A Tonkawa man was arrested August 8 after he allegedly stabbed a woman because she asked him to
leave her house.
According to the affidavit, a Tonkawa officer was
dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of North
Summit Street shortly after midnight to investigate
the stabbing. When he arrived, he found a woman
leaning against the wall. There was a pool of blood on
the floor under her, and a man was holding a towel
around her arm. It also appeared that she had been
stabbed in the stomach.
The officer asked her what happened. She said
someone knocked on her door and when she answered it, she saw two men.
The woman identified one of the men as 30-year-old Christopher Lee Lanning. When she saw Lanning, she said she told him to leave her residence.
Lanning then stabbed her with a knife.
Witnesses at the residence verified the victim’s account.
EMS arrived to transport the victim to the hospital, and the officer went
looking for the suspect.
At 1:28 a.m., he was advised that Lanning was at a residence in the 300
block of North 11th Street.
A man at the residence told the officer Lanning was hiding behind the pool
in the backyard. When the officer made his way around back, a man stood up
from behind the pool. The man was Lanning.
The officer placed him under arrest and took him to jail.
Lanning is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. His bond was set at $100,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on
August 21, 2015.

When an officer caught Bartlesville man Joshua
Wayde Howard, 27, in the act of breaking into a house,
the man tried to act like it was his friend’s house.
The problem? The woman who answered the door
had no clue who Howard was!
On August 10, a Bartlesville police officer was on patrol when he saw a man wearing dark clothing and a
large dark backpack standing on the porch of a house in
the 1400 block of Elm shortly after 2 a.m. As the officer
drove by the residence, the man on the porch looked at
him.
The officer circled back around and noticed that the man was no longer wearing
the backpack. He stopped to ask the man, identified as Howard, if he was locked
out of his house. Howard replied, “No, this is my buddy’s house.”
He then gave the officer a name.
The officer asked Howard why he took his backpack off; he didn’t reply. The
officer then asked if he was trying to break into the house. Howard said, “No,
sir.” When the officer asked the man if he could look in his backpack, his body
language changed and he started fidgeting with his hands and clothing.
According to the police report, he should have been nervous!
The officer found a pair of gloves, bolt cutters, two syringes and several items
including a social security cards and credit cards belonging to a woman. The
woman had filed a report the day before because someone broke into her car and
stole her purse.
Howard told the officer he didn’t know the syringes or stolen property was in
his backpack.
The officer then knocked on the door of the house they were at and asked for
the man’s friend.
The woman who answered didn’t know what he was talking about, and she said
she had never seen Howard before.
Howard is being charged with knowingly withholding stolen property and possession of burglary tools. His bond was set at $150,000, and he is scheduled to
appear in court on August 21, 2015.

A Mannford man was busted in Osage County after a tip from a concerned citizen led an
officer to a stolen car and some methamphetamine on August 1.
According to the affidavit, the reporting party
advised that he was riding his 4-wheeler when
he saw several vehicles that had been dumped
in the area of 57th West Avenue and Edison.
The RP thought the vehicles might be stolen.
When an Osage County deputy went to investigate, he found a man standing in front of a truck, working on the
vehicle. The man was identified as 33-year-old Samuel Leslie Borders II.
There were other vehicles in the area that appeared to be stolen,
stripped and dumped, so the deputy placed Borders in handcuffs
until he could figure out what was going on.
Borders told the deputy he was just in the area looking at what had
been thrown away, and he was just looking at the truck the deputy
found him working on.
The officer checked the truck’s tag -- it came back as a stolen Chevy
out of Tulsa.
The problem? The truck was a Ford.
When the officer checked the vehicle’s VIN number, he was advised the truck was stolen out of Broken Arrow.
The deputy inventoried the vehicle, and he found a syringe on the
dashboard with a clear liquid inside. Borders told the deputy the
syringe was his and it contained meth. He added that there was a
brown bag in the front seat that contained some spoons and a vial
of water.
Sure enough, the deputy found the bag inside the vehicle. When
the deputy asked the man if he had stolen the truck, Borders replied,
“Yeah, I took it.” He told the officer he took the tag off of another
vehicle and stuck it on the truck.
Borders is being charged with possession of stolen vehicle, possession of controlled dangerous substance and removing proper or
affixing improper license plate. His bond was set at $10,000, and he
is scheduled to appear in court on August 27, 2015.

the car with a woman who was calling her brother or husband trying to get directions and
I had to sit there and pray that we wouldn’t crash into something! So yea, I’m very happy
to see this law go into effect!

