Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty PAYNE COUNTY 7 | NOVEMBER 2017
EAST SIDE STORY
A Stillwater man’s attempt to escape the
law came to an abrupt end when Stillwater
police officers thwarted his plans.
Jacob Barton, 24, was charged with
attempting to elude, running a roadblock,
driving under suspension, possession of
a controlled drug, and possession of drug
paraphernalia, in Payne County District
Court.
According to court documents, a Stillwater police officer attempted to pull Barton over on October 19, but Barton had
other plans. A chase ensued on the east
part of town from Jardot and McElroy until
Glencoe and Fairgrounds Roads. During
the chase, Barton narrowly missed several
vehicles, including a school bus.
At Glencoe and Fairgrounds Roads, he blew through a roadblock set up by
a Payne County deputy.
Barton was eventually apprehended by officers. During a search, officers
found meth and a syringe with residue inside. He was taken to the Payne
County jail and booked. Bond was set at $20,000.

PUBLIC INTOXICATION
9 | NOVEMBER 2017
Scott T: I think the s.o.b should have his head cut off too, with a dull knife. Our
society coddled the criminals, that’s why there are so many of them.
Jenni C: There are so many criminals because Oklahoma legislators don’t try
to prevent it by adequately funding the schools.
Scott T: I can agree that the schools need more funding but I don’t think that it
would have any effect on the crime rate.
Megan B: Penalty is not what motivates people. They do t anyway and this guy
would have done it anyway.
Scott T: I don’t mean that all crime would stop if our society were tougher on
criminals, but I do believe it would help to some degree. Plus it would make me,
(and a lot of other people) feel better.
Max S: They should speed the process don’t see nothin wrong with getting it
over with put him down been to long already he cut someone’s head off just take
em middle of downtown Tulsa n hang him get it done with
Nicholas P: Someone should bust into his cell when he isn’t expecting it and
cut his head off. Then justice would be served #eyeforaneye
Tommy N Cyndy M: The sad thing is he will live in prison at our cost for 10 to
20 yrs before he is put to his death. The people he killed didn’t get to live another
10 to 20 yrs. Prayers for the victims family.
Geoff W: If you don’t trust the government with the ability to spend tax money
wisely, but you trust it to successfully identify murder culprits with a 100% success
rate, you should reevaluate one or both of those opinions.
Darrell K: yeah this guy was caught literally red handed. there is no doubt
about who lopped off his fellow workers head.
JosephChiane R-D: If I’m not mistaken he admitted to doing it also so there’s
no doubt
Scott T: He admitted to it but tried to use religion, and even mental health as
an excuse.
Donnie B: Didn’t take them long to get rid of Timothy McVeigh so maybe they’ll
put this piece of crap on the express lane to hell
Heather G: The bombing happened in April 1995, he died June 2001, he was
fed and sheltered and had health care some do not until he was finally put to death
Russ J: Justice hasn’t been served yet. Not until they get that needle in his arm.
Marilyn R: Death penalty, what a joke, maybe in 30 years
Rechelle F: He should get put to death sooner than later poor victims I worked
there during this time horrible tragedy
Jason A: A bullet is cheaper and less time waiting for it to happen.
James H: I think it was served. And I believe the jury came back with the correct verdicts.
Brad F: He asked for the death penalty 2 yrs ago the state denied it
Deborah P: HELL YA, ONE INCH AT A TIME, CUT HIS HEAD OFF....THANK
YOU
Fred S: Justice hasn’t been served yet. He’s not dead.
Coll T: It would be served if they put the needle in his arm tomorrow.
David M: Yes...cut his head off...
Cody Y: One less P O S we are paying for.
Scott T: Oh we will be feeding him and providing health care for a while. Several
years likely.
Sue M: Don’t worry, we are going to be paying for his room and board for several years. It’ll take at least 6-8 for him to use up all of his appeals.
Tammy L: Yes. Eye for an eye.
Trevor L: Bring in a guillotine
Scott T: No too painless. Get someone who has little arm strength and give
them a dull machete, so they have to hack at it a couple times.
Trevor L: Haha I was trying to use something that’s barbaric but at the same
time doesn’t put us in the same league as him
Scott T: I see your point, but I’ve always felt that the punishment should fit the
crime. And this crap about lethal injection being bad because it burns a little bit......
nope... don’t care.
Wendy S: Barbaric, eh? Give him the rack...
Scott T: If more of these people were put to death, for murder, there would be
fewer murders, I’d bet.
Deneisa C: The sooner the better
Scott C: Bring back public hanging
Tom H: Pay per view it!!!!
Stan R: Yea he gotta go
Marie W: I think he deserves to die
Dee M: Hang him on the court house lawn
Tony P: the quicker the better
Kelly M: Yes
Michael V: Duh yeah
Dustin H: Yes
Shirley C: yes
JURORS RECOMMEND OKLAHOMA MAN
CONVICTED OF BEHEADING COWORKER
BE SENTENCED TO DEATH
Jurors have suggested that a man convicted of beheading his coworker be put to death for the crime.
Alton Nolen, 33, was convicted of first-degree murder in
late September for beheading his former coworker, Colleen
Hufford, in September 2014 inside Vaughan Foods. He has
already been handed three life sentences plus 130 years
combined on assault charges for stabbing Traci Johnson
and attacking other workers inside the plant.
After nearly three hours of deliberation, the jury reached a verdict and ruled that
Nolen should be sentenced to death.
The decision by the jury is just a recommendation. A judge will formally sentence
Nolen at a later date.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

