MOMMY DEAREST
A Broken Bow woman is paying the small price of
four years in prison for permanently disabling her baby
in 2020.
Kaira Leigh Wilson, 35, of Broken Bow, was sentenced
to 48 months in prison for one count of Child Abuse in
Indian Country.
The charges arose from an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Idabel Police Department.
On January 11, 2024, Wilson, was found guilty by a
federal jury at trial of the charge.
According to investigators, on March 12, 2020, law enforcement responding to a 911
call at an Idabel residence discovered an unresponsive 6-month-old infant. EMS responders began life-saving measures and rushed the infant to the hospital for acute
respiratory failure. Medical professionals successfully resuscitated and stabilized the infant. Medical scans revealed fresh injuries consistent with non-accidental trauma, including a subdural hematoma and extensive retinal hemorrhages. The infant also sustained
vision loss in one eye. A subsequent investigation revealed that prior to the 911 call, a
witness in the residence observed Wilson throw the infant against a wall.
The crime occurred in McCurtain County, within the boundaries of the Choctaw Nation
Reservation of Oklahoma, in the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
“I commend the work of the first responders and medical staff in diagnosing and treating the defenseless victim and want to thank the investigators for tirelessly working to
determine how the injuries were inflicted,” said United States Attorney Christopher J.
Wilson. “I also applaud the Assistant United States Attorneys who effectively presented
the case at trial and compassionately advocated for the victim and the victim’s family
at the sentencing hearing. We recognize the discretion of the Court in sentencing and
respect the decision.”
Wilson will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending transportation to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility to serve a non-paroleable sentence of
incarceration.

AROUND THE NATION
Foiled again
During the early morning hours of November 7, A
Brevard County (Florida) sheriff’s deputy was out on a
leisurely patrol in a wooded area when he came upon
Matthew Korecky who quickly grabbed a piece of aluminum foil, along with a bag containing a green powdery substance that he retrieved from a yellow box near
his feet.
As soon as the confronted Korecky, he tried to hide
the items under his body, hoping the deputy hadn’t seen his actions. Unfortunately for
him, he wasn’t quick enough and the deputy detained Korecky and collected the unknown items. As things progressed, it didn’t take long before the deputy located not only
the drugs he was trying to hide, but more drugs and a firearm that had been reported
stolen out of a nearby police station’s jurisdiction.
In total, Korecky had 17.4g of methamphetamine, 4 pills identified as muscle relaxers,
and approximately 8.3 grams of Fentanyl, which if put into a lethal dose would be enough
to kill just over 4,000 people.
To top it all off, Korecky is a convicted felon and is unable to legally possess firearms,
but clearly he doesn’t obey the law.
The good news is that Korecky is now residing in the big house on no bond, as he was
arrested for Trafficking in Fentanyl, Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession
of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Use/
Display Firearm or Carry Conceal Firearm
During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. MARY

AROUND THE STATE
Can you shoot at a drone? – Nope, and here is a
recent incident about it.
On Nov. 6, around 5:15 p.m., Officers responded to a call about shots fired behind a church at
9120 E. Broken Arrow Expressway.
Security at the church said they saw a man
walking near their building, then heard a gunshot
ring out from the suspect’s location.
Officers arrived and quickly found the suspect, Blake Butler, on a nearby trail.
Butler admitted to having a gun concealed in his waistband. Blake surrendered
without incident, and police were able to recover the semi-automatic pistol.
While determining if Butler was just randomly firing a pistol or if he had a specific target, Officers located a man who said he was flying his drone in preparation
of a nearby event. The man said Butler pulled out a pistol and fired at the drone.
When we questioned Butler about it, he told officers that he thought the drone
was following him, so he shot at it.
Blake Butler was arrested for Reckless Discharge of a Firearm and Possession
of a Firearm AFCF. No one was injured in this incident, including the UAS.

