When a 41-year-old Fort Smith, Arkansas, man was placed into police custody in a LeFlore County courtroom, he
tried to run away, injuring an innocent
bystander and breaking county property.
On February 19 at approximately 1:45
p.m., a deputy was called to a courtroom
to take Shane D. Smith into custody. According to the affidavit, when the judge
gave the deputy the order to place Smith
in custody, Smith tried to run away.
The deputy pursued him out of the
courtroom and took him to the ground
in the waiting area. Smith continued to fight and tried to stand up.
Another deputy arrived to assist and started to place Smith in handcuffs.
Smith told police, “I didn’t do anything to go to jail. Why are you
arresting me?”
He then jerked an arm away and hit the deputy in the face.
Deputies placed the not-so-innocent man in restraints and tried to
get him to stand up. Smith refused to stand, so the deputies “walked”
him to the jail. Even with all of the man’s resisting, they were finally
able to place him in a jail cell.
When they reviewed the courtroom cameras, they noticed that
when Smith tried to run out of the courtroom, he pushed the gates
of the courtroom into an innocent bystander, resulting in injury to
the victim and the gates of the courtroom.
If Smith didn’t do anything wrong before, he certainly did now!
Smith is being charged with injuring public building, assault and
battery on police officer, escape from arrest and assault and battery.
His bond was set at $25,000, and he was scheduled to appear in
court on February 27, 2015.
Never surrender peacefully

The National Association
of Students Against Violence
Everywhere is a nonprofit
aiming to provide safer environments for our youth.
Its mission is to decrease the
potential for violence in our
schools and communities by
promoting meaningful student involvement, education
and service opportunities.
SAVE’s Vision: Schools and
communities will be safer
and more secure, free of fear
and conducive to learning as
a result of students being actively involved in meaningful violence
prevention efforts.
How It Got Started: SAVE was started by students in Charlotte,
North Carolina in 1989 after the tragic death of a classmate who was
trying to break up a fight at an off-campus party. A group of students
who did not want this death to be “just another statistic” took action
and created a violence prevention program.
Chapters: SAVE has evolved into a national association with chapters in elementary, middle and high schools as well as at colleges and
community organizations across the country. Today, there are more
than 200,000 students involved nationwide.
Activities: Student members take the lead in planning chapter
activities by using the three SAVE Essential Elements: conducting
crime prevention activities, conducting conflict management activities and providing meaningful service through projects in schools
and communities. SAVE chapters also plan safety rallies and safety
awareness campaigns, engage in peer mentoring to younger students, and conduct fun and educational meetings.

A Wilburton woman was arrested February 19 after she repeatedly threatened a man
and allegedly broke into his home.
When questioned, she said she was just
an 18-year-old girl who had scared “some
21-year-old boy.”
According to the affidavit, a Latimer
County deputy was dispatched to a Wilburton apartment complex shortly after midnight for a report of an attempted burglary.
When he arrived, a man told him Autumn
Annlee Gardner and a juvenile man had
been harassing him and his girlfriend through text messaging. When
he told them he was going to call the police, Gardner asked him
where he staying.
Shortly after, the man said he heard loud banging on the living
room door. He said he looked through the window and saw Gardner
and her underage accomplice. They threatened to kill him, and they
started to push against the door. The man said the door broke off,
and Gardner and the boy entered the residence.
When he yelled that he had called the police, the two fled the
residence. He then received a text message from Gardner that said,
“Scary ass p*ssy.”
Police found Gardner and her partner-in-crime at her residence in
the 300 block of W. Ash. Gardner told the officer she didn’t want to
speak to him; she said all she had to say was she was “an 18-year-old
girl and some 21-year-old boy is scared.”
The juvenile male smelled strongly of alcohol, and he was hostile
and uncooperative with police. He told officers, “I didn’t know why
[the victim] didn’t want to fight and come outside.”
Gardner was placed under arrest and transported to jail. She is
being charged with burglary in the first degree, threaten to perform
act of violence and malicious injury to property. She was released on
a $10,000 bond.

