not without a fight
Claremore man Rodney Earl Sanders, 52,
allegedly threatened his neighbor’s life with a
knife during an altercation on January 16.
He also resisted arrest when officers approached him about the situation.
Reports state Claremore officers were
dispatched to a residence on Brooks Street
to investigate reports of a disturbance early
that morning. When they arrived, they heard
Sanders screaming at his next-door neighbors, who were safely inside their apartment.
Officers approached Sanders to see what
was going on. They searched the man found
a fixed blade knife on his person.
Officers spoke with one of the man’s neighbors who Sanders had been screaming at. The neighbor said Sanders had
pointed a knife at him and threatened to slit his throat.
When officers tried to place Sanders under arrest for the threat on his
neighbor’s life, the man refused to exit his home. He didn’t just refuse to leave,
however – he wasn’t going down without a fight.
According to reports, Sanders assumed a fighting stance when officers
approached him. Police pushed the man to the ground and noticed he was
holding a knife. Officers ordered the man to put his hand behind his back and
to drop the knife several times, but Sanders refused every command.
They were eventually able to subdue the man and take him to jail.
Sanders is being charged with threaten to perform act of violence and resisting an officer. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 12, 2018.

ag hunter comments on judge balkman’s
trial schedule for state opiod lawsuit
Oklahoma is first state in
nation to have a trial scheduled in opioid litigation
Attorney General Mike Hunter
today commended Cleveland
County District Judge Thad
Balkman for granting the state’s
requested May 2019 trial date for
its lawsuit against opioid manufacturers for their role in creating
the opioid epidemic.
Oklahoma is the first state in the nation to have a trial date set
among the multitude of states across the country suing drug manufacturers.
Attorney General Hunter said the 2019 trial date will allow the
state sufficient time to gather evidence and prove its case.
“We appreciate the urgency Judge Balkman saw in getting the
case to trial,” Attorney General Hunter said. “Rather than dragging
it out longer, which is what the companies had requested, Oklahomans who have suffered immeasurably from the years of fraudulent
marketing campaigns will see this case resolved sooner rather than
later.
“The state’s case is solid and our team is prepared to hold these
companies accountable for their role in the deadliest drug epidemic
the state and nation have ever seen.”
Attorney General Hunter filed the lawsuit against the nation’s leading opioid manufacturers in June 2017, claiming the effects of deceptive marketing campaigns over the last decade have fueled the
state’s opioid epidemic.
Manufacturers responded to the lawsuit with motions to dismiss,
which Judge Balkman ruled against last December, allowing discovery in the case to begin.
In the last three years, nearly 3,000 Oklahomans have died from
overdose deaths and more than 1,300 newborns have tested positive for substance exposure. In 2016 Oklahoma ranked first in the
number of milligrams of opioids distributed per adult, and in the 14
counties surrounding Tulsa, there were enough opioids for every
man, woman and child to have 90 pills.

How can people find a treatment
center they can afford?
If they have health insurance, it may
cover substance abuse treatment services. Many insurance plans cover inpatient
stays. When setting up appointments
with treatment centers, you can ask about
payment options and what insurance
plans they take. They can also advise you
on potential low-cost options.
To find treatment—and to learn about payment options—try the Behavioral
Health Treatment Services Locator provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration. This free tool offers payment information for each
of the treatment services listed, including information on sliding fee scales and
payment assistance. Its “Frequently Asked Questions” section addresses cost of
treatment.
You can also call the treatment helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (1-800-662-4357)
or 1-800-487-4889 (TTY) to ask about treatment centers that offer low- or nocost treatment. You can also contact your state substance abuse agency—many
states will help pay for substance abuse treatment.
Note that the new Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act ensures that
co-pays, deductibles, and visit limits are generally not more restrictive for mental
health and substance abuse disorder benefits than they are for medical and surgical benefits. The Affordable Care Act builds on this law and requires coverage
of mental health and substance use disorder services as one of ten essential
health benefits categories. Under the essential health benefits rule, individual and
small group health plans are required to comply with these parity regulations. For
more information on the Affordable Care Act you can call 1-800-318-2596 or go
to https://www.healthcare.gov/ .
When you research payment options, be sure you are speaking to people familiar with the new rules (old websites and pamphlets will not necessarily be accurate).
A note on health insurance for veterans: If the person needing treatment is a
veteran or is covered by health benefits for veterans, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) can help you find VA services near you. Visit the VA Substance
Use Disorder Program Locator to do your search.

