Poteau man Anthony William Cottman, 27, was arrested
July 6 because he reportedly broke into a home and attempted to kill some people with a knife.
According to the affidavit, a Poteau police officer was dispatched to the 800 block of Grady Street at 4:35 a.m. to investigate a burglary in progress. Dispatch advised the suspect was armed with a knife and had broken a window at the
residence.
When the officer arrived, he found a shirtless Cottman
standing in the front yard, yelling at people in the house. He
was immediately ordered to get on the ground by gunpoint.
An officer placed him in handcuffs.
Police spoke to the people in the house, and they said Cottman woke them up by breaking a window to a bedroom. He
then threw a knife at a man, cutting his middle finger.
Cottman also allegedly broke two other windows at the
residence and kicked a large dent in the front door.
As an officer was taking the Cottman to jail, he yelled that he didn’t want to hurt a woman
who was in the residence -- he just wanted to kill the other two in the house.
Cottman is being charged with burglary in the first degree and assault and battery with a
dangerous weapon. His bond was set at $10,00, and he was scheduled to appear in court on
July 10, 2015.

Summer is upon us, school is
out, and the time for recreation
and fun in the sun is here! With
summertime comes traffic to and from the lakes, as well as
numerous other endeavors that you can enjoy across the state,
including camping, riding horses, motorcycles, and atv’s, and other
activities too numerous to list here. One thing that a lot of these
activities have in common is towing something to and from these
locations. I’ve touched on this before, but it never hurts to re-visit
basic safety issues to keep in mind when towing a trailer, so here
goes!
One of the most important safety features that trailers come
equipped with are the safety chains or cables. These are required,
and must be in use when towing. These chains keep the trailer
attached to the vehicle should the coupling device break or
otherwise become disengaged. These chains or cables shall be of
sufficient size and strength to prevent parting from the towing
vehicle. A helpful hint when connecting your stay chains or cables
is to cross them under the tongue of the trailer. The stay chains or
cables must be attached in a manner to prevent the tongue from
falling to the ground, and crossing them allows the chains to catch
it if it should come off the coupling device.
Some larger trailers come equipped with an emergency
breakaway device. This device has a cable coming from it that must
be attached to the vehicle. If the trailer becomes disconnected from
the vehicle, when the cable is pulled tight, it automatically applies
the trailer brakes, preventing it from free-rolling. This device is
required on all trailers with a GVWR of 3000 lbs or more. Speaking
of brakes, state law requires that all brakes be maintained and in
good working order!
If you are breaking out this trailer for the first time since winter,
it’s a good idea to check the tires. Tires that sit for a long time
develop dry rot, flat spots, and lose pressure. Make sure that your
tires are in good working order, still have sufficient tread, and
check the pressure. Run the tires at the manufacturer’s suggested
psi for optimal performance.
Last but not least, we come to trailer lights. Make sure that all
your lights are functional. Plug them into the towing vehicle, and
check them all! Don’t assume that if they work in the daylight,
they will work at night, go ahead and check them with the towing
vehicle’s headlight switch turned on as well. If you are towing
more than one thing; in other words, towing in combination, only
the rearmost trailer’s lights must be operational.
Summertime is recreation time, and getting our toys to our
destination and back safely is the responsibility of every safe,
courteous driver. Lets all do our part to enjoy summer safely. As
always, thanks for reading, buckle up and be safe!