An intoxicated Antlers woman
repeatedly called 911 because she
wanted “all of the drunks out of her
house.”
When Teresa Anne Scarpello, 53,
told an officer she needed somewhere to stay, he told her he had
just the place -- hello, Pushmataha
County Jail.
According to the affidavit, Scarpello repeatedly called 911 from
11:58 p.m. on February 17 to 12:15
a.m. on February 18. Dispatchers
said Scarpello would start yelling
and hang up before they could ask
her why she was calling. They said
she also sounded very intoxicated.
A Pushmataha County deputy called Scarpello to see what was
wrong, but she kept doing the same old thing -- she would yell at the
deputy and hang up the phone.
After being hung up on five times, the deputy went to Scarpello’s
residence to see what was up.
(This would be the deputy’s third encounter with the woman that
day. According to the deputy, Scarpello became increasingly intoxicated with each visit.) He found her sitting in her car in the driveway
-surprise!- yelling at someone on the phone.
The deputy opened the car door and asked her what was wrong.
She told him that she just wanted all of the drunks out of her house.
She then told the deputy that she needed a place to stay. He told her
he had just the place for her. He then placed her under arrest and
took her to jail.
Scarpello is being charged with disorderly house. She was released
on a $200 bond.
We have just the

A Broken Bow man decided to risk
it and went all in when he allegedly did
some drugs in the parking lot of a Grant
casino.
The cards definitely weren’t in his favor, because security saw the man smoking from his pipe and they called the police.
On February 15, a Choctaw Nation
Tribal Police officer was dispatched to
the casino on Highway 271 at approximately 12:38 a.m. for possible drug usage in the parking lot. According to the
affidavit, casino security showed him
video surveillance of Rickey Louis Rhoades, 54, sitting in his vehicle
smoking an unknown substance out of a glass pipe.
Police located the man in the casino.
The officer told him about the video and asked if the man had anything he should know about on his person. Rhoades said no, and he
told the officer he could take a look.
The officer didn’t find anything illegal on the man. The officer then
asked the man where the pipe was he had been using. Rhoades said
it was in his truck. They walked outside to the vehicle, and Rhoades
handed the glass pipe to the officer.
He also said, “I’ve got a little bit to go with it.”
He then handed the officer a clear plastic baggy containing a crystal-like substance and a black container. Inside the container was
another glass pipe, two straws and a blue rag.
The crystal-like substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
Rhoades was placed under arrest and taken to jail.
Rhoades is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous
substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He was
released on an $8,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on
March 31, 2015.

Coalgate woman Melissa Dianne Stover, 43, allegedly threatened to burn
down her daughter’s house and storage
shed on February 13.
When she admitted to having drug
paraphernalia in her room at the residence, police took her to jail.
According to the police report, a
woman called the Coal County Sheriff’s
Officer at approximately 6:45 p.m. and
told a deputy that her mother, identified as Stover, was threatening to burn
down her house and storage shed. She
also said she thought her mother might have been using drugs.
The deputy went to the residence and spoke to Stover who denied
threatening to burn the house down. She did admit to threatening to
burn down the storage shed, which contained her belongings.
When the deputy asked her if she had been using drugs, she said
no, but then told the deputy she had paraphernalia in her room. She
walked inside the home to her room and retrieved two pipes that
both had a burned black residue inside.
She told the deputy she had used them to smoke marijuana two
weeks earlier, but there was no longer any marijuana in the home.
The deputy asked her if he could search her room. She said yes, and
he found a small metal box containing a green powder substance.
The pipes and metal container field-tested positive for marijuana.
Stover was placed under arrest and taken to jail.
Stover is being charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. She was released on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to
appear in court on March 6, 2015.

A McAlester man got thirsty on February
23 and decided he was going to get himself
two 30-packs of beer at a local convenience
store.
He also decided to was going to get them
without paying.
On February 23, McAlester officer were
dispatched to a store at Sixth and Wyandotte Avenue because a man had left the
store with two 30-packs of beer he didn’t
pay for.
According to the affidavit, officer spoke to
the store clerk and started searching for 29-year-old Brandon Joe
Jones. They went to his residence in the 500 block of East Seminole.
On the front porch, there was an unopened can of beer matching the
brand Jones allegedly took from the store.
Police knocked on the doors for awhile, but no one answered. They
could hear a female crying inside, and one officer saw Jones walking
around the house. Finally, the woman opened the door and police
were able to enter the residence.
An officer noticed several unopened cans of beer lying all over the
living room and a torn open 30-pack beer box. Jones was uncooperative with officers, and he was eventually placed under arrest and
taken to jail.
An officer spoke with the woman at the home who told her there
was another 30-pack of beer upstairs, which also matched the brand
stolen from the store.
Police collected the alleged stolen beer and left the residence.
Jones told police the “bitch” at the convenience store wouldn’t sell
him any beer, so he took the 30 packs.
At the jail, he told police he was ready to fight and “to come on...
let’s get on it.” He also made derogatory comments about county
employees during booking.
Jones is being charged with threaten to perform act of violence,
obstructing an officer and larceny of merchandise from retailer. He
was released on a $200 bond.

