A mother was taken into custody
August 22 after a Wal-Mart employee
turned nude photos of a man and small
boy over to Duncan police.
Jennifer Turner, 39, was charged
August 23 with one count of possession
of child pornography and her husband,
Michael Turner, 51, was charged August
31 with one count of child pornography.
According to the affidavit filed in the
case, Jennifer allegedly dropped off
film at the Duncan Wal-mart photo
processing department. When the nude
photos of Michael and the boy were
turned over to police, Deputy Michael
Moore and DHS employees went to the
Turner’s residence on Gatlin Rd. A few
minutes after his arrival, Jennifer pulled
up to her home with three children in the
car. He asked to speak with her and she
sent the children into the house. She was
immediately arrested for possession of
child pornography.
The children were placed in emergency protective custody.
At the Sheriff’s Office, Jennifer admitted she was the one
who had the film, but denied knowing the pictures were on
the film.
Jennifer was booked into Stephens County Jail and bonded
out on $20,000 bail. Her preliminary hearing is set for October
10.
Michael first appeared before a judge September 5. His bond
was set at $50,000 and ordered back to court October 17.

A concerned father ended up in the
hospital September 2 after he tried to
protect his daughter from her violent
ex-husband.
Joe Christopher Caldwell, 35, was
charged with assault and battery with
a dangerous weapon in Stephens
County District Court.
According to the police affidavit,
Officer Joe Lard responded to a call
in the 2000 block of Holly. He made
contact with a woman who said she
saw her ex-husband, Joe Caldwell,
arrive at her home on Parkway. She
then ran out her back door and went into the alley where she
called her father to come pick her up. Caldwell saw her and her
father in his pickup and began to follow them in his truck.
The woman said when her dad turned east onto Holly,
Caldwell followed and cut in front of them and stopped them.
Caldwell then got out his pickup and tried pulling her from the
passenger seat. The woman’s father then got out the pickup and
grabbed a tire iron to get Caldwell off of her. When Caldwell let
go, the woman ran to a nearby house and knocked for help. He
then took the tire iron from the dad and struck him on top of
the head, causing a severe laceration.
Lard eventually caught up with Caldwell and he admitted to
striking the dad on the top of the head with a tire iron. Caldwell
was placed under arrest and taken to Stephens County Jail
where he was booked.
The dad was then taken to Duncan Regional Hospital for
treatment. The woman and her father later filed for a protective
order against Caldwell.

“Pep, The Cat-Murdering Dog” was a black

folklore tells us that Pennsylvania Governor

killing his wife’s cherished cat. Prison records
support this story: Pep’s inmate number (C2559) is skipped in prison intake logs and
inmate records.

Are you ashamed or repentant? Do you need encouragement? You are not alone.
Open God’s Word, The Bible. Start in Psalms and Proverbs. Study and live out Biblical
truths. Join a fellowship of believers. This message brought to you by Bible-Based
Counsel, Comanche, Oklahoma.
Call Jim at 580-467-6174.
“I am happy because you became sorrowful as God
intended. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to
salvation and leaves no regret.” 2 Corinthians 7:9-10.
By Lt. Jeff James
Oklahoma Highway Patrol
One of the things that is becoming
more prevalent, and with the
passing of the new open carry law,
will only continue to rise, is the number of people walking and driving
around armed. For law enforcement, this obviously creates some
challenges in our dealings with the public. I am going to attempt to
explain what we would like from the citizens who choose to go armed,
and what they can expect from us.
First, all people who wish to carry a gun on their person are
required to attend an approved concealed carry class. This goes for
those who wish to carry concealed or open. Upon completion of the
course and the requirements needed, you will be issued a Concealed
Carry License, or CCL. Let me point out, that having a CCL is a
privilege, not a right. It is issued by the state, and with it come some
responsibilities.
One of those responsibilities, and the one that is most important
to us law enforcement professionals, is the obligation to notify us
IMMEDIATELY upon contact. Lets say you get stopped for speeding
and you are a CCL holder and are armed, whether it is on your person
or just in your vehicle. The Trooper gets out of their car and asks
you to step back to them with your driver’s license and proof of
insurance. You should, before anything else, declare that you have
a CCL and are armed. Don’t wait until we see the CCL in your wallet
to tell us....that’s too late! They will then instruct you on what they
would like you to do to address this situation. There are several
things we may do at this point to accomplish this.
We may ask you to say (not reach for or move towards) where
the weapon is. Simply say the location, keeping your hands on the
steering wheel or where they can be seen. If its on your person, we
may wish to disarm you for the duration of the traffic stop, and will
give instructions accordingly. We may simply separate the weapon
from the ammunition and make the weapon safe, and then leave it
in your vehicle. Each officer will handle this in the way that he or
she chooses in order to maintain their own safety. None of these
methods are meant to infer that we feel threatened by a CCL holder,
or that we think you are a criminal or bad person. They are simply
ways that we can deal with the issue of a gun being present in order
to maintain our safety and the safety of others.
Hopefully, this will give you some guidelines on what we are
expecting when you come in contact with us while carrying a
firearm. With respect and understanding, we can all feel safe with an
armed citizen, while respecting that citizen’s right to carry. Thanks
for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

