernalia, driving in an unsafe condition,
failure to comply with insurance and failure to pay taxes.
He has court set for 9 a.m. Oct. 25 and remains in custody
on bonds totaling $6,500.
Is that a meth pipe,
or are you just
happy to see me?