A Wilburton woman caused a scene while trying to get
some food at EZ Mart in the early morning hours of July
1. She was allegedly driving all crazy in the parking lot and
when a woman tried to confront her, she started yellin’ and
cussin’.
According to the police report, a Wilburton police officer
was dispatched to the store in the 400 block of West Main
shortly after 2 a.m. When he arrived, he found Makesha Lee
Smith, 33, and another woman, standing in the parking lot
yelling at each other.
Smith tried to get in her car and leave, but the officer told
her he needed to speak with her first. She told him she went
to EZ Mart to get some food, but she realized she forgot her
wallet. She went back home to get it, and when she returned,
a woman approached her and started “getting hateful” with
her.
While the officer was talking to Smith, he noticed that she smelled like alcohol and was
unsteady on her feet. Her eyes were also red and bloodshot. She initially said she had only
drank one beer, but she later changed her story to include a shot of Jagermeister.
The officer tried to administer sobriety tasks, but Smith wouldn’t follow instructions and
she wouldn’t give a good enough sample for a breath test. She kept asking the officer why he
wasn’t talking to the other woman involved.
When the officer told her that he was taking her to jail for public intoxication, she jerked
away and tried to turn around. He was able to place her in cuffs anyways.
The other woman involved told the officer she saw Smith pull into the EZ Mart parking
lot, “driving recklessly.” She said Smith then left the parking lot, but she almost hit another
vehicle because of how she was driving.
The woman said Smith returned about 15-20 minutes later, and she walked inside the
store. She tried to talk to Smith, but the woman started yelling and cussing at her. The woman said Smith seemed to either be drunk or on drugs, because she was stumbling around the
store.
Smith was placed under arrest and transported to jail.
She is being charged with obstructing an officer and public intoxication. She was released
on a personal recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 6, 2015.

Hugo man Bobby Ray Cochnauer,
65, got caught chasing some people
with a hammer on July 8. An officer placed him under arrest after he
heard the man yell,”I’ll kill you!”
According to the police report, a
Hugo officer responded to an assault
in progress at a residence in the 600
block of S. Second Street shortly after 9 p.m. When he arrived, he saw a
man he recognized as Cochnauer. He
recognized the man because he had
dealt with him an hour prior for another call at the same residence.
Cochnauer was holding a hammer over his head in an aggressive
manner, and he charged after a man and woman standing in the
middle of the road yelling, “I’ll kill you!”
The officer drew his weapon and yelled at Cochnauer to drop his
hammer. He then placed the man in handcuffs and put him in a patrol car.
The victim told police that he went to the house to get some of his
father’s belongings. His dad was in the hospital because Cochnauer
had assaulted him earlier that day. He said when Cochnauer saw
him, he started cussing and grabbed a hammer. The victim said he
then charged at him with the weapon.
The victim was able to run outside and get in his car, but Cochnauer followed him and started beating on his vehicle with the hammer. He busted out three windows on the car, took out a taillight and
kicked the bumper.
Cochnauer is being charged with assault with a dangerous weapon
and loiter in/injure/molest motor vehicle/joy ride. He was scheduled to appear in court July 9.

Hartshorne man Jaron Adams, 29, was arrested in
the early morning hours of July 5 after he allegedly
broke into a shed on July 4.
Instead of celebrating his independence, he just
lost his!
According to the police report, a Pittsburg County
deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of N. 11th
Street in Hartshorne at approximately 6 p.m. to investigate a burglary. The caller told the officer that
when he got home, he noticed a pair of shoes was
missing from the back door. He then noticed that the
combination lock on the shed had been broken off.
He didn’t notice anything missing from the shed, but
he did observe that several items had been moved
around.
About an hour later, the victim and his wife were ready to press charges against
Adams. The victim said he had spoken to Adams, and the man admitted to breaking into the shed.
Shortly after midnight, the deputy found Adams while conducting a safety
checkpoint. He saw the man’s vehicle stop in the middle of the road and make a
“hard” left onto a residential street.
The deputy stopped the man at Ninth and Peoria.
At first, Adams told the deputy he was at the residence, but he didn’t break into
the shed. He then told the deputy he was never at the residence.
The deputy placed him under arrest and took him to jai.
Adams is being charged with burglary in the second degree. He was released on
a $3,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 14, 2015.