REPRESENT!
In the inaugural year of the Attorney General’s Outstanding Officer of the Year Award, Attorney General
Gentner Drummond has announced four regional winners, one of whom will be named next month as the
statewide Officer of the Year for 2024.
Drummond launched the initiative in May to highlight the extraordinary work of law enforcement officers
across Oklahoma. With 44 nominations submitted to
the Office of the Attorney General, judges – comprised
of city, county, tribal and state criminal justice professionals – selected regional winners from across the
state.
“These four individuals reflect the courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment
that is representative of Oklahoma’s law enforcement community,” Drummond said. “I
congratulate the regional winners for their extraordinary work and thank them for their
steadfast dedication to public safety.”
The Southeast Region winner is– Deputy Austin Murray
On Aug. 11 of this year, Bryan County Sheriff’s Deputy Murray responded to a domestic
disturbance concerning a man in a pickup truck who had chased his fleeing wife and
two children. The pickup had struck the wife’s vehicle, forcing her to crash into a tree off
a highway near Achille. Murray drew his pistol as soon as the suspect, Wesley Buford,
reached for a gun tucked inside his pants. Buford jumped behind his truck and the two
exchanged gunfire. Murray was hit three times before he was able to get a clear shot at
the suspect. Buford collapsed and surrendered shortly thereafter. Murray, who has been
with the department for nearly four years, recently received the Medal of Valor from the
Oklahoma Sheriffs Association.
All 44 nominees and the four regional winners will be recognized at a reception Dec. 2
at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The state Officer
of the Year for 2024 will be announced at that time.
Good luck, Deputy Murray!

DECEMBER IS NATIONAL IMPAIRED
DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH
Two of the most celebrated dates in December –
Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve – are also among
the most dangerous. In 2018, drunk driving crashes
claimed 108 lives in those two days alone, accounting
for nearly half of total traffic deaths.
That is why Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD)
is teaming up with law enforcement agencies across
the country throughout the month of December, which
has been recognized as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month for the 39th consecutive year.
During December 2018, 839 people died in alcohol-related crashes, according to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While drunk driving deaths typically represent around a third of all traffic fatalities, that increased to nearly 50 percent on Dec. 24
and Dec. 31.
On Dec. 25, 2018, 35 people died in drunk driving crashes.
This is staggering.
The pain caused by one person’s choice to drive impaired is often permanent. Every
single death left a permanent empty seat at the table and turned a time of celebration
into tragedy.
And every single death was 100 percent preventable.
We’re asking everyone to take personal responsibility this holiday season by making
a plan for a safe ride home before your celebrations begin. Designate a non-drinking,
unimpaired driver. Take a taxi, a bus, or a train. Use a rideshare app like Uber. If you’re a
host, provide an alternative to your guests, such as festive, non-alcoholic drinks offered
by our partner Mocktail Beverages.
You can also show your commitment to drive sober by displaying one of our Tie One
On for Safety red ribbons or magnetic decals on your vehicle, which are available at our
local MADD offices around the country.
Drunk driving crashes increase throughout the month of December as more people
travel and attend events where alcohol is served. That is why every U.S. President since
Ronald Reagan has proclaimed December National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.
President Donald Trump continued in that tradition this month, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to prevent tragedies by making the decision to drive sober.
The proclamation also remembers victims of impaired driving, offers prayers for grieving families impacted by these tragedies and honors law enforcement who are on the
front lines of the violent, preventable crime of impaired driving. AMY

TEXAS HOLD 'EM
A Texas sex offender, who was apparently living in Grant,
was sentenced to three years for failing to register in Oklahoma.
Christopher Edward Downey, 39, of Grant, was sentenced to 37 months in prison, with five years of supervised
release, for Failure to Register as Sex Offender.
On April 15, 2024, Downey pleaded guilty to one count of
Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.
The charges arose from an investigation by the United
States Marshal Service.
In 2011, Downey was convicted in the State of Texas on
four counts of Sexual Assault of a Child and was required
to register as a sex offender. Downey was advised that he was required to register as a sex offender every ninety days for life, and to inform law enforcement within seven days of any change
in residency. An investigation by U.S. Marshals revealed that between June 2022 and October
3, 2023, Downey failed to register as a sex offender in Oklahoma, despite moving from Texas to
Oklahoma and living at various residences in and around Indian country in the Eastern District
of Oklahoma.
Downey will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending transportation to a designated
United States Bureau of Prisons facility to serve his sentence of incarceration.