Abuse can happen in many forms. Physical, emotional and
sexual are common expressions of abuse and many people
just don’t know how to handle it. If you are an
abuser, stop it. If you are the victim of abuse,
let the words of the Bible guide you as you
decide how to handle the relationship with the
abuser. If you’re in danger, you need to get
away immediately. If your abuse is not life
threatening or is something in your past
that you still struggle with, take some time
to meditate on God’s Word on this subject.
The LORD rescues the godly;
he is their fortress in times of trouble.
The LORD helps them,
rescuing them from the wicked.
He saves them,
and they find shelter in him.

A Duncan man was taken into custody
August 16 after he allegedly admitted to
deputies he stole a semi-truck and then
abandoned it when it got stuck in a ditch.
Jeramie Stevenson, 30, was charged
August 17 with larceny of an automobile and
malicious injury to property in Stephens
County District Court.
According to the police affidavit, deputies
were called to Plato Rd., one mile east of
Duncan Lake Rd. early August 11 where an
abandoned semi was blocking the road. Soon
they discovered it was taken from a ranch in Velma and abandoned
in a ditch.
A witness told investigators that he had picked up a hitchhiker in
the area and took him into Duncan. Further investigation led them
to Stevenson, who admitted he was drunk when he took the truck.
During his escapade, Stevenson also damaged fencing, and several
trucks on the grounds had their windows busted and other minor
damage done to them.
Stevenson booked into the Stephens County Jail and was later
released on $10,000 bond. His preliminary hearing was set for
October 10.

Death Row
Anthony Banks
A federal appeals court has rejected the
appeal of an Oklahoma death row inmate
convicted of fi rst-degree murder for the
slaying of a woman more than 30 years ago.
The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
ruled in the case of Anthony Banks, who
was convicted of the June 6, 1979, killing of
24-year-old Sun Travis.
Travis was abducted and raped and her
partially clad body was found near a trash
heap. She had been shot in the head.
Banks was convicted largely on the basis of DNA evidence found on
Travis.
Banks is also serving a life sentence for the 1978 murder of a Tulsa
convenience store clerk. He wasn’t in custody when Travis was slain.

CHILD SUPPORT
10 | OCTOBER, 2012
OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma
Department of Human Services to impact the huge social
problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the
child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts
order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
It’s ALL about the KIDS!
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they have a chance at a
productive life. Children have the right to get support from both parents and do not
lose this right when a parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children, taxpayers often pay the cost
of raising children. When children receive public assistance and their parents pay no
child support, all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

