A Spiro man was arrested for burglary on Christmas Eve after
trying to get Christmas presents the wrong way.
Just before noon that day, Poteau police officer Mark Kannady
went to a home on the 300 block of End of Road Street and met
with the caretaker of the residence, who said the back door was
kicked in. Surveillance footage showed a man at the scene who
was wearing a cap with an “O” on the front and dark gloves. He
left the house in a red Ford Ranger, she said.
The caretaker said she believed the person in the video was
Thomas Skinner, 28. Kannady recognized the name and knew
he drove a car matching the caretaker’s description, so he found
Skinner around town just before 1:30 p.m. that day.
However, Skinner wouldn’t go quietly. He ran a stop sign and
led Kannady on a high speed chase until he pulled into a vacant
lot so he could flee on foot, according to the affidavit. Kannady found Skinner under a trailer
and arrested him, he said.
While on the scene, a woman approached Kannady and said Skinner stole her truck, which
is the one he drove away from the crime scene. Moreover, when Skinner was booked, his
clothes matched the caretaker’s description. In the truck’s bed were stolen items from the
caretaker’s residence, according to the affidavit.
Skinner remains in custody. He will appear in court at 9 a.m. Jan. 22.

A Shady Point woman called police to give her a ride Dec. 29,
but she ended up getting busted for drug charges.
Around 4:45 a.m. that day, Poteau police patrolman Cody
Johnson reported Jennifer Black, 33, flagged him and another
officer down while driving. Black was walking southbound and
started waving her arms in attempts to get them to pull over,
he said.
Johnson pulled over on the road and then Black walked over
to the passenger side of the patrol car to speak to the other officer. She said she needed a ride to a residence downtown, but
she could barely string her words together. The officer asked
Black if she drank that evening, but she said she didn’t, despite
the overwhelming smell of alcohol on her breath. She then said
she was drinking and was arrested on a public intoxication
complaint.
When Black was booked at the Poteau City Jail, she said she had a pipe on her purse. The
officers checked her purse and found a pipe with burnt methamphetamine residue, according
to the affidavit. They then took Black to county lockup.
Black first appeared in court on Jan. 7 and pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of a
controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. She received a court-appointed
attorney the same day.
Black remains in custody. She will appear in court at 9 a.m. Jan. 22.

During this month, and at all times, parents need to be aware of the issue of teen
dating violence. For as much as domestic
violence among adults is an issue that is too
often not discussed -- and too often kept a
secret by the victim -- teen dating violence is
even less discussed, and even less reported
by victims. Nevertheless, in a recent survey
of over 4,000 9th through 12th graders, one
in five reported being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner.
The sad fact is that two out of three teens
in an abusive relationship don’t ever tell anyone about the abuse. For girls, when they experience serious sexual abuse they only report it to an authority figure six percent of the time.
This makes it very difficult to know when your teen has become a victim of dating violence.
Still, there are warning signs that every parent and teacher can and should look for. Because teenage years are difficult (and secretive) enough as it is, it’s important to be aware of
these warning signs, and to approach your teen in a way that will make them feel comfortable
talking with you.
For more information, contact your local DHS.

A Talihina man has pled guilty to federal child sexual abuse charges. Donad LaQuinn West, III, 38, was indicted last November on
charges of Sexual Exploitation Of A Minor Child.
The charge arose from an investigation by the Choctaw Tribal Police, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and the Federal
Bureau of Investigation.
The Indictment alleged that on or about a date uncertain to the
Grand Jury between January 22, 2010 and January 22, 2011, in
Latimer County, West, did, employ, use, induce, entice and coerce
a minor child under the age of eighteen to engage in sexually explicit
conduct, specifically, the lascivious exhibition of the genitals and pubic area of said minor child, for the purpose of producing a visual
depiction of such conduct, which such visual depiction was produced using materials that
had been mailed, shipped and transported in interstate and foreign commerce.
The Honorable Kimberly E. West, Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court
for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, in Muskogee, accepted the defendant’s guilty plea and
ordered the completion of a pre-sentence report. Sentencing will be scheduled following its
completion.
The statutory range of punishment is not less than 15 years or more than 30 years imprisonment and/or up to a $250,000.00 fine and not less than 5 years nor more than Life of
supervised release.
West pleads guilty to
federal charges

