CHILD ENDANGERMENT
Police arrested a Spiro man after he reportedly crossed the
Haskell County line to burglarize a home June 25.
That day, LeFlore County sheriff’s deputy Donnie Edwards received a call from Haskell County sheriffs about a break in on the
county line. The sheriffs determined the crime occurred in LeFlore County, and they figured out the suspect, Steven Stewart,
43, went across the road to his home in Haskell County.
A woman said Stewart kicked her front door open and pointed
a black semiautomatic pistol at her head, demanding her to return his air compressor back to him. Stewart then pointed the
gun out of the doorway, firing a shot into the air. After, he pointed the gun all around the room and back at her. The gun had a
laser light on it, and she said the light was on her several times
during the incident.
She was able to get away to a neighbor’s home, where she called the sheriff’s department,
she said. The neighbor confirmed her story, saying she heard one gunshot and a woman
screaming for help around 9:30 a.m. that day.
Later, Haskell County deputies found him, arrested him and held him until LeFlore deputies arrived. Stewart faces charges of first-degree burglary and feloniously pointing a firearm.
He has felony possession of marijuana conviction from 2003, and he received probation in
that case, records show.
Stewart remains in custody, and he has a court date set for 9 a.m. July 23.

BURGLARY- 2nd degree
A January fire at a Spiro man’s house
resulted in an arrest for first-degree
murder June 27.
At around 8:40 p.m. Jan 21, the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office received a
report of a structure fire at the 23800
block of Stewart Loop, just outside
Spiro. Panama police officer Andy Bevil
arrived to see a Elec Cusick, 38, and
Myrtle Cooper in the front yard unconscious while the house burned. Cooper
had blood on her face, head and right
leg, as well as burns all over her body,
and there were blood drops on the
porch leading from the front door.
The next day, police executed search warrants in the home, where
they found a bloody kitchen knife in the kitchen doorway and a broken 2x2 piece of wood covered with blood.
One of Cusick’s neighbor said Cooper was over at her house when
Cusick grabbed her by her arm and drug her back to his home. Soon
after, she looked outside, saw Cooper lying down on the concrete and
noticed Cusick was standing over her. Cooper was flown to Hillcrest
Medical Center in Tulsa, receiving treatment for third-degree burns,
multiple cuts and skull and facial fractures. She died of her injuries
March 14, and the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s office determined
she died from complications of burn injuries and blunt force trauma.
Cusick also went to the hospital for smoke inhalation treatment.
Officers interviewed him at the hospital, and he said he was trying to
keep Cooper from leaving him, so he beat her with the piece of wood
with enough force to break it into pieces, and then he cut her leg
open behind her knee to keep her from getting up and walking away.
Cusick was initially charged with assault and battery with means
likely to produce death. He remains in custody without bond.
Cusick is due in court at 9 a.m. July 30.

By Lt. Jeff James
Oklahoma Highway Patrol
I’ve touched on this subject
before, but it never hurts to revisit important topics, and with the
warm weather we are experiencing
right now, motorcycles are back out in force on the roadways. I’m
going to talk about some more ways to share the road and make
things safe from both the motorcyclist’s point of view as well as the
more common four wheeled motorists!
First, for those of you who are out riding your motorcycles,
always watch the other person, and assume they are not watching
you! Leave yourself an out and be prepared for any situation. Make
yourself seen! Try to make eye contact with other drivers, and use
your turn signals every time you change lanes or turn. “Cover”
your brakes! This does not mean to ride your brakes, just have
your hand or foot on them in case you need them. Make this a
habit and you will greatly increase your chances of getting out of a
bad situation. The acceleration capabilities of a motorcycle allow
them to gain speed much quicker than cars. Just remember that
this acceleration can carry you into a dangerous situation quicker
as well. At 60 miles per hour, you are covering over 80 feet of
roadway per second. Concentrate on the road in front of you and
avoid daydreaming. Road debris are not your friend and can get you
in trouble quickly!
Wear protective clothing! Use gloves, long sleeve shirts and
pants, and always wear boots! Skin and asphalt do not go well
together! Wear your helmet, it’s a choice in Oklahoma, but look
at the choice professional riders make...they wear them every
time! There are a lot of options out there as far as leathers,
reinforced jackets, etc. that are out there that will protect you in
case of an accident. Last, obey all laws of the state, and look into
taking a safety course designed for motorcycles. These are relatively
inexpensive and can enhance your operator skills a great deal. You
will be amazed at what you learn and you will be eager to pass this
information on to fellow riders.
Now for the four or more wheeled motorists. Be a defensive
driver. Check mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a
lane of traffic and at intersections. Signal your intentions before
changing lanes or merging with traffic. Allow 3 to 4 seconds when
following a motorcycle so they have time to maneuver. Road
conditions which are minor annoyances to vehicles pose major
hazards to motorcycles! Make eye contact with motorcyclists, it lets
them know you see them! Finally allow the motorcyclist a full lane
width.
Finally, these are only a few tips and suggestions to help keep
everyone safe. Most of this information comes from brochures from
the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, which is a great resource for
educational materials and information. Thanks for reading, buckle
up, and be safe!

