DOMESTIC ABUSE/VIOLENCE
Poteau men Matthew Carl Cripps, 35, and Jimmy Leon
Bender Jr., 21, were arrested on November 7 after they allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint.
According to the affidavit, a Poteau officer was dispatched to the 200 block of N. Church Street around 11:35
p.m. The victim, who was confined to a wheelchair, said
someone knocked on his door and identified himself as
“Matt.”
The victim opened the door. The man forced his way in,
holding him back at gunpoint, and demanded money. The
suspect left with the victim’s cellphone, brown wallet and
bag containing medications.
The victim said the suspect also threatened to kill him.
The officer tracked the phone through GPS. Police
stopped the men at N. Broadway and Green. When an officer approached the vehicle, he saw the passenger, identified as Bender, try to hand Cripps a cellphone. The officer
told Bender to get out of the car. When he did, the officer
saw a brown wallet in the floorboard.
Both men said they didn’t know who the wallet belonged
to. It contained a card with the victim’s name on it. When
police called the cellphone using the victim’s number, it lit up.
The victim identified Bender from a photo lineup as the man who robbed him.
The officer asked him if he knew anyone named Matt. He said yes, he knew Matthew Cripps. He added that the man called him about 15 minutes before the robbery and said he was going to check on him.
Cripps said he picked up Bender, and the man had two cellphones and a brown
wallet. Cripps said Bender dropped the items in the floorboard when they were
stopped by police.
The officer who transported Bender to jail found a set of digital scales and a
Visa card with the victim’s name on it in the backseat of his patrol car.
A jailer also found a bag containing a crystal substance that tested positive for
meth in Bender’s underwear.
Cripps is being charged with knowingly concealing stolen property. His bond
was set at $60,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 18, 2015.
Bender is being charged with burglary in the first degree, knowingly concealing
stolen property, possession of controlled dangerous substance and possession of
drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $36,000. He is scheduled to appear in
court on November 16, 2015.

More than 100,000 children and youth in the U.S. foster care system are awaiting permanent families. National Adoption Month is a time to raise awareness about the
adoption of children and youth from foster care.
The Children’s Bureau in partnership with AdoptUSKids and Child Welfare Information Gateway sponsors the initiative each November as a way to focus public attention on the urgent need for adoptive families for
children and youth waiting in foster care for a permanent
family. This year’s focus, “Partnering for Permanency,”
builds on the social media theme from last year. A special
web page on Information Gateway’s website helps child
welfare professionals, prospective adoptive parents, and youth partner for permanency. The website contains resources, stories, and videos on topics such as getting started with social media, how to build a recruitment campaign, and how social media impacts child welfare and adoption. The website can be found
at http://www.childwelfare.gov/adoption/nam.

A Wilburton couple was caught doing drugs after a caller
reported some suspicious activity at a vacant residence on
November 7.
According to the affidavit, Latimer County deputies went to
the residence on SE Damon Valley around 10:50 a.m. As they
approached the vacant house, they could hear people inside.
A man and woman opened the door, and the deputies
asked them to step outside. Both Henry Joseph Ketcher, 45,
and 46-year-old Vickie Jo Deatherage were acting extremely
nervous.
Deatherage said she had her mom’s permission to be in
the house. Police asked if they could search the residence to
make sure no one else was inside. Deatherage said, “Sure, go
ahead.”
When a deputy entered the house, he immediately noticed
a glass smoking pipe with burn marks on a small table in the
living room. The deputy asked the couple if they were going
to smoke the pipe. Deatherage told him Ketcher had brought
it from his house.
Deputies placed the couple under arrest.
Ketcher resisted and kept his hands clenched. When he finally opened his hands, a silver spoon without a handle fell to
the ground. Another deputy entered the house, and she found
a needle cap, a syringe, Q-tips, and a plastic bag containing
several pieces of cotton.
The couple was transported to jail. Both subjects also had
illegal items on their person. During booking, a deputy found
a marijuana cigarette in Ketcher’s pocket. Deatherage had a
tourniquet in her pocket, and some pieces of cotton that tested positive for meth, and a spoon in her makeup bag.
Deatherage is being charged with possession of controlled
dangerous substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Ketcher is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer. Their bonds were set at $10,000, and
they are scheduled to appear in court on November 17, 2015.

