A Duncan man could sing all
the way to prison after police
caught him trying to burglarize a
friend’s house Oct. 25.
Around 7:20 p.m. that
day, officer Suzannahe Weir
responded to a burglary call, and
dispatch said the suspect was a
white male with a beard. The
male ran south from the home
to a cross street, dispatch said.
At the scene, Weir spoke to
a woman who said she was
watching TV while her parents
were at the Duncan football
game. She said she heard
someone trying to get in the house, so she walked into the
living room to see the man, Joshua Melton, 27, rummaging
through drawers and grabbing a karaoke machine. She froze
when she saw Melton, who looked at her, balled up his fist and
ran out the door. She knew Melton after hanging out with him
a few times last year, she said.
During Weir’s conversation, the woman’s mother called,
and she said, “Mom, he just broke into the house.” Once Weir
learned Melton’s identity, she realized he was a suspect in
another recent break-in nearby. Officers went to find Melton
at his residence, detained him and brought him back to the
scene, where the woman positively identified him, according
to the affidavit.
Melton faces a charge of first-degree burglary. He was
convicted last year of falsely declaring an item in a pawn shop,
and he received a seven-year suspended prison sentence. If
convicted in this case, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
Melton has court set for 9 a.m. Jan. 8. He remains in custody.

Eighteen-year-old Brittany
Phillips was a student who
was taking courses at Tulsa
Community College and was
days away from her 19th
birthday. She was described as a
bubbly, happy person who had
no known enemies, the type of
girl who always kept in contact
with family and friends and was
always responsible, taking her
school work seriously. So it was
surprising when she suddenly stopped showing up to TCC
and couldn’t be reached by phone.
On October 1, 2004, after a couple days of missed classes,
a concerned friend decided to stop over Brittany’s apartment
at Union Apartments, where she was living alone. She walked
into a horrifying scene, Brittany’s decomposing body. She
had been laying there for several days.
The last time anyone had contact with Brittany was on the
evening of September 27, 2004. Sometime during the latenight hours of 09/27/04 and the early-morning hours of
09/28/04, an unidentifi ed man was in her apartment. It is
unknown if he was invited in or broke in. She was assaulted,
raped and then strangled to death and he left her bruised and
battered body lying on her bed in her second fl oor apartment.
Since her murder, authorities have interviewed MANY
people and have compared thousands of DNA with no luck.

FALSE INFO TO POLICE OFFICER
A Marlow man could possibly have avoided jail time Oct. 27 if he
didn’t give away his illegal secret, police say.
Around 1 a.m. that day, officer Gina Taylor-Phillips was on patrol
when she saw a silver four-door car pass by with a broken tag light.
She initiated a traffic stop, where she saw Hershel Van Vestal, 55,
looking “very nervous and anxious” upon realizing she was a cop.
Vestal said he just wanted to get home, but Taylor-Phillps saw
he had an axe in the back seat of his car. She asked another officer
to watch Vestal while she checked his license. Taylor-Phillips also
noted that Vestal made a lot of “stashing movements,” making her
think he was hiding something.
Taylor-Phillips wrote Vestal a warning for defective equipment,
and at that time she asked if he had any contraband in the car. He showed her a prescription
bottle with hydrocodone pills, which prompted her to conduct a search of the driver’s side of
the car.
The search revealed another prescription bottle with Vestal’s name on it, which had a small
bag of methamphetamine inside. He was arrested for possession of the methamphetamine,
but police determined the hydrocodone pills were a proper prescription, according to the
affidavit.
This case isn’t Vestal’s first run-in with the law. He was convicted of first-degree burglary
in Grady County in 2004 and was sentenced to 15 years under supervision of the Department
of Corrections.
Vestal posted a $7,500 bond Oct. 28. He will appear in court at 9 a.m. Jan. 8.

Guns, money and drugs combined
to land an Oklahoma City teenager in
Stephens County custody on felony
charges Nov. 4.
Around 5:40 p.m. that day,
Duncan police officer Joe Lard went
to a home after receiving a report
of an armed robbery. He got to the
scene and spoke to a man who said
two men approached either side of
his vehicle and asked “what he was
doing in the hood.”
The suspect, Kittrell Kyles, 18,
opened the driver’s side door, pulled
out a pistol and told the man to give him all of his money. He
refused, so Kyles tried to fire the gun. However, the gun jammed,
prompting Kyles to punch the man in the mouth instead, busting
the man’s upper lip. The suspects ran away afterward, he said.
A neighbor then approached Lard and said her niece saw two
men run into one of the other apartment buildings, and both
matched the man’s description. Lard and two other officers then
went inside that residence with consent of the lessee, where
they found Kyles in the bathroom with the lights turned off. His
accomplice, who was not arrested, was in a bedroom.
The man identified Kyles as the main mastermind, but he
couldn’t positively identify the accomplice because the accomplice
was wearing a bandanna at the time. A search of Kyles revealed a
white crack rock in his pocket, Lard said.
The accomplice was released after a police interview, but
Kyles was booked for armed robbery, assault and battery and
possession of a controlled substance. He was charged with
attempted robbery with a firearm.
Kyles has court set for 9 a.m. Jan. 8. He remains in custody on
a $50,000 bond.