Attorney General Scott Pruitt’s Victim Services Unit reminds
crime victims in Oklahoma to register with the Victim Information
and Notification Everyday (VINE) program to receive inmate
alerts.
The reminder comes after concerns related to media reports
of possible inmate releases due to a recent court decision on the
state’s sex offender registry.
“Victims of crime can be impacted by hearing stories of even
possible release of offenders, and they need instant access to
information to determine their location,” Pruitt said. “Victims of
crime don’t deserve to be victimized twice.”
The Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE)
program is a free and anonymous service that allows Oklahomans
to register and be notified about changes in the status of Oklahoma
inmates. The service notifies participants with inmates’ current
status information such as general release date, escape, returns
from escape, death, out to court and unsupervised custody. VINE
offers multiple ways to receive notifications.
The newest way to receive VINE notifications is through the
Attorney General’s VINEmobile app, which allows victims of crime
and the public to use smart phones or tablets to receive alerts.
The AG’s VINE notification program provides free instant access
to information 24 hours a day year-round. VINE transfers data
every 15 minutes from county jails. Data from the state Department
of Corrections and probation and parole is processed each evening.
To sign up for the VINE program, Oklahomans can log onto
www.vinelink.com or call (877) OK4-VINE.

On June 29, an officer with the Wilburton Police Department was sitting in his patrol car on the side of the road when
he noticed a vehicle traveling faster than the posted speed
limit of 35 mph. He activated his radar and it showed that the
vehicle was traveling 51 mph.
The officer pulled the vehicle over and made contact with
the driver, Chad Jaylon Browne, 41, and his female passenger.
After running the Wilburton man’s license through dispatch,
the officer discovered that his driver’s license was suspended.
He placed Browne under arrest for driving with a suspended
license.
According to the affidavit, the officer put Browne in his patrol
car and noticed the strong odor of alcohol. He asked Browne if
he had had anything to drink and Browne told him no. He also
asked Browne’s female passenger if she had had anything to
drink and said no, but that Browne had had a couple of beers.
Browne admitted that it was true and said he had drunk the beers earlier that day. Browne
agreed to a standardized field sobriety test, but was obviously intoxicated and failed every
test the officer had him attempt. Browne was transported to the Latimer County Jail.
As though being arrested for driving with a suspended license and driving under the influence wasn’t bad enough, Browne’s fun was just getting started.
During booking, the jailer asked Browne if he had anything on his person or in his pockets.
He said he had a pocketknife and took it out of his pocket in the closed position.
He walked toward the jailer as though he was going to lay it on the table, but instead moved
the knife in a forward motion in the direction of where a trooper was standing.
Assaulting an officer in a jail? Not so smart, Browne.
The trooper swiftly grabbed Browne’s arm and pinned it behind his back.
He conducted a pat down of Browne and found a smoking device with a burnt reside that
field-tested positive for marijuana.
Browne is being charged with driving a moving vehicle while under the influence of drugs,
assault on police officer, possession of controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with suspended license and speeding in a posted zone. His bond was set
at $15,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 3, 2013.
Put the knife
down, Browne!

