Today we entered the 18th day of the Ghislaine Maxwell trial, and the jurors appeared not to be scrambling to conclude a verdict before the New Year.
The jury in this trial has been deliberating for about 37 hours, and after Tuesday’s deliberations, they told Judge Alison Nathan that they felt that they were in a good place. (CNN)
As Wednesday’s proceedings began, the jury asked for the testimony of accuser Carolyn’s former boyfriend, Shawn. The former boyfriend was Maxwell’s former assistant at Epstein’s New York office in the late 1990s. The jury also requested testimony from defense witness Dr. Elizabeth Loftus. This was the first time the jury requested transcripts from a defense witness. (CNN)
As the day continued, the jurors requested the testimony of Larry Visoski. He was Epstein’s former pilot and testified that in the mid to late 1990s, Epstein brought one of his accusers, “Jane,” to the cockpit to meet him. (CNN)
As Wednesday’s proceedings concluded, Judge Nathan told attorneys and the jury that the 12-member panel would work through each day; even if this means through the holiday weekend, until they have reached a verdict.
Judge Nathan concludes that pushing the jury to work through the holiday weekend will help avoid a mistrial because of the risk of the pandemic and Omicron variant.
Maxwell pled not guilty to six federal counts of sex trafficking a minor, enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, transporting a minor with the intent to engage in criminal activity, and three related counts of conspiracy.
At the end of today’s proceedings, the jury came to a verdict. Maxwell is convicted on five out of the six federal counts. The count that was found not guilty was the charge related to enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts.
Today marks a colossal victory for the victims of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The women who were adolescents when these crimes were committed used their voices to speak out against these high-profile people.
