cushing man facing molestation charges
Cushing man Colten Allen Ryba, 28, is
facing charges of lewd molestation after he
allegedly touched his fiancé’s daughter inappropriately.
According to the police report, a Cushing
officer was sent to a home on January 14
to investigate the claims of sexual assault.
The victim’s mother, who was visibly upset,
said her daughter told her that she had been
“touched” by Ryba. The girl told her mom
Ryba approached her several times when he
thought she was sleeping and touched her
inappropriately.
The officer took a pair of Ryba’s pajama
pants from the scene to be used as evidence.
A child welfare specialist later interviewed the victim about the accusations.
The victim said Ryba had touched her several times, starting in 2017. She
described the same kind of assaults to the specialist that she had told her
mother. She also told the specialist she pretended to be asleep during the
assaults, because she was scared of what was happening.
The victim said she told her mom about the assaults because she was
scared Ryba would start doing the same thing to her baby sister.
The officer later spoke to Ryba, who initially denied that any inappropriate
contact had taken place between himself and the victim. Later in the interview, he admitted to touching the girl inappropriately while she slept.
Ryba is being charged with two counts of lewd molestation. His bond was
set at $75,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on February 4, 2019.

Hines strikes again less than a month
out of prison
A Mannford man is wanted by police for
allegedly raping a child a month after being
released from prison.
According to reports, 42-year-old Brian
Scott Hines was released from prison in December 2018 after being convicted of molesting a 6-year-old in 2007.
He is currently on probation for that crime.
On January 10, reports say the man sexually abused a female relative and made her
take a shower after he was done. He threatened to kill her if she called for help.
The victim said she was in her room playing a game and doing her homework when Hines told her she wasn’t giving him enough attention. He took
her phone and electronic devices away from her, and showed her a knife he
was holding. He told her, “What you do tonight, what you say and how well
you listen depends on if you live and [another relative] lives.”
According to reports, he also told her if she didn’t do what he wanted, he’d
kill the relative and burn the house down.
During the abuse, the girl said she begged him to stop, but didn’t fight back
because she was scared of what he might do to her and the relative.
Hines is being charged with child sexual abuse, assault and battery with a
deadly weapon and plan/conspire/endeavor to perform act of violence. His
bond was set at $250,000. A warrant was issue for his arrest on January 11,
2019.

Being able to tell the difference between healthy, unhealthy and abusive
relationships can be more difficult than you would think. No two relationships
are the same, so what’s unhealthy in one relationship may be abusive in another. Although there are many signs to pay attention to in a relationship, look

AROUND THE NATION
A 21-year-old woman who was sought by
authorities in Las Vegas after allegedly skipping out on a $35 manicure and using a stolen car to run over and kill a manicurist has
been arrested in Arizona.
Krystal Whipple was taken into custody by
a team of Phoenix-area fugitive hunters involving local police, county investigators and
FBI agents, Las Vegas police said. The arrest
occurred in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale.
Las Vegas police Officer Jacinto Rivera
said he did not immediately have details of
the arrest. He said prosecutors will seek her
extradition from Arizona to Las Vegas where
Whipple was sought in a warrant issued Jan.
4 on murder and robbery charges in the killing of Ngoc Q. Nguyen, 51, of Garden Grove,
California.
The case sparked intense national interest after police released an internet
plea for help identifying Whipple that showed parking lot security video of a
woman leaving the nail salon Dec. 29. Homicide Lt. Ray Spencer said Whipple tried to pay for her manicure with a fraudulent credit card before telling
Nguyen that she was going to her car to get cash, then drove away.
Nguyen went to the front of the car and a man who Spencer identified as
Nguyen’s husband was seen in the security footage holding onto the vehicle
from behind as the car accelerates out of a parking lot.
Police say the car was a rental that had been stolen. It was later found
abandoned at an apartment complex.
Whipple has a criminal record in Las Vegas including a conviction in 2017
for attempted possession of a stolen vehicle. Clark County District Court records said she was sentenced to four months in jail for violating probation in
that case.
An attorney who represented Whipple at that time said he doesn’t represent her now.