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children,
taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children
receive public assistance and their parents pay no child support,
all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

THIS IS THE DAY THAT I HAVE MADE.
Rejoice and be glad in it. Begin the day with open hands of faith, ready to receive all that
I am pouring into this brief portion of your life. Be careful not to complain about anything,
even the weather, since I am the Author of your circumstances. The best way to handle unwanted situations is to thank Me for them. This act of faith frees you from resentment and
frees Me to work My ways into the situation, so that good emerges from it.
To find Join in this day, you must live within its boundaries. I knew what I was doing when
I divided time into twenty-four –hour segments. I understand human frailty, and I know that
you can bear the weight of only one day at a time. Do not worry about tomorrow or get stuck
in the past. There is abundant Life in My Presence today.
Psalm 118:24, Philippians 3:13-14
TRUST ME IN EVERY DETAIL OF YOUR LIFE. Nothing is random in My kingdom. Everything that happens fits into a pattern for good,
to those who love Me. Instead of trying to analyze the intracacies of the pattern, focus your
energy on trusting Me and thanking Me at all times. Nothing is wasted when you walk close
to Me. Even your mistakes and sins can be recycled into something good, through My transforming grace.
While you were still living in darkness, I began to shine the Light of My Presence into your
sin-stained life. Finally, I lifted you up out of the mire into My marvelous Light. Having sacrificed My very Life for you, I can be trusted in every facet of your life.
Jeremiah 17:7, Romans 8:28, Psalm 40:2, 1 Peter 2:9

A McAlester man was sentenced July 11 to 108 months for maintaining a drug house.
Elmer Don Whittaker, 52, was sentenced to 108 months of imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release for Maintaining a
Drug-Involved Premises.
The defendant was indicted in August, 2012 in the Organized
Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Operation known
as “Dealer’s Choice”.
Whittaker pled guilty in November, 2012.
The charge arose from an investigation conducted by the United
States Drug Enforcement Administration in cooperation with the
District 18 Drug & Violent Crime Task Force, McAlester Police Department, Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department, Krebs Police Department, Muskogee Police Department, Tulsa Police Department, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, and the
U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The multi-jurisdictional investigation revealed that beginning in or about May 2011 and
continuing until on or about April 24, 2012, Whittaker allowed others to use his residence in
McAlester for the purpose of distributing crack cocaine.
Whittaker will remain in the custody of the United States Marshal Service pending transportation to the designated federal prison at which he will serve his non-parolable sentence.

Looking for a “stable” relationship
Cirilo Castillo, a 43-year-old Texas man, was jailed July
3 after he allegedly had sex with a horse three months after
his release from prison for committing the same crime.
According to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, Castillo
was jailed in January, 2012, after he allegedly engaged in
sex acts with horses on two different ranches.
Investigators say the owner of one horse, named Nadia, suspected that Castillo had been released from prison
when she found a bucket turned upside down inside her
horse’s stall.
Investigators say the ranch owner set up surveillance
cameras on her property which reportedly caught Castillo
in the act of having sex with Nadia.
“We have a hell of a surveillance tape. It is not going to
America’s Funniest Videos, that is for sure,” said Hidalgo
County Sheriff, Lupe Trevino.
Castillo has been booked into jail and charged with trespassing and cruelty to animals.

A Krebs man’s stress over America’s birthday landed him in jail on
felony charges July 6.
Just before 6:30 p.m. that day, Krebs police received a report of a man
shooting a gun around Electric Street. Dispatch said Jimmy Steele, 33,
was involved, and the incident took place at his father’s house while he
was drunk.
Officers then went to Steele’s home in Krebs, accompanied by two
McAlester police and three Oklahoma Highway Patrol units. They
saw Steele’s pickup at the residence, so they set up a perimeter before
knocking on the door. A woman answered and admitted Steele had
been drinking recently, adding that he had a gun.
Five minutes later, Steele walked out the front door and was promptly arrested. The woman
allowed officers to search her home, where they found a mini 14 rifle with live rounds under
the love seat in the living room. Unfortunately for Steele, he was a convicted felon with gun
and drug charges, leading to his booking on possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.
In an interview at the jail, Steele said he was stressed out over the Fourth of July holiday,
so he went to his father’s house, took the mini 14 rifle belonging to his father and started
shooting blanks into the ground. The gun was jamming, so he took it home to clean it since
he “didn’t want to hurt anyone,” he said. Once police arrived, Steele said he “freaked out” and
hid the gun under the love seat because he knew he was breaking the law.
Steele posted a $10,000 bond July 16. He has court set for 9 a.m. July 19.

