ANOTHER MURDER IN
PAYNE COUNTY
A Skiatook man took the life of another man last
month and is now sitting in the Payne County Jail
without bond for his alleged crime.
Michael Angus Bigheart, 41, was charged April
24 with Murder in The First Degree or In The Alternative Manslaughter in The First Degree, AFCF, in Payne County District Court.
According to a Stillwater PD press release, on Friday, April 21, detectives with
Stillwater Police Dept. (SPD) made an arrest in regards to the stabbing incident
that took place on Saturday, April 15, at 810 S. Jardot. The victim, Justin Springer, 35, of Stillwater, died as a result of the stabbing.
Investigators with SPD collected information and gained probable cause that
Bigheart was the suspect in this case. Investigators presented the specifics of the
case to the Payne County District Attorney’s office. A first degree murder charge
was filed against Bigheart and an arrest warrant was issued.
SPD Detectives went in Skiatook to conduct a follow-up investigation. Detectives located, arrested, and transported Bigheart to SPD jail.
This case is still under investigation by SPD Criminal Investigations Division
and anyone with any information is asked to contact the SPD Tipline at (405)
533-8477.

MAY IS NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH
AWARENESS MONTH
Mental health is a hot topic.
This is good news. It means the
stigma for mental health issues is
slowly going away. Mental health
issues are finally getting the attention they deserve. Healthcare
workers and individuals feel they
can discuss mental health more
openly. However, that doesn’t
mean there isn’t still work to do,
however.
As a whole, we often misunderstand mental health because it is hard to
define. Additionally, mental health includes several areas. These areas involve
one’s social, emotional, and psychological well-being. Mental health affects
thoughts, feelings, and actions. When one has positive mental health, they
are better equipped to handle stress, be more productive, and realize their
full potential.
While we focus on our physical wellbeing, the food we eat, exercise, and
getting regular check-ups for vision and dental care, we often forget to take
stock of our emotional and spiritual needs. Everyday demands take their toll.
HOW TO OBSERVE #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth
Share the message. Taking care of our mental health is as normal as eating
healthy, exercising, or even saving for the future. Share your story to help others understand that achieving mental health is a daily process.

JUNK IN THE TRUNKS
A Tulsa man was taken into custody after
deputies found something in the man’s shorts
that wasn’t suppose to be there.
Gary Parchem, 53, was charged April 27 with
trafficking in illegal drugs, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of paraphernalia, and driving under
suspension, in Creek County District Court.
According CCSO, on Saturday, April 15, deputies pulled over Parchem in
the Oakhurst area. Parchem has previously been cited 13 times for driving under suspension/revoked/operating a vehicle without a license. In Parchems’
shorts, deputies found a Crown Royal bag containing a pipe, a pinch hitter, marijuana, and two clear baggies containing approximately 20 grams of
a crystal substance. The crystal substance tested presumptive positive for
methamphetamine.
Parchem pleaded not guilty at his preliminary hearing on May 2 and bond
was set at $107,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 10.

AROUND THE STATE
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
Enid man Walter Lee Hill Jr., 40, was put behind bars after he allegedly fired a gun at officers during an hours-long
standoff on March 16.
According to reports, Enid officers were dispatched to
the 1200 block of East Elm at approximately 3:52 p.m. to
investigate reports of a man firing a gun into the air. When
they arrived, they couldn’t find the man who was firing the shots.
A second call at 4:27 p.m. advised officers that there were shots fired in the area of 12th Street
and Cypress. They went to the location and met with a witness who said the shots were fired at
a nearby residence.
Officers went to the residence. A woman told them that Hill shot at her inside the residence.
Officers surrounded the residence and made announcements to Hill.
Hill then fired shots at the officers from inside the residence. Officers returned fire.
The SWAT team was called to the scene. Garfield County deputies, North Enid police officers,
and Waukomis officers also responded to the scene.
Officers spoke to Hill on the phone, but they couldn’t convince the man to surrender. After
nearly six hours, they deployed gas canisters inside the residence.
Payne County deputies arrived at the scene in armored vehicles to assist. Hill surrendered
shortly thereafter, around 9:42 p.m.
Hill is being charged with six counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a
firearm after a former felony conviction. His bond was set at $1M and he is scheduled to appear
in court on April 17, 2023.

BLODDY SUNDAY
A 44-year-old Chandler man was arrested after
he allegedly walked to a relative’s house and shot
a 16-year-old girl on April 9.
According to the affidavit, a Lincoln County
deputy was dispatched to South 3420 Road at
approximately 7:45 p.m. The victim’s father told the deputy that they had just
finished hunting easter eggs, and his wife went outside to smoke. She texted
him to come outside ASAP. When the man went to the front door, he saw a man
carrying a gun walking toward the house. The man locked the door and told his
kids to go to the back room.
While he was loading his gun, he heard a gunshot. He then heard his 16-yearold daughter yelling. The man found the teen in the living room - she had been
shot in the leg.
The man ran outside, but he didn’t locate the shooter. He said his wife told him
Jodie Andrew Jones was the shooter. Jones was related to the man who lived
nearby, but the man said Jones had a drug problem, and they didn’t associate.
The deputy found shoe prints leading to Jones’ residence. He also found a
spent 16-gauge shotgun shell on the front porch. Inside, the deputy saw blood
and a shotgun wadding from a shell.
The victim’s mom said she saw Jones walk to the front door and fire his gun at
the door. She said he had been on their property about a week before, looking
for a woman named Tiffany. She didn’t know who Jones was talking about.
Deputies conducted a search warrant at the man’s home. They found a shotgun in a closet loaded with the same type of ammo found at the scene of the
shooting.
While speaking to deputies, Jones appeared to be under the influence of
drugs. He told police he didn’t shoot the victim. He said her dad shot her.
Jones is being charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon and
felony discharging firearm into dwelling. His bond was set at $250,000, and he
was scheduled to appear in court on May 4, 2023.

JURY FINDS
TRIPLETT GUILTY OF
KILLING EMPLOYEE
Guthrie man Daniel Joseph Triplett, 68, was found
guilty of killing his employee - the victim’s body was
found buried under a septic tank in 2021.
Triplett previously served as a Guthrie councilman.
According to reports, the 50-year-old victim’s
daughter reported the man missing on September 29,
2021. She told police no one had seen or heard from him since September 20.
The victim’s boss, Triplett, told the woman he fired the victim for threatening a customer. He said he gave him $1,000 in severance and dropped him off at the laundromat.
Investigators reviewed footage from the laundromat. They watched Triplett’s car drive
by the business, but he didn’t stop.
The victim’s body was located on October 21, 2021. It was buried under a septic
tank. The medical examiner concluded that the victim had been shot in the back. He
also had fractured ribs and a perforated lung.
Reports state that during the trial, the victim’s daughter told the jury that her father
told her a couple times, “If I ever go missing, Dan did it.”
Triplett claimed self defense.
Triplett was found guilty of murder in the first degree and desecration of a human
corpse. He is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing on June 16, 2023.

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty 13 | MAY 2023 LINCOLN COUNTY
