THANK YOU, PATROLMAN JODY THOMPSON
“In April 2015 you (Patrolman Jody
Thompson) responded to a 911 call
of an 8 year old boy who had freed
himself from being held captive,
bound by ropes, and starved by
his parents. You guided those from
other agencies through that evening and the next day. Following the
case, a bond was created between
you and the boy. Upon his release
from the hospital, you and your family opened your home to provide him
a safe environment. Eventually, your
family adopted him and his baby sister, giving them the assurance they
would not have to endure such horrendous acts. You exemplify the kind
of officer your community, city and the State of Oklahoma are blessed to have
serving and protecting them. Your compassion is to be admired. You are most
deserving of the commendation.”
These were the words Stan D. Florence, Director of the Oklahoma Bureau
of Investigation, said to Patrolman Thompson during a presentation June 26
at the Poteau Police Department honoring Patrolman Thompson.
“Jody’s actions as well has his families are second to none! The example
of love and compassion he has shown to this young man and his sister is an
example everyone should follow. It’s men like you that make me proud of our
law enforcement brothers and sisters. You are very deserving of this commendation. I am proud to serve with you!”

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty 5 | AUGUST 2017 LEFLORE COUNTY
“This is the day that the Lord
has made; let us rejoice and be
glad in it.”
Psalm 118:24 (ESV).
When I saw the following post
on a friend’s Facebook page, I
had to share it with my readers:
A famous writer was in his
study and compiled the following list:
1. Last year, my gallbladder
was removed. I was in bed for a
long time.
2. The same year I reached the
age of 60 and had to leave my
favorite job. I spent 30 years with this publishing company.
3. The same year my father died.
4. The same year my son failed his medical exam because he had a car
accident. He was hospitalized with a cast on his leg for several days. The
destruction of the car was a second loss.
His concluding statement: “Alas! It was a bad year!”
When the writer’s wife entered the room, she found her husband looking
dejected and sad. She read what he had written, left the room, and came
back with another piece of paper. The husband read her version of his account of the year’s events:
1. Last year I finally got rid of my gallbladder which had given me many
years of pain.
2. I turned 60 with sound health and retired from my job. Now I can utilize
my time to write with more focus and peace.
3. The same year my father died at the age of 95 without depending on
anyone, without any critical conditions, and met his Creator.
4. The same year, God blessed my son with life. My car was destroyed,
but my son was alive and without permanent disability.
She concluded: This year was an immense blessing.
The moral? It’s not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness
that makes us happy. There is always, always something for which to be
thankful. Our attitude is everything and the one thing we can control.
In a recent “Our Daily Bread” devotional, the author shared the story of
Dr. Virginia Connally.
In 1940, at the age of 27, she braved opposition and criticism to become
the first female physician in Abilene, Texas. A few months before her 100th
birthday in 2012, the Texas Medical Association presented her with its Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor a Texas physician can receive.
Between 1940 and 2012, Dr. Connally embraced a passion for sharing
the gospel message globally. During her many medical mission trips, she
lived a life of service to God and to others — one day at a time.
Her pastor, Phil Christopher, said, “Every day for her is a gift.”
In a letter to her pastor, Dr. Connally wrote, “Every tour, trip, effort, I
wonder if this will be my last and ultimate? Only God knows. And this is
enough.”
What if we quit focusing on yesterday’s disappointments and tomorrow’s
uncertainties and focused on God’s unmatchable gift of today? Wouldn’t
our attitudes change?
When we embrace each day as a gift from God, we can’t help but have
a positive attitude.

