A late night party full of booze and marijuana
turned sour when one of the revelers grabbed a machete and went after his friends.
Cartwright man Thomas William Wenger, 47, was
arrested October 4 for allegedly attacking his fellow
partiers with the deadly weapon.
According to the police report, a Leflore County
deputy was dispatched to a residence on Cline Road
at approximately 8:51 p.m. for an assault involving
a machete. Shortly after, another man called from
the same location and said he was being held at gun
point.
When police arrived, they made contact with two
men – one was holding his hand, which was dripping with blood. They told the officers, “He’s over there.”
Wenger walked out from behind a truck. He told the deputy he only grabbed the
machete for self-defense, because someone was choking him.
Wenger said they were all drinking and smoking marijuana.
One of the men said he and Wenger were having a good time, and Wenger took
someone home. When he returned with music blaring in his truck, he was a different man. He started throwing beer cans around and yelling.
The man asked Wenger, “Why are you acting crazy?” Wenger replied, “You
haven’t seen crazy yet.”
The man said Wenger started to walk toward him, so he wrapped his arms
around him. When Wenger said he was OK, he let the man go.
Wenger wasn’t OK, though. He grabbed a machete that was stuck in a nearby
log and went after the man. He hit the man’s finger, then turned his attention to
another partier. Wenger hit the man’s vehicle, leaving a deep cut in the metal.
The first victim said he went inside, grabbed his gun and called 911. When he
walked back outside, he saw Wenger throwing his stuff in the fire.
The victims said the stayed behind the truck with the gun until police arrived,
but they never pointed it at Wenger.
The man was placed under arrest and transported to jail.
Wenger is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and
public intoxication. His bond was set at $6,500, and he is scheduled to appear in
court on October 29, 2015.

A Pittsburg man was arrested October 7 after a night of drinking nearly
turned deadly.
59-year-old John Anthony Howell told police he didn’t remember anything.
Around 1:30 a.m., a Pittsburg County deputy was dispatched to the 200
block of True Grit Trail because a man had pulled a gun on some people.
Three men at the scene told the deputy they had been drinking with Howell all night.
At one point, Howell tried to leave, but the men told him to stay because he was too
intoxicated to drive. Howell got in his truck anyway, but he backed over a man’s foot and
ran into a tree.
Howell exited his vehicle and the men found him crouched down in some bushes holding a gun. He told one of the men, “Y’all are going to find out I’m not playing.”
The men were able to get the gun away from him, and one of them hit Howell during
the altercation.
Howell then took off walking.
One of the men showed the deputy where Howell was kneeling when the man took his
gun away. The deputy found a shotgun that was chambered. The safety was also off. There
were broken twigs and a trail of blood that led to Howell’s truck, but the man was nowhere
to be found. They started walking toward Howell’s house trying to find him, but soon dispatch advised the deputy Howell had returned to the original location.
Police found Howell walking down the road covered in blood. They placed him in handcuffs and asked him why he was so bloody. Howell said he was very drunk and decided to
walk home after an argument. He said he kept tripping and falling, and that’s how he was
injured.
When police told him what the witnesses said, he replied he couldn’t remember any of
that.
After Howell was treated for his injuries, he told a deputy he was a retired veteran and
prone to blackouts. He couldn’t remember anything after getting into an argument – he
said the next thing he remembered was walking down the road and falling down.
He admitted that he was a convicted felon.
Howell is being charged with feloniously pointing firearm, possession of firearms after
conviction or during probation and public intoxication. His bond was set at $25,000, and
he is scheduled to appear in court on October 16, 2015.

A traffic stop for not using a turn signal on October 3 quickly turned serious
when an officer found meth in the vehicle and three people went to jail.
According to the affidavit, a McCurtain police officer was driving down Nevin
Street shortly after 5 p.m when he saw a car turn left onto North Allen Street
without using a turn signal. The officer stopped the car and made contact with
the driver, Sallisaw man Derek Christenberry.
The 22-year-old seemed very nervous and he was talking really fast without
making a whole lot of sense.
The officer then grabbed his K-9 and walked the dog around the car. The dog alerted to the
presence of drugs.
The driver and passengers, Sallisaw woman Katleyn Lee Ann Tuck, 21, and 22-year-old Daryn
Blaylock of McCurtain were asked to step out of the vehicle. Inside the car, police found a package
containing a substance that tested positive for meth.
In Tuck’s purse, an officer found a small tin containing marijuana, a pipe, scooping straw, and
grinder.
Another bag of what appeared to be stomped-on meth was found on the ground near Blaylock.
All three suspects admitted they wouldn’t be able to pass a drug test. They were placed under
arrest and transported to jail.
Christenberry is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance. He was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 20, 2015.
Blaylock is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance. Bond information and court date were unavailable at time of print.
Tuck is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. She was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in
court on October 27, 2015.