What you’re saying
about this on...
Guy E: You gave permission to give swats.
What did you think they were gonna do give
him a little tap?
Lavender B: I say let the parents paddle that
administrator!
Shawn H: Boy is 13, why would parents allow
the school to punish? If they did and it was
not excessive, it is on them for handing the
responsibility of raising their children off to
someone else.
Rosemary L: I thought government schools
couldn’t spank anymore. When I was in 7th
grade they couldn’t. (I’m 31 now)
Kim P: I swear, this is what’s wrong with
kids nowadays. They are such pansies, along
with their parents. When we got “swats” or
punished by our parents we did not want to
call DHS, or go to the ER..... geez suck it up
parents!! YOU GAVE PERMISSION!!
Kimberly D: If this happened at home that
mother would be facing charges, the school
has no right to put bruises on any child. What
makes a school better than a parent?
Mark C: Oh that poor poor kid, how terrible
that he got a spanking for committing an act of
violence against another kid... Boo (beep) hoo,
and people wonder why kids are so spoiled and
think they can do whatever they want these
days... I can’t believe this is all over the news...
Rick S: Seriously. It’s a punishment. It’s not
supposed to feel good. What’s wrong with
people. Jailbird magazine may not be so full
if more kids had their backsides paddled. I got
them every day just like a one a day vitamin!
Probably kept me out of jail. Get swats at
school and get them for getting them at school
when you get home. Parents loving their kids
straight to jail !
Chelsea D: Just because u gave them
permission doesn’t mean they can leave
bruises like that! That was uncalled for! No
child should have to be taken to the er from
swats
Brittany P: i thought society today look
at spanking as child abuse? But their doing
it in school? Im all for a butt whoopin if my
children are not acting right, these days if you
spank your child in public its abuse and will
scar the child for life with embarrassment
and could get dhs involved, beating and
disciplining the child is two diff things! I know
my children will not grow up acting like fools,
that’s what’s wrong with this world kids get
away with anything, have no boundaries or
rules plus no guidance, i for one will not let the
school do my job in disciplining my child, they
can get suspended and get their punishment
when they get home, whether it is a spanking,
grounding or sentence writing.
Tina: I chose my kids not to be spanked and
here is why...... The DHS steps in if they hear
we are spanking our kids, so why should the
school be able to? As for this case, Had that
been the parents who spanked that kid and left
a bruise and someone at school seen it, you bet
your bottom that the DHS would be involved
and the parents investigated so it is not “ O,
they chose for their kid to be spanked so it is
what it is” Those parents and that kid trusted
that person enough to believe he would be
spanked the right way, and that does not
include bruises folks.
Christina A: some of you people are
completely ignorant. giving verbal permission
to “swat” your kid is a big difference between
hitting them hard enough to leave marks and
bruises. he was being punished for violence
but lets turn around and punish with more
violence?
Joseph B: Detention never helped me, but a
spanking set my a** straight
Jeffrey L: Wow. How times have changed.
I got my butt busted plenty. Always got butt
busted when i got home after getting busted at
school. I turned out great. Definitely knew right
from wrong. I had bruises on top of bruises n
never cried like a lil b**ch. Suck it up n get
tough. This is what i call the wimpification of
America. I, in NO way condone child abuse.
However, there has to be punishment of some
sort. Oh and not everyone gets a blue ribbon.
Somebody’s got to lose to teach n learn a
lesson. Life will go on.
April H: To all the parents out there that do
not believe in spanking, you need to bend over
and grab the chair yourselves. You are the
reason this generation is so delinquent and
misbehaved. If your mother was like mine, I
got my a** beat, I spanked all 4 of my kids and
if I do say so, they are very well behaved and
good honorable young adults!!
Be happy someone is trying to mold your kids
into people you obviously are not!!!!!
Richard W: the parent gave permission to
discipline the child, not to abuse the child!
Cordell Police said they are looking into a
school punishment that left a mark.
The mother of an Oklahoma elementary
student said her son was left bruised in a
recent paddling last week.
Linda Drew said her 6th grade son was caught
fighting at Cordell Elementary.
She and her husband were given the option of
suspension or swats.
They gave the school permission to spank
their child because they thought suspension
or detention would have hurt his grades and
football practice.
Hours later, their son was being checked out in the emergency room with
severe bruising.

HOCKING
An Oklahoma City man was jailed after a woman told police
he tried to get into her car while he masturbated on a street
corner.
Joshua Allan Hocking, 28, was arrested on an indecent
exposure complaint, according to a police report.
The woman said she was dropping her boyfriend off at
his job about 6:30 a.m. at SW 5 and MacArthur Boulevard
when they saw a man wearing pajama pants and no shirt
masturbating.
After the woman dropped off her boyfriend, she pulled back
up to the light and the man approached her car and tried to
open the passenger side door while continuing to masturbate.
He then started pounding on the window. The woman sped
away and called police.
When officers arrived, they found Hocking still at the street corner wearing the
clothing the woman described. He was arrested and taken to the Oklahoma County jail.
Police said Hocking has a prior conviction for indecent exposure and is a registered
sex offender. Records from the state Corrections Department show Hocking also was
convicted of sexual battery in 2006.

A mugging has resulted in felony charges for a Chickasha man as of Sept. 13.
On Sept. 8, Chickasha police office David Harper-Head was called to the 1100 block
of N. 9th Street to respond to a robbery. Harper-Head spoke to three men at the scene
who said Jimmy Howell, 32, approached him near the Frisco Stop and hit him in the
arm with a club.
After he got hit with the club, Howell pulled the man’s wallet out of his pants while he
was on the ground, he said. The wallet contained the main’s food stamp card, driver’s
license and social security card. Howell also called him a snitch during the attack,
according to the affidavit.
A witness confirmed the man’s story and added that Howell also hit him with the
club on his back and side. The witness had marks on his back and forearm as a result,
Harper-Head said.
A second witness said Howell’s weapon was actually a tied-up axe handle and gave
Harper-Head directions on where to find him. When officers caught up to Howell, he started running, but was
eventually caught at his mother’s house around 11:30 p.m. that day.
During his arrest, Howell said, “I didn’t rob anyone and I don’t know what is going on”, but he did admit to
hitting the men with the weapon. Howell added that the men “ganged up” on him and that one came at him with
a knife. He said he ran from officers because he did not want to go back to prison.
Howell was charged with first-degree robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.
He was previously convicted of possession of controlled substances, false impersonation, carrying a concealed
weapon and assault on a police officer. He has spent time in the Grady County and Stephens County Jails as well
as in prison. For Howell’s latest charges, he faces 20 years to life in prison if convicted.
Howell remains in jail on a $500,000 bond. He will appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 3.