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty 7 | AUGUST 2017 LEFLORE COUNTY
An alleged burglar in California whose luck ran out when he got stuck inside a
home’s chimney has been arrested.
Officers from the Ridgecrest Police Department were initially dispatched to a home
after reports of a triggered burglary alarm.
A few minutes later, police got another call — this time from a woman who claimed
that her friend was trapped in a chimney at the same address.
When officers arrived, they discovered Keith Schultz, 28, wedged in the chimney.
They also found signs of forced entry and an open back door, leading them to conclude that Shultz’s accomplices broke into the home with him, and then fled the scene
when they were unable to free him.
Schultz, who was covered in soot in his mug shot, was eventually rescued from the
chimney by firefighters. He was taken to Bakersfield jail and charged with burglary.
Police have arrested two men and seized guns and marijuana after a video emerged
of them appearing in a “mannequin challenge” styled as a shoot-out. The video (which
is very well-done, incidentally) has been shared over 86,000 times is since it was posted to Facebook on November 9, 2016, and quickly become a social-media sensation,
racking up over 173,000 YouTube views.
An official from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office told reporters that after viewing
the video, investigators served a search warrant. They reportedly found two handguns, a shotgun, a rifle, and marijuana that appeared to be packaged for sale at the
residence.
Police have charged Terry Martez Brown, 23, with drug-paraphernalia possession,
loitering, and promoting prison contraband. Kenneth Fennell White, 49, faces charges
of first-degree marijuana possession and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
28-year-old Ricardo Cardona spent 20 minutes bashing down the door of Hudson Meats in south Austin. When he finally got into the place, he grabbed a couple
of packages of sausages from the cooler and took them back outside. The security
camera captured him walking back in and into the 40°F meat cooler for a moment
before heading to the office area, where he found a warm coat to put on and settled in
to sleeping off the alcohol he’d consumed before his arrival at someone’s desk. When
workers arrived the next morning, they called police. Cardona woke up to the police
officers charging him with criminal trespass.
Florida man Derrick Walden was busted after a six-hour standoff with police. Walden
got into a heated argument with a woman, who called police at around 9:15 P.M. after
the fight began to get seriously heated. Walden then barricaded himself and his victim inside the apartment and threatened to shoot police if they tried to enter the building. Negotiators worked for hours, and at around 3 A.M. the next morning Walden
finally let the woman go. He then fell asleep, enabling officers to arrest Walden, and he
was charged with misdemeanor battery, felony battery, domestic violence (strangulation), probation violation, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
When a police officer in Kootenai County, Idaho, conducted a security check of
Stoddard Park, he was surprised to see a Jeep Cherokee sitting parked next to a vehicle belonging to the Street Department of Hayden City. He was also surprised to see a
funnel sticking out of the fuel tank of the Jeep, as well as a siphoning hose in the Street
Department vehicle and a gas can between the two vehicles. Inside the Jeep, a woman was out cold in the front seat with drug paraphernalia sitting on the Jeep’s center
console. When the officer woke the woman up, he realized that she was also sitting
on a small bag of meth. Backup deputies busted Alyssa Wolf, 22, for possession and
drug charges and 25-year-old Scott Miller for siphoning the gas and burglary charges.

CHARGES ON MCALESTER WOMAN
Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter filed
charges July 12 against a McAlester woman
during the National Health Care Fraud Takedown
effort.
The takedown is a nationwide sweep led by
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Medicare Fraud Strike Force in partnership
with other federal, state and local law enforcement entities to crackdown on healthcare fraud
schemes.
Attorney General Hunter said his office is committed to stopping healthcare fraud and prosecuting individuals who intend to harm Oklahomans.
“We will continue our thorough and systematic approach to prosecuting
individuals who commit Medicaid fraud in the state,” Attorney General Hunter said. “Additionally, we will remain committed to working with other law
enforcement agencies and participating in the National Health Care Fraud
Takedown to remain vigilant and to protect vulnerable Oklahomans.”
Lindsay Daniels, of McAlester, is accused of stealing 78 hydrocodone pills
from a resident at Beare Manor Nursing Home in Hartshorne.
Daniels is alleged to have received and signed for the delivery of the medication. After initially denying the allegation, court documents say she later
admitted to an agent that she stole the pills.
Daniels is being charged with larceny of a controlled dangerous substance.