Samuel Elliott Evrett, II, 22, was
arrested during a Pawnee rodeo when
an officer caught him doing something illegal with some underage girls.
The Tulsa man was allegedly drinking
and smoking weed with the girls in
the parking lot.
According to the police report, a
Pawnee officer was patrolling the rodeo grounds parking lot on August
7 when he saw what appeared to be
three juveniles drinking some beer at
the back of a truck around 9:30 p.m.
The officer approached the trio; one
of them tried to hide a beer can from
him. One of the subjects identified himself as Evrett. The other two
subjects were 16 and 17 year-old girls.
Next to one of the girls was a smoking beer can that had been partially crushed. On the side of the can was a partially-burnt dark colored substance.
The officer recognized that the can was being used as a homemade
marijuana smoking pipe. No one tried to deny anything -- they all
three admitted to the officer that they had been smoking marijuana.
One of the girls pulled a baggy of a green leafy substance out of her
purse and handed it to the officer. The substance tested positive for
marijuana.
Evrett told the officer he had purchased the weed earlier that night,
and he gave it to the girl for her to hold. The man also advised that he
was on unsupervised probation.
The officer placed Evrett under arrest and transported him to jail.
Evrett is being charged with aiding minor in drug-related crime.
He was released on a $4,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in
court on August 25, 2015.

There is a saying that all good
things must come to an end. I
would like to think that my
monthly Tips From a Trooper articles have been a good thing, and
hopefully put some good information out there. Alas, this will be
my final installment of Tips. A new chapter has opened up in my
career as an Oklahoma State Trooper, and I will be taking on a
new assignment. It took a lot of thought and prayer to come to the
decision to take on my new assignment, and I thought that process
was worthy of some consideration in this final Tips.
When this opportunity presented itself, obviously it was
something that could not be decided spur of the moment. Usually,
when faced with new opportunities, we can experience either
apprehension or excitement initially. Decisions shouldn’t be made
in either of these conditions. A good piece of advice that I received
a long time ago is to sleep on it. If you have time, and we usually
do, take that time, and see how you feel about the issue 24 hours
later. If you still feel excited, or apprehensive, then those feelings
should be further explored!
A great thing to do when you have a tough decision to make is
the old pros and cons list. This tool is invaluable, and was for me
in my decision! Gather as much information as you can to help
you in making this list. If you have one side of the ledger that is
overwhelmingly longer than the other, then you should seriously
consider what that means, and perhaps decide accordingly!
Talk to your family! Many decisions not only affect you, but your
family as well, so you should get their take on it. Be sure and run
down those pros and cons as they may be able to add to the list. It
is important to have your family involved in those big decisions, as
they will be supporting you whichever way you decide.
Last but not least, pray. I don’t intend this to be a religious
stance, but it is part of who I am, and prayer helped me immensely
in this decision. Whatever your belief system is, seek guidance
through prayer.
After going through this process, I decided to accept an assignment
in the Office of Professional Standards within the Oklahoma
Highway Patrol. Taking this assignment was made much easier
knowing that Troop K and Payne County would be in good hands
with the current Command Staff in Troop K. Thankfully, no move
is required, so my family and I will continue to be part of this great
community! I would like to thank each and every one of the people
I have worked with, both OHP and other agencies. I would also like
to thank everyone who came up and said they enjoyed my articles,
you don’t know how much that meant to me!
