A man wanting to stay sober volunteered to serve part of his friend’s one-month
drunk-driving sentence. The 51-year-old Swede wanted to see if he could pose as
his friend and fool the justice system, but he was discovered two weeks into the
sentence. The man said, “I wanted to go to jail to stop myself from drinking for a few
weeks. My pal didn’t think it would work. He agreed to let me try. I borrowed his ID
card and identified myself as him at the prison.” He has since been charged with perjury and wrongful use of another person’s identity.
A Golden Gate Estates man couldn’t fool anybody when he tried to get his vehicle
registration renewed with a fake license, Collier sheriff’s deputies said. Marcial Montes-Lopez, 29, of the 1100 block of 21st Street Southwest, used a driver’s license
described in an arrest report as “obviously fake because of the cartoonish photo and
vibrant colors,” deputies wrote in an arrest report. He faces a single charge of possessing a counterfeit driver’s license. Montes-Lopez was trying to renew his registration at a Collier County Tax Collector’s office in Golden Gate when employees spotted
the fake ID, deputies said. The license number on the ID was issued to Montes-Lopez
but expired in July 2010, the report said.
A man facing drug trafficking charges made a strong first impression at his court
appearance in Broward County when he showed up wearing a “crack shirt.” The shirt
included instructions for making crack cocaine.
Chilean doctors say a 266 pound man who was shot in the stomach was saved
by his rolls of fat. They say the bullet lodged in the man’s fat and did not damage
any vital organs. A thinner person would have been killed immediately. A hospital
spokesperson in Santiago says the man’s thick layer of fat acted in the same way as
a bulletproof vest, taking the impact of the shot. La Cuarta newspaper reports Omar
Alegria Campos, who’s 33, was driving his bus in the San Bernardo area of Santiago
when an armed man got on and started robbing passengers. Alegria stopped the bus
and switched on his emergency lights to alert the police. He then tried to grab the
man’s weapon. The attacker fired twice. The first bullet smashed the windscreen and
the second lodged in the bus driver’s stomach. Despite the wound, Alegria managed
to throw himself on top of the robber, stopping him from escaping. A passing police
patrol arrested the 29-year-old attacker. They also took Alegria to El Pino Hospital,
where doctors extracted the bullet and sewed up the wound.
Two northern Arizona parents were arrested after photos of their young children
allegedly being abused were posted on Facebook. An anonymous Facebook user
reportedly alerted authorities on Wednesday after seeing two children, an infant and a
toddler, bound with duct tape around their wrists and ankles in photos posted to the
social networking site. In the photos, the 2-year-old and 10-month-old are allegedly
bound with duct tape around their wrists and ankles. Their mouths were also closed
shut with duct tape. Police said one of the children was hung upside down on an
exercise apparatus. Jayla Hamm, who was 17 at the time of the abuse, received 10
days in jail and two years probation. Her boyfriend, Corde Honea, 19, an ex-convict,
was sentenced to three to five years for child abuse and received an additional 12 to
24 months on felony possession of stolen firearms.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.

bond denied
Bond has been denied for a 25-year-old
Swink man who is allegedly responsible for
the death of his son.
Sean Deion Gasway was charged April 17
with murder in the first degree- child abuse, in
Choctaw County District Court.
According to OSBI, they, with assistance
from the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office,
Hugo Police Department, and Sawyer Police
Department, arrested Gasway in connection
with the death of his three-month-old son.
The investigation began on April 10, 2020,
when the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office
received a 9-1-1 call about an unresponsive
three-month-old child. The baby was transported to Choctaw County Memorial Hospital, and then transferred to Saint
Francis Children’s Hospital in Tulsa. It was determined that the victim had
sustained a life-threatening brain injury.
The Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office contacted the OSBI and requested
investigative assistance with the case. During the course of the investigation,
it was determined that the baby’s injury was the result of Shaken Baby Syndrome and that the baby was in the care of his biological father, Gasway, at
the time the injury occurred.
On April 15, 2020, the baby died at Saint Francis Children’s Hospital as a
result of his injuries. The Choctaw County District Attorney’s Office charged
Gasway with Murder in the First Degree related to the death of his baby. Gasway has been in custody since April 10 when he was arrested on an unrelated
outstanding warrant and booked into the Choctaw County Jail. He remains in
custody and his preliminary hearing conference is set for June 30 at 9:30 a.m.