The nose knows
Lluvia Rodriguez, a 29-year-old Houston
woman was jailed September 8 after she
allegedly bit her sister’s nose off after a
night of clubbing.
According to Houston police, Rodriguez
and her husband began arguing after the
couple and Rodriguez’s sister returned
from a night at several area clubs.
When the argument became heated,
Rodriguez’s sister attempted to intervene,
which angered Rodriguez. That’s when
Rodriguez bit her sister on the arm and
then proceeded to bite the woman’s nose
off.
The victim was rushed to Ben Taub
hospital, where doctors were able to reattach her nose. Rodriguez was
apprehended more than a month after the alleged incident happened.
The victim stated that she forgave her sister, but she did not want her
to be released from jail anytime soon.
Rodriguez was booked into jail and charged with aggravated assault
of a family member. Bond has not yet been set in the case.

PROBATION VIOLATION
A traffic stop landed two people in
jail for drug charges on Sept. 2.
Just before 2 a.m. that day, Chickasha
police officer Jeremy Alexander pulled
over a white GMC truck for not having
lit taillights or an illuminated license
plate. He spoke with Rodney Ates,
39, and Christopher Bryant, and
immediately smelled alcohol coming
from the vehicle.
Ates admitted to drinking a beer,
which made him fail a field sobriety
test. He was then arrested. When
Alexander talked to Bryant, he noticed
the floorboard of the truck was wet and
that there was a liquid trail coming
from the truck into the grass.
Alexander followed the liquid trail
and found a bag of marijuana, according
to the affidavit. About a foot away from
the marijuana, he found a balled-up
napkin with crack rocks inside, he said.
There was also a cup with Mountain
Dew nearby, which another officer said
he heard drop during the traffic stop.
Ates later admitted the Mountain Dew
was his but did not say why it spilled all throughout the truck or
on their drugs.
Both denied knowledge about the cup or the drugs, but Bryant
also admitted to having “several” drinks that night. Ates blew a
.13 blood alcohol concentration and was booked for possession
of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession
of paraphernalia, driving under the influence and three driving
offenses. Bryant was booked for possession of a controlled
substance, possession of marijuana and public intoxication.
Ates was previously convicted of second-degree murder in
Caddo County in 1997 and received a 30-year prison sentence,
half of which was suspended. He also received a DUI in Custer
County in 2008. He spent eight years in prison for the murder
conviction and will be on probation until 2027, according to his
rap sheet.
Bryant has convictions of assault with a deadly weapon and
possession of controlled substances on his record. He received a
nine-year prison sentence and served one year in prison for the
drug charge.
Both remain in jail. They have a court date set for 1:30 p.m.

LAWFUL ARREST
Drug task force agents arrested a Chickasha
man and woman after completing an
undercover drug operation Aug 17 and 29.
Chickasha police officer David Gatlin began
an investigation into narcotic sales July 16
and arrested Sherri Wise, 46, Aug. 17. A
confidential informant called Wise and paid
$20 for a Ziplock bag with methamphetamine
inside.
On July 25, the same informant used $40
to buy more methamphetamine from Dillion
Lewis, 23. A recording of the transaction
proved that Lewis asked the informant about
the drugs and provided them.
On Aug. 17, drug task force agents carried out a search warrant on
Wise’s house. When they found her, they told her to call her supplier
so he could make a delivery. She complied and called Lewis’ girlfriend,
according to the affidavit.
Wise said that the girlfriend delivers the methamphetamine when
she calls for it. That day, the girlfriend said she would come by Wise’s
place with more drugs, but she never showed, Gatlin said.
However, on Aug. 28, agents met with another woman who said
she buys her methamphetamine from a woman who “has a boyfriend
named Dillon”, according to the affidavit. Gatlin gave her $40 to buy
the drugs from Lewis and his partner. When she returned with the
drug, she said Lewis gave her the methamphetamine from a Crown
Royal bag that had a baseball-sized amount of the drug inside it. She
also said there were children in the house and that Lewis had a revolver
nearby.
The next day, the pair was arrested following a search warrant. In
an interview, the girlfriend said she started selling meth because she
lost her job two months ago but told Gatlin it was Lewis’ idea to start
dealing.
Wise was previously convicted of two counts of distributing
controlled substances. She received a 10-year prison sentence, half of
which was suspended.
Lewis and Wise remain in jail on a $100,000 bond. They have a court
date set for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 3.