VAUGHT ARRESTED FOR HITTING
CARS, BREAKING INTO VEHICLES
A 35-year-old Canadian woman was arrested
for allegedly hitting some cars and breaking into
a vehicle in a hospital parking lot on June 28.
Lacasey Waynette Vaught had apparently just
left the emergency room prior to attacking the
cars.
According to the police report, a McAlester officer was dispatched to the McAlester Regional
Health Center on Clark Bass Boulevard at approximately 10:30 p.m. to investigate a woman
who had just walked out of the E.R. The caller
said she was strolling through the parking lot and
hitting vehicles.
While the officer was on his way to the scene, he was advised the woman
was now sitting inside a vehicle that probably didn’t belong to her.
The officer arrived at the hospital and quickly located the woman, who was
sitting in the backseat of the black SUV. She was holding a pair of sunglasses
and a nail file in her hand.
The officer told Vaught to exit the vehicle and leave the items inside of the
car.
The owner of the vehicle was contacted and advised of the situation. She
told the officer she didn’t know Vaught, and she wanted to press charges
against the woman for breaking into her vehicle.
The officer placed Vaught under arrest and transported her to the Pittsburg
County Jail.
Vaught is being charged with burglary in the second degree. She was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 28,
2017.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

A: If someone you
care about has asked
for help, he or she has
taken an important first
step. If that person is
resistant to help, see
if you can at least convince him or her to get
an evaluation from a
doctor.
You can always take steps to locate an appropriate physician or health
professional, and leave the information with your friend. You can call health
professionals in advance to see if they are comfortable speaking with their
patients about addiction. If not, ask for a referral to another doctor with more
expertise in the area of addiction. There are 3,500 board-certified physicians
who specialize in addiction in the United States. The American Society of
Addiction Medicine website has a Find a Physician feature on its home page.
The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry also has a Patient Referral
Program.
Emphasize to your friend or loved one that it takes a lot of courage to seek
help for a drug problem because there is a lot of hard work ahead. There is
a great deal of scientific evidence that treatment works, and people recover every day. Like other chronic diseases, addiction can be managed successfully. Treatment enables people to counteract the powerfully disruptive
effects of drugs on the brain and behavior and to regain control of their lives.
Like many diseases, it can take several attempts at treatment to find the right
approach. But assure your friend or loved one that you will be supportive in
his or her courageous effort.

TRIO ARRESTED FOR DRUGS
DURING TRAFFIC STOP
Paden men Tyler Shawn Holdridge, 28, and
Ryan Robinson, 26, and their female friend, Rattan woman Ashley Taylor Bruce, 28, were arrested
for drugs and paraphernalia during a traffic stop on
July 6.
According to the affidavit, a Haskell County deputy stopped the car the trio was riding in at approximately 1:10 a.m. at a gas station in Enterprise for
modified exhaust and multiple items hanging from
the rearview mirror.
The deputy approached the vehicle and made
contact with the driver, identified as Holdridge, and
his passengers Robinson and Bruce (who incorrectly told officers her name was Candice Nicole
during the traffic stop).
While speaking to the group, the deputy noticed
the faint odor of burnt marijuana coming from the
vehicle. He also saw two loaded pistol magazines
in the front seat pouch next to the driver’s leg.
The deputy asked all three occupants to exit the
vehicle. Another officer arrived on scene with his K9
to conduct a “free air sniff” of the vehicle. The dog
alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the car.
Deputies searched the vehicle and found two
pieces of straw with residue, a meth pipe, a clear
plastic bag with residue, a loaded shotgun, and a
semiautomatic pistol.
All three people denied knowing about the drugs
and paraphernalia. Holdridge admitted that the firearms were his.
While a deputy was speaking to Holdridge, he
noticed the man was sweating, his eyes wouldn’t
dilate, and he appeared to be under the influence
of methamphetamine.
Officers also found a pair of brass knuckles on
Bruce’s person.
Bruce is being charged with falsely personate another to create liability, possession of controlled dangerous substance, unlawful possession of
drug paraphernalia and carrying weapons. Her bond was set at $10,000,
and she is scheduled to appear in court on July 18, 2017.
Robinson is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Holdridge is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous
substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, transporting loaded firearm
in motor vehicle, improper muffler and obstructing driver’s view. His bond
was set at $5,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on July 25, 2017.