A federal complaint was filed charging Richard
Todd Carsins, 46, of Edmond, with pretending to be
an employee of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS),
in seeking to gain access to the property of Edmond
North High School.
Earlier on October 9, Carsins arrived on the campus of Edmond North High School and represented
himself to school administrative personnel that he
was an employee of the Central Intelligence Agency
and the Department of Homeland Security and was
tasked with patrolling the campus. After questioning,
school personnel became suspicious about his claim,
and contacted law enforcement. The Edmond Police
Department and members of the Oklahoma City FBI
Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) responded. Following an investigation, Carsins was arrested for impersonating a federal officer.
Carsins appeared that afternoon in federal court and was ordered to remain in custody
until his preliminary and detention hearing, which was set for 10:00a.m. on Wednesday,
October 14, 2015.
If convicted, Carsins faces up to three years in prison.

Grant woman Sheena Diane Neese,
30, apparently isn’t a very good houseguest. When she spent the night with a
man on November 4, she allegedly stole
his mother’s vehicle.
A deputy was dispatched to the victim’s residence in the 300 block of W.
Cincinnati in Fort Towson on November 6 shortly after 11 p.m. The woman
said her son brought a girl, identified as
Neese, home to stay the night. The victim said she went to bed and when she
woke up, Neese and her vehicle were
gone.
The woman went to work, but the vehicle was still gone when she came home. Her son said he never gave
Neese permission to use the car.
Police found the vehicle at a nearby casino. A deputy disabled the
vehicle and waited. Neese came outside and tried to start the car.
When it didn’t work, she went back into the casino and continued to
gamble. When the deputy approached her, she said she was planning
on returning the car. She said she had permission to use it.
During the investigation, Neese told the police the man she stayed
with was stalking her and had choked her before. An officer asked her
if she ever reported it. She said no. She then said she and the man
had done drugs a couple weeks before.
The deputy looked in her purse and he found a bottle containing
a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana. He also
found three bags containing a crystal-like substance that field-tested
positive for meth, some needles, a pair of scissors and some pills.
Neese is being charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, two

A Spencerville man was arrested in Pushmataha County after a
state trooper stopped him for defective tail lights on November 5.
29-year-old Trinity Cole Beckwith also had some marijuana in his
ride.
According to the affidavit, the trooper was traveling north on US
271 south of Antlers toward 8th Street when he noticed a white
truck pull out in front of him around 5:42 p.m. The truck’s tail lights
weren’t working, so the trooper stopped the vehicle.
When the trooper asked the driver for his driver’s license and insurance, he immediately noticed the odor of marijuana. He asked
the driver, identified as Beckwith, what the smell was coming from
inside of the truck. Beckwith admitted that he had just smoked some
weed.
When the trooper asked Beckwith where the marijuana was, the
man handed over a smoking pipe with a burnt substance inside.
The trooper asked Beckwith if he had any more weed.
Beckwith handed him a cigarette box containing a green leafy substance that field-tested positive for marijuana. Both the pipe and
cigarette box had been located under some random papers next to
the driver.
The trooper placed Beckwith under arrest and transported him to
jail.
Beckwith is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous
substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia while using a
motor vehicle, failure to comply with compulsory insurance law or
failure to produce security verification form and driver not wearing
seatbelt. He was released on a $2,282 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on December 9, 2015.

