A Poteau woman who said she was on probation was
locked up for stealing numerous items from the EZ Mart
on March 5.
21-year-old Alissa Daun-Alynn Owens begged an officer not to arrest her because she didn’t want to go to
prison.
According to the affidavit, a Poteau officer was dispatched to the store in the 1200 block of North Broadway
shortly after 4 p.m. to investigate the larceny. An employee told him a woman wearing jeans and a tank top
entered the store carrying two pink bags. The employee
said the woman put several phone chargers in her bags
and left the store without paying.
Officers found a woman matching the description of the suspect at the intersection of Grace and Grand Avenue. She was identified as Owens.
An officer asked her if she had stolen anything from EZ Mart. She told him the
only item she had was a phone charger she purchased.
When the officer asked if he could search her bags, she told him only if he had
a search warrant.
Another officer advised her that EZ Mart had a “very good” surveillance system.
She then caved, telling officers she would tell the truth if they didn’t take her to
jail. She said she was on probation, and she didn’t want to go to jail for four years.
Owens pulled out 12 pairs of sunglasses, four USB cables, an audio cable, three
multi cables and five packages of headphones out of her bag.
Officers placed her under arrest and transported her to jail.
During booking, police found a total of 12 pills on Owens’s person. She identified some of the pills as Diazepam.
Owens is being charged with larceny of merchandise from retailer. Her bond
was set at $9,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on March 28, 2016.

Homeless man rewarded with $100,000
for information on fugitives

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – It was customary for
Matthew Hay-Chapman to go to McDonald’s each
day. He lived in a San Francisco park near the fastfood restaurant and would go to get coffee in the
morning.
In January while on his routine walk to get his cup
of Joe, he saw a white van in the nearby Whole Foods
parking lot. It was odd. People appeared to be sleeping inside.
One man got out of the van, and Hay-Chapman recognized him from the newspapers he salvaged from
the garbage cans. It was one of three escaped convicts
from Santa Ana. The whole state was looking for them.
“That’s the dude. That’s got to be the guy,” Hay-Chapman recalled to CNN affiliate KGO
a week after the capture.
Police soon caught Hossein Nayeri after a chase and found Jonathan Tieu still inside the
van.
Questions followed. Would Hay-Chapman, a homeless man, get reward money after
happening on the van?
On Tuesday, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to give him $100,000.
Hay-Chapman told KGO in February that if he got the money, he wanted to start a new
life and help his grown children who have also had struggles. Hay-Chapman, 55, told the
San Francisco station that he has chronic back pain and cannot work.
Nayeri and Tieu, along with Bac Tien Duong, escaped from the maximum-security Orange County men’s jail in Santa Ana. They were caught after nine days on the lam, which
included shopping at Target, going to a hair salon to change their looks, taking a taxi driver
hostage and getting in a physical fight over whether to kill the cabbie.
Duong, who split with the other two escapees, was caught in Santa Ana after calling police to come pick him up.
Authorities had offered a $150,000 reward for information leading to the fugitives’ capture.
Three other people were awarded shares of the other $50,000. The cab driver received
no money.

Horrific Crimes that
Changed America
Kitty Genovese and 9-1-1
One of these crimes occurred exactly 52 years ago on
March 13, 1964. A young woman, Kitty Genovese, was
stalked, stabbed, raped, and murdered. It is speculated
that many of her neighbors heard and/or saw the gruesome crime but neglected to help. Part of the problem
was that at the time of her murder, concerned citizens
had to dial “O” for operator or the local police station
number (there were five different numbers for each of
the five New York City boroughs) and their call would
then be relayed to a communications bureau and then
passed on to the precinct. Only then could a police officer be dispatched to the scene of the crime. This obviously time-consuming process caused severe delays in
response times (some even believe that some of Kitty’s neighbors did call the police during her attack but their calls were either lost or delayed by the insufficient
police communications system of the 1960s).
A few years later in 1967, the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and
Administration of Justice recommended the development of an emergency reporting system that would utilize a single universal number nationwide. On February 16, 1968, the first 9-1-1 call was made in the United States in Haleyville,
Alabama and by 1987, the majority of the American population had access to 9-1-1
emergency service numbers. Today, anyone in the U.S. can easily contact the police with one simple phone call.

A self-proclaimed Bernie Sanders servant was arrested after he
tried to break into a man’s Buffalo
Valley home in the early morning
hours of February 20.
Tuskahoma man Robert Nicholas Mace, 20, told police the Democratic presidential hopeful made
him do it.
According to the police report,
a Latimer County deputy was advised of a breaking and entering in
progress at a residence in Buffalo
Valley behind the BNB store shortly after 4 a.m. When he arrived,
Mace was still on scene and being
held by the victim.
The homeowner told the deputy he was woken up by a man beating on his backdoor. He went to check out the commotion and found
Mace trying to break into his garage.
The victim walked outside to confront the man, but Mace took off
running. He didn’t make it far, though. The victim found him standing between his shop and camper.
He told Mace to come out of his hiding spot.
The man told the deputy Mace then called him names and approached him in an “aggressive manner.” The men started fighting.
The victim was able to subdue the suspect until police arrived. The
deputy placed Mace under arrest.
On the way to jail, Mace told the officer, “I was at that house because I am a Bernie Sanders servant.”
Yeah, that makes perfect sense (not).
Mace is being charged with attempted burglary in the first degree.
He was released on a $1,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in
court on April 19, 2016.

