10 | FEBRUARY 2024 Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty COAL COUNTY
STARTING THE NEW
YEAR OFF ON THE
WRONG FOOT
A 26-year-old Oklahoma City man rang in
the new year by getting arrested for two felony
charges the morning of January 1.
According to reports, a Coal County deputy
stopped a vehicle for driving 80 mph in a 50 mph
zone just east of the Tupelo flashing traffic light. He made contact with the driver,
identified as Brian Lindell Hawkins. Although Hawkins had an ID card, he didn’t
have a valid driver’s license on his person. He also didn’t have proof of insurance.
While speaking to the man, the deputy noticed the odor of marijuana coming
from inside the vehicle. He asked Hawkins if he had a medical marijuana card.
Hawkins said no. He told the deputy that he didn’t need a medical card to get
weed in Oklahoma City. The deputy informed him that he was wrong. He let him
know that he needed a medical marijuana card to legally buy marijuana anywhere in the state of Oklahoma.
The deputy also noticed that Hawkins appeared to be under the influence of
something. A Choctaw Lighthorse police officer arrived on scene to administer
a field sobriety test to Hawkins.
Before the test, Hawkins admitted that he had smoked a blunt about two
hours before he was stopped. He failed the sobriety tests, and officers placed
him under arrest.
While searching the man’s car, they found a bag containing four bottles of
vodka, a bottle of tequila, some cigarettes, and seven bags of tobacco. Two of
the bags were unsealed.
The officer patted down the unsealed bags and felt something inside one of
the bags. He looked inside and found a bag containing 188 grams of a white
crystal-like substance that tested positive for meth. He also found a bag containing a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana, and two vials of a
brownish liquid that was identified as MDMA.
Hawkins is being charged with two counts of trafficking in illegal drugs. He
was scheduled to appear in court on January 18, 2024. Bond information was
unavailable at the time of publication.
AROUND THE NATION
Colorado burglar busted after using Uber as getaway car for $8K plumbing tool heist
A Colorado crook carrying thousands of dollars
of stolen merchandise walked right into the police’s hands after he was caught trying to use an Uber as a getaway car, cops
said.
The bungling burglar was ransacking a plumbing store in the Denver suburbs
last week when he called the rideshare driver to pick him up.
The store owner had called 911 after noticing a hole cut in the business’ fencing and caught surveillance footage of the thief inside.
When the local Wheat Ridge police arrived on the scene, they discovered the
Uber driver waiting nearby.
He told cops his passenger “Jose” was headed right toward the car.“Are you
looking for an Uber?” an officer can be heard asking the suspect in bodycam
footage shared by the department.
The man — wearing the hood of his black sweatshirt up and a pulled-down
balaclava — shoots his gaze sideways and hides his hands inside his pockets.“Uh — no,” he stammers. He then gives the officers the fake name “Raul” as
he takes several steps backward and away from the cops.
He was immediately grabbed by officers, but assures them he is not trying to
make a break for it.Jose doubles down on his innocence and claims he is simply
on his way to his mother’s house.
When told he matches the description of the thief, he maintains he is not the
man they are looking for, despite not carrying identification to prove he is “Raul.”
The contents of his backpack, however, exposed the thin charade.“This backpack is full of Milwaukee tools,” one officer can be heard saying while rifling
through the loot.
Inside, cops found more than $8,600 worth of electric tools.
He was taken into custody, where fingerprint scanners confirmed his real identity.“It may not be the best idea to have an Uber pick you up AT the crime scene,”
Wheat Ridge Police said on social media.
A 26-year-old man by the name of Jose was booked the following day on a
plethora of charges, including theft of more than $2,000, criminal trespassing
and false reporting to authorities, court records show.

A HARD PILL TO
SWALLOW
A Durant woman is facing 10 years to life, if
convicted, after she was caught with some little
blue pills in her possession.
Christa Blevins (aka Tatum), 49, was charged
January 4 with aggravated trafficking in illegal
drugs and obstructing an officer, in Bryan County District Court.
According to court documents, Blevins was caught with a multitude of little
blue pills that tested positive for fentanyl, in excess of 20.1 grams worth.
To make matters worse, she lied to the officer and gave him a false name,
but the officer found out otherwise.
The trafficking conviction is punishable by 10 years to life in prion, and the
obstruction charge is punishable by imprisonment of up to one years and/or
up to a $500 fine.
Bond for Blevins was set at $100,000 and her next court appearance is
scheduled for February 21.

WHAT WOULD
YOU DO?
A Hugo man took matters in his own hands
after another man hit his wife and knocked her
out.
Tyler Andrew Klaus, 21, was charged with two
counts of manslaughter first degree, in Choctaw
County District Court.
According to Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), on the night
of January 2, the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office requested the OSBI to assist with a homicide near Hugo.
Choctaw County deputies arrived on scene and discovered 47-year-old
Bobby Joe Johnson deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
Based on the evidence gathered from the scene, it was determined that
Johnson had physically assaulted Klaus’ wife, which resulted in Klaus shooting Johnson.
Klaus was arrested and booked into the Choctaw County Jail. Bond was
set at $250,000 and his preliminary hearing conference was set for January
30.