A Stigler police officer dispatched to a local business for reports
of shoplifting on February 3 ended up arresting one man for a completely different reason.
According to the affidavit, the officer was dispatched to the business in the 1500 block of East Main because there were people allegedly stealing stuff. When he arrived, the owner of the store was
standing outside. He pointed at a truck that was parked in the parking lot.
The officer approached the truck and made contact with the driver, 47-year-old Freddie Joe Boston of Stigler and three passengers.
He asked Boston if he took anything from the store, and he said no.
The passenger, Stigler man Jacob Dwight Copeman, 21, told the officer that he had stolen
some pliers from the store. The officer searched Boston’s vehicle for stolen items.
In the backseat, he found a black container with black tape around the top. When the officer opened the box, he found three baggies containing a crystal substance. He asked Boston
if it was his. He said no.
Boston’s three passengers also denied that the box belonged to them. Boston then changed
his tune and admitted to the officer that the box and its contents were his.
Copeman is being charged with petit larceny. He was released on a $1,000 bond. Boston is
being charged with possession of controlled substance. His bond was set at $15,000.

Arlington, Texas, man Sean William Ferraro, 25, is facing
charges in Bryan County after he tried to break into a Colbert
residence while intoxicated. He said he thought he was already back home.
According to the police report, some Colbert residents were
rudely awakened by Ferraro trying to get into their residence
on Ridgecrest Drive. The homeowner told police he was woken up at 3:30 a.m. by a noise outside his bathroom window.
When he looked outside, he saw a man, later identified as
Ferraro, standing there.
The homeowner asked the strange man what he was doing
-- the man told him to open the door, because he wanted to
talk. The homeowner told him no. The man told him it was
cold outside, and he needed to let him in. The homeowner
told Ferraro he was going to call the police and get his gun.
Ferraro continued his attempt to get inside the house by trying to open both the back and
front door.
The homeowner told police Ferraro would have had to either jump the fence or go through
two gates to get to the back door and window.
Police found Ferraro sitting in the driveway of the residence.
The man was missing a shoe and appeared to be highly intoxicated. He told a Bryan County
deputy that he had been drinking and gambling at the casino. He said, “I thought I was at my
dad’s house [in Arlington] and I tried to get in.”
After checking the man for weapons or drugs, the deputy placed him under arrest and took
him to jail.
On the way, Ferraro said he didn’t know where his car was, and he wasn’t even sure if he
had driven, because casino security had told him he was too drunk to drive.
Should’ve listened, Ferraro!
At 8:15 a.m., police located Ferraro’s abandoned car 200 yards away from the home he
was trying to break into. It looked as though it had been involved in a wreck, and inside the
vehicle was Ferraro’s missing shoe, driver’s license and social security card.
Ferraro is being charged with attempted breaking and entering dwelling without permission and public intoxication. He was released on a personal recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 16, 2015.

Valliant woman Amy Patricia Rodriguez-Nations, 30, and
Wright City man David Charles Combs, 25, were arrested after police found drugs, paraphernalia and a loaded gun in
their vehicle shortly after 1 a.m. on February 25.
According to the police report, an Idabel police officer
stopped the couple’s vehicle because it was traveling 47
mph in a 35 mph zone on Washington Avenue. The driver,
Combs, had a suspended license.
The officer asked Combs if he could search the vehicle.
Combs said it was his mother’s car. When the officer told
him it was OK for him to consent to a search since he was
driving, Combs said he had a gun under his seat, but it belonged to a friend and he didn’t want to get in trouble.
The officer asked him to step out of the vehicle.
When the officer retrieved the weapon, a digital scale and
glass pipe fell from under the seat. After clearing the loaded
gun, the officer noticed the serial numbers on the gun had
been scratched off.
He placed Combs under arrest.
The officer then asked Rodriguez-Nations to exit the vehicle. He asked her to empty her pockets. Rodriguez-Nations
pulled a black bag from between her legs that contained a
cigarillo package with one missing, a syringe with a clear fluid that later tested positive for meth, a highlight with a pipe
at the end of it, and a green leafy substance.
The officer placed her under arrest.
During an inventory of the vehicle, the officer found lighters, a bottle containing a clear fluid and two small baggies
containing a clear crystal substance, which later field-tested
positive for methamphetamine.
When the officer transported Rodriguez-Nations to jail, she told him she would take the
charges for the marijuana and other items in her purse, but she wasn’t going to take any
charges for the meth. She said Combs told her he needed to sell his methamphetamine so he
could pay his dealer.
Rodriguez-Nations is being charged with two counts of possession of controlled dangerous
substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond information was unknown
at time of publication.
Combs is being charged with possession of firearm after former felony conviction, possession of controlled dangerous substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and
driving with license suspended. His bond was set at $12,500.
They are scheduled to appear in court on March 31, 2015.