A Hugo man was arrested October 6 after
he admitted to hitting a man in the shoulder
with a scythe during an argument that spun
out of control.
Gary Leete Jones, 51, said it was in selfdefense.
According to the affidavit, a Hugo officer
was dispatched to the hospital at approximately 10:40 p.m. due to a stabbing. The
victim said he and his mother lived at a residence in the 300 block of S. Eighth Street
with Jones. He told the officer Jones stabbed
him with a “5-foot pole with a foot long axe blade on it.”
He said Jones was still at the residence.
When police arrived at the home, Jones walked outside. He agreed
to speak to police and told an officer he and the victim started arguing because he told the victim he had 30 days to get out of the house.
Jones said the victim tried to hit him with a baseball bat. He then
accidentally hit the man in the shoulder with a scythe in self-defense.
Jones admitted that he had been drinking that night and he
smelled strongly of alcohol.
Inside the house, police found the bat and sickle in the kitchen.
Jones said he jokingly told the victim to go get his bat while they
were arguing, and the victim did.
When the officer asked Jones why he didn’t call the police, the man
didn’t give the officer a reasonable answer. He said it was due to the
victim’s mother’s mental health issues, but he wouldn’t explain.
Jones was arrested and locked up in jail.
The next day, the officer went back to the hospital to speak with
the victim. The victim said the two men started arguing about a bowl
and during the argument, Jones told him he had 30 days to get out.
The man admitted to grabbing his bat but said he only did so because Jones picked up the sickle and came after him. He said he was
trying to defend himself from Jones.
Jones is being charged with assault and battery with a deadly
weapon.

Clayton woman Rebecca Autumn Cheyenne Martin, 23, was
arrested October 3 after she left a party still intoxicated.
A Clayton police officer found her riding around with a large
dog and two guns.
According to the police report, the officer stopped Martin’s
vehicle around 2:40 a.m. after a caller reported a reckless driver to dispatch. When he made contact with Martin, he immediately smelled a strong smell of alcohol and saw two guns in the
seat and floorboard of her car, along with a large dog.
Martin told the officer in slurred speech she had just left a
party where she had been in a fight and someone shoved her in
a fire;she had burn marks on her hands.
The officer attempted to administer sobriety tests, but the
woman couldn’t stand without swaying and couldn’t hold her
head up.
The officer told Martin she was under arrest. She screamed, “This is bulls---. I’m almost
home.”
When the officer asked her to stay calm and get in the patrol car, she asked for a second to
cool off.
The officer asked her what was wrong. She replied, “I’m having a sh---- night, and you
know this is bulls---.”
Five minutes later, the officer again asked the woman to get in the car. She told him she was
getting her hoodie and her dog and she was leaving.
She started walking back to her car, but the officer placed her in handcuffs after a brief
struggle. A relative arrived to pick up the dog.
The officer removed the rifle from the vehicle. There wasn’t a round in the chamber, but the
gun was loaded. The pistol was a B.B. gun.
On the way into the jail, Martin kept screaming and at one point, she kicked the office in
the knee. She was eventually booked into jail and locked in a cell.
Martin is being charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol,
carrying firearm while under the influence, transporting loaded firearm in motor vehicle,
resisting an officer and battery/assault and battery on police officer. She was released on a
$1,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on November 18, 2015.

Powderly, Texas, man Jason Wayne Atnip, 38, allegedly attempted to steal several electronic devices from
Walmart on October 3. He ran away when an employee
questioned him, but he didn’t get very far.
According to the affidavit, a Durant officer was dispatched to Walmart in the 3700 block of W. Man Street
at approximately 2:47 p.m. due to a larceny in progress.
He was advised the suspect had left the scene running
toward Harmony drive.
En route to the location, the officer was advised a state
trooper had caught the man in the 3700 block of University Blvd.
The officer arrived at the location and saw a man
matching the description of the suspect in handcuffs. The man, later identified as
Atnip, admitted he just left Walmart but said he did nothing wrong.
The officer placed him under arrest.
A Walmart employee positively identified Atnip as the culprit. He said he saw
Atnip push a shopping cart past the registers toward the exit. The employee approached him and noticed several electronic items with sensor devices still on
them. When the employee asked to see a receipt, Atnip took off running.
The items the man attempted to steal totaled $946.94.
Atnip said he never heard the employee say anything to him when he left the
store. He told the officer his wife purchased several items and told him to take them
outside while she continued to shop.
The officer asked if he selected any of the items himself and put them in the cart.
Atnip said he didn’t remember, but security showed the man selecting two computers and putting them in his cart.
Atnip is being charged with larceny of merchandise from retailer. He was released on a $1,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on November 18, 2015.