19-year-old Jared Anthony Joslin was taken back to jail
less than 5 days after being released for committing the
same crimes he was locked up for initially.
According to reports, Joslin was arrested back in September 2018 following a search of his home by law enforcement
officers. The search yielded several stolen sheriff’s radios
and a sheriff’s jacket. He was also charged with infiltrating a
confidential program used by first responders.
He bonded out of jail on January 18, but he would be back
just a few days later.
On the evening of January 21, Joslin allegedly called 911
using a fake name. He told dispatch that his former girlfriend
had stolen some of his stuff. A quick investigation revealed the caller was actually
Joslin.
While reviewing the call, investigators heard police officers speaking on police
radios in the background. Officers went to his home and found a handheld radio,
a police scanner, a cell phone and a list of multiple frequency numbers belonging
to fire and police agencies.
He was arrested on January 22.
Joslin is being charged with operating a mobile radio while in commission of a
crime and false reporting of a crime. His bond was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on February 28, 2019.

As a female shopper exited a convenience store, a man grabbed her
purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately and the woman was
able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher, and police apprehended him within minutes. They put him in the cruiser and drove
back to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to
stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied, “Yes Officer, that’s her.
That’s the lady I stole the purse from.”
In Bent Forks, Ill., kidnapers of ice-cube magnate Worth Bohnke sent a
photograph of their captive to Bohnke’s family. Bohnke was seen holding
up a newspaper. It was not that day’s edition and, in fact, bore a prominent headline relating to Nixon’s trip to China. This was pointed out to
the kidnapers in a subsequent phone call. They responded by sending a
new photograph showing an up-to-date newspaper. Bohnke, however,
did not appear in the picture. When this, too, was refused, the kidnapers became peevish and insisted that a photograph be sent to them
showing all the people over at Bohnke’s house holding different issues of
Success Magazine. They provided a mailing address and were immediately apprehended. They later admitted to FBI agents they did not understand the principle involved in the photograph/newspaper concept. “We
thought it was just some kind of tradition,” said one.
After being arrested for stealing a car, the judge asked the man, “how
do you plead?” Instead of saying guilty or not guilty the man said: “Before
we go any further, judge, let me explain why I stole the car.” The judge
ruled in record time.
When two service station attendants refused to hand over the cash
to an intoxicated robber, the man threatened to call the police. They still
refused, so the robber called the police and was arrested.
Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just
couldn’t control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each
man in the lineup to repeat the words, “Give me all your money or I’ll
shoot,” the man shouted, “That’s not what I said!”
In a small town of 1700, a student attempted to rob the local convenience store wearing his letterman’s jacket. He did not realize that he was
the only male named Dana in the whole town.
A company called “Guns For Hire” stages gunfights for Western movies, etc. One day, they received a call from a 47-year-old woman, who
wanted to have her husband killed. She got 4-1/2 years in jail.
Accused of selling drugs, Howard Jones’s attorney sought to lower
his client’s bail from $150,000 insisting that Jones would not think about
fleeing. At that very instant, Jones sprinted out of the front door of the
courtroom. He was caught fifty minutes later and his bail was raised to
$500,000.

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty 19 | FEBRUARY 2019 LOGAN COUNTY
across county lines
A Guthrie man is facing felony charges in Canadian County after he allegedly had phone sex with
an investigator who he thought was an 14-yearold girl.
According to the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday, January 22, Canadian County
Sheriff’s investigators arrested Michael Bertrand,
37, of Guthrie, on the charges of Soliciting Sexual Conduct or Communication with a Minor by
Use of Technology. The investigation began on
November 19, 2018, when Bertrand began talking to an undercover Sheriff’s investigator using a
popular social media app.
Bertrand was told by the undercover investigator that he was talking to a 14-year-old female,
but he continued with the conversation anyway. Bertrand asked the decoy if
she liked older guys and if she was interested in having sex with him. Bertrand
provided his phone number to the undercover deputy where he texted various sexual requests, such as performing oral sex on the 14-year-old.
Bertrand eventually called the under-aged girl (a female deputy) and engaged in graphic phone sex with her. During the phone sex, Bertrand asked
the undercover deputy if she would perform oral sex on him, and how he
told her how he would make sure she experienced sexual gratification too.
Bertrand also asked the under-aged girl how big her breasts were, as well
as questions about her other private female body parts, and about her sex
history.
Bertrand was arrested at his residence in Guthrie with the assistance of
Logan County Sheriff’s Office. Bertrand admitted he was talking sexual to
the decoy and even tried to delete text messages when investigators were
speaking to his mother, who he lived with. Bertrand was transported to Canadian County Detention Facility.
“The fact that there seems to be a never ending deluge of child predators
only serves to strengthen my commitment to this program,” said Chris West,
Canadian County Sheriff.