December is National Drunk and
Drugged Driving Prevention Month,
a time to raise awareness about the
consequences of driving under the
influence of alcohol and drugs.
Get the Facts
• Every day, almost 30 people in
the United States die in motor vehicle
crashes that involve an alcoholimpaired driver. (Source: CDC)
• In 2010, there were 431 alcoholrelated motor vehicle fatalities in Ohio.
(Source: Ohio DPS)
• Of drivers tested, 1/3 of fatally
injured drivers in Ohio tested
positive for drugs from 2005-2009. (Source: NHTSA)
Drugged Driving Prevention
• All drivers must understand that drugged driving is as dangerous
as drunk driving and that driving under the influence of certain
prescription medications is considered impaired driving.
• As with a drunk driver, never ride in a car with a driver you suspect
is under the influence.
Drunk Driving Prevention
• Designate a sober driver before celebrations begin.
• Never serve those under the age of 21 alcohol.
• Plan safe parties, including providing non-alcoholic drink options to
guests and not serving alcohol the last hour of the gathering.

On Friday, October 18, an Oklahoma Internet Crimes Against
Children Task Force member from the Edmond Police Department
arrested Stephen DeWayne Huckeba, 52, at his residence. The case
was initiated by an Edmond detective into the distribution of child
pornography on the Internet. Huckeba distributed more than a
dozen child pornography videos to the detective.
Task force members from the Edmond Police Department,
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Oklahoma Attorney
General’s Office, with the assistance of the Logan County Sheriff’s
Office, served a search warrant at Huckeba’s residence, 200 East
Rock Circle Drive in southern Logan County.
During the search of the residence, several computer-related items
were located and seized. Huckeba admitted to the Edmond detective that he distributed and
possessed child pornography images and videos.
The computer items will be taken to the Edmond police computer laboratory for forensic
examination. The case is still under investigation to determine if any local children are in any
of the images.
Huckeba was booked into the Logan County Jail and is charged with one count of
distribution of child pornography, one count of possession of child pornography, and
violation of the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children,
taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children
receive public assistance and their parents pay no child support,
all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

What you’re saying
about this on...
Valerie W: R.I.P Prayers go out to the
family.
Shawna A: THOUGHTS FOR THIS
FAMILY .
Jay A: Sad.
Janae Marie H: PRAYERS
Brittany W: Why do we have such
lenient laws for drinking and driving?!?
This man needs LWOP at the minimum!
This poor boy and his poor parents. I
can’t even imagine....
Jerry D: Things like this makes me
wonder why alcohol is legal, but other
way less dangerous things are illegal.
Sabrah B: No im not a weed smoker
but I know ppl. But why is this legal?
How many accidents or deaths caused of
alcohol? A lot! Now how many accidents
or death has weed caused? Answer that
one. This world is getting way outta
hand. My heart hurts for this family I
couldn’t imagine. Prayers for this boy
and his family!
Jerry D: Not only the dangers of
drinking and driving,but health related
damage and mental and physical abuse.
Alcohol hurts thousands a year. Yet its
legal. Weed on the other hand helps
people, no reported deaths or ODs, but
yet its illegal. Makes perfect sense.
Desiree H: Very sad. What was he doing
riding his bike at 11:00pm. That man
should’ve been driving and that little
boy should’ve never have been out that
late riding his bike. He should’ve been
at home in his pj’s. Everyone dropped
the ball on this one.
Jerry D: Most parents now days could
care less what there kids are doing as
long as they don’t bother the parents.
Sad indeed.
Jennifer R: I was wondering the same
thing. I hope that he was coming back
from something at school or church,
not just running the streets at that time.
So sad for the family. I hope they find
justice
LittleWeasel W: But wait according
to folks who love to get drunk. Alcohol
has never hurt anyone.
Virginia I: No blame except for the
person who hit the child, A family has
lost a son,brother,grandchild,friend
May God protect and cover this family
in this awful time
Ruby Raechel H: Billy was riding
his bike home from a church event
called eternal fraternity. It’s something
for kids to do on Friday and Saturday
nights.
Amy S: Who gives a sh** what the
boy was doing out that late. For Christs
sake, is it the parents fault now that
he was allowed to leave the home? For
buying him a bike? What about what his
brother had to witness? How his parents
feel? You’re first thought is “why was he
out that late”? Pathetic. Really pathetic.
Tragedy happens everyday and people
are always looking for someone to
pass the blame to. God bless everyone
involved in this tragedy.
Abe T: A life has been taken and all you
people can worry bout why he was out
late the real ? Why was the man drinking
and driving the kid could have been in
another car and the man driving drunk
could still have killed that kid by hitting
another vehicle this a little kid who
didn’t know he was gonna die riding his
bike home but the man knew drinking
and driving could kill someone and it
did so think about that you heartless
people if it was your kid you wouldn’t be
saying things like we’re was the parents
news flash kids get hit by people driving
drunk during the day too
Dustin K: judgemental a** people, i
swear.... it doesnt matter what the kid
was doing. his life is over and you people
wanna blame his parents?
Stephanie S: Where in this story does
it say he was riding a bike? It’s horrible
to hear ANOTHER person has lost a
life due to stupidity...but where am I
missing the bike part?
Taken too soon
A 12-year-old Wagoner boy was killed Nov. 9 by a driver
suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Chief of
Police Bob Haley said the boy was riding home with his brother
when he was hit by an SUV.
Haley said the two brothers were northbound on North Story
Avenue near N.E. Ninth Street just before 11 p.m. Billy Lord,
12, was struck by a northbound SUV driven by Richard Roth
of Wagoner.
Roth left the scene but later returned, Haley said.
The other brother was not injured.
Haley said Roth, 34, was booked on anticipated charges of manslaughter and
leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. Any other charges will await the
results of a blood test, but police do have reason to suspect alcohol is a factor, he
said.

