the grand illusion
A 26-year-old Tahlequah man told police he
didn’t remember assaulting a couple after he
allegedly entered their home and violently attacked them on July 11.
According to reports, Cherokee County deputies were dispatched to a burglary in progress
on Boathouse Lane in Park Hill. They were advised the suspect had left the scene and was
walking toward another house.
Deputies went to the house where the suspect was last seen. They found a man, identified as Michael Ryan Ballew, Jr., who matched
the suspect description.
A woman at that house told police she, Ballew, and Ballew’s girlfriend
were outside when Ballew started talking gibberish and punching the air.
He ran into the woods and started screaming “mom and dad.”
Around 10 minutes later, the woman found Ballew on the back porch of
the neighbor’s house yelling, “Let me in!” She was able to convince him
to go home and take a shower, thinking maybe the heat was making him
delusional.
Deputies spoke to the victims the next day. One of the victims was a
70-year-old disabled Vietnam veteran. His wife was 66-years-old.
The man said his dogs were barking, so he looked outside and saw a
man standing outside his front door. He couldn’t see the man’s face, so
he thought maybe his grandson was outside. When he opened the door
to see, the man pushed him to the ground and walked inside his home.
The victim said the man punched him in the face and repeatedly hit and
kicked him as he tried to crawl to his room to get a gun.
The victim grabbed his gun, but the gun jammed.
Ballew then started assaulting the victim’s wife. The victim grabbed another gun from his closet. He pointed it at the man and ordered him to stop
hitting his wife.
Around that time, the victim heard a woman yelling for him to come
home.
Ballew agreed to speak to investigators about the alleged assault. He
told police that he was depressed. He said he was outside listening to
music with his mom and girlfriend.
The next thing he remembered was his mom yelling at him to get off the
neighbor’s porch. He said didn’t remember entering the home or assaulting the couple.
Ballew is being charged with two counts of aggravated assault and battery. His bond was set at $50,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court
on September 2, 2020.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty 11 | SEPTEMBER 2020 SEQUOYAH COUNTY
dog days of summer
A Sallisaw couple is facing 30 counts of cruelty
to animals after authorities seized 84 dogs from
their Sequoyah County home on July 16.
According to reports, Sequoyah County deputies were dispatched to a home on E. 1132 Road
to investigate a domestic disturbance. When they
arrived, they noticed approximately 17 dogs that
were inside wire cages and plastic storage bins
inside the home. The dogs were being kept in inhumane conditions.
The next day, the Tulsa SPCA, Forever Friends
Humane Society and the Alliance for Animals assisted deputies in removing 84 dogs from the
home of Tamara Turman and Wesley Chronister,
both 60 years old.
Some of the dogs were covered with matted fur
and feces.
Reports state investigators at the scene said
when the animals were let out of their cage and
put on grass, they just walked in a circle because
they had never been free out of a cage before.
The couple was placed under arrest.
Chronister is being charged with abuse/exploitation/neglect of vulnerable adult and 30 counts of
cruelty to animals. His bond was set at $10,000.
Tamara Turman is being charged for 30 counts of cruelty to animals. Her
bond was set at $5,000.
They are both scheduled to appear in court on August 26, 2020.

A Florida Man who had cocaine on his nose
when the vehicle he was traveling in was
stopped by police told arresting officers that the
drug was not his, investigators say.
Fabricio Jimenez, 20, was a passenger in a
car that was pulled over during a 3:45 AM traffic stop in Tampa.
When a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office
deputy approached the auto, the female cop
“immediately noticed Jimenez had a white
powdery substance on his nose she recognized to be powder cocaine,” according to investigators.
Jimenez’s nose was subsequently swabbed
by police and a field test returned a positive result for the presence of cocaine in the sample.
Deputies photographed Jimenez and his dusty
nose during the traffic stop.
A search of Jimenez’s shoes yielded a small bag of cocaine, while police also
seized a backpack containing 250 grams of marijuana and 13 Xanax pills.
Jimenez, arrested on three felony narcotics possession charges, “attempted
to tell the deputies the cocaine on his nose was not his,” according to the sheriff’s
office.
It does not appear Jimenez offered an explanation as to how someone else’s
cocaine got into his nose.
Jimenez is also facing probation violation charges in connection with his conviction last year on cocaine and marijuana charges. After pleading guilty to three
felonies, Jimenez was sentenced in November to two years probation and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service.
Jimenez was arrested last August following a traffic stop in Tampa. Cops found
11 bags of pot and 4 bags of cocaine in a backpack inside the 2009 Honda
Accord (Jimenez was alone in the car). Jimenez, cops reported, “admitted the
marijuana and cocaine belonged to him, and he sells the marijuana for additional
money.”

Former little league coach
arrested on molestation charges
A 21-year-old Wagoner man was taken into
custody after he was accused of sexually molesting several children.
Brock Aaron Stevens was charged July 31
with four counts of lewd molestation, and one
out of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, in Wagoner County District Court.
According to the Wagoner County Sheriff’s
Office, on July 27, Wagoner County Sheriff’s
Investigators received information of four minor children in Wagoner that may have been
sexually abused by an adult. Investigators
began speaking with the alleged victims, and
gathering other evidence. During the investigation it was learned that Stevens had befriended the victims over two years ago. The
investigation uncovered that Stevens had supplied the minors with alcohol
and Vape Pods. Also during the investigation it was learned that Stevens allegedly began the sexual abuse approximately two years ago. The victims’
ages during the abuse looks to be as young as 12-13, and as old as 15 years
old.
Brock Stevens was arrested without incident on August 3.
Wagoner County Sheriff Chris Elliott stated, “These cases are never easy
or comfortable to talk about. I commend the victims for coming forward and
being brave.”
Sheriff Elliott continued, “Unfortunately we have learned that Mr. Stevens
has also coached little league basketball and football. It is quite possible there
may be more victims. Please contact the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office with
any information for my Investigators to follow up if this is the case.”
“Parents talk to your children. These are hard conversations, but necessary
conversations as we attempt to protect the most vulnerable,” he added.