RAPE - SECOND DEGREE
12 | FEBRUARY 2018 MAYES COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
Poor Chastity Eugina Hopson was so worried about her possibly-tainted meth that
she actually contacted the police about it. Officers at the Granite Shoals Police Department in Texas were trying to catch the county’s dumbest drug users when they posted
a fake Facebook story about Ebola-tainted meth. The post said, “If you have recently
purchased meth or heroin in Central Texas, please take it to the local police or sheriff
department so it can be screened with a special device. DO NOT use it until it has been
properly checked for possible Ebola contamination!””
Hopson, 29, saw the post and was understandably afraid that her meth could be...
wait for it... dangerous. She responded to the department’s post on Facebook, and
they gladly took her sample in for “testing.” Hobson was charged with possession of
less than one gram of a controlled substance.
18 year old Ruben Zarate wanted to rob a muffler shop in Chicago and demanded
money. Unfortunately it was mostly in the safe. Zarate decided that he would try again
later. To save himself some time, he left his cell phone number with the store employees. That way, they could call him when the manager returned.
Demetrius Robinson, 28, wanted to rob a Golden Pantry store late one night, but he
needed to pass the time as naturally as possible until he and the clerk were alone, so
he decided to fill out a job application. Not a bad idea, except he left his real name on
the application, along with his uncle’s phone number. After he robbed the store, it didn’t
take long for police to track him down. He didn’t get the job.
Before breaking into an apartment, Joey Miller and Matthew McNelly decided to put
on disguises. And by disguises we mean they covered their faces in permanent marker.
The thing about permanent marker is that... well it’s permanent.
After the burglary, the pair was pulled over by police and immediately recognized
because of their hair. Just kidding, it was their faces covered in permanent marker that
set them apart from the crowd.
A Kentucky woman was arrested after authorities caught her trying to shoplift merchandise while her son took part in a “Shop with a Cop” event. She was charged with
theft of less than $500 and not understanding irony.
Eoise Reaves stretched the limits of “to serve and protect” when she approached
a policeman and asked him to help her get her money back for the poor-quality crack
cocaine she’d just purchased. She showed him the crack, which she had tucked away
in her mouth, and he placed her under arrest. How does one know when crack has
gone bad?
Things were looking up for Frank Singleton when he was released from jail. However,
when he realized that he didn’t have a ride home, he walked straight into the prison
parking lot and attempted to carjack a woman. He was foiled when he realized that
he couldn’t drive a car with a stick shift. As he was re-arrested - this time, for felony
carjacking - Singleton told police that he simply “didn’t feel like walking.” We’ve all been
there.
A West Palm Beach, FL man was arrested on a slew of charges, and was perhaps
a bit too honest on his arrest report. He listed his occupation as “drug dealer” and was
charged with being the most obvious criminal in the history of crime.
A police impersonator in Dumfries, VA tried to pull over an off-duty officer, when the
real cop informed the fake cop that he was a real cop (this is getting confusing) the fake
cop ran away but was quickly apprehended and hauled off to a very real prison.
Charles Ray Fuller, a Texas dumb dumb, tried to cash a bogus check for $360 BILLION. To top it off, the check wasn’t even made out to him. He was arrested on forgery
charges and sentenced to a million billion years in prison.
Two men arrested in Houston were accused of stealing an iPad and using it to take
selfies that they unknowingly uploaded to the owner’s iCloud account. The men appeared in the photos displaying money they were also accused of taking from the
victim. At least they didn’t have to listen to that new U2 album!
The dumbest policeman in the world, who was making some extra cash with drugs
and prostitution, was brought to justice after driving a $170,000 Ferrari to work. Osman
Iqbal, an officer based in Birmingham England, was jailed for seven years for running
a brothel.