An 18-year-old Atoka man was arrested after he allegedly tried to
get people to cash a stolen check for him.
Unfortunately for him, the people recognized the name on the
check!
On February 8, Tyler Gene Powell allegedly went around to different apartments in the 1000 block of South Choctaw asking people if
they had a bank account, because he wanted them to cash a check for
him on their account.
Two of the witnesses told police when they answered the door, he
walked into their apartment and asked if either one of them had a
bank account because he needed a check cashed.
When they asked to see the check, they recognized the name on
the check and sent him on his way. They also called the rightful owner of the check.
An Atoka officer was dispatched to the area at approximately 6:30 p.m. According to the
affidavit, a man told the officer he went to check the mail earlier that day and nothing was
there. He noticed that other mailboxes in the area were also open.
The man said his wife told him some of their clients had called and said Powell was trying
to get them to cash a check with the man’s name on it.
The officer located Powell, and the man agreed to speak with him. He told the officer he
didn’t know anything about a check.
Powell is being charged with uttering forged instrument. He was released on a personal
recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on March 4, 2015.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol
With this most recent ice
and snow storm that gripped
Oklahoma, there obviously were
some significant obstacles to safe driving. One that I have noticed,
that doesn’t really get a lot of attention, is the visibility that is
obstructed by iced over windshields and windows on vehicles. I’m
going to touch on some of that, to try to raise some awareness about
it, and give some tips to help us stay safe.
We’ve all seen it...a vehicle coming down the road with just a
small hole scraped in the windshield so the driver could see the
road. Every time I see it, I cringe! The law that governs this is
Oklahoma State Statute 47:12-404.C, which states: “No person
shall drive any motor vehicle with any sign, poster, other nontransparent material, or debris, including but not limited to snow,
ice, or frost upon the front windshield or the side wings, or side
or rear windows......which obstructs, obscures, or impairs the
driver’s clear view of the highway ahead or to either side or of any
intersecting highway.” What this means to the everyday driver is
that the little hole you scraped to drive by, just won’t cut it! While
compliance is the goal, the reason is safety! Obviously the chances
of an accident drastically increase as visibility decreases...so why
limit our vision to just a small hole out the front windshield?
There are several ways to clear those windshields, both
mechanically and chemically. A simple ice scraper has been the
preferred method for as long as most people can remember. They
are inexpensive, and easy to find. Another method is simply to
go out 10 minutes before you leave, start your car up, and get the
defroster going! When the windows are clear, you are good to go.
Still another way is to obtain any number of chemical de-icing
sprays that are available at most stores. Don’t pour hot water
on your windows, as the change in temperatures can cause your
window to crack or break!
While we are talking about it, lets not forget about those side and
rear widows. A significant percentage of accidents happen while
backing, so it stands to reason that we need to be able to see out
our back glass as well as the front. Side windows are no different,
no one wants to be struck by a vehicle they couldn’t see when they
pull into an intersection. After you finish with those side windows,
go ahead and hit those side mirrors as well!
All of these suggestions simply take a little extra time, and
sometimes money, but the time and money pale in comparison to
the impact on time and money that an accident will have on you, or
others. As a safe, courteous driver, you owe it to yourself and your
fellow drivers! Thanks for reading, buckle up and be safe!

A Checotah couple was caught drivin’
around town February 16 in a Jeep stolen
from the police department.
Of course, the couple tried to deny that the
Jeep was stolen.
According to the affidavit, a Checotah officer saw the stolen Jeep pull into the driveway
of a residence on Shady Grove Road. After
confirming it was indeed the stolen vehicle,
he saw Lisa Ann Adair, 47, exit the driver’s
seat. 33-year-old Matthew Liss Sneed also
exited the vehicle, but he took off running
and jumped over a fence at the residence.
The officer approached Adair, and she told
him that the Jeep belonged to Sneed. Since
he knew she wasn’t telling the truth, the officer told Sneed to come back over the fence.
He then placed them both under arrest.
Sneed told the officer that he borrowed
the Jeep from a friend and had picked up
Adair. He said she then drove to the residence where the officer arrested them. The
suspects were both taken to jail.
A state trooper took Sneed to jail, and during booking, he found five
bags containing a white substance, four syringes, a glass pipe with residue, three metal pipes with residue and a metal spoon on the man’s
person.
Adair is being charged with knowingly concealing stolen property
and Sneed is being charged with knowingly concealing stolen property, distribution of controlled dangerous substance, bringing contraband into jail and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Sneed’s bond was set at $15,000.
Adair’s bond was set at $10,000.
They are both scheduled to appear in court on March 9, 2015.
Stolen police Jeep?
No, this is ours!