Phillip Williams was an unhappy consumer.
So he stopped two Tampa, Florida, police offi -
cers, handed over his crack pipe, and asked if they
wouldn’t mind testing the crack cocaine that he’d
bought earlier, just to make sure it was the real
deal. Good news! It was. Bad news! They arrested
him.
A 17-year-old suspected arsonist approached a
car in Lambertville, Michigan, intending to siphon
gas from it. What he forgot to do was ask permission from the detective sitting in the front seat.
When Sheboygan, Wisconsin, police pulled over
a car for not having proper registration, a passenger did what many criminals do — he supplied the
cops with an alias. Bad move. Turns out, that particular alias was wanted for vehicular homicide.
Alexander D. Smith walked into an Augusta,
Georgia, bank and tried to open an account with a
$1 million bill. Great idea — except there is no such
thing as a $1 million bill.
Two machete-wielding men barged into a Sydney, Australia, bar demanding money. Because
they didn’t know the club was hosting a bikers’
meeting, one ended up in the hospital, the other
hog-tied with electrical wire.
Convicted of receiving stolen property, James
Wombles, 37, had to wear an ankle bracelet as
part of his parole. The bracelet came complete
with a GPS monitoring system that let cops track
his every move. Over the course of a few weeks,
the Riverside, Ohio, man allegedly broke into six
homes. You know where this is going — just as the
cops knew where Wombles was going. Following
the signals from his bracelet, they tracked him to
his car, where they found him sitting on the stolen
booty.
When Ellis Cleveland was arrested in Honolulu,
a detective informed him he was suspected of robbing four banks. “Four?” responded Cleveland,
according to the detective’s affi davit. “I didn’t do
four; I only robbed three banks.”

CRAPPY WAY TO GO TO JAIL
A woman taking her 7-year-old daughter to the restroom at a
Keystone Lake park saw a man looking up at her from inside a public
toilet. The man, 52-year-old Kenneth Webster Enlow, was arrested
on a Peeping Tom complaint.
Tulsa County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to White Water Park
women’s bathroom July 7 by a park ranger. The park, on the southeast
side of Keystone Dam, has toilet facilities that include a septic tank
under a cement slab. A plastic toilet seat sets over the hole that allows
access for septic service, according to an arrest report.
Deputy Brian Osman said in his arrest report that he saw Enlow
standing in the septic tank. Keystone Fire and Rescue helped Enlow climb out of the toilet
and used a fire hose to clean him off.
Enlow first told authorities his girlfriend “Angel” hit him in the head with a tire iron and
dumped him in the toilet. Enlow did not have any fresh injuries that backed up his story.
Enlow was taken to Tulsa County Jail where he was booked on a Peeping Tom complaint
and on outstanding warrants from Okmulgee County.

McIntosh County sheriff’s deputies got
much more than they bargained for after
serving an arrest warrant June 20.
At 9 a.m. that day, deputy Gary Campbell was at the McIntosh County Courthouse in Eufaula, where he was supposed
to provide extra security for a case involving Kevin Jones, 32, who had pending
felony charges. Jones failed to appear, so
Campbell and other officers went to his
trailer to serve a failure to appear warrant.
However, he wasn’t home.
Campbell then spoke with some of Jones’ neighbors and the alleged victims in his cases to tell them Jones failed to appear in court.
Jones was a dangerous and unstable person, Campbell said, so he
wanted to make sure the other parties were safe, adding that Jones
routinely brags about how strong he is during physical fights.
Soon after, Campbell found out Jones was possibly keeping a man
hostage, with Jones answering the man’s phone for him saying he
was “asleep” and “unavailable.” He and the other officers descended
on Jones’ trailer to find both men. Once they saw the man’s truck
outside the trailer, they broke their way into the home, where they
saw Jones in the living room. The man was incoherent on the couch,
Campbell said.
In an interview, the man said he heard police try to come in, but
when he tried to get up from the couch Jones jumped on him, saying
“Shut up, you stupid m-----f----- or I will kill you,” cutting his circulation so he passed out.
Jones faces charges of conspiracy, aggravated assault and battery
and kidnapping. He remains in custody on bonds totaling $570,000.
Jones has court set for 9 a.m. Aug. 7.