A Chickasha man was taken into
custody after he went crazy on a
vehicle following a fight with a
family member.
On Nov. 3, a Chickasha police
officer was dispatched to a residence
on report of domestic abuse, the
affidavit states. When he arrived, he
spoke with a woman who said her
brother, Michael Leon Heath, 33,
had hit her son in the back of the
head.
She said when she confronted
him, he became irate and chased her
out of the house.
She said she and her three children got in the car and shut
the door, but Heath followed her outside. He allegedly hit the
front passenger window while yelling and cursing at her. He then
pulled a knife out of his pocket and stabbed the front passenger
window twice.
The victim’s mother was in the driver’s seat and she put the
car in gear. While they were driving away, Heath kicked the rear
fender of the vehicle, leaving a dent, according to the woman.
The officer examined the vehicle and saw two distinct marks
on the window where the victim said Heath had stabbed the car.
The officer located Heath and placed him under arrest. Heath
agreed to speak to the officer. He told the officer that he and his
sister had been arguing and he followed her out to the car. He
admitted to pulling out a knife and throwing it at the window
because he said he was mad. He also admitted to kicking the
fender.
Heath is being charged with malicious injury to property. He
is being held on a $75,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in
court on Dec. 4, 2013.

The time to choose
This note came from a reader who had an unfortunate incident. We don’t question that this
reader is a good person who had something bad happen in their life. The “something bad”
was a result of a choice. There is a right time to make choices.
Nov. 11, 2013
Last Saturday was the worst day of my life. I got a DUI in Broken Arrow. Several factors
contributed – I had not eaten that day, for instance. That doesn’t matter. What matters is
that if you publish my picture and this becomes common knowledge, it will endanger not
just my job, but my career and family relationships.
Please, please, please do not publish my picture and information. This is so important.
You have the power to make my life miserable and cause me great heartache and additional
financial trouble, or to refrain from doing so. I know I made a mistake and I have learned
from this and will never risk anything like this happening again. Never.
Please don’t publish it. Thank you.
Dear Reader,
We don’t know what the factors were that you mentioned but we can imagine that one of
the factors was driving after or while you were drinking alcohol and that absolutely does
matter. The only real problem is you got caught. That changed everything.
We guess there are little or no consequences for making bad choices, rather, a result of
getting CAUGHT. Consequences include embarrassment of getting caught, handcuffed,
booked, mug shot taken and jail time. Consequences include the cost of being bonded out,
hiring a lawyer and court costs.
Among the greatest consequences is having their mug shot plastered all over creation in OK
Jailbirds. This we can promise, if you get arrested your mug shot WILL be in OK Jailbirds.
No amount of money or pleading that can keep you out. We must run them all to remain
credible. We won’t compromise that.
We urge people to think about consequences BEFORE making choices that could trigger
some very negative, costly and embarrassing events in your life.
Is it worth it? The time to ask that question is before making a bad choice. You have the
power to make good choices and make your life wonderful. Don’t risk your joy and happiness
to chance.