UNSOLVED CASES:
CARINA SAUNDERS
OSBI reinstated a reward on
October 13, which was the six
year anniversary since remains
of Carina Saunders, 19, were
discovered behind a Bethany grocery store. The Bethany Police Department worked
the case for more than a year
before requesting OSBI investigative assistance. For several years now, OSBI has interviewed dozens of people who
claimed to have information,
served search warrants on locations believed to be involved
in the murder, and dug at several sites searching for evidence. As of yet, that
work has not produced enough evidence to make an arrest. Saunders’ case
is highlighted in the OSBI Cold Case Playing Cards distributed to Department
of Corrections facilities, hoping someone behind bars can provide useful information. OSBI is offering up to a $10,000 reward to the person(s) who provides information that helps substantially progress the case. By state law, that
reward is active for 90 days. Please call 1-800-522-8017 with information or
email a tip to [email protected].

NO DAY AT THE BEACH
A murder suspect on the lamb was found
in Florida expecting to live the good life, but
the Creek County sheriff’s department thwarted his plans.
Robert Firethunder, 18, was charged October 5 with murder in the first degree- deliberate intent, in Creek County District Court.
According to a press release from the Daytona Beach Police Department, the department received a call on October 4 from the
Creek County Sheriff’s Office regarding a homicide investigation. Sheriff’s officials stated
they believed the suspects were in Daytona
Beach and would be meeting with a woman
who lived in the 500 block of Segrave in Daytona Beach, Florida, to obtain some money.
Sheriff’s investigators said they also believed the suspects would be in a Chevy pickup with an unknown tag.
Daytona Beach’s Crime Suppression Team, Robbery Homicide Unit, and
Special Investigations Unit began surveilling the residence. Someone driving
a pickup with an Oklahoma tag showed up at the residence. A check of the
license tag revealed the vehicle belonged to the suspect’s aunt.
Investigators observed a woman emerge from the residence, get in the
truck and drive away. CST investigators attempted to stop the female in the
truck, but she sped away. After a short pursuit, investigators were able to stop
and arrest Ruby Alexis. She is facing local fleeing and eluding charges. Alexis
is also reported as missing out of Oklahoma.
Daytona Beach’s SWAT Unit then responded to address again after suspect Robert Firethunder showed up in another vehicle. He was taken into
custody and later extradited back to Oklahoma.
Firethunder is currently being held in the Creek County Justice Center without bond.

A man wanting to stay sober volunteered to serve part of his friend’s one-month
drunk-driving sentence. The 51-year-old Swede wanted to see if he could pose as
his friend and fool the justice system, but he was discovered two weeks into the
sentence. The man said, “I wanted to go to jail to stop myself from drinking for a few
weeks. My pal didn’t think it would work. He agreed to let me try. I borrowed his ID
card and identified myself as him at the prison.” He has since been charged with perjury and wrongful use of another person’s identity.
A Golden Gate Estates man couldn’t fool anybody when he tried to get his vehicle
registration renewed with a fake license, Collier sheriff’s deputies said. Marcial Montes-Lopez, 29, of the 1100 block of 21st Street Southwest, used a driver’s license
described in an arrest report as “obviously fake because of the cartoonish photo and
vibrant colors,” deputies wrote in an arrest report. He faces a single charge of possessing a counterfeit driver’s license. Montes-Lopez was trying to renew his registration at a Collier County Tax Collector’s office in Golden Gate when employees spotted
the fake ID, deputies said. The license number on the ID was issued to Montes-Lopez
but expired in July 2010, the report said.
A man facing drug trafficking charges made a strong first impression at his court
appearance in Broward County when he showed up wearing a “crack shirt.” The shirt
included instructions for making crack cocaine.
Chilean doctors say a 266 pound man who was shot in the stomach was saved
by his rolls of fat. They say the bullet lodged in the man’s fat and did not damage
any vital organs. A thinner person would have been killed immediately. A hospital
spokesperson in Santiago says the man’s thick layer of fat acted in the same way as
a bulletproof vest, taking the impact of the shot. La Cuarta newspaper reports Omar
Alegria Campos, who’s 33, was driving his bus in the San Bernardo area of Santiago
when an armed man got on and started robbing passengers. Alegria stopped the bus
and switched on his emergency lights to alert the police. He then tried to grab the
man’s weapon. The attacker fired twice. The first bullet smashed the windscreen and
the second lodged in the bus driver’s stomach. Despite the wound, Alegria managed
to throw himself on top of the robber, stopping him from escaping. A passing police
patrol arrested the 29-year-old attacker. They also took Alegria to El Pino Hospital,
where doctors extracted the bullet and sewed up the wound.
Two northern Arizona parents were arrested after photos of their young children
allegedly being abused were posted on Facebook. An anonymous Facebook user
reportedly alerted authorities on Wednesday after seeing two children, an infant and a
toddler, bound with duct tape around their wrists and ankles in photos posted to the
social networking site. In the photos, the 2-year-old and 10-month-old are allegedly
bound with duct tape around their wrists and ankles. Their mouths were also closed
shut with duct tape. Police said one of the children was hung upside down on an
exercise apparatus. Jayla Hamm, who was 17 at the time of the abuse, received 10
days in jail and two years probation. Her boyfriend, Corde Honea, 19, an ex-convict,
was sentenced to three to five years for child abuse and received an additional 12 to
24 months on felony possession of stolen firearms.