Centrahoma man Ronald Steven Carrell, 28, allegedly stole an electricity meter and put it in the
meter box at his residence. He told an officer he
was just borrowing it until he had some money.
Unfortunately for him, you can’t borrow electricity -- you’ve gotta pay for that power!
On July 6, a Coal County deputy was dispatched
to a residence at Broadway and Jones in Centrahoma. Some electric company employees were at the residence, and they called
police because they had discovered something they knew just wasn’t right.
When the deputy arrived, the employees told him Carrell had “forcibly
gained entry” into a meter box owned by the electric company at his residence. The lock on the box was broken, and the meter in the box was not the
meter assigned to that box, according to the police report.
The employees disconnected the electricity from the meter box.
The deputy made contact with Carrell at his residence, and he asked him
what was going on. Carrell told him, “Well, I’m having my last cigarette.”
The deputy asked Carrell about the meter, and the man said he was just
borrowing the power. He told the deputy he planned on returning it when he
had some money. He was placed under arrest and transported to jail.
Carrell is being charged with tampering with utilities. He was released on
a personal recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on September 11, 2015.

A Tulsa man arrested in Antlers for hitting a man also threatened
to kill an officer when he was taken to jail.
43-year-old Steven Wayne Billy just didn’t seem to know when to
shut his mouth.
According to the police report, an Antlers police officer responded
to a call at a residence in the 100 block of NW I Street at approximately 3 p.m. People at the scene told him Billy had just left the area.
When the officer found Billy, he told the officer someone advised
him the victim was selling drugs out of his house, and he went to
take care of it and protect his kids. He said he told the victim he had
48 hours to leave the residence, or he was going to “gut him.”
The victim told the officer Billy forced his way into his home and
shoved him, putting a hole in the wall. He said Billy also hit him.
Around 5:28 p.m., the officer received another called about Billy -- he was back at the residence. The officer went back to the area and found Billy. The man smelled like alcohol and
he admitted to drinking.
The officer placed him under arrest and transported him to jail.
Once they arrived at jail, Billy told some officers he was going to kill them once he got out
of jail.
Billy continued to threaten police, even after he was placed in a cell. He told one officer he
was going to kill him by beating him to a pulp.
Billy is being charged with threaten to perform act of violence and public intoxication. He
was released on a $1,200 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 12, 2015.

Kinta man Kenneth Russell Lowe, 55, tried his darnedest not
to go to jail when an officer tried to talk to him about a traffic
accident on July 8. As much as he resisted and tried to fight, he
ended up going to jail anyway.
According to the police report, a Haskell County deputy was
dispatched to a possible accident in Kinta around 7:35 p.m. He
was advised that the possible driver in the accident was Lowe.
The reporting party told dispatch Lowe had left the scene and
was “irate.”
When the deputy found Lowe, he immediately smelled the
odor of alcohol. Lowe was also saying a bunch of stuff that
didn’t make sense, he had slow movements, and he kept repeating himself. But, when the deputy asked him if he has been
drinking, he said no.
The deputy told him he was under arrest.
Lowe jerked away and said, “I’m not going back to jail.” He then turned and face the deputy
in a combative stance.
The deputy took out his taser and told Lowe multiple times to put his hands behind his
back. The man refused and acted like he was going to run. The deputy went after him, and
they both fell to the ground. After a brief struggle, police were able to put the very determined
man in handcuffs. He was then transported to jail.
Lowe is being charged with public intoxication and resisting an officer.

Marshall County, Alabama, Sheriff Scott Walls said a burglary suspect got more than he bargained for when he attempted to flee deputies
across a field belonging to a particularly ornery bull on July 8.
Walls said it started around 8 a.m. at a residence on Baldwin Drive
in Arab, Ala. The owner of a home on that street came home and found
a truck in his yard belonging to two people who were burglarizing his
home. The homeowner immediately called the Sheriff’s Office and
chased the suspects as they ran away.
A short time later, Sheriff Walls said deputies and Arab Police located
the suspect’s vehicle and pursued it to the Union Grove area, where the
truck crashed.
“The driver, Brad Lynn Hemby, 26, of Boaz, fled across a cow pasture
and grabbed the attention of a bull roaming the field. The bull also gave chase along with deputies,” Walls said.
With more on his mind than jail at that moment, Hemby continued to run. Bad turned to worse
for him when he fell into a barbed wire fence. He immediately surrendered to deputies, Walls said.
The female passenger in Hemby’s truck ran into a wooded area not occupied by a bull and has
not been located at this time.
After the arrest, deputies recovered stolen property from Hemby’s truck, Walls said. Hemby is
charged with burglary, theft, and attempting to elude. Deputies continue to search for the passenger.

