DUI BURGLARY - 2ND DEGREE
Investigators with the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office
arrested Stacey Durrett, 53, of Yukon on Tuesday, June
20th after he attempted to set fire to a Calumet residence,
attempting to kill its occupants.
Sheriff’s deputies initially responded to the scene in the
early morning hours of June 20, 2017 in response to a
domestic disturbance. Upon their arrival, deputies observed a mobile home on fire, and spoke with the owner
of the residence, identified as Durrett’s cousin. They also
determined from witnesses that Durrett had tried to kill his
cousin, and his cousin’s son in the house fire.
Investigators began the investigation by collecting evidence at the scene, and gathering information in an attempt to determine Durrett’s location. While at the scene, a tip came in that Stacey Durrett was spotted
at a local hotel in Yukon. Canadian County Sheriff’s deputies along with several
Yukon police officers, and an Oklahoma State Trooper secured the hotel Durrett
was believed to be staying at.
When investigators arrived to the motel, they entered Durrett’s room and found
rose petals on the floor, leading to the bathtub, where they found Durrett. He was
immediately taken into custody.
“Durret told my investigators he had hired an escort to come to his room, and
wanted to spice up the atmosphere a little. He wasn’t even phased by the fact
he had tried to kill his relatives in a house fire just a few hours earlier,” said Chris
West, Canadian County Sheriff.
Investigators learned Durrett attempted to lock the victims inside the residence
by tying an extension cord to their door handle, preventing them from opening
the door. The victim told Stacey “You are going kill my kid too.” The victim told investigators Durrett said he would let his kid out, but he was going to kill the dad.
As soon as Durrett let the door open, the victim and his son were able to exit the
residence; just a split second before a propane tank blew up, igniting the home.
Durrett fled the scene while the victims watched all of their possessions burn
in the fire. Sheriff’s Investigators along with the Oklahoma Fire Marshal’s Office
examined the scene for evidence of arson, and located some petroleum products in the soil under the propane tanks of the residence. The Oklahoma Fire
Marshal also checked to make sure there were no other causes to the fire before
concluding it was arson.
After Investigators learned Durrett had been spotted at a hotel in Yukon, deputies were dispatched in that direction, and then secured the hotel with the assistance of Yukon PD, and an OHP Trooper. Deputies learned Stacey was in room
227 and with the help of management entered the room and arrested Durrett.
Once Durrett was transported to Canadian County Jail, investigators interviewed him regarding the arson. Durrett admitted he was at the location, and tied
an extension cord to the door handle.
“I am thankful no one was killed in this arson. With law enforcement working
together, we were able to quickly track down our “Bad guy” and take him into
custody,” said West.
Durrett was booked into the Canadian County jail on two counts of Attempted
Murder, and one count of Arson in The First Degree. His bond was set at one
hundred fifteen thousand dollars and remains in jail.

A Missouri man was taken into custody June
23 after he allegedly assaulted a woman and
threatened to kill her ex-husband.
Calvin Menefield was charged June 27 with
possession of a firearm after former felony conviction, assault and battery w/deadly weapon,
domestic assault and battery by strangulation,
and domestic abuse in the presence of minors,
in Beckham County District Court.
According to online information, the Beckham County Sheriff's Office received a report on
June 23 that a man had just assaulted a woman
and was on his way to Shamrock, Tx., to kill her ex-husband. Officers
with the sheriff’s department, along with Sayre Police, OHP, Elk City
Police, Erick Police, and the Department of Wildlife began searching
immediately for the suspect, identified as Menefield.
A short time later, Menefield’s vehicle was found abandoned near
I-40 Exit 11 on old Route 66 Highway. Officers searched the area, and
also the Eastbound Information Center after someone reported seeing
a man there with a gun.
Menefield was then seen at the Love’s Travel Plaza in Erick and was
taken into custody. His bond was set at $100,000.
Sheriff Derek Manning said he appreciated the strong support and
response from area agencies and the public. "This was a perfect example of agencies working together and the public assisting with good
information and tips. We'd especially like to thank Erick PD for their
officer's quick response once the suspect's location was determined.
Because of all those involved, no one else was hurt, and a potentially
dangerous situation was resolved," Manning said.
Menefield’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 15 at 9
am.

10. Do they take more of the drug to get the wanted effect?
11. Have they developed withdrawal symptoms, which can be relieved by
taking more of the drug? (Some withdrawal symptoms can be obvious, but
others can be more subtle—like irritability or nervousness.)
If the answer to some or all of these questions is yes, your friend or loved
one might have a substance abuse problem. In the most severe cases, it is
called an addiction. It can happen to people from all backgrounds, rich or
poor, and it can happen at any age.
Through scientific research, we now know more than ever about how drugs
work in the brain, and we also know that drug addiction can be successfully
treated to help people stop abusing drugs and lead productive lives.
If you think your adult friend or loved might be addicted, you cannot fix the
problem by yourself, but there are some steps you can take. If the person is
willing to explore the issue, refer him or her to this webpage: What to Do If

the information and to help access the resources.