A group of three friends was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a man from a gas station and beating him up on
March 11.
According to the affidavit, a McAlester officer was dispatched to the hospital to meet with the victim on the
day of the assault. He told the officer he walked into EZ
Mart around 5:30 p.m. When he turned to leave, a man
and woman approached him. The man flashed a gun and
told him, “If you want to live today, go with me.”
The victim walked outside. Three assailants forced him
into a truck and drove to the lake where they assaulted
him and took his belongings before leaving him unconscious.
The officer asked the convenience store employee if
she had surveillance footage from when the assault occurred. She said yes, and around that time, a man ran
into the store and told her to call the police. She said she
was too busy to make the call.
Police viewed the video and identified the female suspect as Stewart woman Pandora Elms, 22. On March 13,
police brought her in for questioning. She was high on
meth and had some of the drug in her purse.
Elms admitted she had been at the gas station with her
boyfriend, 23-year-old Donald Gene Belvin of McAlester, and McAlester man Joe Lewis Burns, 36. She said
the victim had stolen some stuff from her, and they were
just trying to get it back.
Police found Burns at a motel in the 1200 block of East
Electric. He said his friends needed a ride, so he picked
them up and took them to the convenience store. He
didn’t know what the couple was planning. Burns said he
was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
When asked why he didn’t call the police, Burns said
he had a short memory problem.
Belvin is being charged with kidnapping, robbery by
force or fear and assault with a deadly weapon. His bond was set at $35,000.
There is an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
Elms is being charged with kidnapping, robbery by force or fear and possession
of controlled dangerous substance.
Burns is being charged with kidnapping and robbery by force or fear. Burns and
Elms are being held in lieu of $50,000 bonds. They are both scheduled to appear
in court on April 29, 2016.

someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money or
favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting
offi cer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.

A few weeks ago, a Roselle, Illinois, police officer saw a car driving southbound on
Roselle Road with a 15-foot tree embedded
in the front grill of the car. After stopping
the driver, he also noticed the airbags had
been deployed (apparently from hitting the
tree). After an investigation, the Roselle officer arrested the driver for Driving Under
the Influence of Alcohol.

Fairland woman Misty Shamblin, 29, was arrested in Checotah after she allegedly threw a
brick at her ex-boyfriend for ending their relationship on March 4.
According to the police report, a Checotah officer was dispatched to the 300 block of NW Fifth
Street at approximately 7:43 p.m. due to a brick
bring thrown through a windshield. He made contact with the victim, who said he broke up with
Shamblin earlier that day. When he told the woman it was over, she wasn’t letting him get away
from her that easily. The man said she picked up
a cinder block and threw it at his truck, shattering
his windshield.
When the officer asked Shamblin what happened, she said she and her ex were talking in his truck. When she exited the
vehicle, her ex became angry and grabbed her arm and punched her in the face.
After he punched her, she said she grabbed the closest thing to her, which happened to be the brick. She tried to hit her ex, but she missed and hit the windshield of his truck instead.
She had a small red mark under her eye.
During the investigation, the officer was advised Shamblin had warrants for her
arrest out of Ottawa County. Due to the alleged assault and warrants, the officer
placed her under arrest and transported her to jail.
Shamblin is being charged with malicious injury to property under $1,000. Her
bond was set at $1,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on May 20, 2016.

Keota woman Shelly Lynn Copeman, 29, was
locked up after she managed to steal more than
$300 worth of merchandise from the Stigler
Walmart on March 12.
She tried to avoid being arrested by changing
into a pair of stolen pants, but her plan didn’t
work.
According to the affidavit, a Stigler officer was
dispatched to the store in the 1300 block of East
Main around 10 p.m. An employee said he saw a
woman put some stolen items in a stolen purse
while perusing the store. When he confronted
her, she took off running and threw the purse
under a truck in the parking lot.
The employee said the woman was wearing
red pants, and she ran toward McDonald’s.
A restaurant employee contacted police and
said the suspect was now wearing white pants, and she was walking south toward
a car dealership.
The officer located the woman. He recognized her as Copeman. He took her
back to Walmart, and the employee positively identified her as the suspect.
Copeman was placed under arrest and transported to jail. In her purse, police
found $244.47 worth of stolen merchandise. During booking, an officer found
more stolen items that totaled $101.59.
The red pants Copeman was wearing during the alleged larceny were found in
the restroom at McDonald’s. And the white pants Copeman was wearing when
she was arrested? They were also stolen.
Copeman is being charged with larceny of merchandise from retailer. Her bond
was set at $5,000.