Q: Can I explore treatment centers even if my friend is not willing to go into
treatment? What should I look for in a treatment center?
A: Yes. If you find centers that might appeal to your friend, either by their location or medical approach, it might encourage him or her to enter treatment.
You can call this helpline and get some advice on how to proceed: 1-800-
662-HELP (4357) (This service is supported by the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services.) You can also look for a treatment center online, which
will allow you to search for a treatment center in your area and also give you
information about the kind of addiction or patients it treats.
Treatment approaches must be tailored to address each patient’s drug
abuse patterns and also other medical, psychiatric, and social problems.
Some treatment centers offer outpatient treatment programs, which allow
patients to continue to perform some daily responsibilities. However, many
people do better in inpatient (residential) treatment. An addiction specialist
can advise your friend or loved one about the most promising options.
NIDA’s Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment compiles 30 years of research into a set of general principles and frequently asked questions about
effective treatment. Using these principles, NIDA has developed a booklet
that outlines 5 questions you can ask when looking for a quality treatment
program. You might want to have these materials on hand when you talk to
treatment centers to help you ask the right questions.

THOSE SHOES
Chandler man Matthew James McCarty, 29,
allegedly assaulted three officers after he was
arrested for public intox and attempted larceny
on October 6.
According to the affidavit, a Chandler officer
was dispatched to Walmart in the 3100 block
of E. First at approximately 12:56 p.m. due to
a shoplifter. An employee told him a man, later
identified as McCarty, had entered the store,
put on a shirt from a rack and took off his shoes
before putting on a new pair of shoes. He then
made his way to sporting goods, grabbed a
machete and attempted to get it out of the
package.
The employee informed the officer McCarty appeared to be under the
influence of something.
When McCarty realized he was being followed, he took off the shirt and
boots, put his old shoes on and dropped the machete. He paid for a drink
at the self-checkout before leaving the building.
The officer made contact with the man outside the store and placed him
in handcuffs for safety. McCarty told the officer his aunt was in the store,
and she was going to pay for the items he had been messing with.
The officer then asked the man what was wrong with him. McCarty admitted to smoking meth and marijuana. He explained that smoking meth
makes him want to steal things.
The officer placed the man under arrest and transported him to jail.
When they arrived, McCarty seemed to be even more under the influence
of drugs. He became very animated in his movements and started yelling.
When jailers attempted to transport him to the drunk tank, he pulled
away and hit an officer in the back of the head. He also scratched and
pinched another officer.
Several other officers came for backup. During the struggle, McCarty
grabbed and squeezed another officer’s testicles. A few taser shots later,
and officers were finally able to put the man in handcuffs.
McCarty is being charged with three counts of battery/assault and battery on police officer after former conviction of two or more felonies. His
bond was set at $3,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on November 6, 2017.

UP ON THE HOUSETOP, TASE-TASE-TASE
Guthrie man William Joseph Graham, 36, allegedly broke into a home and tried to force entry
into another before he was arrested on October 13.
According to the police report, Guthrie officers
were dispatched to the 600 block of East Harrison
shortly after 2 p.m. Dispatch advised a shirtless man
was behind the residence, wielding a knife and a
gun.
By the time officers reached the location, the
half-naked suspect was nowhere to be found.
The residents of the home said they were asleep
when they were woken up by the man, later identified as Graham, kicking down the front door. He
entered the residence with a knife, but one of the victims grabbed a hammer
and chased the burglar out of the house.
Neighbors across the street said they saw Graham kick down the victims’
door and walk into the home with a “hunting knife.” They told officers Graham
had taken off running westbound from the residence.
While searching the area for the alleged burglar, dispatch advised that the
man was trying to break into a second residence in the 200 block of East
Vilas. When they arrived, they found Graham sitting on the roof of the house.
They told him to come down, but he refused, stating that he didn’t do anything wrong, and there wasn’t a warrant for his arrest.
Officers continued to order the man off the structure. He told them, “Just
shoot me.”
Two officers climbed into the roof. Graham continued to refuse commands,
so one on the officers tased the man. Police were able to get the man off the
roof and into handcuffs.
Graham was then transported to jail, where he was booked for burglary
in the first degree, assault and battery upon a police officer, and resisting a
law enforcement officer. His bond was set $25,000, and he is scheduled to
appear in court on November 14, 2017.
