FAMILY
TRADITION
An illegal moonshine operation in McCurtain
County led to the arrest of an Eagletown couple
after an investigation by the Oklahoma Alcoholic
Beverage Law Enforcement (ABLE) Commission.
According to reports, 39-year-old Stephen Paul
Minchew, 39 and his 45-year-old girlfriend, Becky
Laverne Eeds, allegedly operated an illegal whiskey still out of their home. They made moonshine
and traded it for things such as guns, cash, and
drugs.
Minchew’s 13-year-old and 16-year-old children allegedly helped make the liquor. Reports
state the children did not attend school, and they
weren’t homeschooled.
Eeds worked at Sonic. She would collect payments, buy supplies, and help deliver the moonshine.
ABLE agents bought moonshine from Minchew
on several occasions from December 2022 to
March 23, 2023.
In December 2022, an agent met the man behind Broken Bow Walmart. The
agent bought four quarts of moonshine for $180.
In January 2023, the agent tried to purchase more liquor from Eeds at Sonic,
but she forgot. The agent then contacted Minchew directly, who told the agent
where he lived. In March 2023, Minchew invited the agent to pick up some
moonshine at his home.
During the investigation, the agent learned that Minchew had a stolen gun that
he probably traded for moonshine.
Eeds is being charged with out of state retailer shipping alcoholic beverages
into state. Her bond was set at $1,500.
Minchew is being charged with operation of whiskey still or distillery without a
distiller’s license and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
His bond was set at $10,000.
They are both scheduled to appear in court on May 5, 2023.

AROUND THE STATE
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
Enid man Walter Lee Hill Jr., 40, was put behind bars after he allegedly fired a gun at officers during an hours-long
standoff on March 16.
According to reports, Enid officers were dispatched to
the 1200 block of East Elm at approximately 3:52 p.m. to
investigate reports of a man firing a gun into the air. When
they arrived, they couldn’t find the man who was firing the shots.
A second call at 4:27 p.m. advised officers that there were shots fired in the area of 12th Street
and Cypress. They went to the location and met with a witness who said the shots were fired at
a nearby residence.
Officers went to the residence. A woman told them that Hill shot at her inside the residence.
Officers surrounded the residence and made announcements to Hill.
Hill then fired shots at the officers from inside the residence. Officers returned fire.
The SWAT team was called to the scene. Garfield County deputies, North Enid police officers,
and Waukomis officers also responded to the scene.
Officers spoke to Hill on the phone, but they couldn’t convince the man to surrender. After
nearly six hours, they deployed gas canisters inside the residence.
Payne County deputies arrived at the scene in armored vehicles to assist. Hill surrendered
shortly thereafter, around 9:42 p.m.
Hill is being charged with six counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a
firearm after a former felony conviction. His bond was set at $1M and he is scheduled to appear
in court on April 17, 2023.

VAPING FOR THE
LORD
A former bus driver from Caney was recently
arrested for allegedly giving marijuana vapes to
teenagers.
The reason?
Reports state that the suspect, 56-year-old
Darryl Tyrone Cuffie, told investigators that he gave the teens marijuana pens
to become friends with them. He said he was a minister at a church - he
hoped that by making friends with the students, they would visit his congregation.
Cuffie was asked to resign from his bus driving position after students reported his drugs for Jesus scheme.
Cuffie is being charged with causing/aiding/abetting minor in a drug crime
and distribution of a controlled dangerous substance including possession.
He was scheduled to appear in court on April 12, 2023.

In Harrison, Arkansas, emergency personnel were called to a pawn shop
regarding a man stuck in the store’s chimney. He tried to tell the police he

In nearby Marion County, Arkansas, a woman had served her time in the

found that it was meth. The woman came in, she was asked if the container
