Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty GARVIN COUNTY 3 | OCTOBER 2022
REPEAT OFFENDER
A 42-year-old Oklahoma City man allegedly choked, pistol-whipped, and held a gun to
his girlfriend’s head while in Garvin County.
According to reports, Lindsay police officers were dispatched to a residence where
they found a woman crying. She had bruises
on her arms and forehead. The physical altercation occurred on September 16.
The woman told police she had been dating Charles Anthony Smith since earlier this
year. She said things had been becoming
more physical since then. The woman said
Smith became angry at her. He pulled her hair
and hit her with a fist.
The next day, Smith pulled the woman’s
hair and hit her with his fist again. That night,
the woman said Smith threw her to the floor and kicked her in the ribs, back,
and legs. He also put a knee on her chest and choked her until she could
barely breathe.
That same night, the woman was sitting outside on the front steps of the
residence. Smith approached her and put the barrel of a pistol up against
her left temple. He then pistol-whipped the right side of her head. Smith also
allegedly stole the woman’s car keys so she couldn’t go anywhere.
Officers later located and arrested the man in Oklahoma City.
Court reports state Smith is a convicted felon after he was found guilty in a
2020 domestic abuse case.
Smith is being charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation,
assault, battery, or assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, feloniously
pointing a firearm, and possession of firearm after the former conviction of a
felony. His bond was set at $20,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court
on October 14, 2022.

AROUND THE COUNTRY
Authorities said the 5-year-old child of a second
suspect drew on police with a loaded shotgun as
his mother was being taken into custody.
A would-be robber pretending to be a stranded
motorist killed a Florida college student who had
pulled his own weapon in self-defense during a
gunfight in Alabama, authorities said.
Adam Simjee, 22, and his girlfriend, Mikayla Paulus — both students at the University of Central
Florida — were driving through Talladega National Forest near Cheaha State Park when they were
flagged down Sunday by suspect Yasmine Hider,
the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Hider said her car had broken down and when
the victims offered their help, she “produced a gun
and made the couple walk back into the woods,”
according to the sheriff.
Simjee then pulled his concealed handgun and
wounded Hider “multiple times” before he too was
shot and then died at the scene, the sheriff said.
Paulus, who was not wounded in the shootout,
called 911 and told authorities there was another
woman with Hider. Searchers eventually found the
suspects’ camp about a half-mile away, where they
had been “living off the grid,” according to the sheriff’s statement.
That’s where police officers and deputies found
second suspect Krystal Diane Pinkins and her young child.
“As officers were ordering the female to the ground a 5-year-old child ran
from the woods holding a loaded shotgun,” the sheriff said. “Law enforcement told the child to put the shotgun down however the child continued to
the female’s location before laying the gun on the ground.”

6 | OCTOBER 2022 Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty LOVE COUNTY
NORTH TO MEXICO
A Texas man was taken into custody after he led
officers on a high-speed chase along I-35 from Texas
and into Oklahoma. He later told police he was heading to Mexico.
Daniel Diaz-Trujillo, 27, of Grand Prairie, Texas,
was charged September 9 with endangering others
while eluding/attempting to elude police officer and
possession of CDS- marijuana, in Love County District Court.
A press release by Love County Sheriff Cumberledge stated that on September 2, just after
10:30 a.m., law enforcement in Love County was
advised that Cooke County and Texas DPS were in
active pursuit of a vehicle and that they were entering
into Love County on I-35.
Deputies, along with Marietta PD Officers, set up
on I-35 at Exit 15 in Marietta in an attempt to intercept.
At approximately the 13.5 mile marker, the suspect, later identified as Diaz-Trujillo,
threw drugs out of his window and continued on at speeds over 95 mph. Deputies,
along with Marietta PD, intercepted the pursuit at the 15 mile marker. When the pursuit
reached the 16.5 mile marker, the suspect vehicle ran an 18-wheeler and a passenger SUV off the roadway. At this point law enforcement determined that if the pursuit
continued, innocent motorists could be in danger, so a pit maneuver or TVI (tactical
vehicle intervention) was initiated. The TVI was successful and the vehicle wrecked out
into the center median.
Law enforcement then took Diaz-Trujillo into custody without further incident. He
appeared to be highly intoxicated and stated to officers that he was headed to Mexico.
Diaz-Trujillo was booked into the Love County Justice Center. The investigation in
this case is on going and could result in further charges.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in court.
“Thank you to all of the Law Enforcement agencies that assisted in this pursuit:
Cooke County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Thackerville
Police Department, Lighthorse Police Department, Marietta Police Department, and
YOUR Love County Sheriff’s Office. We are thankful that no one was seriously injured
due to this suspects reckless behavior,” Sheriff Cumberledge said.

AROUND THE STATE
A multi-agency investigation has resulted in one of the largest methamphetamine seizures in state history. Mark Woodward, Spokesman for
the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, says an investigation began in July
targeting a drug trafficking organization moving large quantities of meth
from Mexico into central and southern Oklahoma.
“The investigation led to Search Warrants being served this week at several locations where shipments of meth were being stored upon arrival in
Oklahoma.” ---Mark Woodward, OBN Spokesman
Woodward says the Search Warrants resulted in the seizure of 589
pounds of meth with a street value of nearly $3 million. Woodward says
this is one of the largest meth seizures in state history. Additionally, four
firearms were seized, and five individuals have been arrested. Woodward
says more arrests are expected as this investigation remains ongoing.
“The significance of this seizure cannot be overstated as meth continues
to kill more Oklahomans than any other drug. This seizure of nearly 270
kilos of meth no doubt saved countless lives throughout our state.” ---
OBN Director Donnie Anderson
Agencies assisting in the investigation include the Oklahoma Bureau of
Narcotics, the Ardmore Police Department, the US Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

AMERICA’S DEADLIEST SHOOTINGS
ARE ONES WE DON’T TALK ABOUT
On any given day in America, an average of 63 of our mothers,
brothers, partners, and friends are taken from us by gun suicide.
But tomorrow’s deaths could be prevented. Give your loved ones
a second chance at life. Store your guns safely: locked, unloaded,
and away from ammo.