A woman called police on November 6 after a pony-tailed man broke into her home
while she was sleeping.
She didn’t know the man, but she was able to identify him in a photo lineup.
A Coalgate City police officer was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of N.
Finney Street around 12:40 a.m. to investigate the break-in. The victim said she was
sleeping when a man with a long ponytail walked into her home. She told the officer
she had never seen him before, but she would be able to identify him.
According to the police report, the officer thought he knew the man who she was
describing, so he printed several pictures of men for her to review, including one of
27-year-old Lon Adam Smith. Sure enough, she pointed at Smith and told the officer,
“This is the man who entered my home.”
Police searched the area for the suspect, eventually ending up at a residence on N.
Broadway. When they knocked on the door at the residence, Smith answered it. They
asked him to step outside and immediately placed him under arrest. The man was
then transported to the Coal County Jail.
Smith agreed to speak to officers. He didn’t say much, but when they asked him if he had entered the victim’s home,
he shook his head yes.
Smith is being charged with breaking and entering with unlawful intent. He was released on a personal recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on November 19, 2015.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol
This month’s Tips is less of a tip
than it is a serious request for help
from you, the motoring public. I would like to make a personal
appeal to each and every reader who sees this to help us Troopers
try to eliminate one of the toughest jobs that we ever have to do. It
is something that everyone who drives can have an impact on.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is tasked with the investigation
of motor vehicle accidents on the public roadways outside the city
limits in the State of Oklahoma. In the course of this, we investigate
a huge number of fatalities. For each fatality victim, it is the duty
of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to personally notify the next of
kin. For each life lost, there is a knock on a door somewhere, where
an OHP Trooper has to deliver news that will forever change the
lives of the person or persons on the other side. Sadly, these knocks
on the door could have been prevented by somebody involved in
the accident. Sometimes it’s the person who died whose unsafe or
unlawful action caused the accident that took their life. Often times
it is not.
Each and every Trooper you see working the roads every day
has had to knock on that door. I think if you asked, every single
one would tell you this is the worst aspect of our job. Trying to
prevent this is one of the reasons we do what we do. We know if we
work hard, we can stop some of these knocks. We also know the
motoring public can help us stop some of these knocks as well. The
following are just a few ways for you to do your part to help.
First and foremost, obey the law. It really doesn’t matter if
your personal opinion of the rules of the road don’t make sense,
or shouldn’t apply in certain situations. Each one of them is
designed for us to travel safely on the road. Slow down, and give
your full, undivided attention to the road. Watch out for the
other driver. When you see something happening ahead of you,
slow down! “I was late”, or “I was texting” just doesn’t cut it as
responses to a grieving family when they ask why this happened. Is
it something you could live with if it was your reason for taking a
life?
The people on the other side of that knock aren’t the only ones
affected by the experience. We Troopers have all held strangers
as the initial horror and shock of the news takes hold of them. We
have all prayed with families we just met, and asked if we could
have done more to prevent it. Each and every day we are trying
to stop The Knock. Now I’m asking you to help us. Thanks for
reading, buckle up, and be safe!

A Durant man seemed intent on burning down a Cartwright
residence on November 5. When firefighters arrived to put out
the blaze, he threw more stuff into the fire and tried to turn
off the water. He had to be physically detained until police arrived.
According to the police report, Bryan County deputies were
dispatched to the 2500 block of Sandcreek Road around 8:32
p.m. Firefighters on scene told them they were detaining a
man who was impeding their efforts to stop the inferno.
The fire chief told the deputies when they arrived on scene
to put out the fire, 20-year-old Nickiols Parish Pettry started
causing all kinds of trouble. It seemed like he didn’t want the
fire to be stopped. He started turning the knobs that pump the
engine and shut the pump down, causing the water to stop
pumping.
Another fireman told police that while they were trying to put out the fire, Pettry rolled up
a 3x5 piece of carpet and threw it into the flames. The firefighter said he had to stop battling
the blaze so he could physically restrain Pettry until backup arrived.
Pettry said he started a fire in the furnace because he was cold, but there was no fire in the
furnace -- the fire marshal determined the fire started in two different places. Neither one of
those places was the furnace.
Pettry is being charged with first-degree arson and endangering human life during arson.
His bond was set at $250,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on December 9, 2015.