There are times in our life when
others hurt or anger us. We sometimes
feel a strong desire to settle the score.
Proverbs 20:22 says Do not say, ‘I’ll
pay you back for this wrong!’ Wait for
the Lord and he will deliver you.”
The feelings that drive us to revenge
are powerful and strong, their
destructive nature can consume us.
The Bible responds with a “Do not...”
statement, not just a word of teaching
or advice but this verse is worded with
the strength of a command.
We would be better off to stifle the
thoughts of revenge early and quickly;
we should not even speak about it. When thoughts of revenge come we should
redirect them to thoughts of waiting on the Lord.
There are many reasons why we need to wait for the Lord to act. To wait without
giving in or compromise is a statement of faith. To wait is a testimony that we
believe in the promises of God and his commitment to us.
We are to wait, not for time to heal all wounds, or wait for an opportunity, or
wait for the sake of waiting, we are to wait for The Lord. We wait on purpose
for the one who created all things and has power to change all things, he is the
one who rules the universe and will judge the hearts of all men. We wait and we
should focus on the Lord and not our anger.
This verse ends with a conditional promise. The condition of course is not to
act on our desire to get revenge but to wait for the Lord instead. The promise is
that he will deliver. It suggest that the Lord will make things right, but it is not
specific; will the Lord deliver us from our enemies, or the situation or maybe
more importantly from ourselves and our bitterness?
As much as we need to be delivered from our own enemies we also need to be
delivered from our desire for revenge. It may be that even though God is a just
God he is more interested in changing our natures than balancing justice. He
allows circumstances in our lives to give us the challenges we need to grow. He
may sometimes deliver us not from our oppressors but from ourselves.
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY
ABOUT REVENGE?

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma
Department of Human Services to impact the huge social
problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the
child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts
order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
It’s ALL about the KIDS!
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they have a chance at a
productive life. Children have the right to get support from both parents and do not
lose this right when a parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children, taxpayers often pay the cost
of raising children. When children receive public assistance and their parents pay no
child support, all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

dui/ toc domestic a&b ASSAULT ON POLICE OFFICER
An underage Hartshorne man brought in the New Year with jail
time after police say he assaulted them while drunk.
Around 10:10 p.m. that evening, Hartshorne officer Rocky Bingham responded to a fight at the Lindley’s Grocery Store parking lot.
Bingham arrived to see Robin Holloway, 20, and a woman walking
across the parking lot.
When Bingham asked them about the fight, Holloway said there
was no fight and he was just trying to go home. However, Bingham
smelled alcohol on Holloway’s breath and saw he had a bruise under his eye and cuts on his fist. Holloway then said he was unsure
whether he was in a fight or not.
At that time, Bingham arrested Holloway for public intoxication.
When he tried to take Holloway to the city jail, Holloway became irate and started thrashing
around in the backseat. Bingham’s patrol car has no cage separating the back seat from the
front, he said.
Holloway tried to headbutt Bingham from the backseat, leading the officer to pull over in
order to restrain him. Another officer came to help Bingham, and by that point Holloway
kept thrashing around and headbutted that officer on the left side of his face. Once they
finally overpowered Holloway, they put him in the city drunk tank, then took him to the
county jail on felony assault charges after he sobered up.
Holloway posted a $5,000 bond Jan. 3 and is banned from drinking as a condition of his
bond, court records show. He will appear in court at 9 a.m. Feb. 1.