In an effort to better serve
the community, the Custer
County Sheriff's Office will
be initiating a local Special
Needs Registry modeled after similar program released
by the Grady County Sheriff's Office.
In the unfortunate event
that an individual with special
needs goes missing, having
this information already available in a local database will
greatly improve the Sheriff's
Office response and approach in attempting to return them safely.
Registration forms will available at the Sheriff's Office located at 300 N.
7th Street in Arapaho. Parents, guardians, caregivers, etc. may pick up
the registration forms and either turn them back in to the Sheriff's Office
or email them. We recommend that that parents also keep a copy of the
registration with them for use if the individual goes missing in a different
county or jurisdiction. The Sheriff's Office will also forward copies of registrations of those people who reside within the jurisdictions of the City
of Clinton and the City of Weatherford to those respective police departments, so they may have the information available as well.
Autism Safety Oklahoma is working to build a national database, because at this time, there is not one available.
If you have a family member with special needs , such as Autism, even
in very mild form, we urge you to get a registration form from the Custer
County Sheriff's Office.

topping 90 degrees
in Fort Worth, Texas,
residents without air
conditioning certainly
had a lot to complain
about, especially
95-year-old Julius
Hatley.
But Hatley made
the best of his situation, sitting on his
porch in the shade to
keep cool. He even continued his yard work, despite the unbearable heat.
But the 95-year-old's luck took a turn. Drenched in sweat, the man called
the Fort Worth Police Department to report his broken air conditioner.
"This wasn't a regular 911 call," Fort Worth Officer William Margolis told
CBS News. "It was what you'd label 'low priority' because we're not AC
techs."
After responding to a few other calls first, Margolis and his partner, Christopher Weir, made their way to Hatley's home, where they discovered both
his central A/C and window unit were broken.
"When we got there around 8:30 a.m. his house was 85 to 90 degrees
already," Margolis said.
After talking over the situation with his partner, Margolis promised the
man he'd find a solution.
Margolis couldn't shake the image of the elderly man sitting in his home
in the sweltering heat, so he decided to make a pit stop at Home Depot
and Weir agreed.
The officers asked employees for help finding a good A/C unit, explaining Hatley's situation in the process. The Home Depot workers were so
touched by the officers' kind gesture, they offered to pitch in their own
money, too.
"While there, Home Depot managers and employees decided to contribute $150 of their own money to help with the cause," Weir's wife, Jennifer, wrote on Facebook. "This is what being an officer is about.”
Weir, along with another co-worker, Officer Steven Rebrovich, helped
Margolis install the A/C unit inside Hatley's home later that day. And Hatley
couldn't have been happier -- he even posed for a few pictures with the
officers afterward.
"He was actually really excited," Margolis recalled. "He said he knew if he
needed help to call 911 and we actually were able to help him, so he was
really excited about it."
"I appreciate that," Hatley told the officers as they finished installing the
unit.
The goodwill doesn't stop there.
"Since the story was [first shared], we have all worked on getting his
central air replaced and a company came forward to do so, completely for
free." Jennifer Weir told CBS News. "We are also currently working on getting his windows replaced, his house repainted and groceries every week."
Margolis said he plans to make a point of checking in on Hatley from time
to time.
"He's 95 years old and he's a World War II veteran," Margolis said. "He's
a hero. In our eyes he's our hero."

Rule, Texas, woman Leigha McKay Dallas,
29, drank a little too much whiskey and hit a
woman who lived in her brother’s apartment
building on June 26.
According to the police report, a Cordell
officer was dispatched to the building in the
100 block of S. College Street at approximately 10 p.m. due to a woman in the lobby who was causing a disturbance. One of
the apartment residents told the officer she
walked through the front door and saw Dallas standing in the doorway of an apartment.
When the residence walked by Dallas, the
woman reached out and hit her face for no
apparent reason. The victim said she pushed
Dallas away and kept on walking.
Dallas then returned to her brother’s apartment where she and her husband were staying. Not that he wanted them there -- he advised the officer
that the couple had overstayed their welcome.
The officer went to the apartment and knocked on the door. Dallas’s husband opened it and advised the officer they had been drinking. The man
said his wife had “only” had half a pint of whiskey.
The officer found Dallas passed out on the floor.
The officer left the apartment to make a quick phone call, to make sure he
could remove the couple from the building.
When he returned, Dallas answered the door. He placed her under arrest
and advised the couple they needed to vacate the apartment immediately.
Dallas pled guilty to the charge of with assault and battery. Her sentencing
was deferred to June 28, 2018.
