POLK
On Friday, Sept. 2, at approximately 1am, Oklahoma State
Game Warden Dru Polk was patrolling for illegal spot-lighters
north of Bethel. Warden Polk heard a call come over the radio
advising a vehicle had ran off a bridge and was submerged.
The report stated that people were trapped inside.
Warden Polk realized he was just a few miles away and knew
he was the closest responder in the area. The Warden drove to
the location where he observed several vehicles with flashers
on. As Warden Polk exited the vehicle he noticed a van submerged in the creek with a small portion of the cab still visible.
Warden Polk located the driver, which had swam to shore in order to get help. The
driver advised there were still two people inside.
Bystanders advised the officer that there was a handicapped man and an elderly
woman trapped in the van. It was reported that neither could swim. Warden Polk
went back to his vehicle and stripped off his gun belt, boots, and grabbed an emergency throw bag.
Warden Polk was soon joined in the water rescue by McCurtain County Deputy
Sheriff Floyd Branson. Both officers jumped into the water and swam to the submerged van. They located the handicapped man near the passenger door. They
talked to both occupants and discovered neither were seriously injured. However,
they were very distraught and unable to swim.
Deputy Branson secured Warden Polk's rope around the man and Warden Polk
assisted the victim through the deep water. They were joined by firefighters from
Bethel, Battiest, Hochatown, and Pickens fire departments. Firefighters Brad Hardaway of the Battiest Fire Department and Curtis Allen of the Hochatown Fire Department entered the water to assist in the rescue. The other firefighters and community
members assisted by pulling the victims from the water moving them to safety.
Once the man was safely on shore, Warden Polk swam the rope back to Deputy
Branson and the rope was tied to the elderly woman. She was also safely brought
to shore by the rescuers. The officers determined that no other victims were in the
van.
Both victims were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The officers observed, after the rescue, that the guard rail of the bridge had penetrated the van into the cab. It traveled through the full length of the van and exited
out the back window. The passengers of the van had been extremely lucky in only
receiving minor injuries.

Atoka man Robert Lee Stephens, 32, was arrested on August 25 after he allegedly stole two bikes
from young girls because he said the cops were
chasing him.
According to the police report, an Atoka officer
was dispatched to a residence on Cedar Circle at approximately 10:56 a.m. As he approached the home,
he saw a woman walk out of the residence. She appeared to be panicking. She told him that Stephens
had stolen two bicycles and then run out of the back
door of the duplex when police arrived.
The woman’s husband also told the officer the bike
thief had gone out of the back door.
Another officer spotted the alleged thief walking
out of the front door of the home. When the officer told him to stop, Stephens
took off running. He only ran for about 75-100 yards before sitting down and
putting his hands in the air.
As the officer was walking toward the man, Stephens kept saying, “I was just
bringing the bicycles back.”
Dispatch advised that the man had a warrant out of Atoka County. When
the officer told him about the warrant, Stephens replied, “That’s not good.” He
added, “My attorney called me four days before court and told me, but I didn’t
have time.”
Officers then went back to speak with the couple and their neighbor. The
man said when he went outside to walk the dog, he noticed that his daughter’s
bike was missing. His wife told their neighbor, who advised that her daughter’s
bicycle was also missing. The couple later saw another man riding their daughter’s bike. When they asked him where he got it from, he told them he borrowed
it from Stephens.
The couple was later outside when Stephens rode up on the stolen bike. The
wife said he admitted to stealing both of the bicycles, because the cops were
chasing him.
Stephens is being charged with two counts of grand larceny. His bond was
set at $50,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on September 14, 2016.

A Moyers man allegedly attacked another man at an Antlers bar for seemingly
no reason, causing the victim to hit his
head on the ground, putting the man into
a coma.
34-year-old Justin Ross McKenzie was
later arrested for the drunken assault.
According to the police report, two men
contacted the Pushmataha County Sheriff’s Office and told a deputy about the August 20 attack. The men said they were
all drinking together at a bar on Highway
3 in Antlers when the alleged assault occurred. The two witnesses said they were
on the patio with the victim when McKenzie just walked up to the man out of nowhere and hit him on the side of the head.
Both of the men told the deputy there
was no cause for the assault. The victim and suspect hadn’t been arguing
or fighting or anything. They said McKenzie hit the victim without any kind of
warning or provocation.
The punch caused the victim to fall down and hit his head on the concrete
ground of the patio.
The victim was transported to the hospital, but family members told police
that the victim was later taken to a hospital in Tulsa by ambulance for his
injuries. They said he was currently in an induced coma and was breathing
with the aid of a ventilator.
The suspect was later arrested.
McKenzie is being charged with aggravated assault and battery. His bond
was set at $5,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on September
28, 2016.