A New Mexico woman is facing charges after
police say she stole a car and later tried to claim
she was pop singer Beyoncé Knowles.
Surena Henry was arrested in Las Cruces, New
Mexico, when an officer spotted a vehicle that resembled one that recently had been reported stolen, the Las Cruces Sun-News reports.
According to court documents, the 48-year-old
Henry ignored the officer’s orders to pull over and
later parked in front of her home.
Documents say Henry told the officer she was
Beyoncé.
Police also reported Henry told the officer she found the keys in the
vehicle and decided to take it for a joy ride. She also allegedly told police
that she didn’t stop driving when she saw the emergency lights because
she didn’t feel like it.
Henry is charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, concealing
identity and resisting or obstructing an arrest.

mattress king
A Durant man was put in jail after he was accused of
stabbing another man while helping a woman pick up a
mattress on May 1.
According to the affidavit, a Durant officer was dispatched to the hospital at approximately 6:30 p.m. to investigate a stabbing. He spoke with the victim, who was
bleeding from his upper left abdomen.
The victim said he was trying to sell a mattress to a
woman who was dating Jason Russell Mayes. He said the
woman agreed to come get the mattress. Mayes came
with the woman, and the victim said he told the man that
he needed to leave. Mayes and the man started arguing.
The fight turned physical, and the victim said he felt something stab him in the stomach. The victim was able to grab
the knife from Mayes during the scuffle.
Mayes started to leave, so the victim said he grabbed a yard scraper and threw it at
Mayes’ back windshield.
Officers went to the 1600 block of S. 9th to speak to Mayes about the incident.
When an officer found Mayes in the backyard of a residence, he placed the man in
handcuffs.
Mayes asked why he was being handcuffed. The officer told him that he was investigating why the victim was in the emergency room. Mayes said the woman involved
in the incident told him she took the victim to the ER because he was bleeding from
his stomach.
Mayes told police he and the victim used to be friends, but every time he and the
woman fought, she would leave and go see the victim.
When asked about the stabbing allegations, Mayes said he didn’t stab anyone. He
said he was only at the victim’s residence to help the woman get the mattress, but the
victim was mad that he was there. Mayes said the victim became physical with him,
so he headbutted him. When he tried to leave the property, he said the victim broke
the back window on his vehicle.
The man was arrested and transported to jail.
The nurse who was taking care of the victim later told officers that the victim had
been stabbed through his stomach lining and was going into surgery.
Mayes is being charged with assault and/or battery with a dangerous weapon. His
bond was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on May 27, 2020.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children, taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children receive
public assistance and their parents pay no child support, all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty 15 | JUNE 2020 LEFLORE COUNTY
Where’s the party?
A 25-year-old Monroe man was locked up
for a plethora of charges after he led police on
a pursuit through Poteau on April 14.
According to the police report, Edward
Charles Sofsky is facing nine charges after
the police chase. During the chase, he allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of
South McKenna and West Pleasant Valley
Road.
Sofsky also had a suspended driver’s license.
When a Poteau officer tried to stop him at
South McKenna and Highway 59, Sofsky instead increased his speed and just kept on
going. When his vehicle was finally stopped,
it was clear why the man wanted to get away.
Sofsky, who was on probation, had a number of things in his vehicle that
shouldn’t have been in his possession. Officers found 20 grams of methamphetamine, some marijuana, several guns and a firearm with a defaced serial
number. They also found 10 digital scales, some plastic baggies, three butane
canisters, a propane tank with torch, another torch, some smoking devices, a
metal ice scoop, a pink bowl, a tray, a dash cam and an ice bucket.
Sofsky is being charged with trafficking in illegal drugs, possession of firearms after conviction or during probation, possession of firearm during commission of a felony, committing felony with firearm with defaced ID number,
unlawful possession of controlled drug with intent to distribute, eluding/attempting to elude police officer, driving with license canceled/suspended/revoked, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to stop for stop
sign. His bond was set at $180,500, and he is scheduled to appear in court
on May 20, 2020.