An undercover Internet Crimes Against Children investigation using the Craigslist website nets a Warr Acres man
often paid by metro schools to play Santa.
On July 11, 2013, an OSBI Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force member from the Guthrie Police Department, along with a Logan County Sheriff’s deputy, arrested
Wiley Gene Davis, Jr. 49.
Davis responded to a Craigslist advertisement he believed
was posted by a 15-year-old girl. Davis made numerous
sexual and lewd proposals and even referred to himself as
“Santa”.
At approximately 7:30 that evening, Davis arrived at a convenience store in the area of Coltrane and Waterloo outside
Edmond to meet this 15-year-old girl. Once Davis exited his
vehicle, undercover agents noticed Davis was wearing a loaded pistol and a private investigator badge. He was immediately arrested for lewd acts proposals to a child under
16, violation of the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act, and possession of a firearm while
in the commission of a felony. He was booked into the Logan County Jail.
Davis is also a co-ed baseball coach for kids six years and younger in the Oklahoma
City metro area.

A Keota man was arrested after he allegedly broke
into a residence after a night of drinking.
On June 24, the Haskell County Sheriff’s Office and
Stigler Police Department responded to a report of a
burglary in progress. When they arrived, they found an
individual running from the residence and placed him
in a patrol car. According to the affidavit, police also
found that a screen on a window of the house had been
cut and there were shoe prints and fresh tobacco spit
on the back porch.
The suspect in the patrol car was transported to the
sheriff’s office, but maintained his innocence. At first,
he said he was just out for a walk, trying to clear his
head. When police showed him the evidence, he recanted that statement and said he had been working as a
lookout for his buddy.
He explained that he had been drinking with Edward Junior Branch, 36. Sometime
during the evening, the suspect said Branch told him, “Come on, let’s go to work.”
He asked Branch what kind of work and Branch told him “break into cars.”
When police asked the suspect about breaking into the residence, he said he never
went in, but that Branch had disappeared around the back of the house. After about
20 to 30 minutes, the suspect claimed that Branch came running from the back of
the house and yelled, “Run!”
The suspect said he ran until he heard a loud pop and a man told him to stop because the police were on their way.
The next day, police arrested Branch for burglary in the first degree. Branch denied
any involvement and said he wanted to speak to an attorney.
Later in the day, Branch decided he wanted to talk and told police that he was the
look out and never went into the house. As the interview progressed, he admitted
that he had gone into the residence, but didn’t hurt anyone inside the home.
Branch is being charged with aggravated assault and battery, robbery by force,
burglary in the first degree and conspiracy to commit burglary in the first degree. An
order of commitment was issued for Branch and he is scheduled to appear in court
on July 29, 2013.

Death row
Anthony Rozelle Banks
An Oklahoma death row inmate set to die
in September has waived his right to seek
clemency from the state Pardon and Parole
Board.
Anthony Rozelle Banks is set to be executed
on Sept. 10. He was convicted in the 1979
rape and murder of Sun I. Kim Travis in
Tulsa County. The conviction came 20 years
after the crime because of newly discovered
DNA evidence. Banks had been serving a noparole life sentence for an unrelated killing
in which he originally had been sentenced to
death. An appeal reversed that conviction,
and he made a plea bargain to avoid death.
A co-defendant, Allen Wayne Nelson, received a life sentence.
Banks and Nelson were charged in August 1997 when the DNA of both
men was detected in evidence found on the victim.
Banks has been on death row since November 14, 1999.