Durant woman Lakrisha Louise May
King, 23, was arrested in Coal County
on September 2 after she allegedly broke
into an abandoned home, fought with an
officer and tried to escape from jail.
According to the police report, a Coal
County deputy was dispatched to an
abandoned house in the 100 block of N.
Byrd Street in Coalgate at approximately
6 p.m. When he arrived, he walked into
the residence and found King lying on a
bed in one of the back bedrooms. He
placed her under arrest and transported
her to jail.
During booking, King was very uncooperative and refused to answer any of
the jailer’s questions. Right before she was going to get dressed out and
placed into a cell, she ran out of the back door in an attempt to get away.
Her dreams of freedom would soon be squashed, however. The deputy
chased after her, but King didn’t stop.
At one point, she tripped and fell to the ground, putting her hands under
her body. The deputy struggled with the woman to get her hands out from
underneath her so he could put her back in handcuffs. He was eventually
successful, and he led her back inside the jail.
King is being charged with attempting to escape from prison other than
a penitentiary, breaking and entering dwelling without permission, trespassing after being forbidden and resisting an officer. Her bond was set at
$13,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on September 15, 2016.

Durant man Jason Ray Waller, 36, allegedly attacked his neighbor with a hammer while moving into a new place on August 30.
According to the police report, a Durant
officer was dispatched to the 1500 block
of W. Cedar shortly after 7 p.m. to investigate an assault. The victim said a man,
later identified as Waller, who had just
moved into the building that day, walked
downstairs while talking on his cellphone.
Waller told the person on the other line
that he or she owed him money.
The victim told Waller none of the tenants in the building were drug users, and
they didn’t want any drug activity near
their home.
Waller seemed upset, but he walked
away. He returned a short time later with his hands behind his back. The
victim grabbed a piece of pipe and prepared to defend himself. Waller told
the man he had a gun. The victim dropped the pipe. Waller then revealed the
hammer and threw it at the victim. He continued to try to fight the victim until
the police arrived.
The victim had blood on his chest and the left side of his face; the officer
noticed a cut on the man’s left ear.
Another tenant living in the building said he loaned Waller his hammer earlier
that day. He told the officer he later saw Waller throw the hammer at the victim. The hammer was located lying on the ground near the front porch.
The officer made contact with Waller. Dispatch advised the man had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The officer placed him in handcuffs and took
him to jail. He asked the man about the alleged assault.
Waller said the victim started acting aggressive toward him and tried to hit
him with a stick, so he defended himself. He told the officer the victim hit him
with a piece of pipe before the threw the hammer.
When the officer asked him where he had been hit, Waller pointed to his
right bicep. The officer told him he didn’t see any injuries on his arm.
The man then changed his story and said the victim tried to hit him, but he
missed.
Waller is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
His bond was set at $40,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on October 12, 2016.

When police in Vancouver, Canada, asked to search Jason Pauchay’s apartment for drugs, he was not a suspect—in fact, they were looking for someone
else. That all changed when they got a look at how his name was listed on his
cell phone: “Jason Pauchay Drug Dealer.”
When Stephan Crane broke into the Ravelli Republic (Montana) newsroom,
he used the computers to watch porn and check Facebook. Then Crane
doused the office with a fire extinguisher, took some candy, and left. It wasn’t
difficult to find him, however; the police just followed the trail of stolen M&Ms
that led to his sister’s place across the way.
As two men waited on line at the coffee shop to pay their bill, a third cut in
front of them. He threw a drink at the clerk, and demanded all the money from
the till. Temporarily surprised, the men quickly recovered and handcuffed the
crook. Apparently in his rush the criminal didn’t notice they were police officers—in full uniform.
In Mesa, Arizona, a home break-in was foiled when the burglar jumped
through the bedroom window—and got trapped in a clothes hamper. Cops
took it from there. (That definitely wasn’t the kind of clean getaway he had
planned.)
Recently, a woman in Fresno, California, was stopped at a DUI checkpoint
for being soused. Ever helpful, she offered up this info: “My husband’s right
behind me, and he’s even drunker than I am.”
A German bank robber sent mocking emails to local police, ridiculing their
efforts to arrest him. First he let them know they had his age, build, and accent
wrong. Then he corrected their announcement that he’d escaped on foot; no,
he had a getaway car! The cops got the last word in, though, when they arrested the guy a few hours later. They used his email to trace him.
A woman in Somerset, Massachusetts, was arrested for breaking and entering. But she was quickly caught thanks to her ankle bracelet … the one fitted
with a GPS system … that she had gotten from the police … for being on
probation from an earlier breaking-and-entering case.