a winter night’S drive
A Nowata woman and her Bartlesville
boyfriend were locked up after she allegedly wrecked their vehicle after a night of
drinking on January 14.
According to the affidavit, a Nowata
County deputy was dispatched to County
Road 26 and County Road 414 shortly
after 1:20 a.m. to investigate a reckless
driver. When he arrived, he saw skid marks
and areas where it appeared a vehicle had
driven off the road. He soon found a car
matching the suspect description parked
in the middle of the road. Near the vehicle,
the deputy found Jesse James Kerr Sr., 29.
Kerr said his girlfriend was in the car, but the car was no longer
fit to drive. The deputy looked at the vehicle and noticed significant
damage to the front and sides of the car. The rear bumper was
gone, there was grass in the radiator, and the passenger rear tire
was flat and off the rim.
The deputy found the man’s girlfriend, identified as 25-year-old
Desiree Ann Crawford, passed out in the driver’s seat. He told her
to step out of the vehicle.
Crawford told the deputy she and Kerr had been drinking at a
friend’s house. Kerr became upset and left the house on foot, so
she jumped in the car to track him down. After Kerr got in her vehicle, the woman said she just drove around the area, because she
didn’t know how to get back home.
While speaking with the woman, the deputy noticed that she appeared to be intoxicated. He placed both Kerr and Crawford under
arrest for public intoxication.
When they arrived at the jail, Crawford started screaming and
cussing at an officer. The officer told Crawford to calm down, but
Crawford instead started yelling and swinging her arms around.
When the officer tried to make Crawford sit down in the chair, the
woman kicked the officer in the stomach.
Kerr is being charged with public intoxication. His bond was set
at $1,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on February 5,
2018.
Crawford is being charged with assault and battery on police officer, escaping from department of corrections and public intoxication. She failed to appear in court on January 29, and a warrant was
issued for her arrest in the amount of $2,000.

hold my beer
Grove man Brady Aaron Wilkison, 19,
admitted to breaking into a store and stealing three 12-packs of beer after a fight with
his girlfriend on January 5.
According to the affidavit, a Delaware
County deputy was dispatched to Dollar
General on Highway 10 around 1:30 a.m.
due to alarms going off. When he arrived,
he noticed the front door window was broken. The deputy found a rock lying inside
the store near the broken door. No suspects were located inside the store.
A woman pulled into the parking lot and
told police that her boyfriend, identified as Wilkison, had been missing since midnight. She described his clothes and said he was “angry and drunk” when he left.
The deputy reviewed security footage from the store and watched
as a man threw a rock into the front door. He then entered the store
and took three cases of beer. The man put the beer into a shopping
cart and tried to leave through the automatic doors. When they
didn’t open, he kicked the doors and grabbed the beer.
The suspect walked behind the counter and messed with the tobacco case, but he didn’t take anything else. He walked back out
the front door and headed southbound down Highway 10.
While still at the scene, one of the suspect’s friends called the
deputy. He advised that the man was at home and in bed.
On January 9, another deputy went to Wilkison’s residence to
speak to him about the incident.
When the deputy asked him where he had been the night of the
burglary, Wilkison said he want to his dad’s house after fighting with
his girlfriend. He denied having anything to do with stealing the beer.
The deputy explained that Wilkison matched the suspect captured on the store’s surveillance camera. He asked the man if he
wanted to tell the truth. Wilkison said yes and told the deputy he
was “mad and very intoxicated” when he left the residence. He
wanted more beer, so he walked to Dollar General and used a rock
to break into the store to steal more booze.
Wilkison is being charged with burglary in the second degree. He
was released on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond.