Steven Ray Cole, 30, was arrested for suspicion of DUI after he made an illegal right turn on November 12.
The Atoka man didn’t have time for any tests -- he was just ready to get to jail.
Around 1:43 a.m., an Atoka officer noticed a black truck that was driving
“erratically.” He followed the vehicle, and when it came to the red light at 13th
and US Highway 69, the driver turned into the lane farthest from the curb. The
driver then made an abrupt lane change into the turn lane before taking a crazy
turn onto Melba Avenue, according to the affidavit.
The officer stopped the vehicle at Melba and Elm, and made contact with the
driver, identified as Cole. Cole smelled like alcohol. He admitted to having a few beers.
When the officer explained to the man why he pulled him over and how he should have turned,
Cole replied, “Hell, I don’t even do that when I’m sober.”
The officer asked Cole to exit the vehicle so he could administer standard field sobriety tests.
Cole wasn’t about taking any tests. He said, “Hell, let’s not waste time doing these tests. I know I’m
going to jail.”
The officer still administered the tests, and sure enough, they revealed Cole was going to jail. The
officer placed the man under arrest and asked if he would take the state’s test. Cole was just ready to
get his punishment over with. He told the officer, “I ain’t taking no f------ test. Let’s just go to jail.”
Well, okay!
Cole was transported to jail, and he is being charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the
influence of alcohol. His bond was set at $25,00. He is scheduled to appear in court on November
18, 2015.

Broken Bow man Rance Dewayne Childs, 32, was arrested
November 8 after police found him trespassing with a stolen
gun and some pills.
Convicted felon Childs said it was OK for him to have the
gun, because he removed the firing pin.
According to the affidavit, a man contacted the McCurtain
County Sheriff’s Office and told a deputy that a man was
trespassing onto private property and Weyerhaeuser-owned
lease land. The caller said his friend was following a camouflaged-clad man who had arrived at the property by canoe.
The friend looked in the canoe and saw a shotgun barrel
sticking out of a blue bag. The bag also contained numerous
tools used for electrical work. The items were marked with
“Wild Child.”
The deputy knew that was Childs’ nickname.
Police went to the location and found Childs on the property. A deputy placed the man
under arrest for trespassing and found a prescription bottle containing several pills on the
man’s person. The bottle didn’t have Childs’s name on it.
Police found the canoe Childs arrived in and located the gun and various tools including
pliers, cutting tools, a drill and a screwdriver. A deputy checked the serial number on the gun
-- it came back as stolen. The gun was documented as stolen along with eight other firearms
in a burglary.
Childs said that on November 9, he met a group of guys who asked him if he knew anything about guns. One of the guys then handed him the firearm and asked him to refurbish
it. Childs said he knew he wasn’t supposed to have a gun, so he removed the firing pin. That
way, if he got caught with the firearm, he wouldn’t be charged with having it.
It didn’t work.
Childs is being charged with possession of firearm after former felony conviction, unlawful
possession of CDS without a prescription and trespassing on private land primarily devoted
to farming/ranching/forestry. His bond was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in
court on December 22, 2015.

POSS OF MARIJUANA/para
The officer told him to drop the firearm.
Lane instead took off running. He eventually threw
the gun at the officer. He didn’t stop, though. Lane continued to run, ignoring officer commands. Eventually,
the officer took the man to the ground and placed him
under arrest. Lane continued to resist despite being
placed in hand restraints.
The officer noticed that he smelled like alcohol, his
eyes were bloodshot and watery, and his speech was
slurred.
During the investigation, the officer found several
discharged shotgun shells in the man’s driveway and
more firearms inside of his home.
One of the battle re-enactors told the officer he had been hit in the arm with a
projectile from Lane’s gun. Lane also allegedly shot through a tent on site that
belonged to the historical society, causing $2,500 in damage.
Lane is being charged with assault and battery with deadly weapon, reckless
conduct with firearm and resisting an officer. His bond was set at $100,000, and
he is scheduled to appear in court on January 7, 2016.
This means war!