According to the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation, 264,541 Oklahomans have a
state gun carry license as of August 1, 2016. Do you believe gun ownership deters or
exacerbates the problem of gun violence? What is your solution to gun violence?
Stephanie S: Guns themselves do not create violence. It is the careless individuals, who for one probably obtain them illegally and secondly, use them as a tool to
commit their crimes. I for one am a registered gun owner and as such, have Peace
of mind in knowing I won’t be a statistic and I won’t go down without being able to at
least attempting to defend myself.
Brett S: For every action, there is a reaction of equal and opposite force. It’s up to
the population to make sure the opposite force is applied in time to save their own lives
or the lives of another. RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF ANY
SAFE, MODERN, AMERICAN POPULATION!
Dawn H: Criminals do not obey the laws. These gun restrictions are for law abiding
citizens. That means, criminals get to keep their gun but law abiding people do not.
That means it exacerbates the problem!
Virginia I: People are the problem. Not guns. Too many games, and tv. You shoot
and get up. Get real
Debbie S: As one of 264,541 CC people, I feel secure in knowing that my fellow
carriers are deterring crime.
Daniel P: As one of the 264,541 as well, I do believe it does deter but even if it
doesn’t at least I’m prepared.
Jerod J: Show me one instance that proves legal gun owners are a liability to society. An armed society is a polite society. With guns in the hands of good people, crime
doesn’t stand a chance
Winnie B: I think it deters it. Instant Justice!
Karyn C: Deters.
Michael L: Mental evaluations, and a sh** load of them.

26-year-old Oscar Noe Calel Culan was arrested on
September 1 after he allegedly ran over a man while
drunkenly driving a stolen ATV.
According to the affidavit, a Choctaw County deputy was dispatched to the 1900 block of U.S. Hwy 271
shortly after 8 p.m. to investigate the incident. When he
arrived, the owner of the bar told him Culan was at the
bar, had too many drinks and started harassing female
patrons. The bar owner asked Culan to leave, but he
wasn’t ready to go. He yelled, “I’ll kill you all!” at the bar
owner and other patrons who were standing in front of the bar.
Culan then jumped on an ATV and hit the gas, headed straight for the
group outside. Everyone was able to get out of the way, except a man who
had recently broken his leg and was on crutches.
The deputy found the ATV next to a tree in front of a nearby store.
A man arrived on scene and told the deputy his parents owned the land
behind the bar, and the ATV belonged to his family. The man said Culan
lived in a house on the property, and officers were free to search it.
Officers were advised another ATV should be in the barn -- well, it wasn’t,
but there were fresh tire tracks in the grass.
While searching the property, the deputy found the man’s passport -- all
of the pages were blank and there was no visa stamp.
When they eventually located Culan, he said he didn’t do anything wrong,
and he denied taking the ATV from the barn. He did, however, admit to
drinking and driving the ATV parked by the tree.
The deputy placed him under arrest and put him in the patrol car.
As the deputy was handing out statement forms, the man unbuckled his
seatbelt and jumped out of the car. He took off running, but he tripped and
fell to the ground a short time later.
During booking, he admitted to illegally crossing into the U.S. from Mexico and said he didn’t have a visa.
Culan is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, leaving scene of accident involving injury, unauthorized use of vehicle,
escape from arrest or detention and public intoxication. His bond was set at
$50,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on September 27, 2016.
