convicted
Attorney General Mike Hunter announced
a jury has convicted Ernest Lewis of first-degree murder and has been sentenced to life
in prison for the 1984 murder of a co-worker.
Jurors only took 45 minutes to deliberate
before reaching the unanimous verdict.
Lewis was originally charged in 1984 in the
shooting death of Johnny Smith at the K.C.S.
Lumber Company in Idabel. The case was
later dismissed because of lack of evidence.
With no additional leads, the case went cold.
Attorney General Hunter re-filed the first
degree murder charges last July after the
Criminal Justice Division in his office found
new DNA evidence was discovered in 2011
after Smith’s body was exhumed. Investigators found the samples from the
crime scene matched the DNA taken from the exhumed body.
“The successful outcome of this trial couldn’t have happened without
the relentless commitment of attorneys and investigators working together
to bring justice to the Smith family,” Attorney General Hunter said. “Though
today’s conviction won’t bring their loved one back, I hope the family that
waited all of these years for someone to be held accountable finally has the
closure they deserve.
“All convictions are hard to secure, but cold cases are among the most
difficult. I appreciate the great work of the attorneys and investigators in our
Criminal Justice Division and agents with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for solving this case. My office is dedicated to partnering with
statewide law enforcement to handle the most challenging cases communities face.”

Three Wichita Men Paid for Athletic Shoes
with Counterfeit Money
Three Wichita men were indicted on charges of
making counterfeit money and using it to pay for
athletic shoes, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister
said.
Douglas D. Blocker, 21, Wichita, Cornelius D.
Wilson, 22, Wichita, and Traevon A. McGairty, 22,
Wichita, are charged with one count of counterfeiting and one count of passing counterfeit currency. In addition, Blocker is charged with another

The indictment alleges the defendants used a photocopy machine to
make counterfeit $20 bills. In one count, Blocker is alleged to have met a
victim at the Towne West shopping center and paid him $480 in counterfeit bills for four pairs of Jordan athletic shoes. In another count, the three
defendants are alleged to have met another victim at Towne West and
paid him $520 in counterfeit bills for three pairs of athletic shoes.
If convicted, they face a penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty MCCURTAIN COUNTY 5 | AUGUST 2018
august is back to school
safety month
As summer draws to a close and
children start heading back to school,
family life can get pretty hectic. It’s
important to remember – and share
with your children – some key tips that
will help keep them safe and healthy
throughout the school year.
Getting to School
Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the bus to school, it is vitally
important that they – and the motorists around them – take proper safety precautions.
Walkers:
• Walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk and you must walk in the street,
walk facing traffic
• Before crossing the street, stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars
are coming
• Never dart out in front of a parked car
• Parents: Practice walking to school with your child, crossing streets at cros
walks when available
• Never walk while texting or talking on the phone
• Do not walk while using headphones
Bike Riders:
• Always wear a helmet that is fitted and secured properly
• Children need to know the rules of the road: Ride single file on the right side
of the road, come to a complete stop before crossing the street and walk the
bike across
• Watch for opening car doors and other hazards
• Use hand signals when turning
• Wear bright-colored clothing
Bus Riders:
• Teach children the proper way to get on and off the bus
• Line up 6 feet away from the curb as the bus approaches
• If seat belts are available, buckle up
• Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing
• Do not cross in front of the bus if possible, or walk at least 10 feet ahead until
you can see the other drivers
Drivers, Share the Road:
• Don’t block crosswalks
• Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and take extra care in school zones
• Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians
• Never pass a bus loading or unloading children
• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop
far enough back to allow them to safely enter and exit the bus

Antlers Man Sentenced To 30 Months
For Possession Of Firearm, Ammunition
Charles Allen Bailey, 50, of Antlers,
was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment and 3 years supervised release for
Felon In Possession Of Firearm & Ammunition.
The charge arose from an investigation by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives.
The Indictment alleged that on or about
July 18, 2017, Bailey, having been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year,
knowingly possessed in and affecting
commerce a firearm and ammunition
which have been shipped and transported in interstate commerce.
United States Attorney Brian J. Kuester said, “Working with local,
state, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies to combat violent
crime is a priority of the Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney’s Offices. One of the federal laws available to us to carry out that priority
prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms. The defendant in
this case violated that federal law and is being held accountable accordingly. This joint effort by agents from the OBN, ATF and members
of this office is an example of interagency team work that occurs on a
daily basis in the Eastern District of Oklahoma and across the country.
When agencies work together, the public benefits.”
Bailey will remain in custody pending transportation to the designated federal facility at which the non-paroleable sentence will be served.

someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN!
Medical marijuana has been approved by the people
of Oklahoma, yet our governmental officials and people
who think they know what’s best for us have once
again decided to rewrite what we voted on. What’s
your opinion on this issue?
These comments are only just a fraction we had on our Facebook Page. Read
more by going to our page.
___________________________________________________________________
Ryan S: This was a very badly written bill, and no one wanted to
acknowledge it. So you got what you voted for.
Robert S: I want everything I voted for, no changes just what I
voted for. Go after Meth if you want to help Oklahoma
Matthew M: I knew exactly what I voted for and, if they would’ve
left it alone, there wouldn’t be any problems.
Chris D: Actually Ryan Scott what we voted for was a medication
that had no regulations nor profit margin for big pharma. A natural
solution to the chemicals we have been forced to take. It defined
that we were able to have both smokable and edible forms.
Chris R: The bill was written quite intelligently. The “reefer
madness” stigma is a load of hogwash. Cannabis is far from
dangerous and for the inexperienced the concentrates and edibles
may well be far too potent.
Kris C: Only people who claim 788 was poorly written are
brainwashed with government propaganda. You people are
partially responsible for the opioid epidemic FYI
Rich C: It wasnt written to ban the smoking of the medication. It
was a very broad explanation of how it would be presented to the
public that ill agree with. But making it on the terms they now are
presenting is way off of the presentation that most understood.
Richard J: ...the state effectively kept mmj illegal with their rules,
and that goes 100% against what was voted in. A pharmacist will
lose their license if they dispense, and it would shoot the cost up
dramatically.
Darci T: It’s very simple. The people voted for a policy that gives
the patient and their doctor the power to decide about dosage
and the best method to take the medicine. The patient and their
doctor. The state ruled against the will and the vote of the people.
Whether you’re for mmj or against it, the state has gone against the
vote. It’s wrong and brings the legitimacy of the state government
in question. Mmj is a medicine and people have a right to use it.
Will it be mis-used? Yes. Most good things are misused but we
don’t outlaw them bc of misuse, examples: opioids, food stamps,
welfare, unemployment, SS disability, Medicare, etc.
Erica V: Agree! Well said.
JC J: Actually, we voted for a law that allowed the state Health
Dept. to enact bureaucratic regulations, which is what they are
doing.
Rich C: Bingo
Howard C: And all medicines are regulated which, was called for
in your ballot question
Dylan M: The reason we live in a democracy is to allow those
to vote for their own freedoms, as we should be governed by the
people- not by unelected officials on boards who have ties with the
lawmakers. They knew it would pass, but this is exactly why Mary
Fallin didn’t want to allow a special session in the house, she knew
they would put extreme measures in place.
Mike G: We live in a constitutional Republic ..
Dorothy T: She knew exactly what she was doing when she
appointed the panel she did. She knew what she was going to do
the moment she decided not to hold a special session. I can’t even
put on Facebook what I think of her!

Hugo Police are on the lookout for a man
authorities say is a suspect in a shooting that
happened in Hugo on July 12.
A warrant has been issued in Choctaw
County for Tarsey A. King, 18, of Hugo, on
charges of assault and battery with a deadly
weapon, and robbery, first degree.
According to a Hugo Police Department
press release, on July 12, at approximately
11:17 pm, a call was received by the Choctaw County Communications Center in reference to a shooting victim at a residence located at 301 South 6th St. Officers arrived on
scene at approximately 11:18pm and made
contact with the 21-year old victim identified
as Ethan Adams. They determined that he had been shot in the upper torso
and began administering first aid until EMS arrived.
Adams was taken by ambulance to the Hugo Airport and airlifted to a Plano
Emergency Center in serious condition.
The person believed to be responsible for shooting Adams is identified as
King. King fled in a small gray Ford 4-door sedan before officers arrived on
scene.
King is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached
by the public. Anyone coming into contact with King should notify their local law enforcement agency and observe from a position of safety. Anyone
aiding, abetting or harboring King will be charged, without exception, with a