October is National Domestic
violence Awareness Month
The following is a list of early
warning signs that someone may
be abusive. This list was put together by survivors of domestic
violence who reflected on the early
phases of the battering relationship
and identified some of the early
warning signs of abusers.
Someone who:
• Wants to move too quickly into the relationship.
• Does not honor your boundaries.
• Is excessively jealous and accuses you of having affairs.
• Wants to know where you are all of the time and frequently calls, emails and texts
you throughout the day.
• Criticizes you or puts you down; most commonly tells you that you are “crazy,”
“stupid” and/or “fat,” or that no one would ever want or love you.
• Says one thing and does another.
• Takes no responsibility for their behavior and blames others.
• Has a history of battering.
• Blames the entire failure of previous relationships on their partner; for example,
“My ex was a total bitch.”
• Grew up in an abusive or violent home.
• Insists that you stop spending time with your friends or family.
• Seems “too good to be true.”
• Insists that you stop participating in leisure interests.
• Rages out of control and is impulsive.
Pay attention to the “red flags “and trust your instincts. Survivors of domestic violence frequently report that their instincts told them that there was something wrong
early on but they disregarded the warning signs and didn’t know that these signs were
indicative of an abusive relationship. Always take time to get to know a potential partner and watch for patterns of behavior in a variety of settings. Keeping in touch with
your support system and participating in good self-care can lower your risk of being
involved in an abusive relationship.

FORENSIC GENETIC GENEALOGY HELPS
IDENTIFY WOMAN WITH STARBURST TATTOO
On August 31, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) announced
that a woman found partially
buried on August 31, 2008
near Lake Thunderbird is
identified as Angela Mason.
Mason, who was 25 at the
time, was found partially
decomposed in a shallow
grave at 120th and Alameda. She was discovered
by several fishermen, and
a Park Ranger requested
OSBI assistance with the investigation.
“It is a great day when we can give a victim their name back,” said Aungela
Spurlock, OSBI Director. “Utilizing Forensic Genetic Genealogy is an investment
and is unfortunately not possible to use on every cold case. But for Angela, the
investment paid off. Now our team will continue to work to get Angela the justice
she deserves.”
In August 2021, having exhausted all investigative leads, retiring Director Ricky
Adams approved the case for genetic genealogy testing. Criminalists from the
OSBI Forensic Science Center sent DNA from Mason’s remains to Parabon Nanolabs in an effort to locate relatives. Parabon returned results in March of 2022
identifying a possible relative. Special Agents contacted the relative and asked for
a DNA sample to compare to the victim. The results came back positively identifying Anglea Mason as the deceased. With this critical information, OSBI agents
and analysts have intensified their investigative efforts to determine what happened
to Mason.
Numerous attempts had been made since Mason was found to identify her
including releasing images of her distinctive tattoo, entering her information into
the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), adding her case
to the OSBI Cold Case Cards, reaching out to other departments to review their
missing persons cases, and releasing forensic sketches. The most recent sketch
was released in May 2021 and utilized advanced composite software to generate
an image.
At the time Mason’s remains were located, the Medical Examiner believed the
remains were those of a white female, possibly with Native American heritage, who
was approximately 5’5”, between 30 and 45 years old, and had at least one child.
ME investigators believed she had been buried in the shallow grave between three
and 15 months prior to her discovery.
Mason was 5’6” and was a registered citizen of the Cherokee Nation. She attended Putnam City West High School, was married once, and had four children.
She was last seen in Moore, Oklahoma in the spring of 2008.
Special Agents from the OSBI are investigating her death as a homicide. Agents
returned to the location where Mason was found in June 2022 to reprocess the
scene. At that time, they located and collected additional evidence.
If you knew Angela Marie (Richards) Mason or have any information on her
death, please contact the OSBI at (800) 522-8017 or email [email protected]. You
can remain anonymous.

HOMETOWN HEROES!
On September 7th, 2022, Purcell Officer
Dalton Rivera and Officer Joshua Miller were
awarded life saving awards from the Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police.
On November 24th, 2021, at 4:32 a.m.,
both responded to a call of an unresponsive
female. Officer Rivera, who was off duty at
the time but near the location, responded
with Officer Miller. When they discovered the
apartment the female was in, Officer Miller left
a flashlight outside the doorway to aid medical responders to locate them quickly. They
discovered the female wasn’t breathing.
Officer Miller cleared the area around the
female and Officer Rivera began giving the
female CPR. Medical arrived on scene shortly after and took over conducting lifesaving
measures.
After the Chief of Emergency Medical Service reviewed the lead Medic’s report of the
incident he stated “Undoubtedly these officers saved the patients life. This patient survived the incident due to the officers rapid response to the scene. Without their action the
patients chance of survival would have been
greatly reduced if not eliminated.”
