Marshall County, Alabama, Sheriff Scott Walls said a burglary suspect got more than he bargained for when he attempted to flee deputies
across a field belonging to a particularly ornery bull on July 8.
Walls said it started around 8 a.m. at a residence on Baldwin Drive
in Arab, Ala. The owner of a home on that street came home and found
a truck in his yard belonging to two people who were burglarizing his
home. The homeowner immediately called the Sheriff’s Office and
chased the suspects as they ran away.
A short time later, Sheriff Walls said deputies and Arab Police located
the suspect’s vehicle and pursued it to the Union Grove area, where the
truck crashed.
“The driver, Brad Lynn Hemby, 26, of Boaz, fled across a cow pasture
and grabbed the attention of a bull roaming the field. The bull also gave chase along with deputies,” Walls said.
With more on his mind than jail at that moment, Hemby continued to run. Bad turned to worse
for him when he fell into a barbed wire fence. He immediately surrendered to deputies, Walls said.
The female passenger in Hemby’s truck ran into a wooded area not occupied by a bull and has
not been located at this time.
After the arrest, deputies recovered stolen property from Hemby’s truck, Walls said. Hemby is
charged with burglary, theft, and attempting to elude. Deputies continue to search for the passenger.

Two Midland, Texas, men were arrested
after a police officer caught them driving
too fast down the street during a parade in
Velma.
According to the police report, the men
had been drinking, and their vehicle was
full of opened beer cans to prove it.
On August 1, a Velma police officer was
driving south on Main Street following the
parade when another officer flagged him
down. She said she had stopped a vehicle
that was traveling at a “high rate of speed”
down Main Street during the parade. She
was concerned because there were hundreds of little kids standing on the side of
the road collecting candy during the festivities.
The driver, 56-year-old William Glen
Rickey, told her he didn’t have a driver’s
license. By the time the other officer made
contact with the men, they had switched
spots and 58-year-old Steven Earl Rickey
was now in the driver’s seat.
The officer noticed several open beer cans
in plain sight inside of the truck. He asked the men to exit the truck
and patted them down. In William Rickey’s pocket, the officer found
a small pill bottle containing a green leafy substance.
The officer asked him what it was -- the man replied that it was
medical marijuana.
Steven Rickey is being charged with public intoxication. He was
released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 6, 2015.
William Rickey is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance, transporting opened container of beer and driving
without a driver’s license. He was released on a $10,000 bond and is
scheduled to appear in court on October 7, 2015.

A Lawton man was arrested in Duncan after he tried to run away
from officers because he was riding in a stolen car.
20-year-old Tevin Terrell Lewis wasn’t the only one in the car, but
he was the only one who wasn’t able to get away.
According to the affidavit, a Duncan officer went to the area of Main
and 18th shortly after 6 a.m. on August 2 due to reports of an auto
theft. It wasn’t long before he spotted the car that had been reported
stolen. He tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver accelerated and led
the officer on a chase, eventually pulling into an apartment complex
in the 400 block of S. 27th.
While the vehicle was still moving, two men jumped out of the car
and took off running. The car ran into a fence and came to a stop.
The officer took off running after the driver, but he lost the man after he jumped a tall privacy fence in the southeast section of the complex. The officer ran around the fence and he
saw the passenger running toward him. When the man saw the officer, he started to run the
other way.
The officer pulled out his Taser and ordered the man to the ground. The man, identified as
Lewis, told the officer he didn’t have an ID and he didn’t know his social security number.
He only knew the driver’s first name. He later showed police his accomplice’s Facebook page.
Lewis is being charged with knowingly concealing stolen property and obstructing officer.
His bond was set at $5,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on October 7, 2015.

When a Duncan woman was caught
stealing a motorcycle from her neighbor, she told police she was looking for dead bodies and the poison a
neighbor was feeding her.
On July 23, a Duncan officer was
dispatched to the 1700 block of
Meadowview at approximately 6:50
p.m. to investigate a stolen motorcycle. The victim told him he and his
woman caught 43-year-old Rebecca
J. Robinson pushing his motorcycle
out of their storage shed. He said this
wasn’t their first encounter with Robinson -- the couple had lots of
problems with Robinson walking onto their property.
When they asked her what she was doing with the bike, she took
off running to her house. The man said he found a pair of tree pruners and the lock from the storage shed lying next to the motorcycle.
When police went to ask Robinson about the alleged theft, she told
them there were dead bodies under her house. She said she wasn’t
going to talk about the motorcycle until officers checked for the bodies.
An officer was able to calm her down. He asked if she cut the lock
on the storage shed and moved the motorcycle. She admitted to
breaking into the shed, but she said it was only so she could look for
dead bodies and the poison her neighbor was feeding her.
Police arrested the woman and transported her to jail.
Robinson is being charged with burglary in the second degree. Her
bond was set at $10,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on
October 7, 2015.
Yes, I took the bike -- but I was
looking for dead bodies!