McAlester police officers arrested
a Hartshorne man after the man
brought a knife to a gunfight.
Just before midnight Jan. 3, officers
Ken Bethune and Chris Troussel were
on patrol after hearing a report of a
gunshot near A Street. During their
patrol, they received a complaint
about a stabbing at the 200 block of
West Seneca.
The officers drove to the area and
spoke to a man who was lying on the
floor of the residence. Bethune noticed blood on the man and realized
he had cuts on his head and finger.
The man said Manuel Rivera, 45, stabbed him a couple of blocks
away.
The officers drove to the 1000 block of South Elm Street, where
Rivera’s home is, in order to speak to him. A woman there told them
Rivera was at a nearby duplex.
At the duplex, Rivera spoke to Bethune, who soon after grabbed
him by the arm and pulled him into the front yard. Rivera denied
stabbing the man.
“I didn’t stab anyone,” he said. “I beat the s--- out of a guy, but I
didn’t stab anyone.”
Bethune put Rivera in the patrol car and took him to the county
jail for booking. During booking, jailers took photos of blood on Rivera’s left thumb and hand, which were consistent with the man’s
stab wounds.
At the hospital, the man said Rivera used a lock blade knife that
was missing pieces from his side. The knife’s owner, who is roommates with the stabbed man, told the officers Rivera took a knife
from his collection during the altercation.
Rivera remains in custody on a $30,000 bond. He will appear in
court at 9 a.m. Jan. 25.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol
As a Trooper, we see a lot of stuff
driving the roads of Oklahoma
everyday. I’m going to discuss
some stuff that I have seen, or have
heard from other Troopers’ stuff they have seen. Some of this stuff
will have you shaking your head, but each and every thing I am going
to talk about today has the potential to cause an accident and hurt
or kill people. Some of you will read this and wonder if I am talking
about you! I’m talking about things that fall under the category of
inattention.
I’ll start with the usual...talking on a cell phone. A significant
portion of the driving population talk on their cells while driving, and
while it is not against the law, it does divide a driver’s attention from
the roadway. Divided attention slows reaction time. Slower reaction
time can be the difference between a near-hit or an accident! Take it
a step further, and you have texting while driving. There is a national
campaign going on addressing this very dangerous activity. Not only
is your attention divided, but usually your sight is divided between a
screen and the roadway...not a good situation. With texting becoming
a normal form of communication, this problem will continue, and it
has and will cost lives.
Now to some other stuff. I’ve worked crashes where someone was
passing food they had just got at the drive-thru back to their children...
as well as people eating while driving. I’ve seen and worked crashes
involving some ladies putting make-up on while driving....same
context as texting, the eyes are divided up between the mirror and
the road. Guys, you have your own version, using an electric razor to
shave while driving!
Finally, some out of the ordinary stuff. I’ve seen people driving
down the road, with a novel or magazine sitting on the steering
wheel so they can read it while driving! Does that sound safe to
you? Obviously they weren’t seeing everything on the road, because
they didn’t see the Trooper right next to them! Also, watching a
movie has been the culprit of some distracted driving. There is even
a law that forbids a TV screen to be in the driver’s view.
All of these examples are instances of inattentive driving, and all
have caused accidents. How many of them have you done yourself? If
you have an accident while doing one of these or similar activities,
will the loved one of someone killed think that was a good reason for
them to die?
At a minimum, you crash and we give you a citation for inattentive
driving that results in an accident. Operating a 4500 lb plus vehicle
requires your undivided attention, and we owe it to the others on the
road as well as yourself, to give it.
Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

As a female shopper exited a convenience store, a
man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911
immediately and the woman was able to give them
a detailed description of the snatcher, and police apprehended him within minutes. They put him in the
cruiser and drove back to the store. The thief was
then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a
positive ID. To which he replied, “Yes Offi cer, that’s
her. That’s the lady I stole the purse from.”
In Bent Forks, Ill., kidnapers of ice-cube magnate
Worth Bohnke sent a photograph of their captive
to Bohnke’s family. Bohnke was seen holding up a
newspaper. It was not that day’s edition and, in fact,
bore a prominent headline relating to Nixon’s trip
to China. This was pointed out to the kidnapers in a
subsequent phone call. They responded by sending
a new photograph showing an up-to-date newspaper. Bohnke, however, did not appear in the picture.
When this, too, was refused, the kidnapers became
peevish and insisted that a photograph be sent to
them showing all the people over at Bohnke’s house
holding diff erent issues of Success Magazine. They
provided a mailing address and were immediately
apprehended. They later admitted to FBI agents
they did not understand the principle involved in
the photograph/newspaper concept. “We thought it
was just some kind of tradition,” said one.
After being arrested for stealing a car, the judge
asked the man, “how do you plead?” Instead of saying guilty or not guilty the man said: “Before we go
any further, judge, let me explain why I stole the
car.” The judge ruled in record time.
When two service station attendants refused to
hand over the cash to an intoxicated robber, the
man threatened to call the police. They still refused,
so the robber called the police and was arrested.
Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn’t control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the
lineup to repeat the words, “Give me all your money
or I’ll shoot,” the man shouted, “That’s not what I
said!”
In a small town of 1700, a student attempted to
rob the local convenience store wearing his letterman’s jacket. He did not realize that he was the only
male named Dana in the whole town.

