SUSPECT IN COLD CASE ARRESTED
Special Agents with the Oklahoma State
Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from
the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, arrested John
Wesley Smith for the 1993 murder of John
Randall O’Steen.
The investigation into O’Steen’s murder
began on May 20, 1993, when an anonymous caller informed the McCurtain County
Sheriff’s Office where his remains could be
located. The Sheriff’s Office then requested
assistance from the OSBI with locating the
remains and investigating the murder.
After several days of searching, the skeletonized remains of an unidentified white male
were found in a wooded area south and east
of the Pankibok Community of McCurtain County. The Medical Examiner’s
Officer determined the manner of death was homicide.
Based on information gathered during the investigation, Smith was identified as a potential suspect in the February 1993 disappearance and murder
of O’Steen.
In 2012, a rib from the unidentified remains was sent to the University of
North Texas Department of Forensic and Investigative Genetics for possible
DNA identification. At that time, DNA was collected from O’Steen’s parents
for comparison. UNT compared the DNA to that of the rib bone and it was a
match to O’Steen.
An arrest warrant was issued for Smith on September 30 and he was taken
into custody that same day. Smith is in the McCurtain County jail facing one
count of Murder in the First Degree. He is being held without bond.

4 | NOVEMBER 2022 MCCURTAIN COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
A Florida man was arrested after allegedly storming
the field and attacking a 9-year-old boy during football
practice.
Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies arrested David
Alan Taylor, 41, last month in Pensacola.
Deputies said that Taylor’s son was taking part in
one-on-one tackling practice with another player, when
Taylor’s son was overpowered and started crying.
That’s when witnesses said Taylor ran out on the field,
put a helmet on his head, got into a football stance and
then charged the victim, intentionally hitting the boy in
the chest with the helmet.
Deputies said Taylor then grabbed the victim by the arms and pushed
him to the ground.
Witnesses said the boy was crying, but was not seriously hurt and did
not require medical attention.
Deputies said Taylor then yelled, cursed and approached the coaching
staff in an aggressive manner before he was finally stopped.
Taylor was arrested and booked into the Escambia County jail. He was
charged with aggravated child abuse and disorderly conduct, and has
since bonded out of jail.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

An El Paso, Texas, man busted into a church and absconded with the safe. Safes
are heavy, so he only got a few yards before dropping it on a neighbor’s lawn, where
he tried to crack it open. That’s when he was confronted by the home’s occupant—a
police offi cer.
Is there no honor among thieves? While two suspects were being questioned by
Ogden, Utah, police about shoplifting from a store, someone broke into their car and
stole a stereo and several other items.
How convenient! Only a few months earlier, a man from Iowa City, Iowa had his driver’s license stolen. Then who should show up at the bar where he worked as a bouncer,
but the thief brandishing the bouncer’s very own license as his form of ID.
Anthony Kenneth Mastrogiovanni was impersonating a police offi cer when he pulled
over another car for speeding. The driver quickly sussed out that Mastrogiovanni was
fi bbing since he, too, was a cop, but in his case, the kind of cop who doesn’t have to
pretend he’s a cop because he really is a cop. Mastrogiovanni was arrested for impersonating a police offi cer.
A San Francisco thief pedaled his bike up to a woman on the sidewalk, snatched
the iPhone out of her hands, and rode away. Unknown to him, the woman was in the
middle of demonstrating the iPhone’s new GPS tracking device, which worked—the
thief was captured minutes later.
Following a dispute, Craig Aylesworth, of Bithlo, Florida, allegedly tossed a Molotov
Cocktail at his neighbor’s trailer home … just as the winds shifted, sending embers on
to his own trailer. Luckily, he was arrested, since he no longer had a home of his own
to return to.
Callie Rough of Middletown, Ohio, was picked up for shoplifting from a Dollar General
store with her two young children in tow. Among the booty was a book, 101 Ways to
Be a Great Mom.
Don’t you hate it when you suff er a heart attack and think you’re going to die, so you
confess to a 17-year-old murder, only to fi nd out you’re not going to die and then get
sentenced to life in prison as a result? Yeah, so does James Washington, of Nashville,
because it happened to him.
Clive Halford thinks big! The British career criminal stole a truck and loaded it with
18 pallets of stolen nickel and copper worth around £150,000 (about $250,000). Yes,
the haul was huge—too huge. Cops arrested Halford after the truck’s suspension collapsed under the weight. Earlier, Halford had stolen a car, overloaded it, and broken its
suspension too.

20-year-old Colbert man Mason Aaron Blevins

the man. The man reportedly returned fire.
It’s unclear if anyone was injured in the shootout.
Blevins is being charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon and use of vehicle in
discharge of a weapon. His bond was set at a
$100,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court

More than 100,000 children and
youth in the U.S. foster care system
are awaiting permanent families.
National Adoption Month is a time
to raise awareness about the adoption of children and youth from foster care.
The Children’s Bureau in partnership with AdoptUSKids and Child
Welfare Information Gateway sponsors the initiative each November as a way to focus public attention on the
urgent need for adoptive families for children and youth waiting in foster
care for a permanent family. This year’s focus, “Partnering for Permanency,” builds on the social media theme from last year. A special web page
on Information Gateway’s website helps child welfare professionals, prospective adoptive parents, and youth partner for permanency. The website
contains resources, stories, and videos on topics such as getting started
with social media, how to build a recruitment campaign, and how social
media impacts child welfare and adoption. The website can be found at
http://www.childwelfare.gov/adoption/nam/.

Gotta go to Braum’s...
On October 7, around 9:00 p.m., officers were
called out to an armed robbery at the Valero gas
station near 69th and S. Sheridan in Tulsa.
The caller said he was cleaning the store and
preparing to close when a man, later identified
as Devion Nelson, walked in the store, pulled out
a gun, grabbed the victim, and then demanded
money.
The caller said he fought with Nelson and tried
to stop him from going behind the counter, but
Nelson pushed him out of the way. The victim said
Nelson took cash out the drawer then hit him in
the face when he could not get to the safe before leaving.
Officers quickly converged on the area and began searching for the suspect. Officers located Nelson at a Braum’s down the street and he was
taken into custody.
When Officers questioned Nelson about the robbery, he replied something to the effect of, “I did that dumb sh*t”.
Devion Nelson was arrested for Armed Robbery.