20 | JUNE 2020 PITTSBURG COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
A lucky lottery ticket turned out to be not so lucky for a Florida store clerk,
who’s accused of stealing it from a “customer.” The reason “customer” is in
quotes is because, per the Miami Herald, he was actually an undercover agent
for the Florida Lottery on a routine visit to a Winn-Dixie Liquor store in Fort
Myers. The agent says he went up to the counter with a winning ticket worth
$600, but when he handed it to 42-year-old Crystelle Yvette Baton to cash it
in, she gave him a lot less—just $5, taken right out of her own pocketbook—
after scanning it in and realizing its worth. Baton was arrested when the agent
returned a short time later and charged with larceny grand theft; the winning
ticket was found stashed between the pages in her notebook.
Police in West Virginia say a suspected bank robber was captured after taking a cab to the heist. Ryan Michael Stepanian was arrested in the robbery of a
Charles Town bank and another bank heist in nearby Ranson, the AP reports.
Cab driver George Lyon says he took Stepanian from an apartment complex to
the Charles Town bank for what Stepanian said was a routine matter. Afterward
Lyon dropped him off at a park. Lyon says he then recognized Stepanian’s
photo on social media from the earlier robbery and notified police. Stepanian
was later arrested. Charles Town police said in a news release that Stepanian
was found with an undisclosed amount of cash and a bank-robbery note. (This
bank robber was caught after using his own debit card at the teller window.)
Doughnuts and arrests appear to be inextricably linked in the life of North
Carolina man Bradley Hardison. The 27-year-old—who was arrested in 2014
after he won the doughnut-eating contest at the Elizabeth City Police Department’s National Night Out Against Crime event, helping officers who’d been
seeking him in connection with two felony burglaries track him down—has
been charged with robbing a doughnut shop, the Virginian-Pilot reports. Police
in Elizabeth City say Hardison, who became champ by eating eight glazed
doughnuts in under two minutes, has been charged with offenses including
felony breaking and entering and felony safe-cracking in connection with a burglary at a Dunkin’ Donuts in November. It’s not clear whether Hardison helped
himself to any doughnuts during the alleged crime, the AP reports.
Police say a getaway car ran out of gas after an armed robbery near Atlanta,
leading to the speedy arrest of two suspects. Gwinnett County police Cpl. Michele Pihera says 18-year-old Najee Logan and 21-year-old Justin Larry were
charged with armed robbery after their arrest after officers found the car on
empty. Pihera’s statement says the victim surrendered a wallet to two men
at gunpoint in a grocery store parking lot about 1am in Stone Mountain, Ga.,
reports the AP. Police say officers found the car about 15 minutes later with
Logan and Larry inside; they had made it about two miles down the road before running out of gas, notes the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Both men were
jailed, and police didn’t say if they have lawyers. Pihera says it’s fortunate the
victim wasn’t hurt, chalking up the arrests to what she called “poor planning”
by the suspects.
Authorities say a man who was in a Colorado court for violating his bond on a
drug charge is in even more trouble after a wad of cocaine fell from his hat while
he was in front of the judge. The Vail Daily reported that 43-year-old Juan Jose
Vidrio Bibriesca was standing next to two other defendants at an Eagle County
District Court podium when he took his hat off and a square of folded paper fell
out. A police officer watched the paper filled with cocaine fall to the floor, reports
the AP, and after reviewing surveillance footage, authorities determined it fell
from Bibriesca’s hat. Bibriesca was then walked to the county jail, and now faces new charges of narcotics possession and another bond violation. Booking
documents don’t indicate if he has hired an attorney. The Vail Daily notes that
Bibriesca is in the country illegally, meaning his legal woes aren’t over.

Birthday party leads to
arrest of McAlester man
A birthday party ended in injury after a McAlester
man allegedly stabbed another partygoer who tried
to break up a fight.
Reports state the ill-fated party took place on
April 18.
A McAlester officer was dispatched to investigate a stabbing in the area of North D Street and
West Electric Avenue. The officer was advised that
the suspect had fled the scene.
When the officer arrived at the location, she
made contact with the victim, who was in a bathroom at another residence. He had blood on him.
The officer noticed that the man had been
stabbed in four places: his left elbow, left shoulder,
left thigh and left side of his head. He also had a cut going down to his nose.
Another party attendee told the officer that 43-year-old Athen Wayne Phifer
was at the party when he was asked to leave. At some point, he charged
a juvenile who was also attending the party. The victim jumped in between
Phifer and the juvenile and tried to intervene. The men started fighting before
they were pulled apart.
During the scuffle, Phifer was able to stab the victim a few times. He then
ran away from the party.
The stabbing victim told police the same account of events. He said he was
just trying to protect his nephew from Phifer. The man said he noticed that he
was bleeding after the fight, but he didn’t immediately realize that he had been
stabbed until he went to the residence where the officer found him.
The man’s nephew told police that he heard Phifer banging on the door at
his nana’s house, so he went outside to confront him. Phifer pulled out a knife.
The nephew said he then saw his uncle and Phifer fighting on the ground.
Officers later found the suspect near the intersection of North R Street and
West Monroe. He was placed under arrest and transported to jail.
Phifer is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
His bond was set at $75,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on May
29, 2020.