Death row
Steven Ray Thacker
Attorney General Scott Pruitt
on Jan. 7 fi led a request with
the Oklahoma Court of Criminal
Appeals to set an execution date
for Mayes County death row
inmate Steven Ray Thacker, 42.
The U.S. Supreme Court
denied Thacker’s fi nal appeal on
Monday.
In December 2002,
Thacker pleaded guilty to the
kidnapping, rape and fi rstdegree murder of Laci Dawn
Hill, 25, of Bixby.
Thacker met Hill in her
home on Dec. 23, 1999, after
answering an ad Hill placed
to sell a pool table. When his attempt to rob Hill failed, Thacker
kidnapped her and took her to a rural cabin and raped her. Thacker
attempted to strangle Hill, but eventually stabbed her in the chest
and neck. Thacker fl ed to Missouri where he killed Forrest Reed
Boyd and stole his car along with his credit cards. Thacker drove
to Tennessee where the car ultimately broke down, and he called a
tow truck. Thacker murdered Ray Patterson, the tow truck driver,
after being confronted for using a stolen credit card. Thacker was
apprehended in Tennessee.
He was given a death sentence for killing the tow truck driver in
Tennessee, and a life sentence for killing the Missouri man.
In the fi ling, General Pruitt asked the court to set the date “sixty
days after January 7, 2013.”

Thomasine Harjo, 25, was jailed Dec. 26 after she allegedly drove
drunk through a traffic accident scene - then told officers that she
couldn’t be arrested because she had DUI court the next morning.
According to Oklahoma City police, officers were processing an accident scene where a fatality had occurred when Harjo ignored a police
barricade and drove her vehicle through it anyway.
Investigators say the accident scene had been blocked off with patrol
cars - with lights flashing - and had been corded off with crime scene
tape. Several officers tried to get Harjo to stop prior to entering the accident scene, however she didn’t acknowledge them.
When officers finally did get Harjo to stop, they smelled a strong odor of alcohol when she
opened her door. When Harjo was asked why she did not stop for the barricade, she stated
that she was simply following the car in front of her. No other cars, however, entered the
accident scene.
While officers were placing Harjo into custody, she stated that she couldn’t be arrested
because she had to appear in court the next morning. When an officer asked what the court
appearance was for, Harjo stated that it was for a previous DUI charge.
Harjo was booked into the Oklahoma County Jail and charged with DUI, driving without
a valid driver’s license and obstruction of justice.

A Spencer man was arrested for taking items from
the OKC Bombing Memorial fence and spitting on
a visitor to the memorial, according to police.
A witness told police he spotted Dominique
Polk, 39, taking necklaces and other items from
the fence at the memorial. The fence outside the
memorial on Harvey Street has become a place
where people leave mementos to remember those
lost in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
The witness said after he spotted Polk taking the
items, he attempted to stall Polk until federal
security guards could arrive. That’s when the
man said Polk spit in his face, then walked a short
distance away and unwrapped a cheeseburger,
leaving the wrapper on the bombing grounds.
Federal security guards then called OKC police and Polk was arrested on
suspicion of assault and battery, larceny and littering.

INDECENT EXPOSURE
A 78-year-old Eufaula man was charged Dec. 17 with Pornography- procure, produce, distribute, possess juvenile pornography after officers found nude photos of boys at his home.
Charles Dale Saviers, 78, was arrested Dec. 14 at his home after deputies served him a search warrant when images of naked
young males were found, allegedly taken inside a bedroom at his
residence.
According to the online United Methodist Church’s website,
Saviers’ name and photo is listed under clergy and staff at the
Alderson UMC.
According to the police affidavit, two young boys working for
Saviers discovered the photos. The boys took the photographs
and turned them in to deputies.
While deputies were searching Saviers’ home, Saviers arrived
and was questioned about the photos. He allegedly admitted to burning some other photos,
and said, “...they were horrible pictures. I just don’t keep stuff like that so I burned them.”
When deputies told Saviers they had more photos, Saviers replied, “I thought I had burned
those pictures.”
Saviers was taken to the McIntosh County Jail. He was later released on a $10,000 bond
and ordered to return to court March 30 after pleading not guilty.