Craigslist crazy man
Anthony Brinkman, a 32-year-old Missouri man, was jailed Nov. 1
after he allegedly posted an ad on Craigslist seeking an individual who
would be willing to rape his daughter while he watched.
According to St. Louis Police, an investigation was launched after
Brinkman posted an ad on Craigslist seeking an individual who would
be willing to have sex with his 11-year-old daughter while he watched.
Someone who saw the ad clicked the “report abuse” feature on the
site, and the report was forwarded to the Missouri Internet Crimes
Against Children Task Force.
Investigators say a female undercover officer posing as a 27-year-old
woman responded to Brinkman’s ad and discussed his request.
Brinkman reportedly told the officer that he was looking for someone
who would engage in sex with his daughter using various sex toys. As
the conversation continued, Brinkman told the officer that he wanted
her to be his girlfriend and planned to participate in the assault.
Brinkman agreed to meet the undercover officer at a nearby Cracker Barrel restaurant. If all
went well, Brinkman planned to bring the officer to his home where the assault was to take place.
When Brinkman showed up at the restaurant, officers were surprised to see that he brought
the little girl with him. After Brinkman’s arrest, his daughter was released into the custody of
other relatives.
A search warrant was then served at Brinkman’s apartment in Cuba, Missouri. Investigators
are awaiting the results of a forensic examination of his computer.
He was booked into jail and charged with attempted statutory sodomy. He remains held in lieu
of $100,000 bond.
The case remains an open investigation and additional charges are expected.

A burglar running from Wal-Mart was no match for Chickasha
police, who swiftly apprehended the bandit and put him behind bars.
On Nov. 6, officers were dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a
shoplifter that was being “uncooperative,” according to the affidavit.
On the way to Wal-Mart, dispatch advised police that the shoplifter
had fled the store.
When an officer arrived, he saw a group of Wal-Mart employees
standing near a wooded area. The officer ran up into the woods and
was able to chase the suspect out from the trees. The suspect ran
away from another officer after being ordered to stop.
Police finally caught the man, who was identified as Lance James
Andrew Conner, 42, of Chickasha.
They noticed that his speech was slurred and he smelled like alcohol.
An officer spoke with a Wal-Mart employee, who told the officer that he had seen Conner
and another man with a shopping cart full of merchandise walking around the store.
The employee said that neither of the men attempted to purchase any of the items in the
cart, which included clothes, food, beer, electronics and AirSoft guns. Conner allegedly
pushed the cart past the registers and out the doors, causing the alarms to sound.
The employee said when he confronted Conner and his accomplice, Conner fled. The
employee watched the other man and was able to retrieve the license plate number from the
man’s vehicle.
Conner is being charged for grand larceny. His bond was set at $30,000, and he is scheduled
to appear in court on Nov. 26, 2013.

A Chickasha man is being charged for
drug possession after he was arrested for
“finding” $2,000 in a local gas station
bathroom.
According to the affidavit, Chickasha
police served an arrest warrant on Nov.
6 to
Ronnie Dean Yates, 42, after he
allegedly stole $4,000 from a local gas
station.
Police conducted a search of Yates,
and they found a large amount of cash in
his pocket. He agreed to speak to police,
but hesitated when they asked him where he had obtained the cash.
An officer told him that they had seen everything on video.
Yates insisted he didn’t steal the money and said he found it in
the restroom. He told police that there was no toilet paper in the
bathroom, and he looked under the sink for more TP. Instead of
booty ribbon, Yates said that he found $2,000.
He said that although he knew it was a bad idea, he took the money
from under the sink. Yates said that he had paid some of his court
fines with the money he “found” under the sink.
The amount of money that was missing from the convenience store
was approximately $4,000.
Yates gave the officers the remaining money and said he had spent
some of it at Wal-Mart and Chinese Express, and had given a friend
$20.
An officer asked Yates if he had anything else on him, and Yates
told him to check his watch pocket.
Inside the pocket, the officer found a small clear plastic bag that
contained a white powdery substance that later field-tested positive
for meth.
Yates was booked into jail and is being charged with possession of
a controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine). He is being
held on a $50,000 bond, and he is scheduled to appear in court on
Dec. 4, 2013.

“Be of sober spirit, be on
the alert. Your adversary,
the devil, prowls around
like a roaring lion,
seeking someone to
devour. But resist him” (I
Peter 5:8-9).
Everything was going
well for you. Money in
your pocket. You wanted
to spend it. You knew
how to spend it. Your
choice was a sobering
experience.
The Bible says you have
an enemy who wants to
destroy your life. To trap
you. Your choice was a
bad one. You had a wreck. Picked up for possession. You didn’t
control your anger. The roaring lion caught you. You failed to
“resist him”. Deceived.
The devil catches people by getting them to think, “It’ll be OK!”,
when it isn’t OK. You were devoured! It doesn’t need to happen
again. Seek God and you will find Him (Acts 17:27).

Resist the devil