What you’re saying
about this on...
Peggy C: I NEVER text or talk on my phone while I’m driving but I have been in
the car with a woman who was calling her brother or husband trying to get directions and
I had to sit there and pray that we wouldn’t crash into something! So yea, I’m very happy
to see this law go into effect!
Bradd R: Your opening statement is not factual. It will not be illegal to use your
cell phone while driving. It will be illegal to use social media, read or write emails or to read
or send text messages while operating a motor vehicle.
Julie H: I don’t think the police will stop and if we have too they also should have
too. I don’t talk while driving to risky.
Walter C: Im not a cop hater but i see alot of cops on theyre phone while driving
hope they stop to
Leland S: Same here in Arkansas . Was almost sideswiped 2 times last week. She
was texting!
Brandon H: I never talk or text while driving ..when you drive you are responsible for yourself and the safety of others on the road ...and I feel if you text while driving you
should have your license yanked for you are not safe enough or responsible enough to drive
Jerry H: I have Bluetooth. Keep my phone in my purse
Toni D: I see people texting all the time makes me crazy sure hope it helps stop
people from doing it...
Cory W: Hit the ignore button because it can wait
The new law making it illegal to use cell phones while driving is taking effect in
November. Will this law deter you from texting/talking while driving? If so, what
are you doing now to change?
KJRH posted this story. We’re curious
as to what our readers would do.
Adam H: Pfft. I see that everywhere. I’m a truck driver and see it happen everyday
on the road. It never fails. I’ve even seen law enforcement do it
Debra C: I never text or talk and drive but I hope it stops people from doing it but
I don’t think it will. Even police officer’s talk on on there phone’s and drive you see it every
day
Melinda C: I’ve saw bus drivers on their phones with a bus full of children... I’m
glad to see this going into effect.
Merlin K: Get hands free for your car
Teresa H: It’s been in effect in Nevada for a couple years and people still ignore
it..frown emoticon
Ryan M: Thank you Nannystatists
Tim M: About dam time phone users are worse then drunk drivers at least a drunk
is looking at the road unlike texting
Tony G: it isn’t going to change nothing I see cops do it every single day.
Jonathan M: Hell no!
Karen M: Just in Oklahoma?
Boyd W: If they ara looking at you hard enough to see you’re on your phone they
aren’t watching their own driving
Cliff S: More Government telling me how to live.

Nathan Tyler Ballinger, 29, was caught driving with a gun and a blunt on
July 24. The Chickasha man was arrested because he was a felon driving
around with the items in a stolen car.
According to the police report, a Chickasha officer responded to a call of a
locations of a possible stolen vehicle shortly after 8 p.m.
The officer found the car in the 1100 block of W. Harvey Avenue, and he
recognized the driver as Ballinger from previous dealings. He asked the man
to step out of the vehicle.
Ballinger appeared to be under the influence of something. He also smelled
like burnt marijuana. He admitted to the officer he had smoked some weed earlier that day.
When the officer asked him whose car he was in, he said a woman’s name. That same woman
had reported her vehicle stolen earlier that day.
The woman agreed to let the officer search her car. He found a pistol under the driver’s floorboard where Ballinger had been sitting. He also found a blunt -- Ballinger told him it would
test positive for marijuana.
The officer placed the man under arrest and took him to jail. He was advised Ballinger was
a convicted felon.
Ballinger had also been right about the blunt. It tested positive for THC.
Ballinger is charged with possession of firearms after conviction or during probation and
possession of controlled dangerous substance. His bond was set at $5,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on August 12, 2015.

A very intoxicated Chickasha man
yelled “assault and battery on a police officer” as he resisted arrest and
kicked at an officer during an arrest on
August 1.
At least he knew what he was doing
wrong!
A Chickasha officer was dispatched
to the 500 block of N. Third Street
shortly after midnight. On the way to
the scene, he was advised by another
officer that the suspect had taken off
running.
When he arrived, he saw 29-year-old Jimmy Don Robertson running from the other officer. He took off running after the man and
took him to the ground.
While placing Robertson in handcuffs, the officer noticed he
smelled like alcohol.
Robertson started talking, but his speech was thick and slurred.
The officer attempted to walk to the patrol car, but it seemed Robertson was determined to make this arrest as difficult as possible.
According to the police report, he refused to walk. He continued to
resist even after he was placed in the patrol car.
And arriving at the jail wasn’t enough to make the man give up
either. He started yelling, “Assault and battery on a police officer!”
While screaming, he started kicking at the officer. He also very loudly
told officers, “F--- you guys.”
The angry drunk man was eventually booked into jail.
Robertson is being charged with public intoxication and resisting
an officer. His bond was set at $2,000. He pled guilty to the charges

Chickasha man Thomas Lee Lail, 40,
attempted to steal some bicycle chains,
a crafting knife and a magazine from
Walmart while drinking an energy
drink he didn’t pay for. He was arrested August 6 when an employee caught
him in the act.
According to the affidavit, a Chickasha officer was dispatched to the store
in the 2000 block of S. First Street at
approximately 3:53 p.m. When he arrived, he met with Lail and the employee.
Lail told the officer he was ashamed, and he shouldn’t have taken
the items.
The employee told the officer he first became suspicious when he
saw Lail walking around drinking an energy drink. Lail then walked
to the crafting department and grabbed a knife. He went to the bicycle
department and selected some bicycle chains.
Lail obviously had a plan, because he took the knife and chains to
the bedding department. Using the knife, he opened up the chains
and put the items in his pocket. He set his energy drink down and
went to the magazine rack. He grabbed a magazine then took off
walking out of the door.
The employee stopped him and escorted him to the office.
While speaking to the man, the officer searched his person. He
found three pills identified as acetaminophen/oxycodone.
Lail is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance and larceny of merchandise from retailer. His bond was set at
$5,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on September 9, 2015.