If you’re not feeling well, near a hospital is the perfect place to
be. So that means if you’re disobeying the law, near a prison is right
where you should be, right?
Or maybe it’s the wrong place.
Just ask Dallas man Christopher John Tooley. The 50-year-old
Texan was arrested after drugs and paraphernalia were found in his
vehicle during a traffic stop near McAlford Prison.
According to the police report, an Atoka County deputy stopped
the southbound Tooley at approximately 2 p.m. on US 69 just south
of the prison because he saw the man’s vehicle swerve off the road
three times.
When the deputy made contact with Tooley, the man seemed very nervous. So nervous, in
fact, the deputy stated you could see the man’s heart beat in the vein of his neck.
The deputy as about to find out why the man was so nervous. He walked his K-9 around
the truck, and the dog alerted.
The deputy asked the man if he had anything such as drugs or weapons in his vehicle.
Tooley admitted there was an ounce of meth in his toolbox.
The deputy found a large bag and a small bag containing a crystal substance that tested
positive for meth. Another bag containing a pipe, digital scales and a brownish substance
that also tested positive for methamphetamine.
The deputy placed Tooley under arrest and transported him to jail.
Tooley is being charged with trafficking in illegal drugs and unlawful possession of drug
paraphernalia. His bond was set at $100,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on
October 21, 2015.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money or
favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting
offi cer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

A wanted Hannah man was arrested for a warrant and for what he
was packing in his underwear on October 7.
Don’t worry – it was just some scales and sh*t.
According to the affidavit, a Checotah officer was traveling west on
Spaulding Street at approximately 2:40 p.m. when he passed a black
car traveling east on Spaulding. He noticed Jerry Dale Breshears, 28,
was sitting in the passenger seat.
The officer had seen Breshears on an earlier call and was advised
the man had an active warrant for his arrest.
The officer turned around and stopped the vehicle at NW Second
and W. Spaulding. He immediately placed the man under arrest and
searched him for illegal items or weapons.
During the pat down, the officer noticed an odd bulge in Breshears’s front pocket. Since he
obviously wasn’t happy to see the officer, the officer asked the man what it was.
Breshears replied, “Some scales and some sh*t.”
The officer put on some rubber gloves and retrieved the bulge. Breshears was definitely
packing, but thankfully, no sh*t was involved.
The officer found a sock hidden in the man’s underwear containing a set of digital scales,
some plastic baggies and a baggy containing a clear crystal substance that appeared to be
meth.
The man was transported to jail and locked up.
Breshears is being charged with distribution of controlled dangerous substance including
possession with intent to distribute and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond
was set at $75,000.

ROSE
Broken Bow man Levi Shine Rose, 35, apparently had nothing
better to do on October 8 than to stand at the Highway 98 and Highway 70 intersection in Valliant holding a large knife.
Rose was arrested after he tried to stab an officer.
Shortly after 10 a.m., a McCurtain County deputy made contact
with Rose. The man was holding a large silver knife in his hand, but
he held it against his arm as though he was trying to hide it from the
deputy.
The deputy stepped out of his car and said, “Put the knife down,
buddy.”
Rose asked him if he was a cop.
According to the police report, when the deputy said he was; Rose
took off running.
The deputy chased after him and a Valliant officer arrived to assist. The officer drew his gun
and told Rose to put the knife down.
Rose said, “Just shoot me.”
He told the deputy he was going to stab him so the officer would shoot him. No one was
shot, but Rose tried to run off again. When the deputy grabbed his arm, Rose swung the knife
at him. After a brief struggle, Rose was in handcuffs and the knife was out of his hands.
Inside the man’s backpack, the deputy found a pouch containing cotton balls, a rubber
strap and two hypodermic needles.
Rose is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, carrying weapons, resisting an officer and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