Live life with passion
By Christian Ryan
Life is a never-ending battle. We win
some – we lose some. What defines
“winning”, or as we call it, “success”,
may change from person to person.
I define success by living with passion. In my life, passion has helped me
drive past conflicted times that should
have held me back and hindered my
success. Coming from a broken home
with no father and eventually no mother
(for a period of time), I could have fallen
to drugs or crime, but I had a burning
passion to make something positive of
my life.
My first actions towards my passion started with fitness. I started
lifting weights the summer before going into the 7th grade. Then,
Coach [Jay] Moore convinced me to give football a chance. That
was the start of my career as an athlete.
Since then I’ve been successful in football and powerlifting. I ran
track but more for team support. It’s not exactly one of my strongest
talents.
In powerlifting I achieved junior state placer and state champion
for 8th and 9th grade. Now, I’m a varsity state placer and state
champion. I’m going into the second semester of my senior year
and I’m planning to become two-time state champion, if it’s in
God’s plan for me.
I live my life passionately. I choose not to be normal. It is a choice
that requires strong self-discipline. I want to change the world for
the better. I don’t want just breathe, work, and die. I want to see the
world and change people’s lives.
This keeps me motivated to get through the hard times because
I know that seasons change and there is a light at the end of every
tunnel. I believe passion is essential for a happy human life.
Without God I would be nothing. Ever since I gave my life to Him
and surrendered, He has used my passion for His will. I want to start
a youth ministry and help teens that are in my shoes - going through
High School confused and afraid and show them there is so much
more to life than what appears to be in front of them.
Passion can be positive or negative. Without the right direction
passion can take you down the wrong path. Healthy passion is
something that helps us grow and can help shape us into great
leaders. Hitler was a passionate man, but he was passionate for the
wrong reasons and murdered almost the entire Jewish population.
Obviously, this is an example of misdirected passion.
Be careful that your passions are productive and positive. As you
pursue your dreams make sure what you are doing will change others lives and maybe even the world for the better.
About the author:
Christian Ryan is a senior at Cushing High School. He moved to Cushing from North Carolina when he was seven years old. Shortly thereafter,
his mother was diagnosed with cancer and became involved in drugs and
later spent time in jail. He then went to live with relatives. To escape his
problems, Christian threw himself into weight-lifting and other sports, but
lifting was his passion. He contributes his success to Coach Jay Moore
and several family members and friends. Christian placed third in the state
power-lifting competition when he was in 8th grade. In 9th grade, he won
junior state champion. In 10th grade varsity, he placed third in the state;
the first and second place winners were seniors. In 2016, his junior year,
he won the state power-lifting championship. During that time, he dabbled
in drugs to drown out his problems, but quickly realized that was not the
way he wanted to live his life. In 2017, he turned his life over to God after
contemplating suicide. From that moment on, he wanted to make a difference. After high school, Christian plans to possibly attend ORU in the fall
semester. He wants to become a youth pastor to help kids like himself that
have gone through troubled times.

Hammertime!
A woman in Arkansas was taken into custody
after police say she attacked a man with a hammer.
Little Rock television station KATV reports that
55-year-old Rebecca Ann Larch was being held at
the Pulaski County Jail Sunday (Dec. 17) on accusations of aggravated assault and second-degree
domestic battery. Jail records do not indicate if
she is represented by an attorney.
Police say Larch was arrested Friday (Dec. 15)
afternoon after she allegedly chased a man outside her residence and struck him twice with a hammer. Investigators say
the circumstances of the attack remain unclear, but Larch was reportedly
intoxicated when she was arrested.
Larch has a listed address in Mabelvale but police say she and the man
she attacked were roommates. The man’s name and the extent of his injuries were not immediately available.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