A 21-year-old Atoka man tried to
fight an officer after the officer placed
him under arrest during a traffic stop on
July 6 for driving with a suspended license. He allegedly told the officer, “You
are about to f------ make this harder
than it needed to be.”
After a brief struggle and some pepper spray to the face, Jia Gerreall Fisher
actually learned he made it harder than
it needed to be.
According to the affidavit, an Atoka
officer stopped Fisher shortly after 7
p.m. in a motel parking lot because the
man’s vehicle had a defective exhaust system. While checking the
man’s information, the officer was advised that he was driving with
a suspended license.
The officer told Fisher he was under arrest.
Fisher started begging the officer not to take him to jail. After his
pleading didn’t work, he became angry and shoved the officer. He
tried to run, but the officer was able to grab him and take him to the
ground.
Fisher continued to fight, and not even some pepper spray could
deter the determined man. He managed to get away and run to his
car at one point, but the officer was once again able to take him to
the ground.
Fisher got away again, but he got stuck when he ran up to a fence.
He turned toward the officer and got ready to fight some more, but
the officer sprayed him with some more pepper spray.
This time, the spray worked. Fisher fell to the ground and the officer placed him in handcuffs.
Fisher is being charged with assault and battery upon police officer. His bond was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in
court on July 15, 2015.

Moore man Daniel Eugene Miller, 40, was arrested in Checotah after an officer recognized a boat stolen from Oklahoma City
around 4:31 p.m. on July 1.
A Checotah police officer was on patrol when he saw a white
boat hitched to a U-Haul truck in the 100 block of East South
Avenue. According to the police report, the officer recognized
the boat because it matched the picture of one stolen from the
OKC area that had been spotted in Checotah around noon that
day. The officer stopped his vehicle and made contact with Miller and a woman who were unloading boxes out of the U-Haul
trailer.
After checking the boat’s information, dispatch advised that
the boat was indeed the one that was stolen out of Oklahoma
City.
The couple was placed under arrest and transported to jail.
Miller told the officer a friend had given him the boat, but he wasn’t going to “snitch” and
tell police who the friend was. He said he didn’t want to get himself killed. He did, however,
tell police that the women didn’t know that the boat was stolen. She also told officers that she
had no idea Miller was transporting a stolen boat.
The woman who owned the residence where the couple was located said they were at her
place to put some property in her storage shed.
Miller is being charged with knowingly concealing stolen property. His bond was set at
$40,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on July 16, 2015.

Haworth man Jeremy Lynn Barnes, 29, allegedly took a lug wrench to a man’s
home and attacked him with the tool because he said the man was keeping him
away from his toddler.
He was placed under arrest after he admitted to the attack at the McCurtain
County Sheriff’s Office.
On July 5 shortly after 2 a.m., a woman called the sheriff’s office and told them
that her ex-boyfriend, Barnes, had broken into her home and assaulted her current boyfriend. When the officer arrived at the residence in the 5800 block of
state Highway 4, he was met by a man covered in blood and cuts. He said Barnes
hit him with a lug wrench. The victim said Barnes also broke the back door glass.
When Barnes’ ex went to the door to tell him to go away, he refused and told
the victim to come to the door. The victim refused, and that apparently pissed
Barnes off. He forced his way into the home and ran after the victim. The victim
ran outside into the yard, but Barnes followed him and hit him several times with
the wrench.
At 4:02 a.m., the deputy called Barnes and told him he needed to talk to him
at the sheriff’s office. When Barnes arrived, he admitted to forcing his way into
the house and attacking the victim with the lug wrench. He said he was upset the
victim was living with his baby momma, and he believed the man was getting in
the way of him speaking to his 3-year-old daughter. So, he said he grabbed the lug
wrench and went to the house to resolve the issue.
Barnes is being charged with breaking and entering with unlawful intent and
assault and battery. He was released on a $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear
in court on July 30, 2015.