Grove woman Rebecca Dawn Wood,
29, was put behind bars after she allegedly
assaulted an officer during a traffic stop on
January 20.
According to the police report, a Quapaw officer was stationed in the 200 block
of Main Street when a vehicle with Kansas
tags drove by at approximately 3:33 p.m.
Noticing that the tag had expired, the officer stopped the vehicle on Highway 69
just north of Quapaw. She spoke to the
driver and asked for his information. She
also asked the passenger, identified as
Wood, for her identification.
Wood handed over her license, but advised she didn’t have insurance on the vehicle.
While checking the subjects’ info, the officer was advised that
Wood had two warrants through Ottawa County. Wood said she
didn’t know anything about the warrants – she told the officer she
thought everything had been taken care of.
The officer told her that she was going to tow the car, and Wood
needed to arrange for someone come get the driver and their children.
Wood asked if they could just take the vehicle home.
The officer told her no, so the woman walked back to the vehicle
and told the driver, “Call Woody and tell him to come down here.
She is trying to tow the car and she can’t do that.
When the officer asked who “Woody” was, Wood said the man
was a former Quapaw officer.
Wood then told the officer that she was being “rude.”
Another officer arrived to assist. Wood started arguing and raising
her voice, so the officer told her she was under arrest. Wood jerked
away and refused to put her arms behind her back.
The officers took the woman to the ground, who continued to
scream and yell. One of the officers stunned the woman with a
taser.
They were then able to place her in handcuffs.
Another officer arrived on scene and took the woman to jail.
Wood is being charged with assault and battery on a police officer. Her bond was set at $7,500, and she is scheduled to appear
in court on February 27, 2018.

FEBRUARY IS Teen Dati ng Violence
Awareness Month
Learn About Teen Dating Violence
Every year, approximately 1.5 million high
school students nationwide experience physical
abuse from a dating partner. It is also known that
3 in 4 parents have never talked to their children
about domestic violence. In light of these alarming facts, every year during the month of February advocates join efforts to
raise awareness about dating violence, highlight promising practices, and encourage communities to get involved.
There are many resources available to provide information and support to
victims and assist service providers and communities to decrease the prevalence of dating violence among young people. Anyone can make this happen
by raising awareness about the issue, saying something about abuse when
you see it and organizing your community to make a difference. Take Action!
Teen dating violence (TDV) is defined as a pattern of abuse or threat of
abuse against teenaged dating partners, occuring in different forms, including verbal, emotional, physical, sexual and digital. TDV occurs across diverse
groups and cultures.
Although the dynamics of TDV are similar to adult domestic violence, the
forms and experience of TDV, as well as the challenges in seeking and providing services, make the problem of TDV unique.
The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence and VAWnet have
developed an Online Special Collection: Preventing and Responding to Teen
Dating Violence. Recently updated, this Special Collection emphasizes collaborative and multilevel approaches to the prevention of and response to teen
dating violence. This year’s updates include additional resources for teachers
and school-based professionals and a new section to support the efforts of
pregnancy prevention advocates and adolescent sexual health practitioners
in addressing adolescent relationship abuse.

Amateur criminal and professional dumb dumb Christopher Kron made every mistake possible in robbery history when he tried to rob a restaurant after it closed one
night. Not only did he trip the silent alarm, but when ADT called the restaurant after
being notified, Kron answered the phone and gave them his REAL NAME. He returned
to the restaurant the next day and was recognized by an employee who had seen the
surveillance video. Kron was arrested on the spot.
A man in Stockholm, Sweden was a bit upset when the 13-year-old girl he’d been
courting didn’t show up for an arranged sex meeting. When the teen stood him up, the
man found her home phone number and called her father to demand a refund. Obviously things didn’t end well.
Polish author Krystian Bala, might’ve gotten away with murder… if he hadn’t written
about it in his book. His 2003 novel Amok became a bestseller in Poland, but he paid
the price when police noticed that the details of a murder in the book eerily matched
those of an unsolved case.
The similarities led the police to investigate further, discovering connections between
Bala and the victim, including the fact that the victim was romantically involved with
Bala’s ex-wife. Whether or not he was inspired by the OJ Simpson “novel” based on a
similar subject is unknown. What is known that he received 25 years in prison.
Let it be known that you can now be arrested for ballin’ on a budget. William Anderson, 51, was arrested after attracting attention by applying for welfare while driving an
H2 Hummer. Thinking it an odd sight, the local sheriff ran the plates, and the vehicle
came up as stolen.
